BBC Sport: Brighton & Spurs Draw 1-1

- Quote:
-
Brighton edged closer to Premier League safety with a hard-earned point against a much-changed Tottenham side.
Harry Kane's 26th league goal of the season, following Gaetan Bong's error, put Spurs in sight of an 11th away win.
But Brighton were behind for just two minutes before Pascal Gross levelled with an excellent penalty after Serge Aurier had caught Jose Izquierdo.
The Seagulls are without a win in six games but are eight points above the relegation zone with four games left.
Spurs almost won it through an own goal when Shane Duffy deflected Christian Eriksen's cross a fraction wide. -Read more: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43707378

BBC Sport: Chelsea Hold Off Scrappy Burnley For 2-1 Away Win

- Quote:
-
Chelsea maintained their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory at European hopefuls Burnley. Kevin Long's own goal set Antonio Conte's men on their way in the first half, but Ashley Barnes deflected Johann Berg Gudmundsson's wayward shot to equalise for Burnley at Turf Moor.
Victor Moses' right-footed shot into the bottom corner proved decisive and ensured the Blues, who trailed fourth-placed Tottenham by 10 points last week, narrowed the gap to five points.
Chelsea have the opportunity to increase the pressure on their London rivals when they travel to Swansea on 28 April.
Mauricio Pochettino's team face Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday and do not play in the league again until they meet Watford on 30 April. Sean Dyche's Burnley remain seventh and on course for the Europa League with an eight-point advantage over Leicester City in eighth.
With one eye on the semi-final, Chelsea's strength in depth afforded Conte the luxury of making six changes to his starting XI without it impairing their performance. They were accomplished going forward despite the absence of Cesc Fabregas and Willian, while Eden Hazard appeared only as a second-half substitute.
Chelsea fielded a two-man attack - in the form of Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud - for the first time in seven years.
While Chelsea's finishing was profligate at times - particularly when Morata missed a one-on-one with Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope after N'Golo Kante sent him clear - they were exemplary in their defensive work, restricting an obdurate Burnley to only two shots on target. -Read more: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43353970
BBC Sport: Leicester, Southampton Play To Listless 0-0 Draw

- Quote:
-
Southampton have to "take more risks" and "just go for it" says manager Mark Hughes, after the Saints were held to a goalless draw against Leicester at the King Power.
The Saints remain four points from safety and are winless in their last eight games as they head into Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea at Wembley.
"We need to be on the front foot," said Hughes. "We have to ask more questions than we did of Leicester."
Southampton's Shane Long was denied from close range in the second half after Leicester striker Kelechi Iheanacho went close before the break.
Saints keeper Alex McCarthy also tipped over Jamie Vardy's prodded effort as Leicester searched for a winner.
"Defensively we were better but we have got to get the balance right," added Hughes. "We need to defend properly and be a threat the other way.
"Only time will tell to see whether the point is enough for us. We are looking to get maximum points from every game now.
"The players are a little bit flat and we have got a big game at the weekend but we are not in the situation where we are downhearted."
Southampton's next Premier League match is on 28 April when they host Bournemouth - one of four remaining games of the season. -Read more: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43734550

BBC Sport: West Brom Come Back To Split Points 2-2 With Liverpool

- Quote:
-
West Brom produced a "useless comeback" by scoring two late goals to take a point at the Hawthorns, says Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The hosts were 2-0 down after 79 minutes - Danny Ings and Mohamed Salah on target for the Reds - before goals from Jake Livermore and Salomon Rondon. However the Baggies will be relegated on Sunday if Swansea beat Manchester City.
"I don't think that point will help West Brom massively, it is a complete waste of points. They don't need it, we would have needed it," Klopp added. "They are happy now, we are not happy. We stay in the league, they don't stay in the league - it is a strange situation."
The German also criticised the Hawthorns' "dry pitch" after the draw.
The host's comeback started when Livermore scrambled home at a corner for his first goal at the club before Rondon headed in Chris Brunt's free-kick in the 88th minute.
Salah had earlier continued his brilliant form with a chipped second-half finish which takes him to 31 Premier League goals this season and sees him equal the record for a 38-game campaign.
Liverpool, who made five changes to their starting line-up with their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday in mind, were ahead after just four minutes through Ings. The Englishman, who was making just his second start under Jurgen Klopp, stroked home from six yards for his first goal since October 2015.
The draw ensures West Brom caretaker manager Darren Moore extends his unbeaten start in charge, but his side remain bottom, eight points from safety with three games left. -Read more: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43762952
BBC Sport: Wattford & Palace Move Closer To Safety Following 0-0 Draw

