BBC Sport: LVG - Manchester United Have "Big Chance" At Top-4
Quote:

Louis van Gaal says Manchester United's top-four hopes would have been over had they lost to Manchester City, but believes they now have a "big chance" of Champions League qualification.

Marcus Rashford's goal earned a 1-0 derby win over City on Sunday. Van Gaal's side are sixth in the Premier League, but lie just a point behind their local rivals in fourth.

"The gap would have been too big if we had drawn or lost. It would have been very difficult," said the United boss. "Now it is in our own hands but we have to win our games. We have more home matches than away and we don't lose so much at Old Trafford - so we have a big chance."

United won at Etihad Stadium for the first time since December 2012, just three days after being knocked out of the Europa League by Liverpool.

"I thought we played fantastic in the first half and the second half was a test of survival because we were very tired," added Van Gaal. "We had only two days to recover after the Liverpool game and that is almost not possible.

"We have seen the result from Southampton today. Liverpool were 2-0 up at half-time and at full-time it was 3-2 to Southampton.

"I have not seen the match but I can only conclude it was because of tiredness and that is what we have done to them."

BBC Sport: Everton's Howard To Join Colorado Rapids At Season's End

Posted Image
Quote:

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard will join the Colorado Rapids in the summer. The 37-year-old has agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Major League Soccer outfit, bringing to an end 10 seasons at Goodison Park.

The United States international will be available for the Rapids from 4 July, when the MLS transfer window opens.

"I will remain an Evertonian for life," said Howard, who joined the Toffees from Manchester United in 2006. "This will always be my team, my club."

Howard signed for United in 2003, winning the FA Cup in his first season at Old Trafford before losing his place to Roy Carroll and, later, Edwin van der Sar.

Since joining Everton, he has, until recently, been the Toffees' first-choice goalkeeper, making 412 appearances for the club in all competitions. A knee injury and loss of form led to his replacement by Spaniard Joel Robles at the end of January.

Paul Bravo, Colorado's technical director and VP of soccer operations, believes Howard will prove a "pivotal signing".

He added: "Tim is exceptional, both as a player and a person. He proved it at the last World Cup for the US national team and he has been proving it for the last decade in the English Premier League.

"He has experience at the very pinnacle of the sport and we feel he has much still to offer on the pitch."

NBC Sports: Guardiola To Clean House At Manchester City?

Posted Image
Quote:

Pep Guardiola has instructed the Manchester City hierarchy to begin cleaning house ahead of his arrival in the Premier League this summer.

Among others that will surely be sold as well, Man City stars Yaya Toure, Vincent Kompany, Wilfried Bony, Eliaquim Mangala, Aleksandar Kolarov and Samir Nasri are all up for sale and to be sold at Guardiola’s behest, according to a report in the Sunday Times.

Toure and Kompany are without a doubt the most the most surprising of the six listed above — their 14 years of combined service to the club make them far and away two of City’s longest tenured and most central figures — but the former’s rocky history with Guardiola from their days at Barcelona, and the latter’s chronic and debilitating injury history, have long left their City futures well and truly in doubt, even before Guardiola’s arrival was announced last month.

Bony, the big, strong, powerful center forward, seems simply a poor fit for Guardiola’s possession-based system, which often bypasses a center forward altogether in favor of another attacking midfielder in the shape of a false-nine — Sergio Aguero will certainly give him something to think about there. Few City fans will be up in arms if/when any of the other three are moved along this summer.

$176 million: the combined fees paid for the six players Guardiola has reported instructed his soon-to-be employers to sell. A number of top players have already been linked with moves to the Etihad Stadium since Guardiola’s appointment was confirmed, so for every player that heads for the exit door this summer, there will be one (or two) new ones walking through the entrance.

NBC Sports: Pellegrini Leaves Door For Future PL Return

Posted Image
Quote:

While Manuel Pellegrini‘s Manchester City exit is imminent, the veteran manager is leaving the door open for a Premier League stay.

With Pep Guardiola set to take over the City reins in the coming months after his season finishes up with Bayern Munich, Pellegrini will be left out of a job, but likely not for long.

The 62-year old has coached at some of the biggest clubs in the world, including Real Madrid and now City, likely making him a hot commodity for any coaching vacancies that become available this offseason.

Pellegrini admits his time in England has been special, and the prospect of staying isn’t something he can rule out.

“It depends on the mentality of the manager,” he said. “I always remember when I finished with Real Madrid, I had a lot of different options and I chose Malaga because the project was interesting.

“It doesn’t matter which club you are going to, whether it’s a big or a small team, it depends on the project of the club and what they want to develop at the club and the players you can bring to the club.

“There are a lot of interesting things here in England because all the clubs have money to have a good project, so surely a lot of managers will be interested in a lot of clubs.”

