NBC Sports: Everton & Palace Draw 1-1 At Goodison Park
- Quote:
-
Everton and Crystal Palace traded haymakers for 90 straight minutes at Goodison Park on Monday, with the two sides ultimately splitting the points after a 1-1 draw. Roberto Martinez’s Toffees will feel hard done by, though, having hit the frame of the goal not one, not twice, but three times on the night.
In a bit of perfect symmetry, Romelu Lukaku marked his 100th appearance for Everton by scoring his 50th goal for the club (above video), rescuing a point for the home side after Palace so nearly completed another classic smash-and-grab away from home.
Palace’s best chance of the first half came and went in the 16th minute, when U.S. national team goalkeeper Tim Howard made a reaction save of Connor Wickham‘s header at point-blank range. Yannick Bolasie whipped the cross in from the left wing, and Wickham flicked the ball on, but Howard was positioned perfectly at the near post and made the save with his chest.
Lukaku went so close to putting Everton into the lead in the 21st minute, but the big Belgian striker’s shot found only the front side of the far post. After a quick one-two with Ross Barkley put him into space, Lukaku made a quick turn and cut inside to put the ball on his favored left foot. His shot from the top of the 18-yard box had beaten Wayne Hennessey but found only the woodwork.
It was Wickham who nearly gave the Toffees the game’s first goal when his wayward headed clearance went horribly wrong and nearly found the back of his own net. Barkley whipped in a low, flat free kick from the left wing and Wickham rose as the first defender in the penalty area for Palace, the ball skipping off the top of his head and making its way to the far post where it hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced downward, missing the goal line by mere inches.
Lukaku combined with Tom Cleverley to create another very-nearly chance in the 66th minute. Barkley played the ball to Lukaku at the top of the Palace box, where he backheeled the ball to Cleverley in a bit of space. Cleverley hit a first-time volley with his right foot that was always dipping away from Hennessey, but the Welsh ‘keeper did well to spring across the face of goal and get fingertips to the ball to tip it over the bar.
Palace found themselves on the back foot for much of the second half, but eventually broke through against the run of play in the 76th minute, when Scott Dann rose above the crowd to head in Jason Puncheon‘s corner kick.
Lukaku unleashed a brilliant strike only to hit the crossbar two minutes later. The 22-year-old fired a dipping, swerving volley, which had Hennessey beaten all the way, from just outside the penalty area with that same left foot. Alas, it was the Toffees’ third time clanging the ball off the frame of the goal.
On 80 minutes, Everton — and Lukaku — got their very deserved goal to equalize. Gerard Deulofeu broke down the left wing and hit a low, stinging cross to the far post, where Lukaku was waiting, shielding the nearest defenders with the full frame of his body, making the finish a simple tap-in from three yards out.
Left back Leighton Baines made his return to first-team action as a 62nd-minute substitute after more than 10 months out injured (last appearance for Everton was Jan. 13, 2015).
With the draw on Monday, the Toffees climb two spots, up ninth in the Premier League table, a point behind Palace, West Ham and Liverpool who are all level on 23 points at sixth, seventh and eighth in the league respectively.

NBC Sports: Injury Woes Continue For West Ham

- Quote:
-
The treatment room is busy at West Ham, as Manuel Lanzini and Victor Moses have both been ruled out for the near future.
Both players could miss up to six weeks of action with muscle injuries. Lanzini suffered a quad injury in training midweek, while Moses was forced off in the first half of West Ham’s draw against Manchester United with a hamstring problem.
They join a list of injured attackers at Upton Park, including Dimitri Payet, Enner Valencia, and Diafra Sakho. Essentially, West Ham’s top five attacking options are all out.
The Hammers currently sit seventh on the Premier League table and have scored an impressive 25 goals through 15 matches. However, just four points separate the club from 13th place West Brom.
Slaven Bilic had a dream start to his career at West Ham, but now comes his biggest challenge. Bilic must find a way to grind out results in the busiest part of the season, doing so without most of his top players.
Last season, Sam Allardyce had the Hammers sitting fourth on the table at Christmas, only to stumble down the stretch and finish 12th in May. With the growing injury list, Bilic will try to avoid a similar result.

