....could we be seeing a former American soccer legend take the reins at Leicester City?

(BBC Sport) Former Everton winger Predrag 'Preki' Radosavljevic has announced he has accepted a coaching job "in the UK", but is yet to name the club. The 52-year-old has left his role as coach of Sacramento Republic in the third division of US football.

The announcement saw British bookmakers install him as favourite for the Leicester City job. "The opportunity ahead is a chance to challenge myself at the highest level of the game," said Preki.

Leicester are the only team in the Premier League and Football League currently without a manager. Nigel Pearson was sacked in June, despite guiding the Foxes to 14th in the Premier League in 2014-15.

Serbian-born American Preki won 28 caps for the US football team after acquiring US citizenship in 1996. He spent two years at Goodison Park after being signed by Howard Kendall in the summer of 1992 and made 25 starts for the Toffees, scoring four goals.

He then moved to Portsmouth for £100,000 but spent just one season at Fratton Park. Preki spent the majority of his career in America, playing for indoor side Tacoma Stars and Kansas City Wizards in Major League Soccer.

He has managed Chivas and Toronto in the MLS and was named MLS Coach of the Year in 2007.

...if reports are confirmed, Aston Villa's captain will be staying in the Midlands after all...

Quote:

(BBC Sport) Aston Villa captain Fabian Delph says he is staying at the club, following reports the midfielder was set to join Manchester City.

The England international has released a statement to "set the record straight" over his future. "I'm not leaving," said Delph, 25, who signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal at Villa in January. "I'm staying at the football club and I can't wait for the start of the Premier League season."

It had been widely reported on Friday that Delph, who joined Villa from Leeds in 2009, would have a medical with City at the weekend.

His future looked uncertain when Micah Richards, who moved from City to Villa this summer, said Delph had asked for his thoughts about the Sky Blues. And Delph did not travel with the Villa squad for their pre-season training camp in Portugal.

Delph made his England debut against Norway at the beginning of last season. He helped Villa retain their Premier League status last term, making 28 league appearances, and also played a key role in their run to the FA Cup final, where they lost 4-0 to Arsenal.

On Friday Villa announced the signing of Lille midfielder Idrissa Gueye. and in May they signed midfielder Scott Sinclair, 26, from Manchester City.

(BBC Sport) Aston Villa captain Fabian Delph has signed a five-year contract at Manchester City less than a week after saying he was staying at Villa Park. England midfielder Delph's move to City had appeared over after he "set the record straight" over his future.

City agreed to meet an £8m release clause inserted into the new four-and-a-half-year contract signed in January. "At just 25 years old, he still has his best years ahead," said City boss Manuel Pellegrini. "He is an excellent player, I am looking forward to working with him."

Delph completed a medical on Friday and will fly to Australia over the weekend to join his new team-mates for pre-season training. He will wear the number 18 shirt which Frank Lampard, now at New York City, wore last season.

Aston Villa released a 30-word statement confirming their captain's exit. "Aston Villa can confirm that Fabian Delph has exercised the release clause in his contract and will join Manchester City," it said. "We'd like to wish him success in his future career."

NBC ProSoccerTalk: Lambert Revival? English Striker Moves To West Brom

Posted Image
Quote:

Rickie Lambert and Tony Pulis might just be a match made in Midlands paradise. The workmanlike 33-year-old forward sealed his move from Liverpool to West Bromwich Albion on Friday, ending his second stint with his boyhood club after just over a year.

Lambert could be a good mate for Saido Berahino should he stay, or a tower to work with Brown Ideye in a striker pairing. The Baggies also have Victor Anichebe in their strike force.

Pulis is happy to have Lambert aboard, and forward wore No. 17 in scoring a goal 23 minutes into his Baggies debut (WBA is playing Bristol Rovers in a Friday friendly). From WBA.co.uk: “Rickie is a good, strong, solid player who is a great character, good in the dressing room and good on the pitch,” said the Albion head coach. “We are very pleased to have him on board. He’s a player of great pedigree and we look forward to integrating him into our squad.”

