(BBC Sport) Harry a free Hornet

Posted Image
--Good news for Watford mascot Harry The Hornet. He is off the hook after his alleged mocking dive in front of Crystal Palace's Wilfired Zaha during yesterday's match at Vicarage Road.

Former England manager Sam Allardyce had suggested the mascot's behaviour be "looked at" by the FA and the Premier League.

Mr Hornet is therefore free to carry on his official club duties.

NBC Sports: Liverpool Regain 2nd After Complete Performance Over Stoke
Quote:

Liverpool regained the second spot in the Premier League on Tuesday after defeating Stoke City, 4-1, at Anfield.

Stoke held the lead early on but goals from four different contributors helped the Reds get back on pace as the hosts captured a convincing three points against the Potters.

Daniel Sturridge scored less than a minute after entering the pitch for the Reds, also marking his first goal of the PL season in the 70th minute.

The third goal came just prior to the hour mark when Giannelli Imbula scored an own goal. The Stoke defender was forced into a difficult position when Divock Origi‘s low cross into the path of Sadio Mane was guided goalward by Imbula.

The Potters put up a good fight in the opening half, but Liverpool managed to pull out a pair of finishes in the final 10 minutes of the stanza to take the lead going into the break.

Roberto Firmino smacked a wicked shot off both posts before it trickled over the line in the 44th minute to give the Reds the lead after Adam Lallana scored nine minutes prior.

Lallana notched his seventh goal of the season in the 35th minute when the Englishman received the ball from Mane with a tight angle to shoot, before powering his shot past Lee Grant to equalize at 1-1.

While the hosts dominated much of the early opportunities in the match, it was Stoke that took the lead on 12 minutes.

After a well-timed move forward, Jonathan Walters scored the opener by powering his near-post header past goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, despite the Belgian getting a touch to the effort.

Mignolet did his best to avenge the mistake just seven minutes later when the shot-stopper kept Joe Allen off the scoresheet from close range.

The Reds nearly found an equalizer in the 24th minute when Firmino smashed a shot goalward that was cleared off the line by a stationary Peter Crouch.

NBC Sports: Alli Leads Spurs Comeback Against 10-Man Saints

Posted Image
Quote:

Saints led inside the opening two minutes at St. Mary’s, but they were undone by a controversial sending off of Nathan Redmond which visiting Tottenham capitalized on for a 4-1 win.

Dele Alli scored the opener and closer, with the meat of the sandwich coming via Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.

Southampton went ahead just 70 seconds into the match when a free-kick from James Ward-Prowse curled into a perfect position, and Virgil van Djik lept incredibly high to meet it, powering home the header for a lightning-quick 1-0 lead.

Following the goal, Southampton pressed incredibly hard, throwing Spurs completely out of whack. With Tottenham back on their heels, Saints ran them ragged for the opening 15 minutes, with the best chance for a second coming on 17 minutes when a dangerous cross from Ryan Bertrand down the left nearly met Jay Rodriguez who had beaten Danny Rose, but Rose recovered to make the tackle at the last second. The ball sat untouched for a moment, eventually cleared.

Finally, Tottenham recovered, and took advantage of a lucky break. After finally collecting themselves, a 19th-minute cross from Moussa Sissokho clipped the back of Nathan Redmond and popped high in the air. Dele Alli found himself all along in front of net, and he met the ball with his head, directing it on and in despite a last-ditch challenge from van Djik.

Following the Spurs goal, the game slowed and things became cagey. The next good chance didn’t fall until the 43rd minute as Victor Wanyama received a ball from Rose in the box and glided past a defender, but the Kenyan couldn’t get a shot off in time, and he was closed down by Jose Fonte who slid in and deflected the shot out of danger.

The halftime break came and went, and Spurs would take the lead shortly after. In the 53rd minute, Harry Kane rose above Oriol Romeu to meet a corner, and he bagged the game’s third headed goal to put Spurs up 2-1.

It would get far worse for Saints, as Sissokho fed a delicious ball to Alli on the break just moments later. Alli was challenged hard by Redmond, and appeared to stumble near the top of the box under a slight shirt pull. The young Spurs midfielder recovered and eventually fired wide, which caused referee Mike Dean to pull back advantage and award a penalty, also handing Redmond a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. The decision was controversial because it looked clear that Mike Dean awarded the decision for the pull, which clearly happened outside the box with defenders in the area.