BBC Sport: Schweinsteiger Handed 3-Game Ban

- Quote:
-
Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will be banned for three matches after accepting a Football Association charge for violent conduct.
He was charged after catching West Ham's Winston Reid with his left arm as they waited for a free-kick in Saturday's 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. The incident was not seen by the match officials but was caught on video.
Schweinsteiger, 31, will miss games against Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke, and return in time to play Chelsea.
More to follow.

BBC Sport: Mahrez - Leicester Cannot Win Premier League Title

- Quote:
-
Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez has dismissed his team's chances of winning the Premier League, despite being top.
The Foxes narrowly avoided relegation last season but are two points clear at the summit after 15 games. But Mahrez, who took his goal tally to 11 with Saturday's treble at Swansea, is more concerned at getting the eight more points needed to reach 40, a total usually enough for survival.
"I don't think we can win the league," he told BBC World Football. "We just need to get the 40 points and then after that we will see."
The Algeria international's form, along with that of 14-goal team-mate Jamie Vardy, has been instrumental in Leicester's rise.
"I'm not surprised because I knew I could do the things that I have done," Mahrez, 24, added. "Football is just confidence. When you start scoring and you carry on it gives you more confidence so maybe that has helped me."

NBC Sports: Remi Garde - Aston Villa Has Interest In Ashley Cole

- Quote:
-
Ashley Cole hasn’t played a match since July, but he is still attracting interest at 34-years-old.
Cole left Chelsea for Roma in 2014, but had his contract terminated with the club this summer after just one season in Italy.
After reports came out that the left-back could return to the Premier League in the January transfer window, Aston Villa boss Remi Garde confirmed it is something he is looking into.
Every good player is interesting for me and Ashley is a good player. He is someone who has experience but he didn’t play for a while now. Experience is also something we need. I will speak soon with the club and I’m already working on the January window. We know what we want to do.
Villa is in need of some defensive help, as they have conceded 28 goals through 15 matches and lost left-back Jordan Amavi to a season-ending knee injury.
However, with just one win on the season and glued to the bottom of the table, would Cole want to return to the Premier League for a relegation battle?
Cole is widely considered one of the best defenders of his generation. Throughout his years at Arsenal and Chelsea, he won three Premier League titles, seven FA Cup titles, and one Champions League trophy. He was twice named to the UEFA Team of the Year, and won England Player of the Year in 2010.
Previously linked with a possible big-money move to Major League Soccer, one would assume Cole would only return to the Premier League for a chance to win another trophy, something Aston Villa has no chance of achieving.

NBC Sports: Wenger - Olivier Giroud "Among The Best Strikers In Europe"

- Quote:
-
Since joining Arsenal in 2012, Olivier Giroud has often been criticized for his play, as many believed he was not an elite striker able to lead the Gunners to glory.
Despite all the doubt, Giroud has continued to score goals, most recently a massive hat-trick against Olympiakos that led Arsenal into the last 16 of the Champions League.
The 29-year-old Frenchman is currently fifth in the Premier League with eight goals, and averaged a goal per game in the Champions League group stage.
His form this season has earned the striker high praise from his manager, as Arsene Wenger said you must give Giroud credit as one of the best in Europe.
If you look at the number of goals he has scored you have to give him credit. And he is not only a goalscorer – he works a lot for the team. He is among the best strikers in Europe.
I believe because he is not the electric type of player and he makes less spectacular actions, he gets less credit. The kind of header he scored for the first goal [against Olympiakos], you do not get much credit for that – but he was there, he headed the ball and it’s an important goal.
You can never give up the style of player he is. If you go on the counterattack, of course, he isn’t the kind of player you want. That’s why when we played against Bayern [in October] I chose Walcott because you know you will be more in your half and have to go out quickly. When you dominate games and need a presence in the box, there is no better player than Olivier.
Wenger is right in his assessment that Giroud is not going to wow the crowd with brilliant individual skills such as the likes of a Neymar or Luis Suarez, but his hat-trick against Olympiakos highlighted the type of striker Giroud is. Scoring from a header, a quick shot from ten-yards out, and a penalty kick, Giroud is a poacher who makes the most of his chances.
Arsenal supporters will be hoping Giroud can continue to produce, as the Gunners are chasing their first Premier League title since 2004. He’ll also be eager to keep his form up as he prepares for EURO 2016 in his home country of France this summer, as Giroud is battling for the starting spot now that Karim Benzema has been suspended from the team indefinitely.