It’s hard not to root for Lambert, who suffered through a rough year at Liverpool in which he scored three goals in 36 appearances. He scored 28 Premier League goals for Southampton in the previous seasons. As for Lambert, is this the case of a 33-year-old who’s rolled over the hill, or can he return to the 2013-14 form which saw him score double-digit goals and assists?

.....Aston Villa's French Revolution continued apace...
Quote:

(NBC ProSoccerTalk) Bonjour, Aston Villa.

Tim Sherwood signed two more French-born players on Friday as he has continues to spend the $62 million Villa received for selling Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph this summer on French imports.

Villa has so far brought in nine new players this offseason, as Sherwood looks to boost a squad that finished just one place and three points above the relegation zone last year.

Jordan Veretout, 22, became Villa’s fourth signing from a Ligue 1 club this summer — following in the footsteps of Jordan Ayew, Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Amavi — with the Nantes midfielder arriving for an undisclosed fee on a five-year deal. Veretout has made 146 appearances for Nantes since making his debut in 2011 and won the U-20 World Cup with the national team in 2013. The youngster can play in central midfield or is equally adept moving forward into the No. 10 role and he was previously a target for Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

As for Villa’s other signing on Friday, Rudy Gestede arrived from Championship side Blackburn Rovers with the 26-year-old signing a five-year deal. Gestede scored 22 goals for Rovers in England’s second-tier last season and was heavily linked with a move to Crystal Palace in January. Gestede played three times in the PL when his former club Cardiff City were promoted in 2013-14 but the Benin international striker (who played for France’s youth teams) will now play a much more prominent role for a PL club. Gestede will be a replacement for Benteke, as the powerful forward can hold the ball up and bring others in to play.

So, are Villa spending this money wisely? They have gone for the part-Newcastle, part-Liverpool approach in terms of their spending this summer. Like Newcastle did a few years ago under Alan Pardew, they’ve seen a market in Ligue 1 which has players who are playing at the top level week in, week out, but are available for cheap transfer fees and wages. But, this scattergun approach to replace two or three big signings doesn’t always work out. See: Liverpool last season, and you can bring Tottenham into this conversation too, as they spent the money they received in September 2013 for Gareth Bale on a large quantity of players, rather than top quality.

Sherwood had to overhaul Villa’s roster, but picking up so many youngsters who have no experience in the PL is a gamble.

Remember Rickie Lambert? You know, that guy we signed last year who didn't have the best of seasons'...and who eventually headed to West Brom this week? Well, here's what happened on Lambert's debut for the Baggies...

(BBC Sport) Rickie Lambert joined West Brom from Liverpool - and scored twice on his debut for the club three hours later. The 33-year-old striker signed a two-year deal for a reported fee of nearly £3m and netted goals in a 4-0 victory over his former club Bristol Rovers.

"Rickie is a good, strong, solid player who is a great character, good in the dressing room and good on the pitch," said West Brom head coach Tony Pulis. "We are very pleased to have him on board."

....now, think about that for a moment; let it sink in....he netted three goals for Liverpool last year...he's already hit two and we're not even in the season yet. sad1 sad1 sad1

....if reports to be believed here, English football's resident Mouth of the South is set to move to the Boleyn Ground in short order...

(NBC ProSoccerTalk) The BBC is reporting that mercurial but industrious midfielder Joey Barton will have a medical on Monday ahead of a move to West Ham United.

The former QPR man, 32, would provide even more steel to an intriguing Hammers’ side that upset Arsenal 2-0 on the opening weekend of Premier League play.

Despite a tumultuous reputation that included a 77-day prison stay for assault and affray, Barton hasn’t bounced from club to club. He spent five seasons at Man City, five more at Newcastle, then four at QPR with a season-long loan to Marseille in the middle.

Even in watching Aston Villa play Bournemouth this week — Barton had been linked with Tim Sherwood’s Villans — Barton raised a bit of controversy by saying the best player was watching the match...him.
