Wand Woods Acara Physical Properties: Wand Properties: Alder Physical Properties: Very dangerous to work with, so much so, most wandmakers refuse to work with it. Due to this, they are a relatively rare wand. But surprisingly, if a wandmaker manages to work the wand enough, they will find it is easy to carve intricate details on it, because alder wood is surprisingly elastic. Alder is classified as a hardwood, but one that is on the softer side of hardwoods. Wand Properties: This wand type picks a person who is helpful, considerate, and likable which is the complete opposite of the wood's physical properties (different from how most wand woods behave). The opposite nature of the wood leads it to be balanced, and a core is needed that too is opposite of the physical wood properties. It is a rare wand but lends itself to great non-verbal spell work and a match in an advanced witch or wizard. Apple Physical Properties: Harder wood to work with due to it's density, but it's smell, that is faintly sweet, is a better indicator of the wand's nature. It is an uncommon wand wood and a difficult wood to find in general. Apple wood has a tendency to burn easily when cutting. Apple is very dense and on the harder side of hard woods. Wand Properties: A bad match for those who are dark, it works best for those with high morals and ambition. Usually people with these wands are people persons with great charm, "well-loved" and "long-lived". Besides having great people skills, people with this type of wand are good with creatures and of course, linguistics and runes. Ash Physical Properties: Relatively easy to work with, and a commonly found wood. Easier to bend and form when using steam. It usually results in a wand that is more rigid or unyielding. Wand Properties: It also is good for healing spells and water spells, suited more as a light sided wand. It is not a wand made to be past down, being rather persnickety in who wields it especially if matched with a unicorn core. It matches a person who is not easily swayed from what they believe. Typically suited for a person who is stubborn and has a lot of courage, but is not arrogant nor over confident. Aspen* Physical Properties: A white wood that very much resembles ivory, especially when polished. It does usually require sanding due to the fact it can be rather rough around the edges. It is also a wood that doesn't split easily, thus managing to get the core in can prove to be a challenge. Beyond that, the wood is easier to work with and not to hard to find. Wand Properties: It is a wand that is made for duelers and warriors, especially those that use charms. A person matched with an aspen wand will always be a fighter. People with this wand like the texture can be rough around the edges, but can be refined if the time is taken to do so. They suit a person who has a strong mind, and a set path. Beech Physical Properties: Commonly found wand type. It is relatively easy to work with and responds well to steam treating. Wands are usually flexible and bendy. The physical appearance results in a very pretty wand. Wand Properties: Weak against fire spells but responds well to water spells. It is for those who are wise and open minded, not for the intolerant. Made for artistry folks and thus spells produced from it tend to be rather beautiful more so then powerful. Birch Physical Properties: Wand Properties: Blackthrone Physical Properties: Dark Brown to Black in color on the surface, and brown on the inside. The outer surface is rough to the point of thorny, so caution must be taken when initially working with the wood. The wood is rather strong and hardy. Wand Properties: A powerful wand made for fighters and warriors. It has a reputation of being a wand made for dark arts, but in reality, fighters of both a light and dark nature may be attracted to this wand. It is a wand made for hardship, those with this type of wand live hard and work hard. It is a wand suited for a more quiet a subtle person (a dark knight as opposed to the white knight) that has an odd loyalty to what they do and those of whom they respect. Black Walnut Physical Properties:Strong, Heavy, easy to split and usually easy to work with. Its rich dark color is well valued and it is known for its durability. Wand Properties: It is oddly tied with a person's inner nature. If there is inner strife or a lack of confidence, the wand does not work as well. It is not a wand made for a person who is dishonest, but one who is honest about both themselves and by what they say. For the self-aware owner it is a very strong wand in all types of charm work. Cedar: Physical Properties: The wood is soft and weak, but extremely durable and more resistant to decay the most other woods. Somewhat of a common wood to find. Wand Properties: Found with people who have strong characters and prize the value of family. But they can also be very protective of those whom they love and can be strong fighters when it comes to protecting family members (to the point they can be frightening) they are not wise to cross. People with this wand also have solid minds and perception. They are especially made for defensive magic. Cherry Physical Properties: Rare wand wood, but usually produce beautiful looking wands. Cherry is a widely used wood type that is relatively strong, flexible, stable and is easy to work with. Wand Properties:Made for those with strength of mind and a lot of self control. People with this type of wand tend to be more aware with their surroundings and are well in tuned with mother nature thus gravitating towards those who are good at herbology and/or potions. This wand tends to belong to people who on the surface seem weak but when the time is right, they can show great strength and will power. Beyond that it matches those who are generally peaceful and easy to work with. Chestnut Physical Properties: Tends to have a course texture that won't go away, but is easy to cut and split. The wood darkens considerably as it ages and the grain is oddly enough one that can show all types of patterns. Can be a little more expensive in cost then average. Wand Properties:Highly dependent on the core it is paired with. One thing it shares though, is usually it is held by colorful people who are interesting and entertaining and also some of the best at whatever their core leads them to do. It is also found regularly among those who are metamorphmagi. Cypress Physical Properties:Becomes more durable as it ages. Is a difficult wood to cut and can dull out knives used on it pretty quickly. Known for it's practically and high use. Wand Properties:A noble wand made for noble person, they are found in the hands of a person that is always willing to sacrifice themselves for others. They are usually great team players, thus strong in pair dueling. They are made for the brave, bold hero. Dogwood Physical Properties:Has a high density thus making it difficult to work with and shape at times. It also very hard and can be difficult on cutting tools, thus not made for fine details. Finding a matching core is difficult because it tends to expand and contract freely thus straining the core. It's properties also make it a wand that is difficult to break, due to its ability to absorb shock. Not a commonly found wood. Wand Properties: Belong to people who are exciting a bit odd and fun to be around. It is also suited to those who can be quiet the pranksters. People with this wand tend to produce the best spells under pressure and even though it can have a fun nature on the surface, people with this wand can be clever and inventive when they absolutely need to be. But due to their draw to boisterous people, they are dreadful with non-verbal magic (although if the spell is one that makes noise, this is the wand to have). People who become werewolves, oddly gravitate towards this wand due to their newly found abilities (not always). Ebony Physical Properties: Jet black color, but can be very hard to work with, cut and shape. It's very strong, stiff and dense thus its going to make an unyielding wand. It has poor stability with the changing of seasons. Makes very beautiful wands but is also very expensive to get and make. Wand Properties: Although it has a dark nature, it is a wand for people who are very independent, don't conform to the norms of society and just like to be themselves, no matter how odd. Usually people with this wand are good at dueling especially with transfiguration. People with this wand, like the wood properties, don't change their minds and stick heavily to their guns. Elder Physical Properties:Know as rarest wand wood of them all, although oddly enough it is a relatively easy wand wood to work with. Poor strength, soft weak wood. Wand Properties: Very hard to find a person that matches with the elder wand and it is the hardest wand wood to master. It is a very powerful wand, but only and absolutely only for the person who matches it and is extreme unique. Elm Physical Properties: Can be rather difficult to work with, but the usage of steam helps bend the wood to the proper placement. When cutting, be careful not to apply to much pressure since the wood can be rather fragile. Sanding during the wand making process is commonly needed. Wand Properties: A wand made for those who would quickly be described as sophisticated and great manual dexterity and a whole bunch of dignity. Known for its ability to produce elegant spells that can also at times cast quiet a punch. People with these wands might be elegant, but they also have strong personalities and opinions. Their spell work is precise to a T and errors are rarely made. English Oak Physical Properties:Best to collect woods between winder solstice and summer solstice. Generally easy to work with, and give good results. It's easy to find, durable, and relatively hard. Also responds well to steam bending. Wand Properties: Is a wand made for people who are connected with nature thus making it an ideal wand for Herbology and Care of magical creatures. People with this wand also tend to be loyal and have immense strength of character as well as some courage mixed in. People with this wand also tend to have a powerful intuition and should use that to their advantage. Fir Physical Properties: One of the strongest of the softwoods, doesn't respond as well to hand treating. Can at times blunt cutting tools. Low