NBC Sports: Mourinho Claims United Made Mistake In Selling Chicharito

Posted Image
Quote:

Jose Mourinho hasn’t enjoyed the success that he would have liked to have in his first season at Old Trafford, and he brought up a familiar name on Friday when discussing someone that could have really helped his side.

Despite boasting one of the world’s top strikers in Zlatan Ibrahimovic — who has 27 goals on the season — Mourinho continues to bring up Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, who the club sold in 2015 during Louis Van Gaal‘s tenure.

Mourinho has stated before that he never would have sold the Mexican international, Angel di Maria or Danny Welbeck because they offer too much upside. “We have good players, they are creative players, they can create, but they are not the kind of guy that is naturally a killer,” Mourinho said.

“I give a simple example — in the way we play at Old Trafford, in the way we dominate opponents, in the way we play in the box, I think Chicharito would have scored 20 goals easy.

“Even coming from the bench for the last 10 or 20 minutes, he would have 20 goals. He is the guy that naturally the ball comes here, rebound here, rebounds there, boom, goal.”

United has had its share of struggles scoring this season when it comes to anyone not named Zlatan, and currently Juan Mata is the team’s second-leading scorer with 10 goals. However, the Spanish international is out injured.

This season, the Red Devils have scored just 43 goals, which ranks eighth highest in the PL.

BBC Sport: Everton Defeat Outgoing Champions 4-2 In Wild Goodison Affair

Posted Image
Quote:

Everton registered their seventh straight home league win as Romelu Lukaku scored twice to check Leicester's renaissance under boss Craig Shakespeare.

Tom Davies poked in for the hosts after 30 seconds, before Leicester rallied with a slick counter-attacking goal from Islam Slimani and a superb free-kick from Marc Albrighton.

But Leicester, much changed before Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final at Atletico Madrid, never looked comfortable.

Lukaku headed in a Ross Barkley cross to draw Everton level and Phil Jagielka was allowed too much space at a corner as the Toffees reached the break ahead.

Lukaku drilled in from close range after the interval and the withdrawal of the bright Demarai Gray and striker Jamie Vardy seemed to signal Leicester's attentions turning towards Europe.

Man United Push 10-Man Sunderland Closer To Relegation

Bottom club Sunderland's hopes of avoiding relegation suffered another setback as Manchester United eased to victory to climb to fifth in the table.

Sunderland played with 10 men for more than 45 minutes after Sebastian Larsson's controversial red card for a challenge on Ander Herrera.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had already put United ahead with a sublime, curling 20-yard effort.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan made it 2-0 before Marcus Rashford drilled in the third.

Sunderland are 10 points from safety with just seven games left and have not scored for seven matches.

United, who move above Arsenal, are four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City with one game in hand over their neighbours.

BBC Sport: Ross Barkley - Everton manager Ronald Koeman warns midfielder he could be sold

Posted Image
Quote:

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley must sign a new contract or he will be sold, manager Ronald Koeman has warned.

The 23-year-old, who provided an assist for the first of Romelu Lukaku's two goals in the 4-2 win over Leicester, has a year left on his current deal.

"We offer him a new contract, and then there are two possibilities," he said. "One, he signs that contract. If he doesn't sign that contract then we need to sell the player. It's simple, it's not so difficult in my opinion."

The England international - born in Liverpool - has scored five goals and provided eight assists for Everton in all competitions this season. His team-mate Lukaku, who is the league's leading marksman with 23 goals, last month turned down a new five-year deal thought to be worth around £140,000 a week.

The Belgian, whose current contract expires in 2019, recently stated his desire to play in the Champions League next season.

The Toffees are currently seventh in the table - seven points shy of a Champions League spot.

"We try to keep the best players," the Dutch manager added. "We spoke a lot about Ross and Rom because they are really important. "Most of the time the quality of the players can be the difference between Everton and the opponent, and they played really well.

"We know Rom is a great finisher but Ross played really good football between the lines.

"I think he should have scored one but it is what you like to see - your best players performing like they showed, because they played outstanding, the whole team performance was outstanding."

