BBC Sport: Koeman Warns Southampton Players To Behave

Posted Image
Quote:

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has warned his players they will be dropped if they try to force a transfer.

Forward Sadio Mane, 23, and midfielder Victor Wanyama, 24, have been linked with moves to other clubs. Mane was dropped to the substitutes' bench for the defeat at Norwich after he was late for a pre-match meeting.

Koeman said if players thought misbehaving would make it easier to leave he would "put them in the stands until the end of their contract". He added: "In my opinion, that's not the way you have to do your job as a football player."

Mane and Wanyama 'still happy'
Wanyama, who was sent off for two bookable offences in the 1-0 loss at Carrow Road, has 18 months left on his contract. Mane, who has been linked with Manchester United, signed a four-year deal when he joined Saints in 2014.

Asked about the pair's commitment to Southampton, Koeman said: "I'm not doubting about that.

"It's too easy to mention after the mistake of Sadio, or the second yellow, that the players are showing that they like to move.

"It's too easy, and it's not like that. The player knows the position in the club, and what we think about the players. They are important players and they like to be here."

...as a ghy fan, I can't help but think: can we bring JonJo back to Anfield? Please?!?

Swansea City manager Alan Curtis has confirmed that the club has received some calls about the availability of Jonjo Shelvey.

The 23-year-old midfielder has seen limited playing time this season for Swansea despite earning his first start for the England national team.

Curtis said that he has spoken with Shelvey and knows his player wants more first-team minutes with EURO 2016 coming up in June. Curtis also spoke on Shelvey’s attitude, which has sometimes been an issue during his young career.

There’s always speculation with Jonjo. I speak to Jonjo regularly, he wants to stay and obviously he wants first-team football.

It’s an important season going into the Euros. I can’t quite guarantee him first team football at the moment, but he’s certainly got enough ability to play a big part for us. I’d love him to stay. I don’t think there has been any bids, I think there have been enquiries.

I’ve tried to speak to him and his attitude has always been in question, but he just wants to play and he gets frustrated if he is not in the team. If he is in the team he is not a problem at all, if he is not in the team he can be a bit more difficult to manage. He doesn’t come to you, you pull him in and find out when he is thinking about.

Shelvey is a fringe player on Roy Hodgson’s England team, and he will likely miss out on the EURO squad if he doesn’t find more playing time to prove himself in the Premier League.

Sky Sports is reporting that Newcastle has opened talks with Swansea and could submit an official bid sometime this week, which is expected to be around $15 million.

NBC Sports: West Ham's Lanzini Out For 6 Weeks With Thigh Injury

Posted Image
Quote:

Manuel Lanzini is set for a spell on the sidelines after reaggravating a thigh injury against Liverpool last week. West Ham’s owner David Gold confirmed on Twitter that Lanzini will miss five to six weeks of action.

The 22-year-old missed three weeks in December with a thigh problem, and he returned as a second-half substitute against Southampton on Dec. 28. In his first start back against Liverpool on January 2, he re-injured his thigh and was forced off after just 39 minutes.

Lanzini has impressed on his season-long loan from Abu Dhabi’s Al Jazira Club, scoring four goals in 12 Premier League starts.

The Hammers currently sit sixth on the table, but they have been riddled with injures throughout the season. Manager Slaven Bilic has been forced to go stretches without key players in Lanzini, Dimitri Payet, Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia.

Bilic will look at the upcoming fixture list as a good opportunity to stay high on the table, with matches against five of the bottom-six teams during Lanzini’s absence.

NBC Sports: Shelvey Calls Out Swansea For Selling Him, Says Team Will Regret Decision

Posted Image
Quote:

Swansea City is going to regret selling Jonjo Shelvey, according to Jonjo Shelvey.

Newcastle United, looking to get off the bottom of the Premier League table, has taken Shelvey on in a $12 million deal, and he’s happy just to feel wanted again.

“It is good to be here and I am excited,” Shelvey said while being unveiled at Newcastle. “I have been welcomed with open arms. It is a passionate city and I will fit in here the way I play.”

The 23-year-old has made 16 appearances in the Premier League, but has made just one start in the club’s last seven games, not even seeing the field in four of them.

“I want game time. I was told I didn’t suit the style of Swansea’s play by the manager. I never once asked to leave. I wasn’t going to play, wasn’t getting my chance and I needed a new challenge. I was lucky a massive club showed interest in me.”