weight but stiff. Wand Properties: Nick names "survivor's wand" due to the fact owners have an uncanny ability to get out of mortal peril. Made for those with a strong mind and not for those who are indecisive or change their mind easily. People with this wand have a strong sense of purpose and can be at times intimidating. This wand performs best when using Transfiguration spells. Hawthorn Physical Properties: Easy to work and turn, splits easily. Is pretty strong, durable and rot resistant. Be careful when handling because the wood is known to have thorns, which needs some sanding. Wand Properties: Owners of Hawthorn wands are those that have a conflicting nature (much like the tree that produces them). Due to the Hawthorns opposing nature, they are good for healing magic (like the tree which blossoms have many healing properties), but are also good for curses and dark magic (also like the tree which naturally has thorns). They are a difficult wood to handle and not easy to master. People who use this wand need to match it well because it has a tendency to backfire if not in capable hands. Hazel Physical Properties: A very soft wood that is both easy to cut and sand. Almost always turns out a wand that is on the bendy side of flexibility. Wand Properties: Hazel wands tend to reflect the emotional state of their owner and are best suited for those whom keep them in check. They feed greatly of the energy of their owner, acting up when the owner is displeased or unhappy. This wand wood creates wands that are extremely loyal to their owner, so much in fact, they tend to "wilt" and stop working entirely for others. They posses an odd property of being able to detect water underground, thus they have a close affinity to water. Holly Physical Properties: Is a hardwood, but on the more flexible and less rigid of the hardwoods. Pretty easy to work with except for the fact that knots in the wood are common thus making it harder to work in some places, thus caution must be taking due to the changes within the own wood. Wand Properties: Relatively rare wand wood that is greatly effected and dominated by the type of wand core used with it. Usually it is paired with people one some sort of quest in their life. People with this wand can at times have issues with anger and be known for impulsive behavior, but on the flip side, it is also know for its protection qualities thus people with this wand tend to be proficient at defensive magic. Hornbeam Physical Properties: A hardwood that is very dense and tough, thus making it a harder wand to work but when it comes to turning, it is a very good wood to work with. It is excellent against wear and abrasion. Wand Properties: Wands of this wood are most suited for talented wizard who are driven and dedicated to one passion which can sometimes be mistaken for an obsession. Wands of this time adjust to their original owner quickly, matching their style and honor code. But in the hands of someone who isn't the owner, it will at best refuse to cast spells that don't match the original owner's actions, at worse, it won't work at all. Thus it is not a wand made to be passed down. Ivy Physical Properties: Wand Properties: Larch Physical Properties: Larch is a softwood, but shares hardwood properties (its like the tomato of woods). Not only that but due to the shared qualities it can make the grain texture rather odd throughout the wand, thus it will always make a rougher wand. It works well but can gum of cutting instruments. Wand Properties: Larch tends has a reputation of instilling courage and confidence into anyone who uses it. While it works for most people, when it is truly matched with a person who has some sort of hidden talent or purpose they do not realize until being matched with the wand, then their talents become clear and thus make a very powerful wand. Larch is warm in color and tends to cast fire spells better then most other wands. Laurel Physical Properties: Type of softwood, sometimes called Myrtle. Does not make a very strong wand although the weight of the wood is heavier. Wand Properties: Laurel is used to make Laurel Wreaths (the crown of leaves seen with ancient Greeks and the Olympics) which are a symbol for victory. This surprisingly describes the wand wood behavior. It is a wand that doesn't function with a lazy user, thus it can be won over in duels pretty easily. It can produce powerful and at times deadly magic and is suited for those that are on a quest for glory but have no desires in taking short cuts Maple Physical Properties: A type of hardwood that can produce very interesting grain textures thus creating a unique looking wand wood. Pretty easy to work but staining is to be avoided since it has a tendency to come out not looking so good. Wand Properties: Made for the adventurer and best suited to those with ambition. People with this wand are always on the move, they have to be, otherwise the wand will have lackluster performance. As the wand progresses with it's owner, it will literally change appearance, becoming brighter with each accomplishment. It is a wand for the highest of achievers. Pear Physical Properties: A hardwood, but hardwood of medium