'Even MUTV are criticising van Gaal' - MOTD2 Extra
--Shaun Custis points out that while it's not open mutiny at Old Trafford yet, a change in style of Manchester United TV is a sign of the growing pressure on Louis van Gaal. "MUTV can be like the North Korean state broadcasting system at times," he said.

"But even they are criticising their team under Louis van Gaal. "Once you've got your own TV station having a go at you, you've really got problems."

'Maybe managers should sign three-month deals'
MOTD2 Extra

--Chris Sutton
Former Chelsea & Norwich striker on MOTD2 Extra
Quote:

So with Jose Mourinho also now available, do Man Utd strike early and sign up the (former?) Special One?"I don't think Mourinho will come in soon, maybe at the end of the season," said Sutton. "But van Gaal should be given time beacause of his record but he needs to change things.

"Perhaps managers should just sign three-month contracts because if you lose enough games over that time, you're out of the door anyway."

'Chelsea's players should hang their heads'
MOTD2 Extra

Chris Sutton - Former Chelsea & Norwich striker on MOTD2 Extra
Posted at 12:56
--After Chelsea 'toasted' the sacking of Jose Mourinho with a 3-1 win over Sunderland, Chris Sutton called the players 'a disgrace' and the former Blue is sticking to his view.

"They should hang their heads in shame," he says. "The least the fans expect is players to play for the jersey, to run around, chase back and put in the effort and they weren't.

"But there was only one way after Mourinho's comments about betrayal - he knew what he was saying and he had to go."

NBC Sports: Arsenal Makes Statement For Title Push
Quote:

The 2015-16 Premier League title race will likely not be decided until late May. With Leicester City currently leading the way, and perennial top-four finishers Arsenal and Manchester City not far behind, Monday’s showdown, between the latter two, at the Emirates Stadium was chock full of title implications.

It was Arsenal who came out on top, 2-1 at the final whistle, thanks to goals scored by Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud, and an extremely disciplined defensive effort that frustrated Man City’s prolific attacking unit for much of the game.

The game’s first real chance came and went in the 31st minute, when City unlocked the Gunners’ deep-lying midfield and defense with a quick move down the right flank. Kevin De Bruyne ended up in acres of space and racing in on goal, but the Belgian playmaker fired his bouncing effort inches wide of the far post.

Theo Walcott opened the scoring for Arsenal barely a minute later. He received the ball from Mesut Ozil on the left edge of the City penalty area, cut inside past Bacary Sagna and rifled a low, right-footed drive through a sea of defenders and around Joe Hart, nestling itself inside the far post. It was Arsenal’s first shot of the game.

The Gunners doubled their lead during first-half stoppage time, when Olivier Giroud slotted a low screamer between the legs of Hart. The entire thing began with a wayward pass from Eliaquim Mangala into no-man’s-land midfield. The ball was quickly circulated to Ozil 25 yards from goal, where he played Giroud onto his favored left foot and the Frenchman made no mistake with his finish. With two assists in the first half, Ozil’s tally for the season rose to 15 in league play (tops in all major European leagues).

With 53 minutes on the clock, Joel Campbell nearly gave Arsenal a 3-0 lead, but the Costa Rican blazed his shot well over the crossbar after getting on the end of Nacho Monreal‘s cut-back cross toward the penalty spot. Campbell had another chance two minutes later, when he raced in one-on-one against Hart, but the England no. 1 made a clever quick save to keep the deficit at 2-0.

The one-way traffic continued as yet another chance for 3-0 came and went in the 60th minute. Ozil played the ball to Campbell at the top of the penalty area, and Campbell slipped Aaron Ramsey into the penalty area with a one-touch ball but again it was Hart rushing out quickly and making the one-on-one save.

Yaya Toure gave the visitors a lifeline in the 82nd minute (above video). The Ivorian midfielder lofted a perfectly weighted, left-footed shot into the upper-90 from the top of the 18-yard box. Sagna cut the ball back to Toure, whose first-time strike left Petr Cech with no chance of intervening.

For the next 10-plus minutes, City threw numbers forward, pressed much higher up the field and chased an equalizer with everything they had. In the end, Arsenal held firm and escaped with a much-deserved victory.

With the victory, Arsenal move to within two points of Leicester at the top of the table, while City remain in third, six points back of the Foxes. Up next for Arsenal is a Boxing Day trip to Southampton. Meanwhile, City will host Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium.

NBC Sports: Leicester Draw Level With Arsenal On Points, End 2015 With 0-0 Draw Against Manchester City

Posted Image
Quote:

Manchester City’s struggles away from home continue, as the Citizens were held scoreless at the King Power Stadium in a 0-0 draw with Leicester City.

It was a deserved draw for both sides, as neither team looked overly dangerous moving forward. Leicester City is now tied with Arsenal on points at the top of the table, although the Foxes sit second on goal differential. Manchester City will enter 2016 in third place.

Manchester City had the better of possession in the first half, with Raheem Sterling looking the most dangerous man on the attack. Despite the lopsided possession numbers, City did not create many dangerous goalscoring chances.

City’s best chance of the half came from Sterling, who controlled with his chest and fired a shot on goal, forcing Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to get down and make a strong save.

After a relatively slow opening to the match, Leicester suddenly found life and nearly took the lead in the final ten minutes of the half. Christian Fuchs whipped in a cross the slid right through the box, fizzing past Jamie Vardy and an outstretched Marc Albrighton. Seconds later, Vardy pick-pocketed Fernandinho on the top of the box, but fired his shot high over the net.

