BBC Sport: Murray Header Allows Brighton To Split Points With Southampton

Posted Image
Quote:

Glenn Murray scored his third goal in two games as Brighton recovered from going a goal behind to earn a draw against Southampton.

The Saints took the lead after only seven minutes when Steven Davis reacted quickest to the loose ball, after James Ward-Prowse's excellent free-kick came off the angle of post and bar.

Defender Shane Duffy came close to equalising for the Seagulls with a header before the home side drew level on 52 minutes, when 34-year-old Murray nodded in from Pascal Gross' cross.

Bar the two goals, neither goalkeeper was severely tested. Saints' midfielder Dusan Tadic saw his strike deflected wide and striker Manolo Gabbiadini was denied by a sliding block from defender Lewis Dunk.

The point moves Southampton to ninth in the Premier League table with 13 points, and Brighton go up one place to 11th with 12 points.

BBC Sport: Leicester Defeat Hapless Everton 2-0 At The King Power

New Leicester manager Claude Puel said that victory over managerless Everton was the "perfect" way to begin his spell in charge.

The former Southampton boss, appointed on Wednesday to replace the sacked Craig Shakespeare, saw Jamie Vardy finish a sweeping counter-attack and Demarai Gray benefit from a Jonjoe Kenny slice into his own net.

"I saw a team in Leicester with a good attitude, a good structure and a lot of solidarity," said the Frenchman, whose team climbed to 11th in the Premier League.

"I was impressed with my players. I hope it's just the beginning of something."

Everton, under caretaker David Unsworth after Ronald Koeman's sacking on Monday, remain in the bottom three.

They were largely restricted to long-range efforts, but probably should have had a penalty when Christian Fuchs brought down Aaron Lennon soon after Leicester's second goal.

Though Everton dominated the second half, a lack of incision was indicative of a team that has scored only seven league goals this season and are winless in seven games in all competitions.

Leicester, meanwhile, have staged a turnaround since a run of six league games without a win cost Shakespeare his job. The 2015-16 Premier League champions have now won three in a row in the top flight and Carabao Cup - two under caretaker boss Michael Appleton and this maiden success for Puel.

The Guardian: Burnley Marks Five Years With Manager Dyche By Winning 1-0 Over Newcastle

Posted Image
Quote:

Sean Dyche’s fifth-anniversary present was a win Burnley barely deserved but one that takes them to the fringe of the European positions. Jeff Hendrick’s late goal secured the points against a cautiously passive Newcastle side on a night when entertainment was limited and both sides disappointed. Burnley leapfrogged them to climb to seventh place – a win for Rafa Benítez’s side would have taken them to sixth above Liverpool – yet both played as if embarrassed about how high they are in the table.

Frankly it was dull. These are not two of the most free-scoring or attack-minded of Premier League teams and what they are both doing in the top half of the table is a mystery that does not reflect particularly well on all the teams below them. Perhaps, as is beginning to be suspected, there is simply not that much quality in the top flight beyond the highest half dozen.

“When you’re us you can’t go out and play fantastic football every week, you have to fight for your wins,” Dyche said, not unreasonably. “I knew this game would be tight. Newcastle are very organised under Rafa and we had to work hard to break them down. It’s very difficult when your opponents stay as resolute as Newcastle did.”

Newcastle did not quite manage to stay resolute enough, however. “We made one mistake, we were caught out of position, and we lost the match,” Benítez said. “We didn’t do what we had to do in defence and maybe we have to be a little bit better in attack.”

.....granted, I've heard of some novel ways to slow Manchester United down but this is a first....

(NBC Sports) Just a few days prior to Manchester United’s giant clash with defending Premier League champions Chelsea, Jose Mourinho is being forced to adapt his preparation tactics.

The Portuguese boss has reportedly been called to Spain to appear in front of a judge in Pozuelo de Alarcon as charges of tax fraud continue to swirl around Mourinho from his days as manager at Real Madrid. The charges state that Mourinho defrauded the Spanish government of over $3.8 million while managing Los Blancos. The time in question is a two-year span during 2011 and 2012.

As a result of Mourinho’s hearing, which is set for Friday morning in Spanish capital of Madrid, ESPN FC reports that United could train later in the day ahead of their trip to Stamford Bridge.

The match will take place on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET, as Mourinho meets up against his former club once again.

NBC Sports: Watford Spoils Moyes' West Ham Managerial Debut
Quote:

Will Hughes and Richarlison scored on either side of half time to lift Watford to a 2-0 win over visiting West Ham on Sunday at Vicarage Road.

It’s a debut loss for new Irons boss David Moyes, whose club remains in the Premier League’s 18th position.

Watford rises to eighth, with 18 points.

West Ham looked bright and industrious in the first 10 minutes, yet Watford had a lead in the 11th.

Andre Gray whiffed on a shot, and the ball bobbled to Hughes for an advantageous finish.

Watford was on the back foot for much of the latter stages in the first half. A slick one-touch endeavor ended with Heurelho Gomes getting a piece of Cheikhou Kouyate‘s low shot.

Gomes then twice denied Marko Arnautovic, the first an incredible leg save.

Kouyate and Abdoulaye Doucoure traded chances early in the second half, with neither on frame.

Andre Gray and Doucoure worked a fine 58th minute chance, with Winston Reid‘s slight deflection stopping Gray from curling inside the far post. Joe Hart made a terrific save as Watford then pressed off the ensuing corner kick.