to lower density. One of the easiest woods to work with especially in wand making. Very good and easy to carve designs on it and does respond to steam bending (which also can change the color of it). Wand Properties: Wands that are made for those that are light sided and is never found in the hands of a dark wizard, a wand that doesn't perform dark spells really at all. It is made for those of whom are warm of heart, wise and generous. They are usually found in those of whom are very well respected and popular (much like apple). They, like the people matched with them are known for their resilience and being able to make it through anything and looking good as they do it. Pine Physical Properties: Pine is one of the most common woods used in building and in wandlore. It's easy to find and easy to work with, cut, strong enough to handle some damage but also flexible (due to it being a softwood). It also is easy to paint or color. Wand Properties:Owners of this wand type are suited for those who are independent and individualist. They tend to work best for those who are creative and adapt faster to new spells, like their masters. People with this wand are said to lived long lives although they also tend to be described more as loners and mysterious. They are also very sensitive to non verbal magic. Poplar Physical Properties: Very easy to work with due to the fact they are very soft. The wood can naturally be stained but it wont hold paint for long so like the wand property, the wood that is cut is what the final wand will look like. When cut it can leave fuzzy edges which require sanding to make a smooth wand surface. Wand Properties: People with this wand type are known for their integrity. They suit honest people who have a clear moral vision. Some of the traits of people with this wand are reliable, consistent, strong, and powerful. A person with a poplar wand tend to be described as "real" in they don't try to hide who they are from others, what you see is what you get. Reed Physical Properties: Different from all other woods in that it doesn't come from a tree or even a shrub type (so it is neither a soft or a hard wood). Mileage can vary when working with this wood in that different reeds can have different properties from each other. Wand Properties: A wand who belongs to a person that is loyal and true to their word. People with Reed wands are protective of their friends, bold, and surprisingly good at public speaking. They know the right words to say at the right times and are normally respected by many and disliked by few. People with this wand type are also drawn to water spells. Rosewood Physical Properties: Wand Properties: Rowan* Physical Properties: A very durable wood type that can withstand the elements. It is relatively easy to work with and is mid-range on the hardness scale. It can be glued well and also finishes well. Wand Properties: They are the most protective of wands and perform hard to break defense spells (a Rowan wand user performing defenses on say the school is a good idea to have). Dark witches and wizards are said to not own one, and they likely wont perform dark magic at all. normally they are placed with those whom are clear headed and pure hearted. They are a very powerful wand and people with this wand tend to be great duelers (but don't profess to be). Silver Lime Physical Properties: Wand Properties: Spruce Physical Properties: Wand Properties: Sycamore Physical Properties:This wood is similar to Maple, with heartwood streaks running along it. At some points, it may give off a "freckled" appearance and has been known to suffer from insectoid rot. It works easily, although the integrain may be hard to work with, it works poorly with Steam Bending. Much better to be done by hand to produce a better looking wand. Wand Properties: Sycamore is best suited to those with a healing background, as many of the things extracted from it are used in healing. However powerful the wand might be towards healing tendencies, it will prefer a bearer who is confident, strong and outgoing rather than a mundane bearer and may combust if allowed to become "bored". Vine Physical Properties: Wand Properties: Walnut Physical Properties:The Walnut is a hardy and tough wood that is hard to work with, Often black with straight lines, The Walnut tree has been known to survive for up to 200 years, depending on the tree. Yet, beneath the hard, beautiful look, it is known to produce Juglone, a toxin which kills other vegetation up to a 60ft radius. Wand Properties: Like it's wand, the bearer of the Walnut wand is someone who is ambitious, aggressive and passionate, a person to be reckoned with, despite their light or dark allegiance. Often unyielding and stiff, The wand is more suited to dark magic, like the tree from which it came, the wand thrives with a bearer with no conscience. Flexibility Wand Flexibility Degree of adaptability and willingness to change possessed by the wand-and-owner pair. This is just a surface description of flexibility, it describes how much a PERSON might or might not be willing to change but also how a wand is. So say you hand the wand down to a family member, its felxibility