BBC Sport: Spurs Win 2-0 In The Northeast

- Quote:
-
Tottenham made a winning start to the 2017-18 Premier League season as 10-man Newcastle endured a difficult return to the top flight.
The Magpies, promoted as winners of the Championship last term, had captain Jonjo Shelvey sent off early in the second half for standing on Dele Alli.
The Spurs attacker then put his side ahead with a close-range finish before Ben Davies finished off a neat move for Tottenham's second.
It was a harsh re-introduction to life back in the Premier League for Newcastle, who were relegated from the division at the end of the 2015-16 season.
Rafael Benitez's side did not really threaten Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal until late on, Christian Atsu forcing the goalkeeper into a low save and Ciaran Clark going close with a volley from 12 yards.
Instead, Spurs could have added to their lead as Harry Kane, last season's Premier League top scorer with 29 goals, struck the post in injury time. -Read more: http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40841359
BBC Sport: United Begin Campaign With 4-0 Thrashing Of West Ham

- Quote:
-
Romelu Lukaku announced his arrival at Old Trafford by scoring twice on his Premier League debut for Manchester United as they embarrassed West Ham.
Jose Mourinho's team were a constant threat against a poor Hammers side, offering excitement and encouragement to their supporters on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
Lukaku, a £75m summer signing from Everton, put the Red Devils ahead with a rising drive off the post after racing onto Marcus Rashford's pass.
The Belgium international doubled the lead after half-time, glancing in a header from Henrikh Mkhitaryan's inswinging free-kick.
United teenager Rashford curled against the inside of Joe Hart's left-hand post before substitute Anthony Martial ended the match as a contest with a slick finish.
There was still time for a fourth, however, as Paul Pogba curled in from distance.
The Hammers offered little going forward in a passive performance, although new signing Marko Arnautovic did flick a header onto the top of the home crossbar at 2-0.
The Red Devils have now lost only one of their 14 opening-day Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford, while West Ham's season began with a record 11th defeat. -Read more: http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40841358

Jese Rodriguez on loan at Stoke looks decent. He gave Arsenal a good old run around. Wonder how much PSG will want for him next season?

THe Guardian: Mooy Delivers Home Victory For PL Debutantes

- Quote:
-
Huddersfield remain in dreamland after their first top-flight home game in 45 years produced a second deserved victory of the season. The Terriers are now up there with Manchester United with two wins from two games and if they are not quite hurtling down the motorway at the same speed as José Mourinho’s side, six points and two clean sheets is an early return few in West Yorkshire will have been expecting.
Many in the north-east, on the other hand, will have been unsurprised at Newcastle United’s second defeat of the season. The visitors were 3-1 winners here last season, when both sides were in the Championship, but never produced enough going forward to suggest a repeat might be on the cards. Even when they went behind their commitment to attack was questionable, and unless Rafael Benítez can liven things up with a few quick signings this could be another long season on Tyneside.
In a game of few clear chances Newcastle arguably had better opportunities than Huddersfield, though they never summoned enough conviction to take them. Town were never in any danger of rivalling Manchester United’s goal difference, moreover, mainly because Newcastle were more composed and better organised than Crystal Palace, though the goal they did score was a thing of beauty. Aaron Mooy will score few better, indeed Frank Worthington, watching approvingly from the stands, would have been happy to claim such a matchwinner.
“It was a magic moment from Aaron,” David Wagner, the Huddersfield manager, said. “I was really pleased with the way we defended the lead, but scoring first is always going to be important against a team as hard to break down as Newcastle. -Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/aug/20/huddersfield-town-newcastle-united-premier-league-match-report
The Guardian: Alonso Brace Fires Chelsea To Wembley Win Over Spurs