- Quote:
-
Wilfried Zaha receives "attention he does not deserve" according to Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson, despite another booking for diving.
Zaha was cautioned by referee Chris Kavanagh after going down inside the Watford penalty area following a challenge by Adrian Mariappa. It was his fourth booking for simulation in the Premier League since the start of the 2015-16 season. "I think he would have got the penalty in another game," said Hodgson.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Hodgson added: "When the rumours spread that he's a cheat and not the honest player he is, the crowd are led by that. "He's given attention he doesn't deserve. Hopefully I'm not being one-eyed."
In a scrappy match littered with eight yellow cards, Palace edged six points clear of the relegation zone after frustrating Watford.
The visitors were twice denied by the woodwork after half-time, captain Luka Milivojevic hitting the bar from a free-kick before James Tomkins headed against a post. Watford also struck the woodwork when Italian forward Stefano Okaka nodded Troy Deeney's cross against the bar.
The Eagles climb one place to 15th in the table. Watford remain 12th, nine points clear of relegation with three games to go, although they have played more games than most teams below them. -Read more: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43762951

BBC Sport: Evertton Move To 8th With 1-0 Win Over Newcastle

- Quote:
-
Everton manager Sam Allardyce defended his side's style of football as the Toffees laboured to a 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Monday. Theo Walcott scored his first goal since January as the hosts moved up to eighth in the Premier League.
Some fans have criticised Everton's performances under Allardyce, but the ex-Newcastle boss felt his side played well against his former team.
"What was wrong with our style?" he said to Sky Sports. "You can't knock our football. You can knock some of our passing that went astray, but you can't knock me for that. I don't pass the ball. Apart from the last 10 minutes we dominated the game and there was only going to be one winner."
A dull first half bore all the hallmarks of an end-of-season mid-table encounter with goalscoring opportunities at a premium.
However, the deadlock was broken soon after the break when Yannick Bolasie's cross deflected off DeAndre Yedlin to Walcott, who took a touch before driving the ball into the roof of the net.
The game briefly opened up after that and Newcastle substitute Dwight Gayle should have done better when he hooked a shot over from close range before Seamus Coleman made an important headed clearance in stoppage time.
Ultimately, a lack of quality in the final third proved Newcastle's undoing as they spurned several other opportunities to create something and Everton recorded a first win in four games to move onto 45 points.
Newcastle remain 10th on 41 points and need just one more point to be mathematically safe from relegation. -Read more: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43779259

BBC Sport: City Tops 100 Goals For Season In 4-1 Rout Of West Ham

- Quote:
-
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hailed the "incredible" numbers produced by his side as they reached 100 Premier League goals for the season with a 4-1 win at struggling West Ham.
The champions' emphatic victory at London Stadium left the Hammers in a precarious position above the relegation zone. "The numbers are a consequence of what we have done," Guardiola said. "We are so happy to be getting close to history. We will try to surpass the number of goals and points.
"We wanted to win today so that we can get the record of 96 points at home when we get the trophy in front of our people next week."
City - who are now on 93 points - took the lead when Leroy Sane's shot deflected off the head of Patrice Evra and wrong-footed Hammers goalkeeper Adrian.
A series of West Ham defensive mishaps culminated in a Pablo Zabaleta own goal which gave City a two-goal advantage and saw them reach the landmark century.
Aaron Cresswell gave the Hammers a foothold in the game shortly before the break when he curled home a free-kick inside Ederson's near post. However, inspired by a brilliant performance from Raheem Sterling, City reasserted their control of the contest early in the second half.
Having earlier teed up Sane, Sterling claimed a hat-trick of assists after the break when he set up Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho to finish clinically from inside the box.
West Ham are three points clear of 18th-placed Southampton, who occupy the final relegation place. -Read more: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43854105
BBC Sport: United Defeat Arsenal 2-1 In Wenger's Final Visit To Old Trafford