With Spurs a man up and a chance to put the game away, Harry Kane blasted the penalty miles over the bar, looking back down at the turf where a sizeable divot was evident next to the ball. Replays show his plant foot slid a good distance on the kick, causing the ball to sail so high.

The man advantage allowed the visitors to dictate the pace of play, and they had another big chance on the 70-minute mark as a cross from Sissokho right along the baseline clipped out to Christian Eriksen at the top of the box, and with all day to pick a shot, he rattled the crossbar.

Spurs finally put the game away with a breakaway goal from substitute Heung-Min Son in the 85th minute, and Southampton were unable to put forth any significant fight down a man. They added salt to the wound with another two minutes later as Danny Rose displayed some silky moves and Alli finished it off cooly.

The win moves Spurs to 36 points, back within just one of Arsenal in the final Champions League place. Southampton, meanwhile, stays in the top half of the table, but fails to capitalize on the opportunity to move further towards a more guaranteed Europa League position.

NBC Sports: Hull Draw With Everton; Snodgrass Heroics Cancelled By Barkley Equalizer
Quote:

The team at the bottom of the table at the turn of the calendar year has only survived three times in Premier League history. Hull City may not have to worry about that.

Robert Snodgrass delivered two exquisite free-kicks, as the first crashed into the post but the second found the back of the net to give Hull City a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Ross Barkley rose high in the air six minutes from full time to peg back the home side, leaving the sides to share the points with a 2-2 finish. Still, the draw pulls Hull off the bottom of the table, leaving Swansea City a point in their wake.

Hull City was the more incisive and attacking side in the opening few minutes, and they were rewarded after 6 minutes. A corner came in from Robert Snodgrass to the near post, and Curtis Davies met it there and nodded it across the face of goal. With all the defenders sucked up to the near post towards the initial ball, Michael Dawson was at the far post where Davies’ flick fell, and he whacked it into the back of the net for an early home lead.

The Toffees responded immediately, and nearly came level just seven minutes later. A ball into the box from Gareth Barry from the left met the head of Seamus Coleman, who powered the ball on net, but it clattered the inside of the post and unluckily came back out, cleared by the Hull defensive scrum.

Nevertheless, it was clear Everton was the brighter side following the opener. They pressured David Marshall‘s box on numerous occasions through the 20th minute, when Hull had a chance of their own to go 2-0 up. A cross from Ahmed Elhomamady on the right met the crown of Dieumerci Mbokani who beat Coleman in the air, but his header was weak and cleared.

The game closed down, and it appeared Hull would take a lead into halftime, but just before the break, Hull City goalkeeper David Marshall had a horrible moment to gift Everton a goal. With a corner swung in by the Toffees, Mbokani got in Marshall’s way, looking to clear the ball with his head, and when Marshall rose behind him to punch clear, the ball clipped off the inside of his fist and instead went backwards into his own net, ticking the score to 1-1 after 45 minutes.

After the break, goals were there for the taking, but the woodwork denied both sides. Everton had a chance just two minutes after play resumed, as his shot pinged off Dawson and was tipped off the bar by a Marshall save. Then minutes later, Robert Snodgrass delivered a delicious, curling free-kick that slammed into the corner of the bar after having beaten Robles.

He’d get another chance, however, after a soft foul was given outside the Everton box when Leighton Baines was judged to have pushed down Harry Maguire. Snodgrass presented another brilliant delivery, and this time it went in, curling around the wall and tucking just inside the top-left corner.

They again couldn’t hold on, as Everton struck six minutes from full time as a nobody closed down Leighton Baines on the end line left of the box. The England international whipped in a cross, meeting the head of Ross Barkley who rose to head in the equalizer. They nearly went on to win it, as substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed just wide a minute before added time.

The points shared means Hull City moves to 13, off the bottom of the table but still four points back of safety. Swansea City now sits on the bottom, and they take on Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve. Everton, meanwhile, move to 27 points, but remain in seventh, still six back of Manchester United in front of them.

