BBC Sport: West Ham Part Ways With Captain

Posted Image
Quote:

Captain Kevin Nolan has left West Ham United by mutual consent after four years at the Premier League club. The 33-year-old midfielder played 157 games for the east London side, scoring 31 goals, following his arrival from Newcastle United in June 2011.

The Liverpool-born player helped the Hammers win promotion to the Premier League in his first season. "I'm now looking forward to the next challenge playing for a new club," he told West Ham's official website.

Manager Slaven Bilic said Nolan left the club because he could not be promised regular football. The club added: "We would like to thank Kevin for his considerable effort and commitment over the past four seasons and wish him all the very best for the future, on and off the football pitch."

Nolan made his first Premier League start of the season in the Hammers' 4-3 home defeat by Bournemouth last weekend, but was replaced at half-time.

The 21-year-old joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon for £4m last summer and made 36 appearances, playing at right-back and centre-back. This season the versatile England Under-21 international has also played in central midfield.

Dier missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for the European Under-21 Championship this summer.

Premier League: Payet Brace Leads West Ham To 2-0 Victory
Quote:

Dimitri Payet scored early in both halves as West Ham United eased to a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Barclays Premier League. The France midfielder formed part of Slaven Bilic's new-look attacking line-up at Upton Park and was the man of the match as they capitalised on a poor display from Steve McClaren's men, who stay in the bottom three with two points from five matches.

A stunning strike from Payet gave the hosts the lead in the ninth minute and the player bought from Marseille was on target again within four minutes of the restart. Victor Moses, on his debut, struck on the break after a Newcastle free-kick had been cleared but his shot hit the crossbar. It fell to Payet to make the most of the rebound and double his tally for the evening. The goal put the game to bed as McClaren saw his side struggle for attacking intent and ideas in the absence of the suspended striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

For Bilic, who handed Andy Carroll his first appearance since February off the bench, there will be delight to have earned a first home win that has built on the 3-0 victory at Liverpool with another vibrant performance.

West Ham led after just nine minutes as Payet's impressive start to Barclays Premier League life continued with an expert finish into the top right-hand corner after after smart build-up from Mark Noble and Diafra Sakho. The Frenchman went close again soon after following positive play down the right from Moses, who was signed on loan from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

Newcastle struggled to establish themselves in the match. Their first chance fell to Daryl Janmaat but the right-back could only shoot straight at Darren Randolph from inside the area.

Moses had the chance to double West Ham's lead before the interval, shooting wide after a quick counter, with the half for Bilic only soured by Angelo Ogbonna limping off late on.

The home side started the second half on the front foot and were rewarded when Payet doubled his tally following another dangerous counter off the back of a Newcastle free-kick. Moses again showed strength and pace before rattling the crossbar, with Payet on hand to volley the rebound past Vurnon Anita and Krul on the line.

With the match drifting away from his side, McClaren introduced Ayoze Perez and Siem de Jong but it was Janmaat who again went closest, forcing Randolph into a save down to his left from close range.

A lack of creativity continued to stifle the visitors, although De Jong saw his deflected strike tipped over well by Randolph.

--West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: "Three points at home are vital because you want yours fans to go home happy, to go to the pub and have a drink."

--Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren: "We didn't do what we've been doing for the first four games, when we've been hard to beat and won our duels. West Ham were gunning for it, and we didn't match that."

....is it just me or is "the Special One" just a wee bit perturbed at the moment?
Quote:

(BBC Sport) Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has rejected being affected by 'third season syndrome' and told a BBC reporter to "Google answers to stupid questions".

The Premier League champions are 17th in the table after losing three of their opening five games of the season.
Asked if he still has the qualities of a great manager, Mourinho replied: "The point is that the question is stupid. I am sorry."

The Blues face Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Portuguese manager, who joined the club in 2013 for a second spell, said losing is a "strange feeling" after his side's worst start to a top-flight season in 29 years.
Chelsea's 3-2 victory away at West Brom in August is their only victory in the league so far.

He added: "I promise you I am fine. I am not happy. I am not used to losing so many times but I am adapting to the situation. You cannot expect me to say it is all smiles, laughing and jokes. When people are not getting success we work for, we are going to be frustrated.

