NBC ProSoccerTalk: Mindless Rooney Lunge Leads To Straight Red Card
Quote:

It was the first straight red card of Wayne Rooney‘s 380-match Premier League career, and it was completely deserved.

The Manchester United captain will now miss the games against Everton, West Brom and Chelsea and will not be able to play for the Red Devils again until the Manchester derby vs. Manchester City on Nov. 2.

Watch the video above to see the incident, as Rooney simply runs up to Stewart Downing and kicks him knee-high. What on earth was he thinking at such a pivotal point in the game?

Manchester United’s Twitter feed were pretty quick to point out that the red card was Rooney’s first for the Red Devils since 2009, see Tweet below, but the red mist definitely descended as Rooney’s petulant streak reared its ugly head once again.

...and people wonder why I've long referred to Wayne Rooney as Shrek; I'm also at a loss for what's worse here: Rooney's red-card action OR the applause the fans at Old Trafford Old Toilet gave him as a result of it...

Besides the Merseyside Derby, there's one other derby of note this weekend: the North London Derby...it is, of course, Tottenham Hotspur and the Gunners of Arsenal. 2 clubs, 4 miles...and what could be one of the bitterest of English football derbies. Thoughts?
I always thought there was nothing more bitter in football then an Evertonian!

True to a point, but - and maybe this is just me looking at it from an American perspective here, Macca - but the Merseyside Derby's akin to a football version of the Hatfields & McCoys: two siblings that bitterly fight over everything, but God help the poor sap who gets in between them.

Alan Pardew has a meeting set up with his Newcastle boss. The fans want him out it looks like he will need to buck his ideas up or he will be gone by Christmas.
By most accounts, it would appear that Pardew's safe for now...
Excerpt

Multiple high-profile outlets in England are reporting that under-fire Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew will be keeping his job despite just three points through the club’s first six matches.

Pardew has made himself an enemy to a good deal of Newcastle fans, inspiring some fervent detractors to start the web site SackPardew.com and stage a protest outside St. James Park. From the head butting of Hull player David Meyler to seemingly blaming the fans for some of the club’s poor performances, he’s not beloved.

And then came the reports that owner Mike Ashley said Monday’s match against Stoke City was win or bust for the manager.

They lost, but it looks like it’ll be bust-free… for the time being.

NBC ProSoccerTalk: Premier League Roundup - City, Liverpool Rally For Big Wins
Quote:

On Saturday six Premier League games were on the slate and, as always, we were treated to some scintillating action.

Liverpool won in the PL for the first time since August, Man City rallied with late goals to go second and late drama sealed draws for Newcastle and Burnley. Elsewhere Sunderland and Hull bagged big wins as 19 goals were scored at an average of over three per game. Not to shabby.

Saturday's PL results....
-Liverpool 2, West Bromwich Albion 1
-Manchester City 2, Aston Villa 0
-Sunderland 3, Stoke City 1
-Leicester City 2, Burnley 2
-Swansea City 2, Newcastle United 2
-Hull City 2, Crystal Palace 0

Thoughts on Saturday's matches?

NBC ProSoccer Talk: Sunderland Players Offer Traveling Fans Refund For 8-0 Romp At Southampton
Quote:

Sunderland players have banded together to try and salvage the love of their supporters by offering full refunds for those who made the trip down to Southampton for last Saturday’s 8-0 romp.

It’s a classy move after what was one of the darkest days in Sunderland’s history. More than 2,500 fans made the 650 mile round-trip and each one will now have the option of being reimbursed for their troubles or to have the money donated to ‘Grace House’, a children’s hospice.

The idea was suggested by goalkeeper Vito Mannone, who was arguably at fault for three of the eight concessions: “I will personally talk to the team to see if it is possible to pay [for the fans’] tickets and their trip,” Mannone said. “We should do it because we didn’t put our foot [in], we didn’t work hard. We started the game well but after we conceded we threw in the towel – and I include myself.”

