BBC Sport: Tony Pulis Extends Contract With West Brom Through 2018

Posted Image
Quote:

West Brom manager Tony Pulis has signed a new contract, extending his deal at The Hawthorns by a year to 2018.

The 58-year-old Welshman arrived at the club in January 2015 and has guided the Baggies to 13th and 14th-place finishes in the Premier League.

The club was sold to a Chinese investment group, led by entrepreneur Guochuan Lai, in September.

"This is a time of great change at Albion and when that happens you need continuity," said Pulis. "I want to build things here and play my part in improving the club. You cannot do these things overnight but I do believe, step by step, we are making advances.

"I think the bulk of our fans understand the process we embarked upon under the shadow of relegation less than two years ago."

Pulis has been criticised by some sections of the Baggies support for the team's style of football, but says his priorities are keeping the club in the top flight and in profit.

The club reported pre-tax profits of £14.7m and £7.6m in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

West Brom broke their transfer record to sign midfielder Nacer Chadli from Tottenham for £13m in the summer, but Pulis was frustrated by their failure to bring in more of his targets.

Chairman John Williams said the new owners' aim of moving West Brom into the top half of the Premier League would be achieved gradually.

"The takeover announcement made it clear this new era would work to progress Albion to an established top-10 club without jeopardising continuity on and off the field," he added. "With this is mind, I am pleased we have extended Tony's contract. The board and the owner believe this extension will bring us the key dual benefits of stability and improvement."

West Brom are 13th in the Premier League with 10 points from nine games.

Remember before the Liverpool-United match those comments of Mourinho's in reference to referee Anthony Taylor? That's what the FA are investigating and if past infractions of Mourinho's are any indication, if there's meat on the bones there, they'll nail his hide to the wall.

NBC Sports: Costa & Hazard Pull Blues To Within One Of The Top Runners
Quote:

Southampton came into Sunday’s matchup at St. Mary’s in good form, but even Claude Puel was powerless to stop the Chelsea machine that is whirring at full tilt.

A first-half poke from Eden Hazard put the Blues up, and an absolute wonder strike from Diego Costa before the hour mark sent Chelsea on its way, just a point off Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 win over the Saints who saw a six-match unbeaten streak halted.

NBC Sports: Lukaku & Everton Shred Hammers
Quote:

Every team has its boogey opponent, and for West Ham, it’s Everton and Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku scored against the Hammers for the seventh straight match, and he set one up for Ross Barkley as well, as Everton got back to winning ways at Goodison Park.

West Ham owned the first dangerous moments of the match, with Pedro Obiang rifling over from near the penalty spot under pressure in the 11th minute, while Dimitri Payet had an attempt pushed wide by Joel Robles moments later.

The Hammers carved up Everton in midfield early on, causing Ronald Koeman to pace nervously on the sidelines while offering some agitated thoughts to his players. Everton had a moment of danger down the other end as Romelu Lukaku led a break down the left. His pull-back fell to no one, but the ball wasn’t cleared before Gareth Barry nearly curled in a stunner, just firing over the crossbar from distance. Replays showed a shot from Yannick Bolasie struck the arm of a sliding Mark Noble, but no penalty was given.

As Everton collected themselves at the back and built forward, Lukaku had a big chance on 21 minutes, in on goal on a ball threaded through the box, but he couldn’t collect with his right foot and the chance was lost. An even better chance was spurned on 25 minutes as Ross Barkley collected on the spot from Bryan Oviedo, and a touch right opened things up, but Adrian produced a stunner of a save to keep Barkley out on the deflection.

The rest of the first half was uneventful, but Everton struck first after the break through the main man Lukaku. A poor clearance saw the ball fall to Seamus Coleman in the box. His shot was blocked and sent off to the right, but Yannick Bolasie crashed the rebound and poked it to Lukaku standing all alone directly in front of net who nodded home with his head for his 50th league goal for Everton.

Andre Ayew came on past the hour mark in place of the booked Obiang for his first appearance since the season opener when he injured his hamstring. West Ham nearly had an equalizer with 20 minutes left on a beautiful curler from Noble, but Robles kept it out with an acrobatic leaping save.

Everton doubled the lead with 15 minutes to go and effectively ended the game. Lukaku was again involved, holding the ball on the end line to the right, and as Barkley snuck in at the far post, Lukaku effortlessly flicked the ball over the defensive line at the feet of Barkley, and the 22-year-old blasted the ball into the back of the net on the volley.

NBC Sports: Bony & Allen Punish Former Employers

Posted Image
Quote:

Wilfried Bony bagged a brace against his old squad as Stoke City handed Swansea City another loss, this one a 3-1 defeat at the Britannia Stadium on Monday.

Ramadan Sobhi forced Swansea into an own goal for Stoke’s other goal, while Wayne Routledge netted for Swans.

