NBC Sports: Marseille Accept $42 Million Crystal Palace Bid For Striker

Posted Image
Quote:

Crystal Palace could be set to shock the Premier League with one of the biggest signings of the summer.

French news outlet L’Equipe is reporting that Marseille have accepted a $42 million bid accepted for striker Michy Batshuayi from the South London club.

The 22-year-old Belgian international has been linked with the likes of Tottenham and West Ham, with Palace quickly placing a large bid in an attempt to close the deal. While Marseille have reportedly accepted the bid, the player may turn down the move with other offers likely on the way in the coming days.

Batshuayi scored 17 goals in Ligue 1 last season while earning a consistent spot in the Belgian national team. He made his first appearance of EURO 2016 off the bench for Belgium in their win over Hungary, scoring with his first touch on the ball.

Connor Wickham led Palace in scoring last season with just five goals. An upgrade at the striker position was the club’s biggest need, and it looks like chairman Steve Parish and manager Alan Pardew are ready to spend big.

Crystal Palace is also in advanced talks to sign Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, who was named Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year last season for the fourth time in his career.

NBC Sports: How Will Manchester United Look Under Jose Mourinho?

Posted Image
Quote:

Two high-profile additions have us wondering just how wildly different Jose Mourinho will line-up Manchester United.

After purchasing Eric Bailly from Villarreal earlier this summer, Mourinho has now added Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

JPW took a stab at the Zlatan-centric lineup on Friday, and thinks it’ll be a solid and fashionable 4-2-3-1. Mkhitaryan oscillates his position on the field, and Mourinho will relish the opportunity to deploy him in different spots, while Ibrahimovic is an out-and-out center forward.

We know more big money signings are on the way but, assuming Mourinho doesn’t change his ways that much, here are two lineups we could see come August.

If Mourinho eases his way into the Old Trafford set — ha! — he could begin with something fairly laid back:

De Gea
Young – Smalling – Blind – Shaw
Carrick
Mkhitaryan – Rooney – Martial
Rashford – Ibrahimovic

--The second comes with pretty massive changes:

De Gea
Darmian – Smalling – Bailly – Shaw
Blind – Schneiderlin
Mkhitaryan – Rooney – Martial
Ibrahomivic

Boro likes to sign average has-been players with high wages, do they not? Valdes, Subotic and now this. I'm of the opinion that they will flop badly and go straight back down.

On the first two, I'd agree; on Negredo, not so much. Remember the 13-14 season when he played up-front alongside Aguero? Everyone focused on Aguero (which made sense given his talents) and ignored Negredo (sometimes to their peril), but he was second-fiddle there.

At Boro, if they're smart, they'll play to his strengths plus, given how Valencia treated him at times, I got a feeling he has something to prove once again, Random, and Boro might be the place to do it.

BBC Sport: Title Holders Fall On Opening Day

Posted Image
Quote:

Leicester's defence of their Premier League title began with a shock defeat at newly promoted Hull, who are managerless and relegation favourites.

Under caretaker boss Mike Phelan, Hull took the lead when Adama Diomande and Abel Hernandez combined acrobatically, with Diomande awarded the goal.

Riyad Mahrez replied from the penalty spot at the start of the second half after Demarai Gray had been fouled.

But Robert Snodgrass earned the Tigers victory after a cross was not cleared.

Danny Simpson's clearance from Ahmed Elmohamady's ball into the area only found Snodgrass on the edge of the box, and he drilled home.

It is the first time the reigning English champions have started the season with a defeat since 1989, when Arsenal lost at Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho made a winning Premier League start as Manchester United manager with a comprehensive opening victory at Bournemouth.

Juan Mata, who was substituted after coming on in last week's Community Shield, opened the scoring with a tap-in after Simon Francis' error.

Wayne Rooney headed the second before Zlatan Ibrahimovic marked his United league debut with a goal from 25 yards.

Adam Smith scored a consolation goal for the Cherries.

United were without world-record £89m signing Paul Pogba through suspension, while midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan started on the bench, with Mata preferred.

Liverpool's 4-3 win over Arsenal was a crazy way for both teams to start the season.

It was the kind of game in which it is difficult to pick out much of a pattern of how either side will look to play, but it did offer a few clues as to how they are shaping up.

Both teams will need to be better defensively than they were last season if they are to have any aspirations of winning the title this time around and, if you were to just go off Sunday's game, that does not appear to be the case.

But I have been involved in plenty of matches like that myself, where your tactics end up going out of the window as what starts out as a tight and technical battle ends up wide open with both teams going toe to toe on the attack.

They are exciting to be involved in and to watch, but they are not always a true reflection of a team and, in this case, I don't think it showed us how Arsenal or Liverpool will defend this season.

What we saw was how strong Liverpool now look from an attacking perspective and, like Arsenal, they are going to score a lot of goals this season.

The other thing that impressed me about the Gunners was the character they displayed. At 4-1 down, things looked pretty bleak and the fans were on their backs, but they responded pretty well.