"We know what we are - champions of England. The fans sing that. Nobody can steal what we are or our trophies or our history, you can try but you can't do that.

"When you are used to winning all the time, then when you don't it is a strange feeling. Some people deal well with it, others not as good."

In a testy exchange with BBC Sport's Ben Smith, Mourinho rejected the idea that performances of the teams he has managed deteriorated in his third season in charge:

Ben Smith: Do you believe that you still have all the qualities that made you such a great manager? A lot has been made of the third season in your time at clubs - what do you say to that?
Jose Mourinho: Look, my third season - in Porto, I didn't have a third season. My third season in Inter, I didn't have a third season. My third season at Chelsea the first time, I won the FA Cup and the Carling Cup, and I played the Champions League semi-finals. My third season in Real Madrid, I won the Super Cup, I lost the cup [Copa del Rey] final, and I went to the Champions League semi-finals. These are my third seasons...

BS: Sure, but you know what I'm getting at...
JM: So click Google, instead of making stupid questions, click Google and try to find.

BS: Jose, you know what I'm getting at though, don't you, how important is it for you to build...
JM: No, you spoke about the third season, and I am telling you that the question is stupid, because the third season is what I told you.

BS: Jose, you know the point of the question...
JM: No, I know the point, the point is that the question is stupid. I am sorry...
[At this point a Chelsea press officer intervenes]

...would it be safe to assume that both Jose Mourinho & Diego Costa won't be on Arsene Wenger's Christmas card list this year?
Quote:

(BBC Sport) The Football Association should look into how Chelsea striker Diego Costa escaped a red card at Stamford Bridge, says Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

But Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho accused Wenger of moaning as Arsenal lost 2-0 and had two men dismissed.
Arsenal defender Gabriel was sent off after clashing with Costa at the end of the first half.

"He [Costa] will do the same again next week and the week after that and he always gets away with it," said Wenger.

When asked if the FA should take retrospective action, Wenger added: "That is the least they could do. Costa can do what he wants and yet he stays on and everyone who responds to him has to be sent off. He hits Koscielny in the face yet he gets away with it.

"I understand referee Mike Dean's decision to send Gabriel off. He was guilty and should not have got involved but why does Costa stay on the pitch after what he has done?

"Costa is always involved in provocation and he used the naivety of Mike Dean well. It is nothing to do with the strength of a referee. You expect him to make the right decision."

...indeed, opinions concerning Diego Costa could best be summed up in the following post-match remarks afterwards (quoting The Liverpool Offside's Saturday Open Thread):
Quote:

"Costa should have had two reds." – Wenger
"Costa was man of the match." – Mourinho

This just isn't going to be Chelsea's day...why, you may ask?
-Diego Costa was docked a 3-game match ban for his actions over the past weekend agst. Arsenal
-In addition, Arsenal's Gabriel Paulista had his own red-card rescinded...
-On top of that, Dr. Eva Carniero - once lambasted by Jose Mourinho for her actions 6 weeks ago - has left Stamford Bridge

...all in all, just another day at Stamford Bridge...

NBC Sports: Martinez - "Couldn't Be Happier With Everton Comeback"
Quote:

Monday night at the Hawthorns was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride for Roberto Martinez, as he watched his Everton side go 2-0 down to West Bromwich Albion, only to storm back with three goals in the final 35 minutes to win 3-2.

Speaking during his post-game television interview, the 42-year-old Spaniard was equally quick to laud his side’s slow start as he was to praise their inspired comeback.

Martinez, on the slow start and furious comeback: “We were very disappointed with the first-half play. We were off, every single individual, and that made it very difficult for us to get any sort of rhythm. When you look at the mountain we had to climb, especially with conceding the second goal, I couldn’t be happier with the character, the response, the resilience that we had. The attitude, because it would have been all too easy to lose our focus.”

Monday’s come-from-behind victory was the kind of game that last year’s Everton would have finished out by simply going through the motions. There’s a different air about them this year, one that resembles the 2013-14 season when they finished fifth. It’s also a massive boost that Romelu Lukaku is playing like a man on fire again, just as his did during that same on-loan season.