If Tottenham Hotspur had one eye already looking to Wednesday’s massive London derby against Premier League-leading Chelsea (Watch live, 3 p.m. ET, on NBCSN and online via NBCSports.com), they certainly didn’t show it on Sunday, smashing Watford 4-1 at Vicarage Road in the first PL game of 2017.

Harry Kane and Dele Alli provided all the goals Tottenham would need — and more — as the central figures of a thoroughly dominant first-half performance....

BBC Sport: Sofiane Feghouli Red Card Overturned By FA

Posted Image
Quote:

West Ham's Sofiane Feghouli has had the red card shown to him during Monday's defeat by Manchester United rescinded by the Football Association.

The midfielder was sent off by referee Mike Dean for a challenge on Red Devils defender Phil Jones 15 minutes into a match the Hammers lost 2-0.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic said Jones "made a meal" of the tackle from the Algeria international.

He will now be available for Friday's FA Cup tie against Manchester City.

NBC Sports:: History Denied As Chelsea Fall 2-0 To Spurs

Posted Image
Quote:

Dele Alli scored a brace for the third-straight match, both off feeds from Christian Eriksen, as Tottenham Hotspur scored a resounding 2-0 win over Chelsea at White Hart Lane on Wednesday. The result stops Chelsea’s bid to set a new English top flight record for consecutive wins. The Blues’ 13-straight wins are tied with three other teams.

Spurs climb into third with the win, seven points back of first-place Chelsea. The Blues have a five-point lead on Liverpool.

An electric atmosphere greeted the opening stages, and it seemed clear from the first that we were in for a major midfield battle with the protagonists carrying the names Kante and Dembele.

Spurs had the better of the first 20 minutes, and a Chelsea counter saw Pedro and Diego Costa in each other’s faces.

Christian Eriksen and Victor Wanyama both tempted the Blues goal, forcing Thibaut Courtois to dive though the offers went wide.

Tactics were called into play, as expected under bosses Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino.

Costa took a terrific square pass from Eden Hazard and took a touch toward the top of the 18 before blazing over the bar.

Gary Cahill slipped, then saw yellow for taking down a rushing Eriksen. The free kick from the right was swept over the line and to the back post, but Courtois parried Eric Dier‘s decent header back across goal.

It was a bit of foreshadowing, as Dele ran between Victor Moses and Cesar Azpilicueta to head over the flying Courtois in the second minute of stoppage time.

Costa quickly found himself on the end of another opportunity after the break, with Hugo Lloris getting horizontal to slap the ball away from the near post. Soon after, Hazard nodded off the outside of the goal.

Spurs have been exceptional at White Hart Lane this season, and Dele and Eriksen combined for a second goal to give them a cushion in the 54th minute. Again, Dele rose between Moses and Azpilicueta to finish the chance.

Conte went for offense by bringing in Willian for Marcos Alonso in the 65th minute, then doubled down 12 minutes later by removing Kante for Cesc Fabregas.

But Chelsea couldn’t get behind the Spurs backs to truly test Lloris again, and the streak was cooked at the Lane.

Merseyside vs. Manchester on Sunday across the Premier League......

NBC Sports: Toffees Hammer City 4-0 At Goodison Park

Posted Image
Quote:

After Everton’s second goal, Pep Guardiola was shown with a gloomy expression, staring straight into the ground without even watching as the game continued on. It was a fitting expression as Everton’s cutting edge on the counter-attack downed a leaky Manchester City 4-0 at Goodison Park.

On a day of Manchester vs. Liverpool, the latter struck the first blow, leaving Manchester City a whopping 10 points adrift of the league’s top spot as Everton’s counter-attack was ruthless, a stark contrast to the toothless visitors. The Toffees picked up four shots on target on the day, and Claudio Bravo came up empty-handed on all four.

NBC Sports: Manchester United & Liverpool Draw 1-1 At Old Trafford
Quote:

A rivalry with plenty of buildup produced a clunky game that needed a late moment to savor a draw as things ended level 1-1 at Old Trafford.

A penalty for handball on Paul Pogba gave Liverpool a 1-0 first-half lead, and the Reds seemed comfortable to defend that advantage.

It broke down late, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic produced an incredible looping header to draw United level and salvage a point with six minutes to go.