- Quote:
-
It has taken a little longer than Chelsea would have liked but, finally, they have reminded everybody of the qualities that elevated them to the Premier League title last season. They played on Sunday as though affronted by the criticism that has engulfed them over the previous week. Their season has lift-off and, though it would be stretching the truth to say one result resolves all their issues, they were barely recognisable from the team that finished against Burnley looking in need of smelling salts.
Antonio Conte’s men have had to withstand an awful lot of scrutiny since capsizing against the team from Turf Moor. Their response was the kind of performance that should answer a lot of the questions about their character and powers of endurance. For a team apparently teetering on the brink of crisis, they looked an awful lot like the side that had left everyone in their wing-mirrors last season.
They had to do it the hard way, missing key personnel against the team that chased them harder than anyone to that title success. Yet the aberration against Burnley feels almost freakish given the story of this follow-up win and the strength of personality shown by a newly assembled and experimental side. Another team might have wilted after Michy Batshuayi, one of Chelsea’s second-half substitutes, had headed in the own-goal that provided Spurs with an 82nd-minute equaliser but not Chelsea. The decisive goal, Marcos Alonso’s second of the afternoon, was a personal ordeal for Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal but what does it say about Chelsea that they could recover from Batshuayi’s misfortune to conjure up a winner in the 88th minute?
The answer almost certainly is that nobody should entirely write off the idea of a successful title defence just yet. Chelsea had to withstand some long spells of pressure after Alonso’s elegant free-kick had given them a first-half lead and, totting up the number of chances for Harry Kane alone, it was difficult even to keep count of the number of occasions when last season’s golden-boot winner let fly from all sorts of distances and angles. Kane hit the post with one first-half effort and there were other times when Chelsea were grateful to Thibaut Courtois’ goalkeeping. They defended with great resilience, in complete contrast to that 3-2 defeat on the opening weekend, and in the process they made it a demoralising way for Mauricio Pochettino’s team to begin their tenancy of Wembley. -Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/aug/20/tottenham-hotspur-chelsea-premier-league-match-report

NBC Sports: Manchester City Spoil Rooney's 200th PL Goal With 1-1 Draw
- Quote:
-
Wayne Rooney scored his 200th career Premier League goal, but Everton could not hold on to beat 10-man Man City in a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Monday. Raheem Sterling scored a deserved equalizer for Man City in the draw as both the Toffees and Citizens scooped up their fourth points of the season.
The Toffees went down to 10 men late, as Morgan Schneiderlin joined Kyle Walker in earning a rather soft sending-off.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin dragged a long shot across goal for Everton’s first real chance, while Kevin De Bruyne‘s deflected free kick was collected by Jordan Pickford as Man City tempted goal.
A long feeling-out period followed, but the match sprang to life when Pickford parried a Nicolas Otamendi chance to Sergio Aguero. The striker’s popped header was cleared off the line by Phil Jagielka.
Aguero wasted a gorgeous pass from De Bruyne with superfluous touches in the 33rd minute. The Argentine made up for it with a inch-perfect pass that David Silva cranked off the left post a minute later.
That’s when Everton scored, with Calvert-Lewin squaring for Rooney’s clinical finish through the legs of Ederson.
Gabriel Jesus chested an Aguero trap into shooting position, but Pickford collected the shot.
Kyle Walker took two yellow cards in four minutes to earn a red card from Bobby Madley, and City was down a goal and two men. The second was especially questionable.
Man City had the better of the early second half play, with Morgan Schneiderlin blocking a De Bruyne free kick and Jagielka racing out to stop the rebound.
That’s when Ronald Koeman readied new Everton signing Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Ederson made an outstanding 80-yard pass to a streaking Aguero, and Man City set up a play that ended with Bernardo Silva bouncing a shot wide of the Everton goal.
Pickford made another strong save when Danilo stepped into the right of the 18 with about 15 minutes to play. An Everton free kick saw Ederson collect a Rooney header moments later.
Sterling gave City its equalizer when Mason Holgate was occupied with David Silva and headed his clearance to the top of the 18 for a near point blank finish.
Schneiderlin made it 10 men a piece in the 88th minute when he collected his second yellow card.