Sunderland captain, John O’Shea, led the rally cry. “We win and lose as a team, players, staff and fans. However, we wanted to acknowledge and thank the supporters who travelled such a long way to give us their backing and despite everything, stayed with us until the final whistle.”

The 8-0 thumping was the worst defeat the Black Cats have suffered in 32 years, leaving fans, players and coaches devastated. Manager Gus Poyet called it “the most embarrassed I’ve ever been on a pitch, without any doubt.”

The offer will cost the Sunderland players over $90,000 and fans have until November 5th to claim a refund. The Black Cats are currently 17th in the table having won one of their opening seven matches. This Saturday, they host Arsenal at the Stadium of Light.

I wouldn't say no to a refund but if you get beat no matter what the score was, you just have to take it on the chin.

NBC ProSoccer Talk: Report - Dirk Kuyt Headed To Southampton
Posted Image
Quote:

Southampton’s Dutch manager could be adding a fellow countryman to his playing staff at St Mary’s.

According to reports on Thursday from multiple UK outlets including The Sun, Daily Mirror and others, Fenerbache winger Dirk Kuyt could be on his way back to the Premier League to sign with Ronald Koeman’s Southampton in January.

Kuyt, 34, shone at the World Cup for the Netherlands this summer in an unfamiliar wing back role for the Oranje.

The former Feyenoord star would certainly be a good acquisition for Saints, as they continue their impressive start to the PL season. Koeman’s men are currently third in the PL on 16 points after five wins from their first eight games and an 8-0 win over Sunderland last weekend showcased their sublime attacking talents.

Where Kuyt would fit in at Saints is unclear and the fact that he’s no spring chicken make this rumor a little confusing as Southampton are a team loaded with young players and have a conveyor belt of talent ready to roll out of their famed academy. Their philosophy is to give young players a chance, but if Kuyt is available in January to help add depth to the squad, he’s definitely worth a punt.

Koeman will likely discuss the potential to sign Kuyt in his prematch press conference later on Thursday before Saints’ home match vs. Stoke City on Saturday.

Capable of playing in attack, midfield or even defense, Kuyt could be a handy addition with his bags of PL experience at Liverpool. He was hugely popular during his six-year spell at Anfield with his endless running appreciated by the home fans plus plenty of clutch goals, including a strike in the 2006-07 Champions League final, with 71 in 286 appearances. With Southampton eager to keep surprising everyone between now and the end of the season and trying to better last season’s finish of eighth, Kuyt’s nous could help Saints young crop of talented players kick on and push for a top six finish.

Let’s see what straight-talking Koeman has to say about this rumor…

NBC ProSoccerTalk: Report - 76ers owner close to buying Crystal Palace

Posted Image
Quote:

Could another American be making his way into the Premier League?

Reports suggest Apollo Global Management LLC co-founder Josh Harris is close to purchasing Crystal Palace. Harris already owns the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA and the New Jersey Devils of the NHL.

Sal Galatioto, who helped with the sale of the 76ers, believes that the London club is a good investment for Harris: Josh obviously knows how to run pro sports franchises. It’s a very interesting investment that should be a very good one for him over the long run. English Premier League soccer is arguably the best soccer in the world and it’s very valuable media content. It’s growing in other parts of the world, especially North America.

Should Harris’ deal with Palace go through, he would join John Henry (Liverpool), the Glazer family (Manchester United), Randy Lerner (Aston Villa), Ellis Short (Sunderland) and Stan Kroenke (Arsenal) as American billionaires with Premier League teams.

Harris was linked with a possible purchase of Aston Villa, but it looks like he now has set his sights on the London-based Palace.

Crystal Palace currently sit in 16th on the Premier League table, just one point clear of the relegation zone. After manager Tony Pulis quit just days before the start of the season, the Glaziers have struggled under replacement Neil Warnock, earning just eight points in as many matches.

As the English Premier League continues to gain supporters in the United States, having more Americans invest in clubs could lead to even further growth for the sport in our country.
