Greetings, this is me speaking as an initiate of Death Herself, Death being La Santisima Muerte. i have been an initiate only for a few months but my knowledge is much older, for she had my interest for a while since before my devotion to the Mother of Death, she came to me in her "red aspect" in my dreams a few times, then i knew it was time. Anyways, this will not be a discussion on my personal spiritual ascent/path with La Santisima Muerte, but to bring forth Her background. Thus is the orgins: La Santisima Muerte has usually been covered and peppered with the religion of Catholicism and her original Aztec origins have been almost tainted. La Santisima Muerte's name, when she was still in the Aztec religion, was "Mictecacihuatl" and her male consort, or aspect if you will, is "Mictlantecuhtli". However, in some cases, some may connect Mictlantecuhtli with Senor La Muerte, and I do not agree nor do I disagree with that concept; same as some may connect Qayin's bride, the "Rose Queen", in whom I will not name. Anyways, this is very false; simply because La Santisima Muerte's ancient roots does not have any roses and thorns or have anything to do with Biblical references like Qayin & His Bride. Her mainstream feasts, like Senor La Muerte, occur on August 15 and last for usually that week, with her devotees paying their love & respect for their Death Goddess and/or God(referencing to Senor La Muerte). Her devotees are not really so anonymous in terms of their practices like SLM(Senor La Muerte) but they do have private devotees which are, again, not like SLM's private practices. She has many names and titles which are basically the same thing. Her most obvious is "La Santisima Muerte" or, as i like to call her, "LSM" for short. Her many other names, as mentioned before, are "Santa Muerte"(Saint Death), "The Skinny Lady", The Bony Lady", and many more. After the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, the worship of death diminished but was never eradicated. John Thompson of the University of Arizona's Southwest Center has found references dating to 18th-century Mexico. According to one account, recorded in the annals of the Spanish Inquisition, indigenous people in central Mexico tied up a skeletal figure whom they addressed as "Santa Muerte", and threatened it with lashings if it did not perform miracles or grant their wishes. Another sycnronism between Pre-Columbian and Christian beliefs about death can be seen in Day of the Dead celebrations. During these celebrations, many Mexicans flock to cemeteries to sing and pray for friends and family members who have died. Children partake in the festivities by eating chocolate or candy in the shape of skulls. Her "cult" is really independent and even hodgepodge to some, however, this is because she isn't dependent on a single book or bible, nor any church. Concerning her worship, it is very basic and easy to construct and so forth. Here are the items/offerings/etc. that i use in my practices: Candles(seven day candles are recommended, especially in spells, any candles work, though, they should be the same color as the robe that your talisman of LSM wears. Incense (whichever kind), sweets (usually chocolate), shot glasses of liquor (can be whiskey, tequila, wine, even rum, however, try to get the darker kinds, also avoid any liquor stronger than whiskey), siete machos (Folk-Mexican cologne and it is also LSM's favorite fragrance and I personally recommend anointing one's talisman with it), bread (avoid salted breads, or other salted offerings for that matter, because the Dead are intolerant to salted foods). I also recommend to "always" have a goblet or chalice or a glass cup of fresh water upon her altar.