The Guardian: Wood Strike Gives Burnley 1-0 Win Over Hapless Palace

- Quote:
-
A manager on the brink rarely speaks optimistically of the future but Crystal Palace hired Frank de Boer to be different. He responded to what may yet prove his last game in charge by casting his thoughts forward. A man who displayed great on-field eloquence in his playing days, courtesy of his wonderful left foot, showed another kind in a reaction to a fourth consecutive league defeat. The result seemed to render his own position more precarious. He insisted the display did not.
“I am not disappointed about the performance and it gives me a lot of hope for the future,” the Dutchman insisted, though it remains a moot point if his own is at Selhurst Park. A manager who has failed to beat Huddersfield, Liverpool, Swansea and now Burnley is in a private battle with himself. He lasted 85 days at Internazionale. He is up to 76 at Palace now.
De Boer’s afternoon at Turf Moor was bookended by displays of schadenfreude, taunts that he would be “sacked in the morning” following both Burnley’s third-minute winner and the final whistle. If so, the newly-hired sporting director, Dougie Freedman, would step in while they looked for an 11th permanent manager since 2010. De Boer himself shrugged off suggestions he had been given an ultimatum: win at Burnley or else. His June appointment was described by the chairman Steve Parish as an “amazing milestone”. He is charged with determining if the Dutchman, four league games into a three-year contract, is now a millstone.
“They have to decide,” De Boer said. “When I’m still the manager of Palace, I will give 100%. I just focus on what I can do. We are still with the project and we know where we come from and what we want to achieve. I’m convinced we are going to achieve it.” He was recruited to implement change and it is undeniable he has had an impact. The Eagles have made their worst start to a season for 92 years and stand alone among the 92 Premier and Football League clubs: everyone else has mustered at least one league goal.
“The only thing we didn’t do was score,” the former Ajax manager rued, his irritation increased by the knowledge Palace had furnished Burnley with the decider. The London club have reached a statistical low in his tenure, but other numbers offered him encouragement: they had 23 attempts at goal. Burnley had four.
“I will sign for this every game if we create that amount of chances against any opponent,” De Boer said. “This is what I want to see from any team I manage. We played with courage. That gives me a lot of hope. It was quite dynamic.” -Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/sep/10/burnley-crystal-palace-premier-league-match-report
The Guardian: Lascelles Header Lifts Newcastle To Vital Early Away Win

- Quote:
-
It has not been an easy few days for Rafael Benítez, who underwent surgery last week in relation to an infection following a hernia operation, but this result and performance will have done the Newcastle United manager’s recovery no harm whatsoever. Watching from his home on the Wirral, Benítez was able to enjoy the sight of Jamaal Lascelles scoring the only goal of the game to give Newcastle back-to-back Premier League wins and, in the process, pull the plug on the feelgood factor that had swept through Swansea thanks to transfer deadline day.
Renato Sanches was the headline act in that respect yet the 20-year-old’s debut proved to be something of an anti-climax. Maybe that was always going to be the case because of the level of expectation that accompanied the news that he had moved to the Liberty Stadium on a season-long loan deal from Bayern Munich. A surprise inclusion from the start, Sanches looked off the pace and it was no real surprise when he was withdrawn after 69 minutes.
Not that this defeat should be pinned on him for one moment. Swansea were desperately poor in so many areas and the goal they conceded to lose the game, when Lascelles was granted the freedom of the Swansea penalty area to score with a powerful header, summed up the home team’s afternoon. They were toothless up front, desperately short of creativity and guile in midfield and gave the ball away on far too many occasions. -Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/sep/10/swansea-city-newcastle-united-premier-league-match-report

NBC Sports: Late Pressure Gives West Ham First Victory Of 17-18 Campaign
- Quote:
-
West Ham United needed something positive on Monday after the way the club started the 2017/18 Premier League season, and the Hammers delivered at home.
The Hammers picked up a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town at the London Stadium, snapping the team’s three-match winless run to start the season. Meanwhile, the defeat for Huddersfield is the club’s first since joining the PL. David Wagner‘s side sits on nine points through its first four matches.
The Hammers midfielder broke the deadlock with 18 minutes remaining after a wicked deflection from Zanka sent Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lössl the wrong way.
Then, second-half substitute Andre Ayew doubled the West Ham lead five minutes later to seal the match for the hosts.
Philip Billing provided the Terriers with the squad’s first real chance of the match in the 53rd minute, when the midfielder unleashed an effort from distance that required Joe Hart to get down to make the save.
The Hammers provided much of the early pressure, and nearly found a breakthrough on 13 minutes when Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez blasted a close-range shot off the crossbar.
Jonas Lössl kept the game scoreless prior to the half-hour mark after James Collins‘ header safely rolled into the Huddersfield goalkeeper’s arms in the 26th minute.
The Terriers struggled to mount any significant build up in the attack as West Ham carried out most of the pressure in the Huddersfield half during the opening stanza.

