NBC Sports: Manchester City Survives Late Newcastle Charge, Continues Winning Ways
Quote:

Raheem Sterling‘s 13th goal of the Premier League season lifted Manchester City to a 1-0 win over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Wednesday. Man City improves its table lead to 15 points with the win, while Newcastle remains 15th with 18 points.

City hadn’t been involved in a 1-0 match inside of Premier League play since a Sept. 30 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Newcastle hosts Brighton on Saturday, while City is off to Crystal Palace a day later.

Newcastle’s plan to find any unlikely way past Ederson began off the opening kick, as Jonjo Shelvey tested the Brazilian from midfield.

City held possession, to no one’s surprise, as St. James’ Park was good value for volume despite its long odds.

An adventurous diagonal ball from Fernandinho to the back post saw Sergio Aguero flub a shot off the outside of the goal. Kevin De Bruyne blazed over goal from the chalk of the arc as City crept closer to an opener. Moments later, Vincent Kompany was removed from the match with another injury, making way for Fernandinho’s move to center back and the introduction of Gabriel Jesus up top.

A picture perfect free kick from De Bruyne was nodded on frame by Aguero, and Elliot made a sensational reaction save to keep it scoreless. Aguero then tore into a 30th minute shot from 25 yards and just clipped the outside of the goal post.

Man City went ahead through Sterling, who got just enough of his left foot on a De Bruyne pass to fool Elliot.

Newcastle almost countered its way to an equalizer, as Kyle Walker fell attempting to track DeAndre Yedlin‘s cross. Rolando Aarons tried to sail a ball into the far post, but Nicolas Otamendi cleared the effort off the line. That wasn’t the end of the hosts’ pressure, and the Magpies saw a pair of corners defended by City. A lightning counter from City ended with a corner collected by Newcastle’s Elliot.

Sterling danced through Yedlin and Jacob Murphy to poke a cross to Aguero, who couldn’t reach the offering. Elliot stopped a tepid Ilkay Gundogan shot in the 54th after the German stripped Mohamed Diame. Aguero had it 2-0 when De Bruyne’s whip off the post zipped onto his path, but the Argentine was offside.

Sterling chopped down Jacob Murphy at the other end to give Newcastle a rare chance at danger, but Ederson ended any chance at a scare.

Dwight Gayle thought he’d earned a penalty kick, though most others didn’t, when he leapt through Danilo inside the box with 15 minutes to play.

Newcastle nearly tied it late when substitute Christian Atsu‘s cross was headed wide of the frame by Gayle.

NBC Sports: Sanchez Brace Helps Arsenal Hold Off Palace 3-2
Quote:

For a time it looked like the hosts would be able to pull out at least a point, but then it was all snatched away by Alexis Sanchez and Co. at Selhurst Park.

Arsenal took home three points on Thursday after picking up a 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace, behind a pair of second-half goals from Sanchez. The Chilean international scored twice in a span of four minutes to restore the Gunners advantage, after Palace had done superbly to level the match early in the second stanza.

Jack Wilshere‘s splendid ball from his own half of the field into the path of Sanchez sealed the match for the Gunners in the 66th minute, just after the Chilean had blasted the ball past Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni. The Gunners were forced to hold on in the final few minutes though, after James Tompkins narrowed the scoreline to 3-2 in the 89th minute.

It took less than five minutes after the halftime break for the Eagles to get back into the match though, when Andros Townsend finished off a delightful ball from Wilfried Zaha.

Shkodran Mustafi gave the Gunners a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute after Alexandre Lacazette‘s powerful shot was pushed aside by Speroni.

Arsenal continued to mount the pressure after the Gunners scored their first goal, and Mesut Ozil nearly had a second four minutes later when the German tested Speroni again.

After a back-and-forth opening few minutes, Yohan Cabaye nearly gave the hosts the lead on 15 minutes when the Palace attacker blasted a shot just wide of Cech’s goal from 25 yards out.

Both sides will be back in action on Sunday when Palace plays host to league leaders Man City, while Arsenal travels to the Hawthorns to take on West Bromwich Albion.

NBC Sports: Manchester United Striker Carted Off With Possible Head Injury

Posted Image
Quote:

Romelu Lukaku was stretchered off the pitch with what looked like a nasty head injury just eight minutes into Manchester United’s clash with Southampton on Saturday.

Lukaku, 24, was placed onto a stretcher after many minutes of treatment from United’s medical staff and had an oxygen mask on as he was carried off the pitch.