While Manchester City has fallen off a bit during the 2015-16 season, Pellegrini is still widely respected as one of the world’s top managers. City currently sits fourth in PL, 15 points off the pace set by surprise leaders Leicester City.

Potential coaching vacancies at Manchester United and Chelsea could tempt the Chilean, however, United’s opening is expected to be filled by free agent manager Jose Mourinho ahead of next season.

NBC Sports: Giggs - Next Man United Coach Must Give Youth Academy Players A Chance

Posted Image
Quote:

Whether it’s Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho or Ryan Giggs himself that’s the Manchester United manager at the start of the 2016-17 season, the current Man United assistant manager believes the club’s youth academy is still the way forward, just as it was when he came through as a player.

With the recent emergence of academy products Marcus Rashford and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Giggs feels now is a pivotal point in United’s history, not only for the short-term, but for the long-term future of the club as well — quotes from the Guardian:

“I think it will always be part of the club’s philosophy. It’s part of the history, it’s what sets us apart from other teams. Yes, we can bring world-class players in from around the world but we want one of our own to be performing on that Old Trafford pitch, whether it’s a center forward, a winger, a defender … we need players to come through the ranks. That’s a massive part of the United history. We’re a club that gives youth a chance and that again goes back to Sir Matt Busby’s days.”

Giggs, a United academy product-turned-legend himself, knows all too well the history of the club’s youth academy as well as the benefits of a club the size of United producing its own first-team talent. Here’s the problem, though: whoever the manager is next season, he’ll be expected to compete for the Premier League title, or finish in the top-four at a minimum, otherwise he could be out of a job by this time next year.

Outside of what Mauricio Pochettino is doing at Tottenham Hotspur — and even there, Pochettino has signed a handful of up-and-coming youngsters, like Dele Alli and Eric Dier, from elsewhere — the idea of challenging for the PL title while bringing through more than one or two young players has proven merely a pipe dream.

To the brave soul who takes, or remains in, that job this summer … good luck.

The Guardian: Watford Explore Summer Moves For Joe Allen & Jordon Ibe?

Posted Image
Quote:

Watford are considering a summer move for the Liverpool pair Joe Allen and Jordon Ibe as they seek to capitalise on the players’ frustrations at Anfield.

Allen will enter the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract this summer but, despite initial discussions over an extension towards the end of last season, there have been no talks over a new deal since Jürgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers as the manager in October.

The former Swansea City midfielder has impressed when given the opportunity by Klopp but has started only 10 of the manager’s 38 games and has admitted he is fighting for his future at Anfield.

Ibe has also endured a difficult season at Liverpool and the England under-21 manager, Gareth Southgate, claimed that the winger had suffered a loss of confidence following his dismissal against Switzerland on Sunday.

The 20-year-old has been restricted to a bit-part role under Klopp and, with the German coach looking to the likes of Mario Götze to enhance Liverpool’s attack next season, Watford want to test both Ibe’s and Allen’s resolve to remain at Anfield.

Sky Sports: Peter Schmeichel Hails Leicester City Form Ahead Of Title Run-In

Posted Image
Quote:

Peter Schmeichel believes Leicester's experience of winning the Championship two years ago could prove crucial in their pursuit of the Premier League title this season.

Leicester, who are five points clear of Tottenham with seven games remaining, won promotion to the top flight in 2013/14 after topping the Championship with 102 points from their 46 games.

And Schmeichel, who won five titles with Manchester United, believes his son Kasper could be on the brink of claiming his first because of the pressure of that run-in two years ago.

"I know you can't compare the Championship to the Premier League, but a lot of the Leicester players only two seasons ago were in the same kind of situation having been on the same run," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"Having missed out for a few years they got it right two years ago and scored more than 100 goals, so there is experience of finishing the job. Can they do it in the Premier League? Only time will tell. They've got a five-point cushion and that's a nice position to be in but there is a very long way to go yet.

"Leicester are a very inexperienced team to be in the position they are in, bigger clubs like Liverpool have been there and failed to get over the line.

"It's a race between Spurs and Leicester. We will get, I think, a new Premier League champion.

"Spurs have been fantastic. They've played some very entertaining football, they've got great players, great individuals and they are going to push and push and it's looks like they are ready to take the challenge on, even in the longer run as well."

"The run-in doesn't matter, it's just what the team is doing that matters. Leicester and Spurs deserve to be up there because they are good teams so they have to finish the job."

Asked if Kasper was coping with the pressure, he added: "Kasper is coping really well. They are throwing the clichés out like: 'they are taking one game at a time' and 'they are enjoying their football', but it is the truth.

"They are really enjoying it, they have a fantastic squad, they are great friends and they do a lot of stuff outside football together."

Speaking of "mind the gap", the other 11am match today between Spurs & United has been delayed a minimum of 30 minutes...apparently, United decided to stay at a Trafalgar Square hotel last night, forgetting how murderous traffic can be from there to North London. laugh1 laugh1 laugh1
