BBC Sport: Arsenal End Fruitless Streak At Stamford Bridge

Posted Image
Quote:

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his side produced a "great response" to their thrashing at Liverpool as they earned a first point at Chelsea in six years. The Gunners had previously kept only one clean sheet in their past 18 league games at Stamford Bridge and, following the 4-0 loss at Anfield in their previous Premier League away game, this was a display which left Wenger satisfied.

"It was a solid performance with team discipline," Wenger told Match of the Day 2. "Everyone wanted to see how we responded to our last away league game and we did that in a positive way. We could have won but overall it was an intense, disciplined and battling game.

"We are not in a transfer period and on the day we played Liverpool that affected us. We are all human beings. If you play 55 games a season you can have a bad performance. We had a bad record recently here and they are strong at home. But we showed solidarity and that was very good. We didn't hide when we had the ball and this is a good basis to build on for future games."

The draw was a fully deserved reward for an excellent display that could even have brought victory against the Premier League champions, who finished with 10 men following the late dismissal of David Luiz for a high tackle on Sead Kolasinac. "I don't like to comment about the referee," said Chelsea manager Antonio Conte. "We have great respect for officials, but it is strange to finish a third game in a row against Arsenal with 10 men."

The point leaves Chelsea third in the table, three points behind Manchester City and Manchester United.

BBC Sport: Late Goal Flurry Ruins' Rooney's Return To Old Trafford

Posted Image
Quote:

Romelu Lukaku scored against his former club as Manchester United thrashed Everton to move joint top of the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney's return to Old Trafford ended in a dismal defeat - embossed by three late goals - which sent Everton into the bottom three. The Toffees have endured a dire start to the season and have not scored a goal in any of four successive defeats in all competitions.

Antonio Valencia smashed a shot past Jordan Pickford from 25 yards to put Jose Mourinho's side into an early lead which rarely came under threat.

Rooney, United's record goalscorer, had Everton's two best opportunities but once he left the pitch with nine minutes to go his former employers hit overdrive.

Lukaku found Henrikh Mkhitaryan to steer home before the Belgium striker bundled in the third himself at the far post, and substitute Anthony Martial added a stoppage-time penalty.

United and Manchester City have an identical record at the top after five Premier League games - wins, points, goals scored and goals conceded - with Pep Guardiola's team on top only alphabetically. If the two teams had identical records at the end of the season, there would be a play-off.

BBC Sport: Brighton Notch Second Straight League Win

Posted Image
Quote:

Brighton edged out Newcastle United to record their second successive home Premier League victory.

The hosts scored when Pascal Gross' free-kick was headed back across goal by Dale Stephens and Tomer Hemed hooked the ball in from six yards out.

Newcastle, who had won their past three league matches, had chances, but Mikel Merino's volley was pushed wide by Mat Ryan, Joselu twice missed when well placed, and substitute Jonjo Shelvey hit a post direct from a corner.

Victory lifted the Seagulls to 13th in the table, while Newcastle dropped to ninth.

NBC Sports: Lacazette Brace Propels Gunners To Victory Over West Brom

Posted Image
Quote:

Arsenal’s early-season struggles appear to be behind them as Arsene Wenger and Co. kept up its fine form on Monday at the Emirates Stadium. Wenger’s side took down West Bromwich Albion, 2-0, in London behind a pair of goals from Alexandre Lacazette.

Lacazette continued his fine scoring form on Monday, scoring his third and fourth goals at the Emirates for the Gunners. The Frenchman found the back of the net in the 18th minute following Alexis Sanchez’s free kick, which was originally saved by West Brom keeper Ben Foster.

The Gunners then doubled their lead in the 67th minute in controversial fashion when Lacazette converted from the penalty spot.

The club’s big-money summer signing stepped up for the spot kick after Aaron Ramsey went down in the West Brom penalty area moments earlier. Baggies defender Allan Nyom was called for the foul as he shouldered Ramsey off the ball near the end line.

The Frenchman found the back of the net in the 18th minute following Alexis Sanchez’s free kick, which was originally saved by West Brom keeper Ben Foster.

Lacazette came so close to a second for the home side in the 51st minute after a brilliant build up down the left wing by Sead Kolasinac.

West Brom was furious not to have a penalty after nine minutes when it appeared that Shkodran Mustafi took down a surging Jay Rodriguez inside the Arsenal area. Rodriguez did himself no favors though after getting back up and carrying on with his run following the challenge from the Arsenal defender. Unfortunately for Rodriguez, his attempt went off the post after Petr Cech got a small touch to his shot.

Rodriguez was the biggest threat for West Brom on the day, with the Baggies attacker coming close to a breakthrough on several occasions.

The win for Arsenal brings the club up to seventh place in the PL, while West Brom drops one spot to 11th.

