....well, at least we know who'll succeed "the Head" at Old Trafford, right?

- Quote:

(NBC ProSoccerTalk) Louis van Gaal was only appointed manager of Manchester United this summer, but he is already naming Ryan Giggs to be his successor. Giggs acted as manager for the final four matches of United’s season last year after David Moyes was sacked, and was kept on as an assistant to Van Gaal. Earlier in the week, Van Gaal commented on how quickly Giggs was learning as a coach, and even said the former-Manchester United star reads the game similar to one Jose Mourinho. Today the Dutchman come out and told MUTV that he believes Giggs will take over as the next manager at Manchester United. I expect that he [Giggs] will be the next manager after I am gone. Now I have the responsibility. He has tasks that he has to perform like the players. What he has to do, for me, he does it very well.”If anyone has the resume to lead Manchester United, it’s Ryan Giggs. The 41-year-old Welshman made over 900 appearances for United over his 24-year career at Old Trafford, the most in club history. He is the most decorated player in English history, winning 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League titles and four FA Cup trophies, among numerous other titles and awards. Earlier in the season it looked like there may have been some animosity between Giggs and Van Gaal, but those rumors went away as the team turned around its’ play. Van Gaal has a proven track record of winning at some of the biggest clubs in the world, so no matter their relationship, Giggs could not find many better to develop under.

....given Everton's defensive woes last year, this could help them a bit...

- Quote:
-
(NBC ProSoccerTalk) Louis Van Gaal‘s rebuild of Manchester United has been going on for 12 months now, but there seems no end in sight as the second-year Dutch manager is reportedly ready to sell defender Jonny Evans to Everton for a fee believed to be $12.5 million. Evans, who appeared in just 14 league games for Man United last season, has been at the club for nine years but feel severely out of favor with Van Gaal during his first season in charge of the club. For United, Evans’ departure would seem to signal another defensive signing — or, perhaps more — to come during the summer transfer window. Matteo Darmian was signed last week to strengthen the full back position, but no central defenders have been signed to this point. For Everton, Evans should be a starter from day one and tasked with fixing a leaky defense that conceded 50 goals last season. During the summer, stalwart center back Sylvain Distin left the club on a free transfer and signed with newly promoted side Bournemouth. If Evans does indeed leave Old Trafford, he’ll join a growing who’s who list of former United stars to be sold or leave on free transfers this offseason, which includes Robin Van Persie, Nani, and Tom Cleverley.

For the third straight time dating back to the beginning of last season, Swansea City faced Manchester United...and took all 3 points from Manchester United, again....

- Quote:
-
(NBC ProSoccerTalk) A pair of goals in six minutes gave Swansea City a stunning comeback as they down Manchester United by a 2-1 scoreline for the third straight time in Premier League play. Juan Mata had given Manchester United the lead shortly after halftime when Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew grabbed the game by its horns and set the Liberty Stadium alight after an hour. Off the opening whistle, with Swansea initially looking to play on the break, Manchester United held much of the possession in the opening 20 minutes. Mata came closest when he picked up a loose ball in the box and lashed it just wide of the near post. Swansea nearly caught United’s high back line off guard but Bafetimbi Gomis ripped his effort well over the bar on the 24th minute break. Moments later Gylfi Sigurdsson should have put the Swans one-up but he put his low shot just wide. The Swans continued their bright spell as a clearance by Sergio Romero went right to Jonjo Shelvey, and the midfielder tried an audacious chip that Romero just got his hands to. Gomis then hit the outside of the post with a strong shot under pressure. Rain began to pour down near the half-hour mark, and both sides looked bogged down as the first half wound down. But just three minutes into the second half, Manchester United went ahead with their third goal of the season. Luke Shaw burst down the left side and delivered a cross into the box. Wayne Rooney, waiting at the near post, stuck a foot out but missed the ball, and with the defenders converging on Rooney, Juan Mata was left alone at the far post to punch the ball home from close range. Manchester United settled in to preserve their lead, but Swansea had been dangerous on the counter, and Garry Monk brought on Ki Sung-Yeung to change the home side’s shape. It worked to perfection. They equalized on the hour mark with a brilliant header by Andre Ayew. A cross from the right came into the box with Ayew and Gomis out-gunning just one defender on the counter, and the Ghanan cannoned his header into the ground and over Sergio Romero’s head on the bounce. 2 - Man Utd's last two Premier League defeats from leading positions have both come against Swansea City (also 2-1 in Feb 2015). Thorn. (OptaJoe, 30 August 2015)With United back-pedaling, they stunned the Red Devils by taking the lead just six minutes later. Ayew got the ball down the right and sent a ball forward to Gomis one-on-two. The Red Devil defense somehow let it through, and Gomis poked a ball past Romero from a tight angle for the lead and his trademark panther celebration. Manchester United brought on Marouane Fellaini and began to hoof it forward, but the attacking intent seemed more out of desperation than inspiration. There was one last big chance, but referee Martin Atkinson waved away a penalty shout from Wayne Rooney after the English international was clean through on goal but waited too long before going down under pressure from Ashley Williams. The loss is Manchester United’s first of the season, but they remain without more than one goal in any game thus far and sit on seven points. Swansea, thanks to Gomis’s fourth goal in four games, move into the Premier League table’s top four.

