BBC Sport: Stoppage-Time Smash'n'Grab Win For United Down In South London

Posted Image
Quote:

Nemanja Matic scored a stunning stoppage-time winner as Manchester United came from 2-0 down to go second in the Premier League table and leave Crystal Palace in the relegation zone.

"I always believe we can win. I will be like that until my last day," said United boss Jose Mourinho.

"You always need that little bit of luck to win a match in the last few minutes. Sometimes the winner is the one who deserves the congratulations but I think Roy Hodgson did everything right."

Hodgson's side would have climbed all the way up to 13th place with a win.

But, after Chris Smalling's header started a comeback from an improving United, Romelu Lukaku swept in his 99th Premier League goal to pile the pressure on the tiring hosts.

And, with 91 minutes on the clock, Matic smashed in a dipping shot from 25 yards to consign Palace to another week in the drop zone and move United above Liverpool.

The two giants meet at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime and Mourinho will know that, despite this win, his team must play far better than they did for most of an underwhelming display at Selhurst Park if they are to beat Jurgen Klopp's men.

Palace, who will feel deflated to remain 18th after leading through goals from Andros Townsend and Patrick van Aanholt, must take heart for the dogfight ahead from their committed and organised display with 10 first-team players out.

But, when seconds away from a point, Matic smashed home to inflict a second costly late home defeat in the space of eight days.

Ugly scenes at the Olympic, a somewhat listless Northwest Derby and other news from around the grounds....

(SA) Manchester United solidifed their hold on a top-4 position at the expense of Northwest rivals Liverpool in a somewhat listless 2-1 win at Old Trafford
(SA) Likewise, Chelsea solidifed their chances of a top-4 with a 2-1 win agaisnt fellow Londoners Crystal Palace
(SA) Ugly. No, not just the match but the ugly scenes around it in what is arguably the worst incident in Premier League history; as for the game? Burnley 3, West Ham 0 at the Olympic.
(SA) Newcastle closed in on safety with a dominating 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Southampton down on the South Coast
(SA) If West Brom's not done yet, they will be with more defeats like Saturday's 4-1 debacle to Leicester City
(SA) Everton kept their European hopes alive with a well-fought 2-0 win at Goodison park over Brighton and
(SA) In the day's borefest, Huddersfield and Swansea played to a 0-0 draw at the John Smith Stadium

BBC Sport: Arsenal Return To Winning Ways In 3-0 Victory Over Watford

Posted Image
Quote:

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his team had to "get the fans back on our side again" after ending a run of three successive Premier League defeats with a fine win over Watford.

Despite an official attendance of 59,131, there were empty seats all around the Emirates with a number of season-ticket holders seemingly put off by the Gunners' disappointing league season.

Goals from Shkodran Mustafi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave Wenger's side their first league win since beating Everton 5-1 on 3 February.

"We had a disappointing period and our supporters suffered like we suffered," said Wenger. "But our job is to perform and to stick together in difficult moments, and to get the fans back on our side again."

Watford, beaten for only the second time in six matches, saw Troy Deeney's penalty saved by Petr Cech, who registered the 200th Premier League clean sheet of his career to become the first keeper to reach that mark.

The win leaves the Gunners sixth, 12 points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, who are in the final Champions League spot. However, Arsenal could still qualify for next season's Champions League if they win the Europa League, and that competition affected Arsene Wenger's team selection on Sunday.

With Arsenal holding a 2-0 lead against AC Milan and playing the second leg of their last-16 tie at home on Thursday, Wenger took a risk by making six changes.

Aaron Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny were rested, with Jack Wilshere only on the bench, but the gamble paid off for Arsenal.

Spurs Suffer Injury Scare Despite 4-1 Thrashing Of Bournemouth

Posted Image

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino hailed his side's "perfect response" to their Champions League upset after they came from behind at Bournemouth to go third in the Premier League.

Spurs, who lost Harry Kane to a first-half ankle injury, recovered from their last-16 defeat by Juventus on Wednesday, to win convincingly through Son Heung-min's double and Serge Aurier's late far-post header.