NBC Sports: Watford's Chalobah To Be Out For Months

Posted Image
Quote:

One of Marco Silva‘s prime captures this summer was Nathaniel Chalobah from Chelsea, and the youngster is going to miss some serious time with a knee injury. The Daily Mail calls it a broken patella — ouch! — and Watford said Chalobah suffered the injury in training.

Chalobah, 22, has started all five Premier League matches for Watford this season, and has been one of the better performers in the Hornets’ surprising start.

He could be out until 2018, though Watford’s performance director Gavin Benjafield is hopeful that’s not the case, via The London Evening Standard: “Whilst we can’t put an exact timeline on his recovery, we are expecting to see him re-integrating into the squad well before the New Year.”

Watford does have depth at center mid, with its corps including Etienne Capoue, Will Hughes, Tom Cleverley, Abdoulaye Doucoure, and Ben Watson. Still, it’s a tall order replacing Chalobah and we’ll get our first look when Watford hits the Hawthorns to face West Brom on Saturday.

NBC Sports: Everton Draw "Feels Like A Defeat", Says Brighton Manager
Quote:

Chris Hughton is a very smart manager, one who knows the right buttons to push with his club.

On top of leading two clubs to Premier League promotion, Hughton has a knack for finding the cross-section of the right verdict on matches, what the fans what to hear, and what his players need to hear.

Brighton may have deserved better than a point against visiting Everton on Sunday, and Bruno’s conceded penalty overshadowed a fine performance from the Gulls. And Hughton would’ve been right to salute his promoted side’s point against a Premier League mainstay, even if said mainstay is struggling under manager Ronald Koeman...

BBC Sport: West Brom, Leicester City Play To 1-1 Draw

Posted Image
Quote:

Leicester City boss Craig Shakespeare said giving Riyad Mahrez a "kick up the backside" had paid off as the Algerian's first goal of the season rescued a point against West Bromwich Albion.

Nacer Chadli's sublime free-kick - West Brom's only shot on target - looked set to earn the Baggies a hard-earned win in a game short on quality.

But Mahrez, who had wasted a great chance when the game was goalless, marked his return to the side after being dropped against Bournemouth by tucking home 10 minutes from time.

"I left him out against Bournemouth, gave him a kick up the backside, and he was excellent in training," said Shakespeare, whose side remain in the relegation zone and without a win in six Premier League games. "You want the response and the right response."

Mahrez's goal is the third time this season West Brom have conceded an equaliser in the final 15 minutes of a league match.

"When we scored, I felt we became more comfortable but every game in this league is tough," said Baggies boss Tony Pulis. "Unless you are right on it you are not going to get what you deserve."

The last time Leicester went six league matches without a victory, Claudio Ranieri was sacked as manager.

BBC Sport: Brighton Dominant In 3-0 WIn Over West Ham

Posted Image
Quote:

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic says he is "not worried" but is "realistic" about his future after the Hammers lost 3-0 to Brighton at London Stadium. The home fans booed throughout and thousands left the ground early following Brighton's third goal, which sealed the visitors' first away win of the season.

West Ham slipped to 17th in the table and will drop into the relegation zone if Leicester beat Swansea on Saturday.

"The speculation was here before," said Bilic. "I'm manager of the team. I don't want to hide behind anything. It's my responsibility and it's up to the board."

Brighton took the lead after 10 minutes when the unmarked Glenn Murray headed in Pascal Gross' free-kick. Moments before the break Jose Izquierdo curled past Joe Hart from distance, despite the England goalkeeper getting a strong hand to the ball.

Murray added his second from the penalty spot in the 75th minute after he was fouled by Pablo Zabaleta.

Although they dominated possession, West Ham had only two shots on target, long-range efforts from Pedro Obiang and Manuel Lanzini.

Chris Hughton's Brighton, who were brilliant throughout, climbed to 10th in the table.

BBC Sport: Jose Mourinho - Man Utd attitude at Huddersfield was worse than a friendly

Posted Image
Quote:

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said their attitude in the 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield was worse than a friendly match.

Huddersfield took a two-goal lead in the first half, before Marcus Rashford's late consolation goal. United's first loss of the season leaves them five points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.

"When you lose a match because of attitude, that is really bad," said former Chelsea boss Mourinho.

United had kept seven clean sheets in their previous eight league games, but mistakes from Juan Mata and Victor Lindelof in the space of five first-half minutes were punished with goals by Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre.

Despite almost 80% possession, United managed just three shots on target.

"I don't even remember a friendly match when our attitude was so poor," said Mourinho. "We could have a second goal and a draw but it would have been undeserved. (If) I was a Manchester United supporter, I would be really disappointed because you can accept losing because the opponent had more quality, but not because the opponent had more attitude."