Shelvey also clearly didn’t appreciate how the fans treated him towards the end of his time at the Liberty Stadium.

“The fans obviously got on my back a little bit towards the end without knowing what was going on behind the scenes. I was training hard, I was competing for a spot on the team, and I felt like I played a majority of the games in the season and picked up five bookings and was suspended and came back and never got a chance to get back into the team. So I felt a bit hard done by and the fans sort of got on my back saying I have a bad attitude without knowing what was going on behind the scenes. It is going to be Swansea’s loss in the end.”

....even for Chelsea, this can't be good....

(NBC Sports) LONDON (AP) Chelsea is sweating on the fitness of Diego Costa after the striker went to hospital for a shin injury to be assessed. Costa came off injured after scoring in the 3-3 draw with Everton on Saturday.

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink says Costa “was in a lot of pain. He will have a scan. We don’t know the result. I hope it’s not bad.”

The potential injury will not jolt Chelsea into signing another striker in the January transfer window.

Hiddink says “for the moment, we are doing nothing (in the transfer market). We hope Diego comes out of the hospital in good health and we go on as we are doing.”

Radamel Falcao remains unavailable with a “very serious” thigh injury, according to Hiddink. On loan from Monaco, he hasn’t played since October.

BBC Sport: Swansea Climb Out Of Relegation Zone With 1-0 Victory Over Watford

Posted Image
Quote:

Swansea City climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a gritty win against Watford.

With new head coach Francesco Guidolin watching from the stands, Swansea edged an uneventful first half thanks to Ashley Williams' header. Watford's Miguel Britos and Jose Manuel Jurado had chances to equalise but the hosts defended stoically to hold on.

Swansea, who are now 17th in the table, almost got a second but substitute Bafetimbi Gomis hit a post late on.

Having started the season in sparkling fashion, the Hornets' fourth straight loss leaves them eight points above the bottom three.

The spectre of relegation still looms large for Swansea but this crucial victory sees the Welsh side leapfrog Newcastle to go one point above the bottom three.

BBC Sport: Guidolin Named New Swansea Head Coach

Posted Image
Quote:

Swansea City have appointed former Udinese manager Francesco Guidolin as their new head coach. The Italian will have the final say on selection while working alongside Alan Curtis - who had been placed in interim charge - until the end of the season. Swansea, who sacked Garry Monk last month, are 18th in the Premier League.

Guidolin, 60, was at the Liberty Stadium for Monday's game with Watford but a club statement said he would only have a "watching brief". "At the moment it's not a good situation for the club, but we have a good team," Guidolin told the club's website.

"In Italy, I helped my team finish in a good position in the table, and that's what I hope to achieve here at Swansea. At the moment everything is new to me, so I need three or four days to talk to the staff and players. After that, I will have a precise idea of things.

"Alan Curtis is a legend at Swansea, and this is important for me. He knows everything about the club."

Former Chelsea midfielder Gabriele Ambrosetti has joined Swansea's staff as coach following Guidolin's arrival.

The south Wales club placed Curtis in caretaker charge after Monk's departure and then announced on 7 January that the 61-year-old would continue as interim boss until the end of the season.

But after the 4-2 home loss to relegation rivals Sunderland, Curtis said he would be willing to step aside if the club found a new boss before the end of the campaign.

Great little reports by Liverpool fan Wolfy ...

Norwich 4-5 Liverpool

Well what a game, I don't think you can say we've turned a corner or anything like that, but it will be an enjoyable watch tonight. A important 3 points which sees the reds up to 7th. Norwich have now suffered 3 straight defeats and are plummeting towards the bottom 3. They really could have done with a point but they gave it their all, if anything both sides 4 new defenders and a goalkeeper. Norwich will be disappointed with leading 3-1 and still losing, but another impressive showing from Roberto Firmino, with 2 goals and an assist keeping Benteke out of the team. Adam Lallana scored the winner in the stoppage time after Sebastian Bassong just leveled the scores at 4-4. Just watch MOTD is all I can say.

Crystal Palace 1-3 Tottenham

Tottenham continued their assault on the top 3 with a comfortable win away to Crystal Palace, who's form is looking more and more like relegation form. They fall to 11th with there 4th straight defeat. Harry Kane, Alli and Nacer Chadli were on the score sheet for Tottenham. Kane is now on to 13 league goals for the season and has proven he wasn't a one-season wonder. Crystal Palace stay stuck in mid-table but need to address their slump and sooner rather then later. They actually took the lead through a Vertonghen own goal and led for over half an hour but will be worried with the way they crumbled, conceding twice in the last 6 minutes to deny them a vital point.