- Quote:
-
Arsene Wenger's final trip to Manchester United as Arsenal manager ended in an agonising defeat after an injury-time winner from Marouane Fellaini.
The Belgium international flicked a header past Gunners goalkeeper David Ospina from an Ashley Young cross.
Just three minutes earlier he had headed against the post, with Marcus Rashford bundling home the rebound from an offside position.
United had opened the scoring on 16 minutes when a header from former Arsenal player Alexis Sanchez was knocked on to the post by Hector Bellerin and Paul Pogba stabbed home the rebound for his third goal in four league games.
The hosts lost striker Romelu Lukaku to injury early in the second half, and moments later Henrikh Mkhitaryan was left in plenty of space to weave and strike through the legs of Victor Lindelof.
The game's tempo petered out after the equaliser - until Fellaini - who Jose Mourinho says is close to a new contract - popped up to snatch the win for United, and secure Champions League football for next season. -Read more: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43854104

(30 April 2018) BBC Sport: Spurs Solidify Top-4 Placing With 2-0 Win Over Watford

- Quote:
-
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino praised his side's "massive" win as they beat Watford to move closer to securing qualification for next season's Champions League.
Goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane gave fourth-placed Spurs a scrappy victory at Wembley Stadium that took them five points clear of Chelsea with only three matches to play.
"It was a game we had to win and we won, so I'm happy about that," said Pochettino. "Maybe the performance was not great, but the most important thing is to get the three points. This is massive. It puts us in a very good position fighting for the top four and that is the objective for the rest of the season."
Spurs capitalised on an error from Hornets goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis as Christian Eriksen set up Alli and the England midfielder scored from 12 yards out. Kane doubled Spurs' lead early in the second half from Kieran Trippier's pull-back and Jan Vertonghen later headed against the post.
Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris denied Andre Gray and Richarlison, with the Brazilian also shooting over from six yards out.
The visitors are still not guaranteed Premier League safety and this defeat extended their winless run to seven matches. -read more: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43860887

BBC Sport: City Midfielder To Leave At End Of Season

- Quote:
-
Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure will leave the Premier League champions at the end of the season. The 34-year-old will make his final appearance against Brighton on Wednesday, said manager Pep Guardiola.
Ivory Coast international Toure, who joined City from Barcelona for a fee of about £24m in 2010, signed a new one-year contract in June 2017.
"Yaya came here at the start of the journey," said Guardiola. "Where we are now is because of what he has done. We cannot forget the period from Roberto Mancini, and especially Manuel Pellegrini, Yaya was the key player.
"The Brighton game we will give him what he deserves, one of the most beautiful farewells a player can receive. All the game will we be focused on winning for Yaya, we are going to try to do it for him."
City host Brighton on 9 May before travelling to Southampton for the final game of the season.
Toure has made 229 Premier League appearances in his eight seasons at Etihad Stadium.
He has won three league titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups in his time at the club but has made just nine league appearances this season.