The Belgian striker, United’s top scorer this season who had previously played in every single second of their Premier League campaign, was involved in an aerial collision with Southampton’s center back Wesley Hoedt. Lukaku did not get back off the ground after Hoedt’s head collided powerfully with the back of his head.

BT Sport in the UK are reporting that Lukaku was not taken to hospital but is being monitored closely in the United dressing room.

Marcus Rashford replaced Lukaku on the pitch as the Belgian forward had already headed just over the bar early on with the first big chance of the game.

BBC Sport: Manchester City's Winning Streak Ends With Draw Vs. Palace

Posted Image
Quote:

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola reiterated his belief his side will not go through the Premier League season unbeaten after their 18-game top-flight winning run was ended by a goalless draw at Crystal Palace.

City conceded an injury-time penalty but goalkeeper Ederson saved from Luka Milivojevic, prompting Match of the Day host Gary Lineker to say Guardiola's side have an "air of invincibility about them". The draw preserves their unbeaten record in the league this season and takes them 14 points clear at the top - the biggest gap between the leaders and the chasing pack at this stage of the season in top-flight history.

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal went through the 2003-04 Premier League season unbeaten, but Guardiola thinks City will not match that feat.

"I am not thinking to be unbeaten," said Guardiola. "That is not going to happen. Maybe Arsene is worried about that but I tell him many times that 2004 run is for him. Today is completely different to 2004. There are now more strong teams, a lot of competitions, a lot of games."

Guardiola left Selhurst Park with two injury concerns - striker Gabriel Jesus leaving the field in tears in the first half, and playmaker Kevin de Bruyne taken off on a stretcher after a heavy tackle from Jason Puncheon in the final minute. It leaves City with only one fit senior striker in Sergio Aguero, who came on for Jesus.

BBC Sport: Late Penalty Gives West Brom Draw Vs. Arsenal

Posted Image
Quote:

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes referee Mike Dean "did not see" the incident that led him to award a late penalty to West Brom in the Gunners' 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns.

The visitors were on course for three points after Alexis Sanchez's 83rd-minute free-kick beat Baggies goalkeeper Ben Foster via a big deflection off James McClean in the wall.

But, with a minute of normal time remaining, Calum Chambers was judged to have handled as Kieran Gibbs tried to nudge the ball past him in the area.

Jay Rodriguez fired the resulting spot-kick past Petr Cech to earn the struggling hosts a point.

Wenger said: "Many years ago [former Arsenal vice-chairman] David Dein and myself fought hard for referees to become professional and they do a good job, but don't work enough.

"We have a very difficult schedule and I believe we fought hard to win the game, but didn't because of a bad decision.

"[Dean] didn't see it. There was a player in front of him. That's why I questioned his decision, he didn't see it."

Match of the Day 2 pundits Shay Given and Leon Osman disagreed - saying Dean had a clear view - but both described the decision as "generous".

NBC Sports: London Rivals Thrill In 2-2 Draw
Quote:

Hector Bellerin‘s stoppage time goal was the final marker of a 2-2 thriller between Arsenal an Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Eden Hazard and Marcos Alonso scored and Thibaut Courtois was strong in goal as Chelsea came back to take a lead on Arsenal 2-1.

Jack Wilshere had put Arsenal deservedly ahead in the 63rd minute, but the match was only level for four minutes.

The draw means Chelsea stays third behind Manchester United, while Arsenal remains sixth. That’s a point behind North London Derby rivals Spurs, who play West Ham to finish the festive fixture season on Thursday.

There was heightened intensity at the Emirates, leading to some overcooked passes and stylish interventions, but goals looked likely four times in the first 30 minutes.

--Alvaro Morata ran onto an overcooked cross and had a 1v1 with Petr Cech, but screwed his effort wide of the net.
--Alexis Sanchez stepped onto a ball inside the 18 and forced Thibaut Courtois to push the ball off not one, but both goal posts.
--Eden Hazard danced through the Arsenal defense to set up ex-Gunners mid Cesc Fabregas, but the Spaniard blazed over the bar.
--Alexandre Lacazette turned neatly near the penalty spot off a Sanchez feed, but Courtois again got his paw on the ball from a horizontal perspective.

Granit Xhaka fouled Tiemoue Bakayoko on the edge of the Arsenal 18, opening the door for Marcos Alonso’s dangerous left peg. The Spanish defender’s effort wasn’t his best, though, as it ballooned over the bar to keep the match scoreless.