....folks, you simply can't make this up....

- Quote:

(NBC ProSoccerTalk) What in the world is going on at Manchester United? Whatever is happening, “Fergie time” got a new meaning on Monday. According to multiple reports earlier in the day — like, well before noon ET — the two clubs had agreed a deal in which United would send De Gea, who has just one year left on his current contract and desperately wants a move back to his hometown, to Madrid for a fee of $44 million as well as Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas. It seemed a win-win for everybody involved after what has been a summer-long saga — United not only receive a hefty fee for a player in the final year of his contract, but they receive a capable replacement for said player, as well; and Madrid finally land a superstar to fill the one Galactico-less position in their starting XI, goalkeeper. Fast forward eight hours to Monday evening, and the Spanish transfer window has officially closed with the necessary paperwork for De Gea to complete his dream move having not been submitted before the transfer deadline in Spain. Thus, the deal is off and De Gea will remain at United until January, at least. This is a colossal blunder by chief executive Ed Woodward and Co., as Louis Van Gaal would be forced to either play a miserably unhappy player for the next four months, or continue to leave one of world’s best goalkeepers out of his gameday squad week after week until he can be sold at long last during the January transfer window. Madrid will, presumably, appeal to the Spanish football authorities to have the decision overturned.
....couldn't happen to a nicer team....

.....file this one under, "Sir, what the hell are you smoking now?"

(Fox Soccer) Phil Jones insists Manchester United can still win the league even though they are currently on their worst run of form in 26 years. United will stretch their winless run to nine matches in all competitions unless they defeat Swansea at Old Trafford on Saturday. The poor run of results has caused Louis van Gaal's team to drop out of the top four and exit the Champions League. United start 2016 in sixth position, some nine points behind leaders Arsenal, but Jones believes the Premier League is so haphazard in nature this year that he and his team-mates can still top the table come the end of May. "It's strange but the table shows that literally anyone can win the league this season. Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester, (Manchester) City, ourselves, Tottenham, Stoke, Watford... nobody seems to want to win it," the United defender told MUTV. "It only takes a good run of five, six, seven games and getting a few wins and it soon turns around. We're disappointed with the way we've played over the past few games, although we did well against Chelsea, but by no means are we out of (the title race). If we can put a few wins together we'll be right back up there." As Jones points out, there were signs of encouragement in United's performance against Chelsea on Monday. The match may have ended scoreless, but United put on a thrilling attacking display in the first half and deserved three points. The Red Devils did look wobbly at times at the back, though. David de Gea pulled off three fantastic saves to keep United in it and luckily for the hosts, Nemanja Matic shot well over when through on goal. But on the whole, United's defense has been solid this season. They have recorded 10 clean sheets in 19 games and Jones is proud of the achievement. "I was always taught as a youngster that if you keep a clean sheet you've got a great chance of winning the game and we've done that more often than not this season," he added. "Norwich and Stoke were games in which we conceded sloppy goals, but other than those matches we've been pretty solid. Everyone who's played has done their job and we hope we can carry that on and produce more clean sheets." Jones has had to spend most of the season on the substitutes' bench or in the treatment room thanks largely to the form of Chris Smalling and Daley Blind. Many were surprised when Van Gaal opted to play Blind, whose favorite position is in midfield, at the back, but former United left-back Denis Irwin thinks the former Ajax player has done a good job there this season. "The two center-halves have been our best players this year," said Irwin, who played 529 times for the club. "Chris Smalling has been getting all the limelight but I would say the unsung hero so far this season is Daley Blind, we haven't conceded that many and he has been a big part of that. He reads the game well and he is a very good footballer as well." Jesse Lingard is a doubt for Saturday's game because of a hamstring injury that has kept him out for the last three weeks. Long-term injury victims Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Marcos Rojo remain sidelined. Van Gaal tasted defeat in his first match as United manager against Swansea, and has been unable to take a point off the Welsh side since. The under-fire United manager says his team will be ready for the test that awaits them when the Swans come to Old Trafford on Saturday, though. "I have lost three against Swansea, and then you have to evaluate why you lost," Van Gaal said. "It is always like that."

