Middlesbrough maintained their unbeaten Premier League start in a dull goalless draw at West Brom.

Home left-back Brendan Galloway had the best chance of the first half, surging forward but striking tamely at Boro goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Albion's Craig Dawson headed just wide from a corner after the break, and Boro's Cristhian Stuani shot straight at Ben Foster from a tight angle.

Daniel Ayala's poked effort from close range was kept out by Foster later on.

Manchester City continued their 100% start to the season with a victory over West Ham that took them to the top of the Premier League.

City scored first when Raheem Sterling finished off a superb team move and Fernandinho headed in a second from Kevin de Bruyne's free-kick.

West Ham pulled a goal back in the second half when Michail Antonio nodded in Arthur Masuaku's cross.

Sterling added his second late on when he stroked home from a tight angle.

....well, here's a blow to Manchester City going into this week's matches....

Posted Image
Quote:

(The Guardian) Sergio Agüero has been found guilty of violent conduct and will miss the derby with Manchester United on 10 September, the first match of a three-game ban.

Manchester City had appealed against the charge and argued that if the striker was found guilty he should receive less than a three-game ban because, they said, cases involving a greater degree of violence had met with that punishment.

Yet the Football Association’s three-person independent commission decided the forward was guilty and merited the standard suspension. He will miss the derby at Old Trafford, plus the visit of Bournemouth on 17 September and the EFL Cup trip to Swansea City four days later.

The charge relates to City’s 3-1 victory over West Ham United on Sunday when Agüero appeared to elbow Winston Reid. An FA statement read: “The Manchester City forward was involved in a 76th-minute incident with West Ham United’s Winston Reid on Sunday, which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

“The club denied the charge and submitted further that, if it was to be found proven, the standard punishment would be clearly excessive. On finding the charge proven at a hearing today, an independent regulatory commission went on to reject the club’s further claim to decrease the three-match ban.”

The loss of Agüero is a considerable blow to City and Pep Guardiola. The manager has guided the team to an impressive start in which they have won their first five matches. Agüero, who has featured four times, has scored six goals, three in the Premier League to help City to the top of the table. The Argentinian has also registered eight times in derbies, the club’s third-highest tally.

BBC Sport: Palace Sign Ex-Arsenal Midfielder

Posted Image
Quote:

Crystal Palace have signed former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini on a contract until the end of the season.

Flamini, 32, left the Gunners this summer having made 246 appearances over two spells and winning three FA Cups.

The Frenchman, who also won the Serie A title in 2011 during five years at AC Milan, is Palace's fifth permanent signing of the summer.

Meanwhile, loan signing Loic Remy has been ruled out for a number of weeks with an ankle injury.

The 29-year-old joined from Chelsea on 30 August and has now returned to the Blues for treatment.

On Flamini, Palace manager Alan Pardew said he was pleased to "have secured a player of his stature", adding: "His playing ability will help us but also his leadership qualities and his ability of how to win games in a passing style."

Flamini described his new club as "very ambitious" and said the move was a "very interesting challenge".

The Eagles signed Andros Townsend, Steve Mandanda, James Tomkins, and Christian Benteke earlier this summer.

West Ham have stated they will issue life bans to any supporters actively involved in the crowd trouble at their home defeat to Watford

West Ham supporters fought among themselves, clashed with stewards and Watford fans as they witnessed their side throw away a two-goal lead to the Hornets.

“West Ham United unreservedly condemn the behaviour of the individuals involved in incidents during today’s fixture against Watford,” the club said on their website.
“While these isolated incidents were quickly brought under control, this behaviour has no place in football and West Ham United will work tirelessly to eradicate such incidents. We are currently undertaking an immediate full review with all stakeholders. This includes police, stadium landlord and operator LS185, who are responsible for appointing and managing stewards and security, to ensure we eradicate such incidents moving forward.
Our policy on this behaviour remains one of zero tolerance and we will work with the police and other stakeholders to identify the individuals involved. Once identified, they will be banned from attending any West Ham United fixture for life and we will request the courts serve banning orders to prevent these individuals attending any football.”

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic was surprised to hear about the incidents when questioned by the press after the match.
“I’ve been told about it, and I asked what riot? I really didn’t see anything,” Bilic said. “I knew that at 4-2 the stadium was not packed because people were starting to go home, but I didn’t see anything so I can’t give a comment on that.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm pretty tired of these managers who never see anything, despite the whole of the rest of the stadium seeing it! A bit of honesty please !!

BBC Sport: Swansea City 2, Chelsea 2

Quote:

Chelsea dropped their first points of the Premier League season as Diego Costa struck twice to rescue a draw in a feisty encounter at Swansea City.

Costa, who might earlier have been sent off, capitalised on poor defending to fire the dominant visitors in front.

But Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty and Leroy Fer's bundled goal two minutes later turned the game on its head.

Costa scored an acrobatic late second to salvage a point for Antonio Conte's team, who stay second in the table.

Italian Conte was aiming to become the fourth Chelsea manager to win his first four Premier League games in charge, joining Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti.

The visitors enjoyed total control for almost an hour before imploding with the concession of two goals in three second-half minutes. The second came after defender Gary Cahill lost the ball after he was dispossessed by Fer near the edge of his own box - with the England international saying afterwards he thought he had been fouled.

But Costa's brace at least protects the Italian's unbeaten record, with Chelsea - who ended the game with their captain John Terry appearing to be injured - now two points behind leaders Manchester City.

