Aston Villa have sacked manager Paul Lambert
.......here was the news of Lambert's sacking by Aston Villa...

(NBC ProSoccerTalk) Paul Lambert is out as Aston Villa’s manager. In a brief club statement on Wednesday, Villa confirmed that they had “parted company” with Lambert after the Midlands side dropped into the relegation zone on Tuesday following their fifth-straight Premier League defeat.

Lambert, 45, took charge of Villa in the summer of 2012 after guiding Norwich City to two-straight promotions to the Premier League and then solidifying the Canaries status as a top-flight team.

However after winning just 35 of his 115 games in charge, which included two-straight 15th placed finishes in the PL standings, Lambert has been dismissed by Villa’s American owner Randy Lerner after plenty of fan unrest which has seen supporters holding up “Lambert Out” banners during recent games.

Here’s the statement from Villa in full, as the Villains are managerless and in the bottom three with just 13 games to go in the 2014-15 season. Aston Villa Football Club has parted company this evening with manager Paul Lambert. First-team coach Scott Marshall and goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall will continue to prepare the squad for Sunday’s FA Cup tie with Leicester City at Villa Park.

The club would also like to place on record its thanks to Paul and take this opportunity to wish him every success in the future. The club will announce a new manager in due course. There will be no further comment from the club at this stage.

...well, we have a new manager at Villa Park:

(NBC ProSoccerTalk) He’s either never been given the proper chance to succeed or way out of his depth, and the correct answer will largely determine whether Aston Villa keeps its status as one of the few Premier League clubs to have never been relegated.

Tim Sherwood has signed a contract to lead Aston Villa through 2018, the club announced Saturday morning. This ought to be interesting. Outspoken and supremely confident in his abilities, Sherwood takes over a Villa club in 18th place via goal differential.

Sherwood won 14 of his 28 matches in charge of Tottenham last season, his first as a manager. Despite lobbying for the job, Spurs opted to hire Mauricio Pochettino. That left Sherwood as the man most likely to be named whenever a Premier League job opened up.

He inherits an absolute mess of a side that’s looked downright disinterested in recent weeks. Star striker Christian Benteke has looked like a passenger at times, and goals have been scarce for Villa. They’ve lost five-straight matches, though three-straight against Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal weren’t a recipe for success.

It’s an incredibly risky move for Villa. Sherwood has never been involved in a relegation fight as a player, and has limited experience running a club. Would I want my club to entrust its top-flight status to Sherwood? Nope, but that’s not an issue for me right now. How are you feeling, Villans?

...bad officiating doth have its' consequences....just ask Martin Atkinson:

(NBC ProSoccerTalk) Premier League referees Martin Atkinson and Kevin Friend are taking the weekend off. At least, that’s what they’ve been told.

After controversial games for both Atkinson and Friend last weekend, they won’t be in the middle for a PL game during Week 27. Instead the duo have been named as fourth officials for two games on Saturday after Atkinson came under fire for failing to send off Burnley’s Ashley Barnes and missing at least three other key moments in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.

As for Friend, he was in charge of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Southampton, in which there were numerous penalty box incidents that saw the referee and his assistant get plenty of flack from the home supporters at St. Mary’s as penalty decisions went against the Saints.

Atkinson will be the fourth official on Saturday for Manchester United’s home clash against Sunderland, while Friend will be officiating at West Ham United vs. Crystal Palace in the same capacity. The refereeing assignments have also been dished out for Week 28 as both men will be handed their whistles back to referee midweek matches. Southampton and Crystal Palace will get Atkinson in charge on Tuesday, Mar. 3, while Friend will officiate Arsenal’s trip to QPR on Wed. 4.

...bad news for Southampton fans: their #1 keeper looks set to be out of action for the rest of the season...

Posted Image
Quote:

(NBC ProSoccerTalk) Southampton’s 2-0 win at home against Burnley on Saturday came a cost. A massive one.

Star goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who leads the PL in shutouts as Saints have the best defensive record in English soccer, suffered a horrible looking injury to his left-knee in the early stages at St Mary’s following on innocuous incident which saw him slip as he cleared the ball under pressure. After the game Saints boss Ronald Koeman confirmed that Forster is in hospital and that things are not looking good for the England international.

“Fraser Forster is at hospital and it is looking bad,” Koeman said. “We have to wait for the scan. I hope it will be OK for him but the doctor is not positive. It is good to have an experienced goalkeeper on the bench and he showed his qualities today.”

The 6 foot 7 inch goalkeeper has been ever present for Saints this season and was the only player not to miss a single second of PL action following his $15 million arrival from Celtic last summer. However he now looks set to miss the remainder of the season, just as he looked to be challenging Joe Hart for the No. 1 jersey for England. Forster has been a big reason why Saints currently sit in sixth place and are well in the hunt for a top four finish with eight games to go.

Veteran ‘keeper and club captain Kelvin Davis stepped in superbly on Saturday to make three fine saves in the first half to preserve the shutout and keep Burnley at bay, but you get the feeling that Forster’s likely absence for the rest of the season puts a huge dent in Southampton’s top four hopes.

Everton currently 2-0 against Man United up biggrin
....and the result from the Blue Half of Merseyside: Everton 3, Manchester United 0.
Excerpt...
Quote:

(NBC ProSoccerTalk) A pair of early goals saw Everton comfortably ahead, and they snuffed out Manchester United the rest of the way to earn their third straight victory over the Red Devils at Goodison Park.

James McCarthy and John Stones both hit strikes in the opening 45 minutes, and Everton extinguished every United chance before it developed as Kevin Mirallas delivered the deathblow late.

BBC Sport: Friedel To Retire At Season's End

Posted Image
Quote:

Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel will retire at the end of the season. Friedel, 43, moved to England to join Liverpool in 1997 and has also played for Blackburn, Aston Villa and Spurs.

If the American plays in either of Spurs' last two league games this season he will become the oldest player in Premier League history. "I'm incredibly proud of what I've achieved in my career," he said. "When I first started the journey I never imagined it'd be this long."

Friedel, who will be 44 on 18 May, said he would miss the day-to-day interaction with team-mates and staff. He added: "There really is nothing like it but my 44th birthday is here so I think it is a good time to call it a day."

Friedel holds the record for the most consecutive Premier League appearances - 310, between August 2004 and November 2012 - and is one of only five goalkeepers to score a Premier League goal.

He joined Spurs in 2011 and already holds the record of being their oldest player. But he has not featured this season, with his last league appearance in November 2013.

Playing against Hull City or Everton would see him pass former Manchester City goalkeeper John Burridge's Premier League record of 43 years and 162 days.

"I've had a tremendous time here and met a lot of great people along the way," added Friedel, who has 82 caps for USA. "This is a wonderful football club and I feel honoured to have been a part of it for four years."

Friedel aims to complete his pro-coaching licence and will mix media work with a club ambassador role at Tottenham.