The Guardian: Brighton Reach Safety With 1-0 Win Over United

- Quote:
-
Brighton have enjoyed plenty of giddy highs since their restoration to the top division last summer but this was a victory to cap them all. By securing a first win over Manchester United in 36 years Chris Hughton’s team are safe. The wave of relief that swept round the Amex at the final whistle swiftly turned to raucous delight. There will be top-flight football in Sussex by the sea for another year.
This was a glorious way to achieve a season’s objective, a success achieved as Pascal Gross’s header crept exactly 28.3mm over the goal-line before Marcos Rojo could hook the effort away, and one to be savoured through the delighted din of the players’ post-match lap of appreciation.
Gross was outstanding, as he has been for much of his first season in England since joining for £3m after Ingolstadt slipped out of the Bundesliga. The German’s determination to reach José Izquierdo’s centre, which had flicked off David de Gea’s glove into a muddle of bodies off the far post, summed up the home side’s urgent desire to secure safety, even if their goal celebrations were briefly delayed until the referee’s watch had buzzed.
Albion’s run-in had always looked daunting, with trips to the Premier League champions and Champions League finalists to come in the final week. Yet by winning for the first time since early March and discomforting United all night, they have quelled fears of a late sting in the season’s tail.
“It’s a relief because I felt we’ve deserved to stay in this league for our season’s work,” said Hughton. “If we’d lost today and the next two and somehow gone down, it would have been a real feeling of injustice. Normally when you win this type of game it’s because you’ve played at a good level and maybe your keeper has had to make some good saves or they’ve missed some chances. But United didn’t have a clear-cut chance in the 90 minutes. We were good value for the win.”
That was an understatement. Brighton’s attacking approach play had been more assured and incisive all night, led by Izquierdo and Anthony Knockaert, who tends to rouse himself for occasions such as these. The hosts’ back-line was obdurate and organised, their midfield industrious and energetic and neither of United’s centre-halves ever appeared at ease in trying to combat the splendidly awkward Glenn Murray. De Gea’s stunning first-half save denied the striker from distance. Izquierdo would be thwarted in similar fashion before José Mourinho could haul his players back into the dressing-room for a dressing-down. -Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/may/04/brighton-manchester-united-premier-league-match-report

The Guardian: Stoke Relegated Following Loss To Palace

- Quote:
-
Exactly a decade ago on Friday, Stoke won promotion to the Premier League with a tense draw against Leicester. Their 10 season spell in the top flight is now over, after a 2-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace confirmed their relegation.
At full-time they remained three points from safety with one game to play, but because Swansea face Southampton on Tuesday, one of those teams’ tally will increase beyond what is available to Paul Lambert’s side.
Xherdan Shaqiri had given Stoke both the lead and a bit of hope, but second-half strikes from James McArthur and Patrick van Aanholt, combined with an anaemic display in which the Potters looked absolutely terrified of their fate, sent them down.
The sun burned bright and so, surreally enough, did the floodlights at the Bet365 Stadium. The home fans did their best to intimidate, booing every slight delay of a Palace throw-in as if the taker had spat on the statue of Stanley Matthews that stands outside the ground... -Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/may/05/stoke-crystal-palace-premier-league-match-report

Sky Sports: West Brom Relegated As Southampton Win Vital Relegation 6-Pointer

- Quote:
-
Substitute Manolo Gabbiadini brought Southampton close to safety as they saw off Swansea 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium, confirming West Brom's relegation from the Premier League. The result means Swansea must hope they beat Stoke on Sunday and Huddersfield lose their last two games, while Southampton will be safe barring a defeat against Manchester City and a large goal swing towards Swansea.
Gabbiadini grabbed the winner with 17 minutes remaining after a scramble inside the penalty area, one of few clear-cut opportunities in a nervy encounter.
With so much at stake, the first half was a cagey affair, with half-chances falling to Sam Clucas and Charlie Austin inside the penalty area, but things picked up in the second.
Jordan Ayew forced a wonderful fingertip save from Alex McCarthy having cut inside from the left and unleashed a fine effort from 20 yards which was bound for the top corner.
Saints should have been ahead on the hour mark, but Austin's header in space eight yards out from Cedric Soares' cross was straight at Lukasz Fabianski.
But on 72 minutes they did break the deadlock as sub Gabbiadini, who had been on the pitch for just five minutes, drove home from close range after Alfie Mawson had blocked Shane Long's volley on the goal line. -Read more: http://www.skysports.com/football/swansea-vs-soton/373404