Dele Alli had earlier levelled for the visitors after Junior Stanislas gave Bournemouth a seventh-minute lead.

"The answer today was perfect after Wednesday," said the Spurs boss. "I am so pleased - the reaction was important for the team. They [Bournemouth] played at a high tempo which was difficult. We conceded an early goal but it was a massive three points for us. There is still a lot of work to do, still a lot of things can happen with eight games to go. Big sides are fighting with us to take a position in the top four."

Bournemouth, who remain 12th, thought they had rescued a point via Callum Wilson's 84th-minute strike but referee Mike Dean disallowed it for a shove on Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez, before the visitors scored their two late goals.

Alli gave Tottenham fans a scare when he was replaced late on, as did left-back Danny Rose, who was making his first top-flight appearance of the year, but both were fatigued rather than injured.

It was Pochettino's 150th league win as a manager but a rare recent defeat for his counterpart Eddie Howe, whose side had been beaten just once in their past 10 league fixtures - only Tottenham losing fewer in that period.

Sky Sports: City Move Closer To Title With 2-0 Away Win Over Stoke

Posted Image
Quote:

David Silva scored twice as Manchester City moved a step closer to the Premier League title with a 2-0 win at Stoke City on Monday night.

Man City broke the deadlock after just 10 minutes at the bet365 Stadium thanks to Silva's neat side-footed finish. The Spain midfielder then doubled the visitors' advantage, converting after a lovely move five minutes into the second half. As a result, Pep Guardiola's side will now win the Premier League by beating Everton and second-placed Manchester United in their next two fixtures.

Stoke, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone and a point from safety with just eight games left of the season.

The champions-elect made the perfect start to proceedings, taking an early lead thanks to yet another brilliant team goals that began with Vincent Kompany at the back.

Man City's captain fed the returning Fernandinho in midfield and, after a slick exchange of passes involving Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, the England forward's right-wing cross was swept home by Silva's composed finish, although Jack Butland may have done better in Stoke's goal.

Stoke huffed and puffed in the first half, but the closest the hosts came to equalising was when Xherdan Shaqiri's quick feet saw the Swiss get free to the byline on the right, only for Fernandinho to crucially deflect Badou Ndiaye's goal-bound shot just past the far post. The visitors made Stoke pay for that miss when Silva scored his second of the night after 50 minutes, and his eighth league goal of the campaign, as Paul Lambert's team were again undone by a breathtaking goal.

Fernandinho picked out the Spain international, who then found Jesus lurking just outside the box, with the forward's lovely return pass allowing Silva to hook the ball over the advancing Butland to give Man City breathing space.

Man City moved up a further gear and were unlucky not to add more goals in the final quarter, but a combination of poor finishing, excellent goalkeeping and bad luck denied both Sterling and the impressive Leroy Sane.

Not that that mattered, and with Man City having now collected 81 points from their 30 league games this season, they have now equalled Leicester City's total as champions three years ago.

The Guardian: Mark Hughes Appointed SOuthampton manager Through End Of 2017-2018 Season

Posted Image
Quote:

Mark Hughes has claimed he could not turn down the opportunity to become Southampton’s new manager after the club confirmed the Welshman as Mauricio Pellegrino’s successor on Wednesday night.

Hughes’s first game will be an FA Cup tie at Wigan Athletic on Sunday but the club’s principal focus is on trying to stay in the Premier League. Southampton are one point and one place above the relegation zone with eight matches remaining.

Hughes, who made 60 appearances as a player for Southampton between 1998 and 2000, has signed a deal until the end of the season and it is believed he will earn a £1m bonus if he keeps the club in the top flight.

“It’s a challenge I’m excited by,” Hughes said. “It’s a great opportunity to come back to a club I know well and a club I’ve got real affinity with, and I couldn’t turn that down.