They did not pull it back to 4-4 but they made the scoreline respectable, rather than it being an embarrassment.

Sky Sports: Conte - "Chelsea Can Get Better" After West Ham Win

Posted Image
Quote:

Antonio Conte insisted Chelsea still have room for improvement after they started the Premier League season with a 2-1 win over West Ham on Monday Night Football.

In Conte's first competitive game in charge, the Blues largely dominated at Stamford Bridge. They secured victory thanks to a late Diego Costa goal, after James Collins had cancelled out Eden Hazard's penalty early in the second half.

"The team played a good game with great intensity and good spirit," Conte told Sky Sports. "It's important to find the right spirit and intensity, we know that we can improve and we must improve a lot, but I am pleased for the team.

"The victory was deserved for me. Now we have to prepare for the next game."

Of the 11 players that started for Chelsea, 10 of them were also in the starting XI for the opening game of the 2015/16 season, with N'Golo Kante the only new addition.

While the former Leicester midfielder's most notable contribution was picking up an early yellow card, Conte saw an improved performance from Hazard, who scored and won the man-of-the-match award. "Eden played a good game," said Conte. "He has great ability and is very important in this team.

"I am very pleased with his performance but I know, and he knows, that he can improve a lot."

Reflecting on his first match in the Premier League, the Italian added: "I only knew the league through television and having played against English teams in the Champions League and Europa League, but it is very difficult.

"The atmosphere was fantastic and I want to say thank you to the fans because they followed the players at the end. There was great intensity and it was also very physical. I am delighted with the performance."

Was watching highlights of the wekend games even though the team's that win they weren't really showing any true quality. Probably being first game some players aren't fully fit but Liverpool seem ready and fit and could maybe get a decent win streak going

NBC Sports: Ibra Doubles Up As United Win 2-0

Posted Image
Quote:

Despite another slow start on Friday night, Manchester United kept its hot start alive with a 2-0 victory against a fierce Southampton side at Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba’s debut was what the fans were buzzing about before the match, however, Zlatan Ibrahimovic provided the Red Devils with the advantage in the 36th minute after rising to head home Wayne Rooney‘s cross from the right flank.

Just minutes into the second half, Southampton nearly found the equalizer when Dusan Tadic headed home a finish in the 49th minute. Unfortunately, the goal was called back for offsides on the attacker, keeping United in front.

No less than a minute later, Luke Shaw was barreled into inside the Saints penalty area by Jordi Clasie, which gave Ibrahimovic the opportunity to double the lead. The Swede calmly finished the chance from the penalty spot, putting a damper on Southampton’s chances.

The Saints didn’t have the ideal start, after they were forced to make a change just over 10 minutes in. Oriol Romeu made way for Jordy Clasie in the 12th minute after receiving treatment a few minutes prior.

Despite the early switch, Southampton kept up with United for much of the first half, but simply couldn’t capitalize on its chances. The Saints nearly found a chance to pull in front after 19 minutes, when Nathan Redmond broke loose on the right wing, before unleashing a cross that was a bit too high for the oncoming Tadic.

Originally not tabbed to go the distance by Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese manager allowed Pogba to play the 90 minutes in his debut.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan also made his first United appearance on Friday, coming in with a little under a quarter hour remaining to replace Juan Mata.

Boro win 2-1 over Sunderland In Renewal Of Tees-Wear Derby

Posted Image
Quote:

Cristhian Stuani scored twice on his Premier League debut as Middlesbrough beat Sunderland in the first Wear-Tees league derby in seven and a half years.

Alvaro Negredo assisted both goals, with Stuani's opener a brilliant 25-yard effort into the top corner. The Spaniard then unselfishly squared to Stuani for their second.

The Black Cats improved in the second half and Patrick van Aanholt gave them hope when he turned home after Brad Guzan parried Duncan Watmore's shot.

David Moyes' side had been booed off after a first half which saw them fail to test Boro debutant Guzan, replacing the injured Victor Valdes.

But after a second-half revival, they almost had a draw when Guzan fumbled another shot, but Donald Love turned the rebound wide.

Michail Antonio scored five minutes from time to give West Ham victory over Bournemouth in the first Premier League match at the London Stadium.

Antonio rose highest at the back post to head in Gokhan Tore's cross and decide a game of few chances.

The goal came eight minutes after Bournemouth's Harry Arter was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Cherries goalkeeper Artur Boruc saved well from Enner Valencia in the first half, while Adrian denied Joshua King.

'Hart not given a chance'
Jermaine Jenas, Former England midfielder and BBC football expert: I am sympathetic but it is the way it works. As a player all you want to do is to be given a chance to prove yourself and it seems that the decision was made before Pep Guardiola even met Joe Hart.

He doesn't understand Hart's importance in the changing room, or to the fans.

If I was Joe Hart I would stay. He can improve as a goalkeeper under Guardiola. I have had situations when managers don't fancy a player but if you are in training and impressing under their nose there is a point when they can't ignore you.

He can afford to have a year without playing. There is no major tournament for England at the end of the year. And where is he going to go?