NBC Sports: How Will Manchester United Deal With Pogba's Injury?

- Quote:
-
12 months ago Manchester United would have coped just fine when losing Paul Pogba. Now, not so much.
Pogba, 24, went off injured just 19 minutes into United’s 3-0 UEFA Champions League win over FC Basel on Tuesday night at Old Trafford and the Frenchman is expected to be out for at least a few weeks with a hamstring injury.
Such has been Pogba’s importance to United so far this season, Jose Mourinho handed him the captains armband for their return to the Champions League. On the pitch Pogba has provided driving runs from midfield, scoring two goals and adding two assists as his offensive output has been cranked up several notches compared to last season.
Who will replace him in United’s lineup on Sunday against Everton?
Marouane Fellaini is the main contender to slot right in for Pogba after his Man of the Match display against Basel in midweek where he scored and set up the third with a commanding display in central midfield. In many ways the role Pogba has been playing is perfect for Fellaini.
The Belgian had been restricted to a deeper central midfield role under David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and even Mourinho last season, but if the Portuguese coach wants to lessen the impact of Pogba’s loss, Fellaini should slot in to start against his former club on Sunday. Mourinho continues to call Fellaini one of his “most important” players and the aggressive midfielder seems to have fed off that confidence given to him by his boss.
However, Mourinho does have options with both Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick waiting in the wings to slot in alongside Nemanja Matic against Everton.
Both would be a safer, more defensive option than Fellaini and given the Belgian midfielder facing his former club, tempers could flare in midfield just like they did last season at Goodison Park when he gave away a penalty kick moments after coming on as a substitute.
Fellaini will probably start but with Everton set to pack the midfield with playmakers like Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson and maybe Davy Klaassen, having an extra defensive midfielder may be the smarter move for Mourinho.
With games against Burton Albion in the League Cup, a Premier League clash at Southampton and then a trip to CSKA Moscow in the UCL, Fellaini is likely to have a bigger impact against those teams. Yet with Mourinho’s love for the Belgian midfielder very well, don’t be surprised to see Carrick and Herrera both on the bench this Sunday at Old Trafford.

NBC Sports: Bournemouth Comes Back To Defeat Brighton 2-1

- Quote:
-
Jermain Defoe had done little through the first 70 minutes, and it seems that’s when he’s most dangerous. The former England international struck with 15 minutes to go, giving the Cherries their first win and first points of the 2017/18 Premier League season.
There was an opening 45 minutes. It was so awful that these two sentences will be all we have to describe it.
Don’t believe us? Fine, here’s one more sentence: the first half featured one shot on target, one corner, zero serious chances on goal, zero offside calls, seven fouls, and zero Brighton touches in the Bournemouth penalty area.
May we continue?
Moving on to the second half, things were just as cagey, but Brighton began to attack with more venom. Shane Duffy had a header cleared off the line 51 minutes in. That would prove prophetic, as the visitors scored minutes later. A wonderful through-ball down the left sprung Pascal Gross, and he delivered a pinpoint cross to the head of Solly March who headed in from point-blank range.
The game opened up ,and Bournemouth responded, leveling things up 10 minutes later. Jordon Ibe produced a wonderful back-heel assist to put Andrew Surman on the ball, and the 31-year-old South African skipped past a defender and delivered the ball into the far corner of the net.
The Cherries nearly got another as Ibe collected a poor Brighton clearance at the top of the box and rifled on net, with the shot destined for the far corner but blocked by a sliding Lewis Dunk. During that chance, Gross was injured under a challenge from Nathan Ake and required a physio visit. That forced him off momentarily, and soon after the restart before Gross could come back on, the Cherries struck with the temporary advantage.
Ibe again played creator as he stayed on the ball under heavy contact, feeding Defoe with an outside-foot pass. The 34-year-old took his chance, burying the shot past Maty Ryan for a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute. The goal is his first of the season. That was it the rest of the way, as Brighton had little ability to push the attack to look for a late point.
The points for Bournemouth were massive, moving them out of 19th and even with Leicester City and West Ham. That leaves Crystal Palace as the only team without a point this season. Brighton remains in 14th with four points.