is a determining factor in it's temperment passed to someone else. In reality it describes more about the wand's temperment then the person's temperment. This works in conjuction with the wood and the core of the wand. Order goes from most flexible to least flexible Quite, Surprisingly, Fairly, Slightly, Very, Reasonably Flexibility Types: Bendy Swishy Springy Flexible Supple Pliant Brittle Hard Solid Stiff Rigid Yielding Unyielding Unbending -------------------------------------------------- Bendy - Bendy wands are the easiest to influence of all the wand types, they can be bent without breaking but tend to stay there until bent again. Mercurial (livlely and quick, quick to mood changes) is a word that describes those with bendy wands. Usually seen only in the softwoods, they require a lot of bending in the making stages. Swishy - A little bit over the top and tend to belong to people who are fun-loving and social. Adapt to situations easily but are very posh about their actions. Slightly Swishy wands are less flexible less easy to influence, very swishy are easier to influence. Have to subject to steam bending quiet a bit. Can tell if swishy if you wave the wand around and it makes a very autiable swish sound. Springy - Remarkable ability for people to hop back into place and adapts easily to influences. But people with this wand have a central core of beliefs that they will ALWAYS return to. Spring wands can be made by bending the wood and letting the wood form back to it's original shape. They can easily be found by when they bend they always pop back quickly to their original form. Flexible - capable of being bent without breaking, willingly yield to influence of others, Flexible adapts quickly and easily to outside forces. Supple - easy to bend, or glue, but it can placate people. Bends off of its own choice. May not be entirely loyal to people but it can give off the image that it is. People with this wand (and the wands themselves) tend to adapt easily but they need time to convince themselves to change. *supple wood tends to come from the natural property of the wood and how you cut the wood as well as how it is influenced by the core. Pliant - Influence is the keyword with pilant, they can be influenced to good or evil, influenced or yield to force or pressure. People with pliant wands can adapt easily to change, but they must be convinced by other people to change (they don't tend to change on their own). *Pliant Wands comes from working the wood, with your hands |

Wand Length Length serves many purposes, while at face value it might seem a taller person would possess a larger wand and a smaller person would weld a smaller length wand, this view really only takes into consideration on what the wands dynamics would work with, not the personality. Thus basing wand length off of a person's height is considered an archaic estimation of wand length (for the most part). Wand Length instead tend to draw on a persons personality, specifically whether they an extrovert or an introvert. Those with longer wands favor a more dramatic type of magic, filling the room as an extrovert. While those with shorter wands tend to be more elegant, tidier, and more reserved with their magic, thus being on the more introverted side. A large majority of wands will be between 9" and 14". Wands that are under 8" or 16" and over are very rare and follow a different set of rules. Abnormally short wands (under 8") tend to match people whose character is lacking something, or missing certain personality traits that most people have. Very large wands (16" and over) ARE usually tied to a persons physical height usually going to people who are very tall (as in over 8' such as half giants). Even so this is more so for practical purpose then personality purpose. Wands also come in quarter sizes (usually more intricate measurements are not used). They can be found in 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4". Length and Arithmancy There is also a school of thought that ties Arithmancy to wand lengths. To find your wands meaning you add all the individual digits of both the full inch and partial inch. For example.... 12" - would be 1+2 = 3 10 1/2" - would be 1+0+1+2 = 4 Heres a chart simplifying the math for people who dont like math...
* A wand that is purely 11" is a special case being that 11 is a master number.

Wand Cores Dragon Heartstring Phoenix Feather Unicorn Hair Dragon Heart String General Personality description: Produce wands with the most power but also the most temperamental thus making it more prone to accidents. They learn quickly and have a stronger bond with their owners. Also tends to be easier turning to dark arts. But there's lot of different species of dragons thus each species has their own special quirks to them listed below: * Antipodean Opaleye - most beautiful dragons, not aggressive, easy to train. Peaceful, Artistic, Easy going (Beech, Cherry) * Chinese Fireball - shares its territory with other dragons, fast, clever. Share well with others, tend to rush through things, but very clever. (Cypress) *Common Welsh Green - subdued, avoids human contact, issues fire in narrow jets, distinctive/melodious