Swansea remains 19th with 5 points, and have gained one point in three matches under new coach Bob Bradley.

Stoke moves up to 12th, with 12 points.

Bony scored after just three minutes, darting onto a mishit Joe Allen shot and blasting it into the roof of the net from inside the six. 1-0.

The visitors drew level when Gylfi Sigurdsson chipped a ball toward Routledge, who would’ve earned a penalty had he not headed home; Phil Bardsley was hugging him like a cheap suit.

Marko Arnautovic had a shot deflect wide of the goal soon after, and Charlie Adam hammered a shot off the right post in the 23rd minute.

Then Arnautovic rounded Lukasz Fabianski before passing the ball off the left post. Swans would soon run out of fingers to count their blessings.

That’s not to say the Welsh side had no chances, as Routledge forced Lee Grant into a tremendous save in the 43rd minute. The corner was wasted, though, and we went to halftime level at 1.

Stoke went ahead through Sobhi, the exciting Egyptian winger who worked the left side of the box before drawing a shot across goal that Swans’ center back Alfie Mawson pushed over his own line. It seems destined to be an own goal.

Arnautovic slipped Joe Allen through on Fabianski in the 73rd minute, and Allen pushed his own rebound to Bony for a headed finish.

Swansea should’ve had a penalty kick when Routledge was slammed down by Erik Pieters inside the 18. No luck for Bradley and Swans on a rough night in Stoke.

NBC Sports: Costa Strikes Sees Chelsea Defeat Boro 1-0, Go Top Of The Table
Quote:

Middlesbrough gave it a true go, but it wasn’t enough to get by the Premier League’s most in-form team.

Diego Costa struck just before halftime to become the first in the English top flight to a double-digit goal tally, and Chelsea clung to its lead under waves of pressure late as the Blues won their sixth straight match, keeping a clean sheet across all six.

The hosts looked dangerous on the break early. They charged forward on five minutes as Gaston Ramirez broke, but his ball into the middle for a wide-open Marten De Roon was behind him, and Alvaro Negredo eventually put the chance wide. Eden Hazard was felled hard by Adam Clayton minutes later, earning the latter the game’s first booking.

The game devolved into a foul-fest until the 28th minute when Chelsea had its first real chance. A ball over the back line fell to Victor Moses, who cut in from the right edge of the box. Moses cut back for Pedro waiting all alone in the middle of the box, and while the former Barcelona man will wish he put the finish further into the corner, his attempt to roof the ball was tipped superbly over the bar by the fingertips of his former teammate Victor Valdes.

Negredo had a headed chance on 35 minutes, but he was put off by Ramirez who came flying in wanting to take the chance too, and it was sent wide. Chelsea then found the opener minutes from the break, as a Hazard corner fell into a crowd in the box, and Costa was the man quickest to the chance.

Halftime came without any more momentous occasions, but the goal had clearly put Chelsea on top of things at Riverside Stadium. The Blues had a chance just seconds out of the break, as a spin from Hazard sprung Marco Alonso. His sliding effort was saved by Valdes, and the rebound was sent over the bar by Calum Chambers who beat Pedro to the ball.

Things were quiet before the hour mark, until Chelsea again began to pour forward. Costa threated Moses through brilliantly, but the Nigerian failed to score as Valdes closed him out. Costa picked out another teammate on 68 minutes as Pedro had Valdes beaten, but slammed the bar trying to place a shot into the corner.

Adama Traore was incisive for Middlesbrough, but he struggled to actually produce signifncant chances despite his ability to weave through players in midfield. Eventually, the hosts did have another chance to level things up. Traore left defenders in his wake before finding Negredo, who let it bounce before whacking a vicious volley that was well saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Both teams had an attacking intent as the game wound down, with Middlesbrough truly going for a goal. Chelsea brought on Branislav Ivanovic to deal with the pressure from the home side, while Boro brought on Stewart Downing and Viktor Fischer. The subs wouldn’t change the flow of the game, as Chelsea hung on through four minutes of added time for the win.

The three points moves Chelsea top of the table, a place they deserve on their current run. Middlesbrough, meanwhile, gets nothing from its spirited effort, leaving Boro with 11 points in 15th place.

...from the BBC Sport live feed...

Shay Given, Stoke City & Republic of Ireland goalkeeper on MOTD2 Extra: We will be talking about Bravo all season because it was such a big decision to sell Joe Hart in the summer.

For me Hart is a better goalkeeper. Bravo was brought in supposedly because he is better with his feet but I don't think Joe was given time to show he was good enough with his feet.

Guardiola made it quite clear for whatever reason, perhaps because Hart was a big personality in the dressing room or because he is a fan's favourite, (that Hart would leave).