“I bring experience of the Premier League and I’ve won a lot of points in my career as a Premier League manager. I understand what it takes to win games in this league. First and foremost, it’s about coming in and giving different messages from myself and the staff.”

Southampton moved fast to replace Pellegrino, who they sacked on Monday having appointed the Argentinian last June, with Hughes available after being sacked by Stoke in January. He previously managed Wales, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers.

The 54-year-old will be joined at St Mary’s by his regular assistant manager Mark Bowen and assistant first‑team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki. The coaching team are due to take training for the first time on Thursday.

In a statement Southampton said: “The club is confident that this appointment will allow the complete focus of the manager, players and staff to be on the remaining games of this season.”

The Guardian: Spurs Break 28-Year Away Losing Streak With 3-1 Win At Stamford Bridge

Posted Image
Quote:

Tottenham Hotspur had been waiting 28 long years for this moment. Not since Gary Lineker wrestled himself free of a scrum of bodies at the far post to nod a late Nayim cross down and beyond Dave Beasant had their travelling fans, on an exposed terrace that afternoon in February 1990, been able to revel in this arena at Chelsea’s expense, or bounce their way gleefully through the post-match crowing while the locals skulked away.

Spurs have since seen a title challenge wrecked, and far too many humiliations for comfort. Their team have been put to the sword almost as a matter of course, a succession of managers and lineups thrashed out of sight. In that context this must have felt exquisite, even before the extension of the gap from fifth to eight points – such a healthy advantage with seven games to play – had been taken into account. “I will celebrate the win like I celebrate any win,” said Mauricio Pochettino, whose half-hearted attempts to play down the achievement fooled no one. “But winning at Stamford Bridge again is a massive thing for our fans and for Tottenham.”

It was Dele Alli, born more than six years after this club’s last win in these parts and making his 100th top-flight appearance here, who capitalised on the hosts’ shortcomings to exorcise the ghosts of 27 winless visits to this stadium. Chelsea had been punctured by Christian Eriksen’s fine equaliser and never really recovered their poise, though it was Alli whose calm ruthlessness in front of goal put them to shame. Just after the hour a straight pass, lofted from inside the centre circle by Eric Dier, bypassed the hosts’ backline and the midfielder, darting into a hint of space between Andreas Christensen and César Azpilicueta, controlled wonderfully with his first touch and finished emphatically with his second.

The Guardian: Aubameyang Brace Lifts Gunners To 3-0 Win Over Stoke City

Posted Image
Quote:

For anyone down at the bottom there is a sense of inevitability that the breaks will go to the opposition. This was Stoke City’s lament. They had held their own at a typically edgy Emirates Stadium until Bruno Martins Indi stretched into a penalty-box challenge on Mesut Özil in the 74th minute.

It looked clumsy and a little risky but TV replays confirmed that Martins Indi had got a toe to the ball. Craig Pawson’s penalty award felt like a kick to the guts.

Stoke have only ever tasted defeat at this venue – their last away win against Arsenal came at Highbury in 1981 – and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set the latest reverse in motion when he converted the penalty.

Aubameyang added a lovely second before the substitute Alexandre Lacazette gave the scoreline a gloss that had not looked likely at half-time – when Arsenal were booed off – with another penalty. It was Lacazette’s first action since mid-February and knee surgery. He had replaced Danny Welbeck, who suffered a back problem.

(SA) Newcastle took a big step towards safety with a 2-1 away win at the King Power over Leicester City

The Guardian: Newcastle Take Vital Home Win Over Arsenal

Posted Image
Quote:

A resigned, almost brutally realistic, Arsène Wenger described Arsenal’s fifth successive away defeat in the Premier League as “the story of our season”. His side’s 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United means Arsenal have failed to collect a single point on the domestic road during 2018, casting their manager’s future into serious doubt.

Much hinges on their ability to overcome Atlètico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final and then win the trophy but the fatigue induced by the quarter-final second-leg draw at CSKA Moscow on Thursday clearly played a part in their second‑half downfall on Tyneside where they could not sustain a fiercely intense early tempo.