NBC Sports: Leicester City Defeat Chelsea 2-1, Go Top Of The League
- Quote:
-
Let’s just say it: Leicester might just be for real, and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is in real, real trouble.
The schedule has been kind to the Foxes, sure, but Leicester keeps winning and is back atop the Premier League after an 2-1 win over Chelsea at King Power Stadium on Monday.
Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez linked up again to take the Foxes to a 1-0 first half lead, and the Algerian picked up one of his own soon after halftime.
Loic Remy scored for the Blues. And we have to ask: Could this be it for Mourinho at Stamford Bridge? Leicester City is two points ahead of Arsenal and a remarkable 18 points above No. 16 Chelsea.
Both teams traded possessions with precious bits of play inside the 18s, and Chelsea had to contend with an injury to Eden Hazard. Mourinho tabbed Pedro to replace him. That’s when Vardy’s well-timed run between John Terry and Kurt Zouma was met by another gorgeous cross off the foot of Mahrez. As easy as you like, the Foxes led 1-0.
Then Mahrez worked Cesar Azpilicueta right, then left, then right and left again before belting a shot past Thibaut Courtois. Where was the help?!?
Chelsea pulled within a goal when Pedro sent in a beautiful cross for Remy to head past Kaspar Schmeichel. But the Foxes held their nerves for the final minutes.

NBC Sports: Defiant Mouirnho Wants Backing Of Chelsea Boss, Says "We Are Not In Relegation Battle"
- Quote:
-
Jose Mourinho and Chelsea’s nightmare season hit a new low on Monday as the Blues lost for the ninth time in 16 Premier League outings this campaign to leave them one point above the relegation zone.
After calling Leicester City’s ball boys a “disgrace” in the 2-1 defeat at the King Power Stadium to league-leaders Leicester City, plus claiming he felt “betrayed” by his own players and then throwing Eden Hazard under the bus, Mourinho has come out all guns blazing following the latest defeat in a shambolic title defense from the West London outfit.
Mourinho, 52, still doesn’t think his team are in a relegation battle despite the gap between themselves and the top four now increasing to 14 points, with many Blues fans looking over their shoulders nervously at the likes of Swansea City, Norwich City and Sunderland. Yep, it has got that bad.
Expect, Mourinho doesn’t want to believe his team is in a battle against the drop despite breezing into the UEFA Champions League last 16 last week.
“I accept we are in the relegation zone but I don’t accept we are in a relegation battle,” said Mourinho. “You look at the table and we are there but you think you are in a relegation battle if you think you are there for three or four months. I don’t think that.”
Speaking about his own future, Mourinho wants to remain at Chelsea and turn things around but also wants the backing of his boss, Chelsea’s Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.
“The last question is always the same. The only thing I can say is that I want to be the manager,” Mourinho added. “I have no doubts and I think you know me well enough to know that I am not afraid of a big challenge and in this moment it is a really big challenge. I want to stay and I hope Mr Roman Abramovich and the board want me to stay because I want to stay.”
Mourinho was given the vote of confidence by Chelsea following their defeat at home to Southampton in October but since then blow after damaging blow has arrived with back-to-back defeats to Bournemouth and Leicester ending their faint hopes of staging a miraculous comeback to finish in the top four.
“The top four is gone – clearly,” Mourinho said when asked after the game on Monday. Does that mean he will be gone sooner rather than later too?