NBC Sports: Lukaku Hat-Trick Boosts Everton To Top-Qtr Of Table
Quote:

Romelu Lukaku hit a second-half hat trick in 12 minutes to lead Everton past old boss David Moyes and Sunderland on Monday at the Stadium of Light.

Everton moves level with Chelsea for second in the Premier League, with 10 points.

Sunderland is 19th, with a single point.

Defoe was Jermain-on-the-spot when a deflected shot found him on Maarten Stekelenburg’s doorstep, but the English striker belted the ball over the frame from in-tight.

At the other end, Lukaku powered a Yannick Bolasie cross at Pickford, but the Black Cats keeper slapped it just over the bar for a corner.

American midfielder Lynden Gooch came close to curling one home, but Stekelenburg was there to make the save and keep it 0-0 before halftime.

Idrissa Gueye and Yannick Bolasie set Lukaku up for his first two goals, both headers, before Kevin Mirallas sent the third helper to the big Belgian.

BBC Sport: West Brom Bought By Chinese Group

Posted Image
Quote:

West Bromwich Albion's long-awaited takeover by a Chinese investment group has been completed, the Premier League club have announced.

Former chairman Jeremy Peace agreed a deal to sell to the group, led by entrepreneur Guochuan Lai, last month.

"I'm delighted to complete the acquisition and to become the next steward of the club," said Lai. Peace, who took over as chairman in 2002, added: "It has been a tremendous privilege to lead the Albion."

Lai, 42, oversaw the growth of landscaping company Palm in his home country before retiring in May 2014 to focus on private investment. Palm, which was valued at £1.8bn on the Chinese stock exchange, has contributed to the takeover.

The deal was agreed in June and had been waiting for approval from the Financial Conduct Authority and the Premier League.

Albion are the third West Midlands club to be bought by Chinese investors this summer following the recent takeovers of Aston Villa and Wolves.

Peace added: "I am proud that 11 of my 15 seasons as chairman have been spent in the Premier League whilst three others brought automatic promotion from the Championship.

"Guochuan Lai has been a supportive partner during the handover process and we have both done everything possible to move the club forward."

BBC Sport: Hull Caretaker Manager Offered Permanent Spot

Posted Image
Quote:

Mike Phelan says he has been offered the manager's job at Hull City.

The 53-year-old, caretaker boss since Steve Bruce's departure in July, was named Premier League manager of the month for August. But, with a takeover of the club pending, Phelan's long-term future at the club has been uncertain.

"It's a case now of sifting through the offer and getting down to what hopefully will be further discussions," he told BBC Radio Humberside. "I don't want to talk about the money, I don't want to talk about what the contract entails because, to be frank, it's nobody else's business.

"You do want parity with the Premier League, and going forward hopefully that's what will happen."

Despite starting the season with just 13 fit first-team players, Phelan guided the Tigers to an opening-day win over champions Leicester City, followed by a victory at Swansea.

Only an injury-time Marcus Rashford goal prevented Hull getting a point against Manchester United, before last week's draw at Burnley.

Phelan said there was "no great rush" to agree the deal, adding he was focusing on Saturday's Premier League game against Arsenal (15:00 BST).

"I would like to have got it done weeks ago," said Phelan. "But it's only in this last 24 hours we've ended up in this state of affairs with pounds, shillings and pence."

Phelan was Manchester United's first-team coach until 2008, when he became assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson. He left Old Trafford in 2013 and spent a year with Norwich City before joining Hull in 2015 as assistant manager.

A takeover of the club by a Chinese consortium recently fell through but Chinese-American businessman Chien Lee is reportedly interested. Owner Assem Allam, who took charge in 2010, put Hull up for sale in 2014.

"There's still the takeover in the background and I find myself in the middle of that, trying to sort out my future," Phelan added. "I don't know who is involved any more and how far discussions have gone. It is possibly a frustrating thing from my point of view."

(BBC Sport) We had some shocking news in the Premier League this week, with Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare out for up to six months after breaking his thighbone in a car crash.

The 26-year-old Senegal international was airlifted to hospital after a crash on the M4 motorway in London on Sunday. The injury also means he will miss the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

"He isn't having the best of times, but we're all very supportive," said manager Alan Pardew. "We love Pape and can't wait to have him back."

NBC Sports: Henderson Strike The Difference As Liverpool Wins Over Chelsea
Quote:

Chelsea has made it a trend of starting games slowly this season, and Liverpool made the hosts pay on Friday night at Stamford Bridge.

The Reds ended Chelsea’s perfect start after first-half goals from Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson stunned Antonio Conte‘s men for the 2-1 victory.

Henderson picked out the top corner from outside the penalty area after 36 minutes, leaving Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois with no chance at making the save.

Liverpool took the early advantage in the 17th minute, when Lovren brilliantly placed Philippe Coutinho‘s cross past Courtois. For the Croat centerback, the goal marked his first for the Reds in the Premier League and his third overall since joining the club.

Chelsea’s backline struggled for much of the opening stanza as David Luiz was thrown into the fire for the first time since returning to the club from Paris Saint-Germain. The Brazilian started in place of the injured John Terry, however, Luiz and Gary Cahill struggled mightily at times in organizing the defense.

The second half started out much better for the Blues, who began to create more chances, and Chelsea found a consolation with 30 minutes remaining.

Nemanja Matic made a superb run forward at the hour mark to provide Diego Costa with his fifth goal of the Premier League season, giving the Blues a chance down the stretch.