roar. Quiet, reserved, musically inclined. *Hebridean Black - lots of space, tough skinned. Individuals, Independent, don't work well in groups (Blackthrone, Ebony). *Hungarian Horntail - loud, scary, fast, high breathing temps, vicious. Made for fierce people who are fierce and excel at dueling (Aspen, Laurel). *Norwegian Ridgeback - Not as hostile, venonmous fangs, affinity with eating water creatures, eats large mammals, females are more scary then the males Trait: Wandcore differs in males then females (rare for a core or wand wood), both have an affinity with water, but women with this core tend to be more leadery, head of family type, while males tend to be more laid back follower types. *Peruvian Vipertooth - smallest, fastest, conceal itself well, likes to eat people Trait: Good for nonverbal magic, hiding spells and best fit for those who are metas (but can also fit non metas). People tend to be quick on their feet and in their mind, but hide in the background. *Romanian Longhorn - have two long horns it likes to gore its prey, bulky/large, although medium sized dragon. Traits: Not often seen in wandlore, it pretty much just amplifies the effects given to dragon heartstring *Swedish Short-Snout - very hot, firey breath, extremely agile while flying, less agile on the ground, attractive skin, not seen often by humans Traits: Made for those with a fire affinity and or those who are great fliers, your quidditch stars and the like, for the jocks among us. *Ukrainian Ironbelly - largest dragon type, slower then other dragons, crushes dwelligs where it lands Traits: Usually will be seen with those who have 12" wands or larger, tend to have more grand spell casting, more outgoing types of people, but slower wand actions. How to Cut and Preserve Dragon Heart String Chordae tendineae (aka "heart strings") are cord-like tendons located in the heart that keep blood from reversing through ventricles in the heart. 1)Cut with scalpel 2) Preserve in alcohol/water mixture 75% alcohol at minimum, 95% at most ( longer term the less alcohol). Doesn't preserve color well. If its only a few days, wrap the heart in cloth, place it in a box and surround it with ice. If its much longer, you have to cut the heart strings out and preserve them in the alcohol mixture. 3) Take the heartstrings and remove them from jar and lay on the towel. 4) Dry with Aero Siccitas, if you don't make sure they are dry the moisture left over will rot out the the core and the wand wood which will render the wand useless after placement. Phoenix Feather Phoenix feather is the rarest of the supreme wand cores. - Harry Potter and Voldemort had this wandc ore Phoenix feathers have the greatest range of magic and can be like the bird they come from, independent and difficult to tame. This is often a wand that is more suited to leaders rather then followers (or people who aren't in the group at all). They are also very pickey and hard to win over so if you fight and beat someone with this type of wand, it may not perform magic on you especially if you're no match for it. Now each phoenix feather takes on the personality of the phoenix it comes from. The phoenix that are not domesticated tend to provide more independent wandcores while feathers from a domesticated phoenix are less independent. Phoenix feather don't need to be preserved unlike dragon heartstring. It is also more hardy then a unicorn tail hair. The best time to get a phoenix feather is when the bird is either molting or going through a rebirth (which tend to happen together). Unicorn Tail Hair Edited by sockpuppie, Today, 12:38 AM.

Helpful Potions Wood Morphing Adhesive What it does: Use when doing wand repairs or filling core holes or things of that nature, you want to use this adhesive over others because it tries to naturally mimic the effect of the wood AND its properties, not just stick things together. The magic channels through the wand much easier. Using other adhesives might actually hurt the wand or render it useless. Ingredients: *casein, paste not liquid (2 cups) *Water *caterpillar (3 caterpillars) *Mandrake Leaves (1 handful) *Boomslang Skin (10-12 inches) Instructions: 1) Measure out about 2 cups of casein about and put in the cauldron. 2) Put cauldron on a low heat so it is warm to the touch but NOT hot, not hot enough to burn. 3) While waiting for the cauldron to warn slice the Mandrake Leaves, boomslang skin and Mandrake leaves. 4) Using a mortar and pestle, feel free to further grind down the caterpillar, madrake leaves and boomslang skin together. 5) Put the Caterpiller, mandrake leaves, and boomslang skin mixture in with the casein and start to stir in a clockwise direction. 6) Add a little bit of water if the mixture gets to hard to mix. But don't add to much to the point its runny or watery! 7) There is no specified amount, just until the ingredient mix together until they make a nice paste. *Note we did not make the Casein, we might in a future lesson, but Casein is a paste like substance usually used to make wood glues or used in glues as a base. Casein is made from heating milk and adding vinegar and baking soda to it. Edited by sockpuppie, Today, 12:40 AM.