Another good-looking turn from Lacazette sent Gary Cahill to the moon and cued up an early second half chance for Arsenal, but Courtois made a wonderful leg save.

The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute through longtime Gunners midfielder Wilshere, who belted a deflected and loose ball into the roof of the goal.

Courtois returned to his game-saving ways, deterring a Lacazette shot moments later.

Hazard then drew and converted a penalty and had it level in the 67th minute, as Hector Bellerin kicked Hazard’s boot in a duel for a bouncing ball. 1-1.

Morata then bodied Chambers off a breakaway ball, but his chip failed to find the frame. That wouldn’t be the case for Alonso, who finished his sixth goal of the season off a hard low pass from substitute Davide Zappacosta. But Bellerin scored in stoppage time before Zappacosta ripped an effort off the cross bar at the other end!

BBC Sport: Stoke City Fire Manager Following FA Cup Defeat
Quote:

Mark Hughes has been sacked as manager of Stoke City, just hours after the club's FA Cup third-round exit at the hands of League Two Coventry City.

A run of five defeats in seven Premier League games also contributed to Hughes' departure and he leaves with the club in the relegation zone. Hughes, 54, had been in charge of the Potters for four and a half years.

Stoke, who play Manchester United on 15 January, say they will "look to appoint a new manager as soon as possible".

A section of Stoke fans called for him to leave and held up banners throughout the 2-1 defeat at the Ricoh Arena.

After the game - his 200th in all competitions as Stoke manager - Hughes said he did not think the defeat changed the situation regarding his future and said it "might be a blessing" for the rest of the season.

Hughes, a former Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and QPR boss, succeeded Tony Pulis at Stoke in May 2013 and was the fourth longest-serving manager at a Premier League club.

The Welshman guided Stoke to three straight ninth-placed finishes, dropping to 13th last season.

BBC Sport: Bournemouth Dent Arsenal's Top-4 Hopes 2-1 On The South Coast

Posted Image
Quote:

Manager Arsene Wenger said he would review Arsenal's defeat at Bournemouth in a "harsh way" as goals by Callum Wilson and Jordon Ibe dented the Gunners' pursuit of a top-four place. Wenger's men are now without a win in five games in all competitions, and five points adrift of fourth place in the Premier League, after Bournemouth came from behind to extend their unbeaten run to four games and move further away from the bottom three.

Defender Hector Bellerin had given the visitors - playing without forward Alexis Sanchez - the lead when he latched on to a defence-splitting Alex Iwobi pass to squeeze the ball past Asmir Begovic. But Wilson took advantage of Petr Cech's indecision as he got to Ryan Fraser's low cross before the Arsenal keeper and poked it past him.

The 25-year-old then turned provider, bringing down Lewis Cook's cross for Ibe to rifle home.

"We were 1-0 up and suddenly we lost two goals and we don't know where they came from," said Wenger. "It is very frustrating. Overall we have to look at it in a very objective and harsh way - we made mistakes we should not have made. The team that fights against relegation will fight and you cannot afford any concentration mistake. One-all was not good enough for us. We had to win the game. I think if you look again at the second goal - we made many mistakes and that is what we paid for."

Eddie Howe's side savoured a first ever Premier League victory over Arsenal, at the sixth attempt, the victory moving them up to 13th place and four points away from danger. But for Wenger, who was completing his three-game touchline ban for verbally abusing an official, it was further disappointment as speculation mounts that Sanchez's departure is imminent.

A strong first-half Gunners performance, in which 20-year-old Ainsley Maitland-Niles rattled the crossbar, was undone in less than five calamitous second-half minutes.

BBC Sport: Liverpool Ends City's Invincibles Run 4-3 At Anfield

Posted Image
Quote:

Manchester City lost a Premier League game for the first time this season as Liverpool edged a thrilling encounter with the league leaders at Anfield.

The Reds scored three times in a rousing eight-minute spell in the second half to go 4-1 up, then clung on after City scored twice in the last six minutes.

Jurgen Klopp's side - playing their first game since Philippe Coutinho's £142m move to Barcelona - deserved their victory as they ended City's hopes of going through the league season without losing, and extended their own unbeaten run to 18 games.

Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain's low drive gave Liverpool an early lead, but City were level before half-time through Leroy Sane, who beat Loris Karius at his near post following Joe Gomez's mistake.

The game turned decisively in two minutes either side of the hour mark, when poor defending by John Stones let in Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane - who had just hit the post - struck a stunning finish high past Ederson.