....forget whatever the hell Phil Jones was smoking a while back; what the hell is LVG smoking now? The ways things are going at present for the Mancs', Liverpool will get a Premier League title before Manchester United does again...

- Quote:
-
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal "cannot imagine" it will take the club 26 years to become champions again. United went that long before winning the league under Sir Alex Ferguson in 1993, a barren run Liverpool will equal if they fail to finish top this season.
"I cannot imagine that shall happen," said Van Gaal. "We are in transition but we have the infrastructure and are going the right way." Liverpool and United meet in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday.
Van Gaal has won all three competitive meetings with Liverpool, including a victory at Anfield last season, since becoming United manager in 2014.
But a run of one win in eight Premier League games sees United in sixth spot, three places and three points above Sunday's hosts. If they fail to win at Anfield it will be United's worst run since 1989-90.
"You could still say we have underperformed because Manchester United has to be in the first three in the Premier League," said Van Gaal. "The same thing counts for Liverpool."
The Dutchman also said he was backing captain Wayne Rooney to improve an indifferent record at Liverpool. Having scored only once in 10 weeks from 17 October, Rooney has netted four goals in his past three games, including two in the 3-3 draw at Newcastle on 12 January.
But not since March 2012 has he scored in four consecutive club games and the 30-year-old does has generally struggled at Anfield, managing one goal in his 10 visits.
"Wayne has to break that record," said Van Gaal. "Then I am very pleased. When he scores, it makes it easy for me. I have put all my money on Wayne."

NBC Sports: Van Gaal - Champions League Hopes Rest On Europa League Victory

- Quote:
-
Louis Van Gaal has admitted Manchester United’s chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League are fading. Fast.
Speaking to BT Sport after their 2-1 defeat at Sunderland on Saturday, Van Gaal was blunt and forthright in his assertion that United may not be competing in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Now six points off the top four and having played a game more than most of their rivals, United’s chances of returning to Europe’s elite club competition look bleak, at best.
“It shall be very difficult now,” Van Gaal said. “Because we have given five points away, Chelsea and now. It is too much at this time.”
Asked about the pressure building on him, Van Gaal was adamant he will carry on with his job as normal and he also stated United’s best chance of featuring in the UEFA Champions League next season is to win the Europa League.
“I have to do my work and I do my work to my utmost best. I cannot do more and I shall prepare my players against Midtjylland 100 percent and I shall do that always… I think after this match it is the best route but it is also not so easy because some very good teams are participating in this event.”
United face the first leg of their Europa League last 32 tie against the Danish minnows on Thursday. If they don’t win that game, it could be curtains for Van Gaal with growing speculation around Jose Mourinho arriving to replace him at Old Trafford.
After spending $375 million on new players, finishing fourth last season and crashing out of the UCL at the group stages this season, Van Gaal’s time at United cannot be deemed a success.
This latest loss to Sunderland highlighted plenty of the flaws the Red Devils have as they dominated possession but failed to really get in-behind Sunderland and once again — just like in recent games against Newcastle, Southampton and Chelsea — a late defensive lapse cost them points.
...is it just me or is LVG smoking some high-grade Dutch weed there?