Indepth Wand Wood/TreeNotes Wandwood trees tend to have magical properties in themselves (that typically match the qualities of the wand wood), and also tend to be guarded but Bowtruckles (not all exhibit easy to identify magical properties so Bowtruckles are key). If Bowtruckles are guarding a tree, this is a wand baring tree, Bowtruckles have an innate sense of magical trees. Not all trees produce wand woods, only blessed magical trees produce wands they are deemed wand trees (sort of how not all humans are wizards, only a select few). Bowtruckles -Camo with trees, stickman made of bark and twigs -Have 2 long sharp fingers on each hand -Peaceful except when a person threatens its tree. -- It will use its fingers to claw out peoples eyes who try this - If you want to harvest wood from a tree, you need woodlouse (also known as ROLY-POLY or pill bugs) or fairy eggs to distract = You don't want to HURT Bowtruckles, they are beneficial in protecting the tree and they help make it easier to identify wand producing trees. Aspen Wand Properties: It is a wand that is made for duelers and warriors, especially those that use charms.A person matched with an aspen wand will always be a fighter. People with this wand like the texture can be rough around the edges, but can be refined if the time is taken to do so. They suit a person who has a strong mind, and a set path. It can be a good wand for those that have an affinity with fire. Physical Properties: A white wood that very much resembles ivory, especially when polished. It does usually require sanding due to the fact it can be rather rough around the edges. It is also a wood that doesn't split easily, thus managing to get the core in can prove to be a challenge. Beyond that, the wood is easier to work with and not to hard to find. They are deciduous tree thus making them a hard wood although it tends to live in areas with trees that are evergreen, it has very soft wood compared to most hard wood trees. Wand Tree: Oldest tree in an Aspen grove is considered the wandtree. It's special because it can change with time. The grove needs to be a fairly large on. No protected by bowtruckles and you can find them all over the muggle world. Older colonies produce stronger aspen wands. ----------------------------------------- Aspen Trees grow in a different way from most trees. They come from single seeting much like grass and spread via the root system. Thus while a tree may die, the colony survives. They are resistant to fire, and because of their root systems, they repopulate after fires far quicker then most trees. To find the oldest tree, having a bowtruckle can help you, although they dont protect them. You can also look for the tree with the larger trunk, bore a small hole into it and count the rings. The tree with the most rings, is the oldest. Fun fact; Elk eat the bark of the tree during pregnancy because it provides mild pain relief. It is also an ingredient in Asprin which is a pain reliever. Elder Elder - Elderberry (shrub/small tree) Rarest Wand wood, harder to master said to be extremely unlucky Physical Properties: Known as rarest wand wood of them all, although oddly enough it is a relatively easy wand wood to work with. Poor strength, soft weak wood. Wand Properties: Very hard to find a person that matches with the elder wand and it is the hardest wand wood to master. It refuses to work with anyone or anything that isn't it's perfect match, both person wise and core wise. Even for people that match the wand, it is known to backfire often and lose loyalty, it also has a reputation of being unlucky. Owners of elder wood wands are usually also suited for Rowan wood wands. Wand Tree: Hard to find them, normally not protected by Bowtruckles, nor do they outwardly appear to have any magic to them (unlike most other trees which have at least some way of finding them). Fir *Physical Properties: One of the strongest of the softwoods, doesn't respond as well to hand treating. Can at times blunt cutting tools. Low weight but stiff. *Wand Properties: Nick named "survivor's wand" due to the fact owners have an uncanny ability to get out of mortal peril. Made for those with a strong mind and not for those who are indecisive or change their mind easily. People with this wand have a strong sense of purpose and can be at times intimidating. This wand performs best when using Transfiguration spells. *Christmas Trees: you may know firs for their use as Christmas Trees! They were used in pagan rituals surrounding the winter solstice (december 21 and 22) while the Romans used Fir trees to decorate temples for the festival of Saturnalia (which went from december 17 to december 23) But to connect with actual Christmas, it's tied down to Martin Luther in 16th century. He was walking through the woods and was awe struck by the beauty of a fir tree he found out under the stars. This reminded him of Jesus so he cut the tree down, set it up in his home and decorated it. *Wand Tree Properties: The Fir tree that Martin Luther came upon was likely a wand Fir tree. They tend to be prettier and humans are more attracted to them (like the Veelas of the tree world). Also when chopped down, the tend to live longer. There not all that rare and can be found in muggle and wizarding populations. Holly Physical Properties: It can be a hardwood or a softwood depending on the type of Holly used. It is Pretty easy to work with except for the fact that knots in the wood are common thus making it harder to work in some places, thus caution must be taking due to the changes within the own wood. The berries are toxic to humans and the leaves can be prickly which can be difficult when trying to get the wood. It is excellent for carving. Harry Potter had a Holly wand. Wand Tree: Bring MEN goodlck and protection and it can be difficult for a woman to locate the wand bearing trees without the help of a man (Ivy is opposite). Men are drawn to these trees. Rowan Most protective of wands, performs hard to break defense spells (a Rowan wand user performing defenses on say the school is a good idea to have). Dark witches and wizads are said to not own one. Placed with clear headed and pure hearted, but still a very powerful wand and people with this wand tend to be great duelers (but don't profess to be). Wand wood producing trees are not always "renamed" like Rowan, but Rowan when it is a "magical" tree is called a Wiggentree. Bark is used in Wiggenweld Potions Anyone who touches these trees will be protected by dark creatures (at least the magical Rowans). Willows Willow Wood Properties Wood with healing power that usually seeks owners who tend to be unsecure about their gifts and abilites, although they try to hide it. Usually it is not the wand wood for the super brave, but instead those who are eager and needing to learn and have great potential. They make a beautiful wand and also lend themselves to non-verbal magic. The whomping willow, is a wand wood producing willow. Clearly it IS magical. I mean, how many trees can beat the snot out of people with ease? It's magic IS identifiable on its own. You don't see Bowtruckles guarding it because Willows, dont need the protection and beat Bowtruckles up just the same as they do humans. The key to willow wood is they are often insecure, they have a weak spot. They try to hide it so others wont take advantage of them. As some of you know, the Whomping Willow has a knot at the base of its trunk (as do all wand bareing willows). If you can GET to the knot and press it, it'll make the tree basically freeze for about a minute. So, if you wish to collect some wood from it, you need to probably do it with another person or have some way to keep pressing the knot and freezing it. You can get a long stick and try to press it, oppugno a conjured animal, a physical something to hit the knot with. Inflecto telum conjures an arrow that hits the know and can keep it frozen for awhile. Just remember to REMOVE the arrow, otherwise the tree will have no way to protect itself! Then you can prune the tree as normal. Also a note, these wand trees are VERY rare, and the ministry has to keep a watch on them (cut down or move ones that are found growing in muggle areas). The Whomping Willow is one of the very few known wand trees of its type. Edited by sockpuppie, Today, 12:52 AM.