NBC Sports: Aston Villa Manager Call Out High-Profile Villans

- Quote:
-
Remi Garde is winless since taking over at Aston Villa in November, earning just two points out of a possible 15. The club still sits glued to the bottom of the table, six points adrift and looking destined for relegation.
Garde has been thrown into the gauntlet in his first experience as a Premier League manager, and he’s handled it in an interesting way.
First, Garde demoted Villa’s young starlet Jack Grealish for his off-the-pitch behavior, saying the 20-year-old needed to mature. Now, the French boss is calling out some of the club’s high-priced players.
Garde questioned the trust between himself and club captain Gabby Agbonlahor, who has seen his playing time disappear under the new manager. He then called out Adama Traore, who signed for Villa from Barcelona this summer, saying the young winger is inconsistent and struggles to play without the ball.
His most blunt remarks were about summer signing Charles N'Zogbia, who Garde said isn’t putting in enough effort, as it looks likely he could be sold in January.
Charles could have given more to the team in the first two or three weeks after I came.
Charles is not the worst person I have ever met. I am just here to try to pick up the players I feel are the most committed for this very difficult task we have.
I am not saying Charles is a bad person. Sometimes it doesn’t work between players and clubs, players and managers.
The board has told Garde he has their support to spend during the January transfer window, and by his recent comments, it seems as if the manager would like to bring in an entirely new squad.
Villa have gone 15 league games without a win, and Garde could start to cause even more problems if he keeps publicly criticizing players like he has been. The team has enough issues on the pitch, the last thing they need are issues off of it.

BBC Sport: Van Gaal Worried About Future At Old Trafford

- Quote:
-
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said he is "worried" about his job after a shock 2-1 loss to Norwich. The result handed United a third defeat in a row in all competitions and are now winless in six games. Cameron Jerome and Alex Tettey netted for the visitors, while Anthony Martial replied for the hosts.
Asked if he feared for his position, van Gaal said: "Yes of course I am worried about that because I know that belief in a manager is very important." The Dutchman, 64, could not give a definite answer when asked if he will be given time to turn the situation around at Old Trafford.
"Yes I think so but I never know, in this world, you never know. It is not up to me, but we shall see," he added.
'I am - or shall I say was - a successful manager' Van Gaal is out of contract at the end of the 2016-17 season and there has been speculation that Jose Mourinho will become the next United manager after being sacked by Chelsea on Thursday.
The Portuguese says he wants an immediate return to management and has been linked with the Old Trafford job, as has Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola who is to clarify his own future on Sunday.
"That's the football world. I know that, my board knows that, my players know that," van Gaal said when asked if the pressure was building on him. "I don't think a change of management shall bring direct success - but that is what I believe. Maybe that is not so interesting.
"I am always evaluating myself because I think that is an aspect of the philosophy I have. But the philosophy is also making an evolution - I am not the same coach I was 25 years ago.
"So, you are always evaluating and of course that philosophy is very important for me. Because of that I am - or maybe I have to say now, was - a very successful manager."
'It was not good enough' Defeat meant Manchester United have now gone six games in all competitions without victory for the first time since 1998.
United had 70% possession against Norwich, but could only muster two shots on target as they were booed off by their own supporters.
The Red Devils face a testing festive period, starting on Boxing Day against Stoke at the Britannia Stadium, before they host Chelsea at Old Trafford two days later. They then face managerless Swansea on 2 January.
Van Gaal added: "The main thing is that you have to be professional and do the things that you have to do and work very hard to come out of this bad period.
"It was not good enough. You have to win against Norwich. We know that. Now we prepare for the Stoke game with professionalism and spirit, that is the only message I can give [to you]."