“It’s the story of our season,” said Wenger, who thought Arsenal might have had a penalty when Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang’s first-half shot hit Jamaal Lascelle’s hand. “We had 70% of possession and were 1-0 up. You wonder how you can lose this game. It could have been over at half-time. It’s very harsh to swallow a defeat like this. It’s very disappointing.

“Of course it’s a concern to have lost five games in a row away because traditionally we have a very strong record away. It has become a subconscious weight on our minds. Once you’re in a negative spiral like this it is very hard to get out of.”

The Guardian: West Brom Win Over United, City Crowned League Champions

Posted Image
Quote:

The only surprise, perhaps, is that Manchester United have kept the title race going as long as they have when they are capable of playing this abysmally. They find themselves 16 points behind Manchester City, the newly crowned Premier League champions. Their goal difference is 31 inferior to Pep Guardiola’s team and the final twist in the story of a one-sided title race counts as a humiliation for a club with their haughty ambitions.

It was a defeat at home by the Premier League’s wooden-spoon team, with the Old Trafford stands barely half-full and the players booed off by many of the people who had chosen not to leave early. Was this really the team who won 3-2 at City in one of the season’s great comebacks? It was only eight days earlier that Mourinho’s players could be seen throwing their shirts into a euphoric away end at the Etihad Stadium. Now they were wandering around like zombies, drenched in a Mancunian downpour, losing against the worst team in the league.

Mourinho called his players the “masters of complicated football” but that was being generous after one of the more startling displays of his two years in charge. West Brom have been submerged in the relegation quicksands since December. Their previous away win in the league came in August and there has been only one other occasion in the Premier League years, against Blackburn Rovers in 2011, when United have lost at home against the league’s bottom club.

Even when Jay Rodriguez headed in the decisive goal, in the 73rd minute, it was alarming to see the lack of fight from a team, lest it be forgotten, that have won this league 20 times. Sir Alex Ferguson used to boast there was no other side in the world who scored as many late goals as his – but not the current version. United drifted aimlessly towards the final whistle without ever looking as if they had the wit or gumption to save themselves. Thousands of people had gone before the end. “Manchester City, we’ve won you the league,” was the cry from the West Brom fans.

BBC Sport: West Ham Draw With Stoke City, Pushing Potters To Brink Of Relegation

Posted Image
Quote:

Stoke City boss Paul Lambert said he "can't ask for any more effort" from his players after Andy Carroll's dramatic late equaliser for West Ham took the Potters closer to relegation. The Hammers are now seven points clear of the relegation zone, with Stoke five points adrift of safety with four games left.

Stoke looked set for a first win in 10 games when Peter Crouch took advantage of Joe Hart's fumble to score. But fellow substitute Carroll, in his first appearance since January, volleyed home a last-minute equaliser from Aaron Cresswell's cross.

Despite only winning the first of his 11 games in charge since replacing the sacked Mark Hughes in January, Lambert thinks his side would be certainties to stay up if they had played like this for the whole of the campaign. "If the team had been playing like that at the start of the season, I wouldn't be here - and they wouldn't be in the position they're in," he said. "I still think we need three wins. If we can get a little break on Sunday against Burnley, we're certainly in with a fight."

The Hammers thought they had won the game when Javier Hernandez scored in injury time, but it was disallowed for a Carroll handball in the build-up.

It was the third goal they had ruled out in the game. On the first occasion Marko Arnautovic was offside when he headed home - and then he was interfering with play from Edimilson Fernandes' shot.

All three decisions were correct calls by referee Michael Oliver, following a difficult few days in which he and his wife have been harassed after he awarded Real Madrid a last-minute penalty against Juventus and sent off Gianluigi Buffon in the Champions League on Wednesday.

With both sides' Premier League places in jeopardy, it was a hotly contested game for the official to deal with - the match produced 36 fouls, the joint-highest in a Premier League game this season. "I think he is a really top referee," said Lambert. "He got unfairly criticised from a lot of quarters. He had a good game today."