Manchester City should have went ahead just a minute into the first half, as Kevin De Bruyne hit a low cross into Sergio Aguero at the near post. From just yards out, Aguero somehow saw his flick go over the bar, as the striker is clearly still trying to find his form after coming back from injury.

Aguero had a penalty shout just after the hour mark, as the striker looked to have been taken down by Gokhan Inler in the box. However, referee Craig Pawson made no call and the play was Aguero’s last action, as he was taken off and replaced by Wilfried Bony.

Leicester nearly broke the deadlock in the 77th minute, with Riyad Mahrez and Christian Fuchs standing over a free kick. Mahrez touched the ball to Fuchs, whose shot was headed towards the top corner only to be parried wide by a diving Joe Hart.

The Foxes looked more likely to find a game-winner late in the match, although the 90 minutes ended scoreless in a result both sides will take.

BBC Sport: Benteke Goal Lifts Liverpool To 1-0 Victory Over Sunderland

Posted Image
Quote:

Christian Benteke scored the only goal as Liverpool ended 2015 with a victory, leaving Sunderland in deep trouble. Benteke netted early in the second half, running on to Adam Lallana's pass to neatly net from inside the area.

Vito Mannone made a stunning save to tip Liverpool midfielder Roberto Firmino's shot on to a post before pushing away the Brazilian's header.

Jermain Defoe forced Simon Mignolet into an excellent save, but Sunderland have now lost their past five games. Fabio Borini also went close against his former side, shooting straight at Mignolet and striking an effort narrowly wide.

Back-to-back Benteke winners lift Liverpool
After the initial scramble, it was all too easy for Liverpool when the ball broke free. Nathaniel Clyne's pass was touched on by Adam Lallana (20) for Christian Benteke (9) to finish

This was the Reds' second successive 1-0 win, having beaten Leicester by the same scoreline on Boxing Day, with Belgium striker Benteke the match-winner both times. Since signing for £32m in the summer, the former Aston Villa man has not been a regular starter, but has now scored six times in seven games against Sunderland, more than against any other side.

But, having missed from close range against Leicester, he once again spurned a straightforward chance, running through on goal before striking at Mannone.

Liverpool were not at their best, but their control and another clean sheet will please boss Jurgen Klopp. His side moved up to seventh - level on points with Manchester United.

NBC Sports: Back From Injury A Month Early, Payet Ready To Return To Hammers' Lineup

Posted Image
Quote:

West Ham United have won just once in their last nine Premier League games (six draws), and seen the Hammers name tumble out of the top four of the league table, out of the top-six and all the way down to eighth.

Coincidentally — or, perhaps not so — Slaven Bilic‘s side has been without ace midfielder Dimitri Payet (ankle) for the last seven games (one win, five draws). Payet’s arrival in the PL earlier in the fall saw the 28-year-old Frenchman become on of the signings of the early season, when he racked up five goals and three assists in his first nine league games.

In seven games without Payet, West Ham have scored just five goals (three 0-0 draws). In the 12 games prior, which included victories over Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, they scored 23. It’s pretty clear why West Ham were so devastated on Nov. 9, when they learned the could be without Payet for up to three months, which means they must be overjoyed that he’s already back in training and in contention to start at home against Liverpool on Saturday, according to his manager.

Bilic, on Payet’s rapid recovery and his availability for Saturday — quotes from the Guardian:

“Is he in contention to start? Yes. He is back, he’s been training with us for a couple of days and depending on how he does today I’m expecting him to be in the squad and available for the game. We will see how much he is going to participate in the game, but he is back and it’s a great boost for us.”

Midfielder Victor Moses and defender Winston Reid (hamstring injuries) are both also back in full training, according to Bilic. With defender Aaron Cresswell (groin) and forward Diafra Sakho (thigh) the only other injury list inclusions, the Hammers are nearly back to being the full-strength side they were when they won six of their first 10 league games (two draws) this season.

.....given how good Leicester City has been this season, this ain't good news...

(BBC Sport) Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy is set to be out for one to two weeks in order to have minor groin surgery, BBC Radio Leicester reports.

The England forward has been in superb form this season and his 15 Premier League goals have helped the Foxes to second in the table. The 28-year-old has made 24 appearances for the club this campaign.

Vardy was also a member of coach Roy Hodgson's England squad that qualified for Euro 2016.

The former Fleetwood Town striker played the entire 95 minutes of Leicester's 0-0 draw against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Football League World: Crystal Palace Set To Bid On QPR Striker

Posted Image
Quote:

Crystal Palace are set to launch a £7.5m bid for Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin, subsequently dashing Newcastle’s hopes of signing him, according to the Express.

Austin, who is out of contract in the summer, has made voices about leaving, and many Rangers fans seemingly believe his intentions are to leave Loftus Road at the end of his contract.

Alan Pardew will hope to bolster his attacking ranks in January, and after the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, it is quite clear that a prolific striker is the missing piece of the jigsaw.

Whilst Connor Wickham and Dwight Gayle had undoubted quality, they are far too inconsistent to lead the line on a regular basis, and after Patrick Bamford ended his loan spell early, they are short on attacking quality.

Austin seems the perfect fit, and with his contract running out, he could easily be poached for a cut price figure, especially with fears over him departing on a free.

QPR currently sit in 16th place in the second tier, and losing Austin would be a monumental blow to Hasselbaink’s aspirations of reaching the top six of the Championship.