BBC Sport: Crystal Palace Defeat Arsenal 3-0 In London Derby

Posted Image
Quote:

Crystal Palace continued their recent revival to boost their Premier League survival hopes and leave Arsenal struggling to maintain their run of top-four finishes under Arsene Wenger.

Palace led through Andros Townsend's close-range finish, doubling their lead when Yohan Cabaye's shot looped in. Luka Milivojevic clinched victory with a firm, low penalty as Palace moved six points clear of the relegation zone.

Sixth-placed Arsenal did not manage a shot on target in a poor second half.

Some travelling Gunners fans again called for manager Wenger, who has led Arsenal to top-four finishes in each of his previous 20 seasons at the helm, to leave the club.

The Frenchman's side are seven points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City with eight games remaining.

BBC Sport: Liverpool Return To 3rd With 2-1 Win Over West Brom

Posted Image
Quote:

Roberto Firmino scored a winner for the second weekend running as Liverpool beat West Brom to go third in the Premier League.

The Brazil striker headed in at the end of the first half after Lucas Leiva had glanced on James Milner's free-kick.

Milner volleyed over after half-time, and Simon Mignolet saved with his legs from Matt Phillips at the other end.

Late on, Alberto Moreno missed an empty goal from 40 yards after Albion keeper Ben Foster had gone up for a corner.

Despite that miss, Jurgen Klopp's side secured a fifth win in seven games, sending West Brom to a third straight defeat.

BBC Sport: United Shut Down Chelsea, Oepn Up Title Race

Posted Image
Quote:

Chelsea's lead at the top of the Premier League now stands at only four points and the title race is wide open again after they were well beaten by a resurgent Manchester United at Old Trafford.

United manager Jose Mourinho has suffered this season against the club where he was a three-time champion, losing 4-0 in the league at Chelsea and also going out of the FA Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese was not to be denied this time as Marcus Rashford, paired with Jesse Lingard up front while a jaded Zlatan Ibrahimovic was rested, finished coolly after seven minutes and Ander Herrera - detailed to do a brilliant man-marking job on Eden Hazard - saw his shot deflected in off Kurt Zouma four minutes after the break.

Zouma was a late replacement for Marcos Alonso, who pulled out in the warm-up, but Chelsea can offer no excuses here as they were second best throughout. Tottenham now trail them by four points with six games to go and have the superior goal difference.

NBC Sports: Gunners Keep Up Hopes For Top-4 Finish With 2-1 Win Over Boro
Quote:

Arsenal’s quest for a top-four finish has improved ever so slightly from where it stood two hours ago, though the Gunners’ performance in a 2-1 victory away to 19th-place Middlesbrough did very little to inspire confidence and relieve the pressure on Arsene Wenger.

After an opening 40 minutes which saw very little in terms of scoring chances for either side, Alexis Sanchez broke the scoreless deadlock with a stunning free kick from 23 yards out. Brad Guzan, who returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Jan. 2 (in PL play), couldn’t move as the Chilean’s dead-ball strike cleared the wall and dipped under the crossbar.

The lead was short-lived, though, as Boro pulled level through Alvaro Negredo in the 50th minute. Stewart Downing hit the perfect cross to the top of the six-yard box, Laurent Koscielny whiffed on his clearance attempt, and Negredo beat Petr Cech to make it 1-1.

Following Negredo’s equalizer, any semblance of discipline and game plan from either side went out the window. The pace of the game went through the roof as Arsenal chased three points in their bid to catch fourth-place Manchester City (who are now seven points ahead, having played one more game than Arsenal), as Boro sought the same in hopes of fighting off relegation.

Much like his manager, Mesut Ozil’s future remains very uncertain two months before the summer transfer carousel begins spinning once again. Monday offered Ozil a brief reprieve and the chance to play the role of hero (above video). Sanchez played a lofted ball into the box, which Aaron Ramsey chested down into the path of an unmarked Ozil, and the 28-year-old German international slammed his first-time effort past Guzan.

