28 years ago, Liverpool signed Newcastle's Peter Beardsley...here's 7 reasons why Reds' fans still love the Northeasterner..

(LFC Xtra)No.1: Stepping into Kenny's shoes as the stylish No.7 --Signed by Dalglish in 1987 as the natural successor to his treasured No.7 shirt, Beardsley had been adored by Newcastle United fans and would soon have the same admiration on the Kop. His eye for a pass, his slide tackles in tracking back and a tendency to score a memorable goal quickly made him an Anfield hero. No.2: Netting a goal on his Merseyside derby league debut --Following a slow start to his Anfield career, in which John Barnes quite rightly stole the limelight, Beardsley showed the Kop what he was made of with a moment of pure genius in a Merseyside derby. After being criticised for his below-par display in a Littlewoods Cup third round defeat to the Blues at Anfield, three days later Beardsley responded in the best possible way by firing an unstoppable Kop end volley to seal a 2-0 win. BBC commentator Barry Davies purred: "And he gets a kiss off a man in a blue striped shirt!" No.3: THAT sensational through ball to Aldo in the 5-0 demolition of Forest --Dalglish replaced the departing Ian Rush with a strikeforce of John Aldridge, Barnes and Beardsley - and no game epitomised just how good this trio were, more than the 5-0 destruction of Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Beardsley's sensational through ball to Aldo and the striker's subsequent magnificent finish are both still remembered to this day. No.4: His title-winning goal against Tottenham Hotspur --Liverpool sealed the 1987-88 league title with four games still to play by beating Spurs at Anfield as Beardsley scored the only goal of the game to clinch a 1-0 win. It certainly wasn't one of Liverpool's vintage displays that season but with the Kop full an hour-and-a-half before kick-off, and in the absence of the injured Barnes, Beardsley was the best player on the pitch as his goal sealed the title.

No.5: Anfield hat-trick against Manchester United --United were systematically thrashed in front of a baying Anfield audience as Kenny Dalglish's side put four past their rivals. Peter Beardsley stole the show by grabbing a hat-trick against the Red Devils, while Barnes chipped in with a goal that helped the Reds to the biggest win over United for 65 years. No.6: THAT goal in the 4-4 FA Cup Merseyside derby --In a game that has widely been recognised as one of the finest Merseyside derbies ever, Liverpool and Everton played out a thrilling 4-4 draw in the FA Cup fifth round replay at Goodison Park. Beardsley scored two goals in that game, but his second was simply sensational as he cut in from the right and smashed an unstoppable shot beyond the reach of Neville Southall. No.7: The Kop's emotional tribute to the man in blue Sadly, Beardsley was sold to Everton, despite later revealing in his autobiography he didn't want to leave Anfield. His return with the Blues saw Liverpool win 3-1. The Kop constantly sung his name and when the Reds went 3-0 up, a chant resounded, 'what a waste of talent!' Beardsley was the last player off the pitch at the end of the game when he was given a standing ovation by the Kop for his contribution in a red shirt.