Richarlison put it away, essentially, with a 64th minute goal. Hughes handled the ball in the run-up, but the Brazilian’s finish was electrifying. It was Richarlison’s fifth PL goal of the season, matching his half-season total with Fluminese.

NBC Sports: West Ham 1-1 Leicester City - Hammers Marginally Improved
Quote:

The tangible takeaway was small — a single point — but the overall sentiment appeared my larger for West Ham United, as David Moyes‘ side came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw with Leicester City at the London Stadium on Friday.

It didn’t take long for the Hammers’ boo birds to re-emerge and for the spotlight to return squarely — and blisteringly hotly — onto the club’s (already, after two games) beleaguered manager. Jamie Vardy broke down the left side of the penalty area, cut a left-footed cross back toward the penalty spot, and Marc Albrighton arrived at the right time to redirect the ball through traffic with an outstretched right foot.

Kasper Schmichael was forced to make one spectacular save during the first half, in the 25th minute. Manuel Lanzini‘s free kick floated to Angelo Ogbonna at the back post, where the Italian headed downward and inside the post. Schmichael quickly scrambled across the face of goal and pushed the ball away with two hands.

Then, the strangest event occurred: for just the sixth time in 25 games since relocation in the summer of 2016, West Ham scored a first-half goal — with only seconds to spare. Again, it was a set piece from which the Hammers posed their greatest threat. Lanzini lofted another beautiful ball to the top of Schmichael’s six-yard box, this time from a corner kick, where Cheikhou Kouyate rose above the rest and headed the ball off the back of Danny Simpson and into the back of the net.

With the two sides seemingly pleased to split the points, the second half featured very little notable action — in terms of scoring chances, that is.

Riyad Mahrez, who spent all summer trying to engineer a move away from Leicester, was subbed out by manager Claude Puel in the 70th minute. The Algerian international and 2015-16 Player of the Year appeared to be far from pleased, as he and Puel made no eye contact nor gave any acknowledgement of one another when Mahrez walked past Puel and made his way to the bench. Rekindled rumors are right around the corner.

The draw leaves West Ham (10 points), who are now six games without a win, 18th in the league table, now level on points with West Bromwich Albion who currently sit just outside the relegation zone. Leicester (14 points), meanwhile, leapfrogged Newcastle United for 11th.

....somewhere the league leaders had to be laughing at Saturday's results across the grounds....

(SA) Neither Liverpool or Chelsea could make up any ground as goals by Mo Salah and Willian canceled the other out, resulting in a 1-1 draw at Anfield
(SA) Does Newcastle even know what a striker is yet? Apparently not as Watford plummeled them 3-0 up in the Northeast
(SA) The winner of today's borefest? Swansea-Bournemouth's 0-0 stinker out in South Wales
(SA) Mix a high-volley Ashley Young shot with a Lewis Dunk own-goal deflection and you get a 1-0 Manchester United win vs. Brighton over at Old Trafford
(SA) After going w/out points in their first seven games, Crystal Palace now have eight on the trot, adding today's 2-1 win over Stoke City out at Selhurst Park to the mix and
(SA) Spurs couldn't gain ground on the Citizens as they barely escaped with a 1-1 draw vs. relegation-threated West Bromwich Albion

BBC Sport: Pardew - West Brom's Vacant Managerial Role "Is An Attractive Job"

Posted Image
Quote:

Alan Pardew said the West Brom manager's job is "attractive" after confirming he has held talks about taking over at the Premier League club. The 56-year-old is favourite to replace Tony Pulis, who was sacked on Monday after two victories in 21 games.

Ex-West Ham boss Slaven Bilic rejected the chance to discuss the role, and Gary Megson is in temporary charge.

"It's a club who have a really good set of players. It's a good opportunity," said Pardew. "Maybe they should be doing slightly better than they are. Looking at them and the depth of the squad, I think it's definitely got improvement in there," he told Sky Sports.

"I've had discussions with them. Obviously it's an attractive job, so we'll see where it goes."

Megson led the Baggies in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham on Saturday, a result that leaves the club 17th in the Premier League.

Ex-Crystal Palace manager Pardew, a former team-mate of West Brom technical director Nick Hammond, has been out of the game since being sacked by Palace in December 2016. He has previously managed in the Premier League at West Ham, Charlton and Newcastle.

BBC Sport: Sam Allardyce Considered Favorite For Everton Job

Posted Image
Quote:

Sam Allardyce is the leading contender for the Everton manager's job.

The club's search for a new manager has taken on fresh urgency after Sunday's 4-1 defeat at Southampton.

Allardyce was an early candidate to succeed Ronald Koeman, who was sacked on 23 October, but publicly withdrew after Everton delayed making an offer. Everton, whose pursuit of Watford's Marco Silva has reached a dead end, have lost five out of seven games since Koeman left.

Allardyce, 63, has been out of football since leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season. He saved Palace from relegation, having left the England job in September 2016 after just one match in charge.

Dutchman Koeman was sacked by Everton after the club slipped to 18th in the Premier League following a 5-2 home defeat by Arsenal.

David Unsworth - the club's Under-23s manager, who had two spells at Goodison Park as a defender - has been in caretaker-charge since then. He has lifted Everton to 16th, collecting four points from his four league matches.

The need for major shareholder Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright to appoint a manager has become more desperate after a 5-1 humiliation at home to Atalanta in the Europa League on Thursday followed by the thrashing at St Mary's.

Everton spent more than £140m in the summer but failed to replace top scorer Romelu Lukaku after his move to Manchester United. They are two points above the relegation places and third-from-bottom West Ham United, who they face at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