The victory sees Arsenal move past Everton (on goals scored) for sixth in the league table, while Boro remain six points off the pace of Hull City, who currently occupy 17th.

NBC Sports: Report - Southampton hoping for Sigurdsson, Jansson swoops

Posted Image
Quote:

Forget the past; Southampton looks ready to do more buying than selling this offseason.

Chairman Ralph Krueger has already said the club is not planning to sell in-demand center back Virgil Van Dijk, and Saints reportedly want to look to add talent at both ends of the pitch.

Two of those targets could hinge on Premier League status. Not for Saints, of course, but for Swansea City and promotion hopefuls Leeds United.

The bigger name of the pair is Gylfi Sigurdsson, the Icelandic playmaker who has more or less kept Swans afloat this season. Sigurdsson, 27, has nine goals and 11 assists in all competitions this season.

At the other end is Leeds’ Pontus Jansson, a year younger and a center back. The big Swede has 12 caps and is a product of Torino and Malmo.

Saints’ Europa League campaign ended shy of goals but Claude Puel‘s club progressed to the League Cup final and has steadied its Premier League ship to the tune of 40 points this season. Adding depth in the form of at least one guaranteed starter is a step back toward European contention.

BBC Sport: Spurs U-23 Coach Collapses ON Training Ground

Posted Image
Quote:

Former England and Aston Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu is in hospital after collapsing at Tottenham's training centre on Thursday.

The 44-year-old, who is Spurs' Under-23s coach, received medical treatment on site before being transferred to hospital by ambulance, the Premier League club confirmed. "Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to Ugo and his family," Tottenham added in a statement.

Ehiogu has been at Spurs since 2014.

He made over 200 appearances for Aston Villa between 1991 and 2000 and then spent seven years at Middlesbrough. He won the League Cup with Villa in 1996 and also with Middlesbrough in 2004.

Ehiogu, who was capped four times by England, also played for West Brom, Leeds, Rangers and Sheffield United before retiring in 2009.

BBC Sport: Zlatan & Rojo Injuries Worry United

Posted Image
Quote:

Manchester United top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic and defender Marcos Rojo suffered suspected knee injuries in the Europa League win over Anderlecht.

Ibrahimovic, 35, landed awkwardly when challenging for the ball, while Rojo, 27, was replaced on 23 minutes after colliding with a visiting player.

Boss Jose Mourinho said the early news on the injuries is "fairly negative". He added: "I want to wait but my feeling is not good for both. I want to wait and be optimistic but I am not."

Ibrahimovic, who has scored 28 goals this season since his free transfer from Paris St-Germain in the summer, is yet to agree an extension on his one-year United deal.

Rojo's injury means he joins fellow defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones on United's injury list.

Against Anderlecht, Daley Blind played the remainder of the game in place of the Argentine and may keep his place alongside centre-back Eric Bailly for Sunday's Premier league trip to Burnley (kick-off 14:15 BST).

NBC SPorts: Benteke Haunts Liverpool As Palace Win 2-1 At Anfield
Quote:

Crystal Palace stunned Liverpool at Anfield once again on Sunday as the Eagles fought back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 and added to their recent impressive wins against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Phillipe Coutinho gave Liverpool the lead with a stunning free kick but just before half time Christian Benteke made it 1-1 and then the former Liverpool striker headed home in the second half to give Palace a precious three points.

With the win the Eagles are on 38 points and move up to 12th place as they surge away from the relegation zone, while Liverpool remain on 66 points and can feel Manchester City and Manchester United breathing down their neck in the race for the top four.

NBC Sports: United Keep Top-4 Hopes Alive With 2-0 Win Over Burnley

An injury-hit Manchester United beat Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor on Sunday to keep their hopes of a top four finish well and truly alive.

First half goals from the excellent Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney did the damage as Jose Mourinho’s men go into Thursday’s Manchester derby against City just one point and one place behind their crosstown rivals.

With the win United move on to 63 points, while Burnley remain on 36 and are just five points above the relegation zone after another inept display in attack.