Leicester 3-0 Stoke City

Leicester showed their quality with an impressive thumping at home to Stoke. Stoke never got going and registered just 3 shots on target in the 90 minutes (total of 3 shots). Jamie Vardy was back amongst the goals and now leads the league's scoring charts with 16. Danny Drinkwater also enhanced his growing reputation in the league with the opener and forgotten man Ulloa rounded off the scoring from the bench. Leicester go top and on this showing, I think they should stay up and around the top teams. Stoke will want to forget this and move on, they drop to 9th.

Man Utd 0-1 Southampton

Charlie Austin scores the winner and could this be one leg out the door for LVG? Southampton make it 3 straight games in a game low on quality. Man Utd were booed off the pitch after registering just one shot on target in another drab showing under LVG. They might be able to tighten up at home, but the one point I had in their favor despite all the criticism this season was that they didn't lose much at home. There can be no excuses, United were poor and conceded a 87th minute winner. Questions tomorrow morning for LVG.

Sunderland 1-1 Bournemouth

Benik Afobe was on the score sheet again as Bournemouth will be wondering how they didn't go home with all 3 points. They were the better side all game and should have scored more. Patrick van Aanholt's goal before half-time secured a vital point for Sunderland, who are 3 points adrift of 17th. Bournemouth will be kicking themselves for not winning this game to give themselves some breathing room, but if they can keep this level of performance up, they'll be safe, they sit 4 points above the drop zone.

Watford 2-1 Newcastle

Watford ended their poor run of form with a win against Newcastle who stay in the bottom 3. Newcastle are unpredictable to say the least, but Watford end their slump with an important 3 points. In truth, Newcastle never looked like winning this game and fell 2-0 behind through goals from Ighalo and Cathcart. Jamaal Lascelles gave Newcastle a lifeline in the 71st minute, but it was too little too late.

West Brom 0-0 Aston Villa

I thought West Brom would be too strong for Villa, but in a game Villa dominated from start to finish, they'll be disappointed with just a point. West Brom didn't manage a shot on target. They stay in mid-table but Villa are still cut adrift at the bottom of the table and will have to start turning some of these encouraging performances into 3 points. They've now collected 5 points from the last 3 games, which is better then any side in the bottom 5 but still not enough.

At time of writing, West Ham and Man City are level with a goal apiece. West Ham scored in the first minute with their only shot on goal so far through Enner Valencia, while Sergio Aguero leveled from the penalty spot. Carl Jenkinson has also gone off injured in a game where Man City have been the better side.

Seems Daibo may have already introduced me on here blush1

Here's the rest:

West Ham 2-2 Man City

A brace apiece from Valencia and Aguero meant the points were shared yesterday evening. It was an evenly matched game between two good sides that sees Man City move up to 2nd. West Ham recovered from their poor defeat to Newcastle last time out to lead twice, but Aguero pegged them back on both occasions. Man City are 3 points behind leaders Leicester and travel to Sunderland next on the 2nd of February. West Ham host Villa as they look to keep pressure on the European spots.

Everton 1-2 Swansea

An impressive away win sees Swansea pick up a vital 3 points thanks to goals from G. Sigurðsson and Ayew. Jack Cork scored an own goal in between the Swans' goals, all in the first half. It's a vital win for Swansea and a shock result in my book. Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on Roberto Martinez. Swansea are up to 15th and pull 4 points clear of the relegation zone with their second away win of the season, their also just 4 points behind Everton, who's win less run stretches to 5 games, their last win was on boxing day away to Newcastle. Their last home win? My birthday, 21st of November.

Arsenal 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea put in an impressive display to beat Arsenal this evening. Per Mertesacker seen red, while Diego Costa popped up with the winner in the first half. It's a huge blow to Arsenal, who lose for just the second time this season at home and they will stay in 3rd over the FA Cup weekend. Chelsea move up to 13th and continue their unbeaten run under Guus Hiddink. It's an excellent result for the blues, who can't get carried away just yet, but it is signs of improvement. Their still 14 points behind 4th and go to Watford next, who ended a run of 4 straight defeats by beating Newcastle yesterday.