Ederson's poor clearance gifted Mohamed Salah a fourth, and despite their late wobble, Liverpool closed out the win to go third in the table.

While the Reds' top-four challenge goes from strength to strength, City can still reflect on a 15-point lead over Manchester United, who host Stoke on Monday.

NBC Sports: Man United Drops Stoke City In Clincal 3-0 Win
Quote:

Manchester United was clinical as they dispatched Stoke City with ease at Old Trafford 3-0 on Monday. Antonio Valencia started things less than 10 minutes in, while Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku were the men to see the scoreline out.

The Red Devils opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Valencia received the ball at the top of the box on a square pass from Paul Pogba, and he cut into the box and to his left to create space, and when the incoming defender over-committed, he belted a curler inside the far post, leaving Jack Butland with no chance. The goal is Valencia’s first since December 2nd, coming on his return to action from a hamstring injury suffered against West Brom in mid-December.

Xherdan Shaqiri tried an audacious overhead effort minutes later hoping to get Stoke City back on level terms, but his shot was weak and straight at David de Gea from a tight angle. Steven Ireland came inches from tying things back up on 21 minutes, but as he unleashed his effort from the penalty spot with space to shoot, he slipped on the wet surface and yanked it wide left.

After Ireland’s miss, Stoke became the more attacking team, and it put Manchester United on its heels for a period of time as they were sloppy in possession. They failed to capitalize, and by the 35-minute mark, the hosts were back on top, and profited.

In the 38th minute, Romelu Lukaku used his strength on the right edge to get the ball centrally for Pogba, who cut left for Anthony Martial. The 22-year-old hit the ball first-time, and ripped it into the top corner just past the fingertips of a diving Butland.

On the stroke of halftime Shaqiri forced an important save from David de Gea down to his left off a volley, but the Spaniard was there to keep the two-goal lead intact. In the second half, United had a few half-chances early on. Martial nearly had a second just before the hour mark, but Butland smothered the chance on the doorstep. Juan Mata pulled the trigger two minutes later and fired just wide of the far post, and then again rifled over soon after.

Lukaku put the game away with 18 minutes to go as he received the ball from Martial with his back to goal and turned past two defenders and slid the ball into the bottom corner for a 3-0 lead. The win puts Manchester United clear into second place, three points above Liverpool and twelve behind Manchester City, who lost for the first time this season last time out. Stoke City, meanwhile, will hand the reigns to Paul Lambert who was in attendance for today’s game, taking over for the fired Mark Hughes.

NBC Sports: Spurs & Saints Play To 1-1 Draw
Quote:

Harry Kane made amends for a Davinson Sanchez own goal as Tottenham Hotspur drew Southampton 1-1 at St. Mary’s on Sunday. Southampton is now winless in 11 Premier League matches, while Spurs are unbeaten in six.

Spurs entered the game with Christian Eriksen and Hugo Lloris out through sickness and several more not at 100 percent, and Sanchez was surely feeling ill when his sliding attempt to block a Ryan Bertrand cross beat his own keeper to the inside post.

It was 1-1 within moments, as Kane rose over Manolo Gabbiadini after losing mark Jack Stephens on a corner kick.

James Ward-Prowse was fortunate to avoid a card when he kicked out at Jan Vertonghen following a slide tackle from the Spurs center back.

Stephens just missed making up for his error when he zipped onto Ward-Prowse’s free kick but headed just wide of the far upper 90.

Mario Lemina forced Vorm into a save after a 41st minute set-up by Gabbiadini.

Ward-Prowse tried his luck from 25 yards to start the second half, but Vorm saw the ball the whole way into his arms.

Spurs grew into the second half, and Dele Alli lashed wide of the near post in the 65th minute. Vertonghen buzzed the tower with a left-footed shot five minutes later.

Would anything give as the match progressed, with Spurs inserting Erik Lamela and Saints opting for Sofiane Boufal and 17-year-old debutant Michael Obafemi?

Good work from Kane and Sissoko ended with an on-the-doorstep Lamela shooting off a Saints defender and out, poorly adjudged to be a goal kick.

Obafemi misjudged a chance to redirect a cross past Vorm in the 87th minute, and Cedric ventured a laser wide of the goal as Saints looked for a winner. Boufal was then blocked by Sanchez after taking a touch too much in the box.

Kane had late opportunity for Spurs, but dragged his shot or pass through the six without a receiver.
