The Guardian: Liverpool To Seal Mohamed Salah Signing From Roma

Liverpool expect to sign Mohamed Salah before the end of the week, with the winger to have a medical before completing a transfer from Roma for around £35m.

Salah left his native Egypt on Tuesday and is likely to have his medical at Liverpool’s Melwood base. Personal terms are believed to have been agreed with the 24-year-old.

The deal with Roma includes add-ons that could ultimately make Salah Liverpool’s record signing, eclipsing the £35m spent on Andy Carroll from Newcastle United in January 2011. Salah’s former club Chelsea will also be due a cut on the sale, which amounts to around £2.7m.

The transfer will end negotiations that began at the start of the month and included the Serie A club rejecting an initial £28m bid. With Jürgen Klopp determined to sign Salah, an increased amount was offered. The manager believes Salah can provide pace in the frontline, something that has been lacking when Sadio Mané is unavailable.

Signing Salah represents a case of second time lucky for Liverpool, who wanted the player in 2014 only to see him move to Chelsea from Basel. He struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge and joined Fiorentina on loan in 2015 before moving to Roma, also on loan, soon after. That became a long-term move last August and Salah has flourished in Serie A. Last season he scored 15 goals and assisted 13 others in 31 league appearances.

FWIW, this is a good get for the Reds; Salah will add a lot of pace to the attacking front, forcing opposing defenders to have to make some unpalatable choices (and that's when you pair Salah w/Sadio Mane on the other wing). I could also see him anchor a 4-2-Diamond formation (w/Firmino up front, Salah at the anchor and Mane plus Lallana/Coutinho/Origi on the wings); I could also see him playing right behind Daniel Sturridge if the Studge is up front in say a 4-4-2 formation.

All-in-all, a good deal that should erase some of the stink from the VvD debacle.