Hardwood Vs. Softwood Whether a wood is hard or soft can be a strong indicator of the type of wand you might be getting (it usually ties in with the flexibility). Beyond that, it can effect how you make the wand, which we will go into next club meeting. So anyways the difference between hardwoods and softwoods does not actually come from how tough the wood is. Hardwoods tend to come from deciduous trees - thus they drop their leaves every year. Softwoods come from trees that are known as conifers and do not drop their leaves. Conifers being trees that produce cones (aka evergreens) But Decidous trees tend to produce woods that are more dense, meaning that they ARE usually tougher. Softwoods tend to produce your softer woods. Hardwoods tend to be heavier and darker in color, while your softwoods are lighter both in weight and color. Some softwoods include pine, spruce, cedar, fir, larch, redwood, and yew. Some hardwoods include ash, aspen, birch, cherry, ebony, oak. Usually with your hardwoods you will see that they gravitate towards people who are more set in their path and it is difficult to change their mind. While softwood wands tends to take on people who are open minded, softwood wands also are more likely to feed off their owners emotional state (Hazel, Yew snd Fir are both stronger then many hardwoods, thus you'll notice that people with these types of wands tend to exhibit that inability to change their mind. Willow on the other hand is a softer hard wood that ends up being a wand that matches with open minded people. Cherry on the other hand completely differs from the trait of hardwoods (it is a harder hardwood) and takes on people who are easy to work with and easy going. Beech is also another hard hardwood that goes against the grain and it is specifically made for open minded individuals and NOT for those who are intolerant. Larch is like the tomato of the wood world as it fits under hardwood and softwood definitions (thus being a reason why it depends on the type of wand core with it). Remember softwoods and hardwood wands do not always fit within the typical traits. While they can be an indicator of the type of the wand characteristics, it is only a guide to the typical behavior, not the rule for all wand woods! Differences in Wand Creation Hard - harder to cut, take more muscle, harder to shape, usually harder on cutting instruments Usually heavier, usually harder to repair Usually more expensive to grow cause hardwood trees grow slower. Usually darker colored woods, don't go well with paint, but on their own, tend to be prettier in color! Can be more, tempermental, remember, these are magical wands Steam can work with some woods like Ash, Beech, Elm, English Oak Soft - usually easier to carve intricate details, a lot easier to repair Easier to find the wood since softwood trees tend to grow faster then hardwood. Lighter Usually less rough on you cutting instruments More likely to tear out Hold paint better But bare in mind, easier to cut =/= easier to work with Softwoods - Cedar, Fir, Pine, Redwood Hardwoods - Ash, Birch, Cherry, Mahogany, Maple, Oak Edited by sockpuppie, Today, 12:30 AM.

Elder Wand Wand Wood Elder - Elderberry (shrub/small tree) Rarest Wand wood, harder to master said to be extremely unlucky Physical Properties: Known as rarest wand wood of them all, although oddly enough it is a relatively easy wand wood to work with. I need to make one LARGE distinction here. There are wands made of Elder Wood, and then there is the Elder Wand, which are different. The Elder wand was made of Elder but it works a little bit differently from other Elder Wood wands. It's alligence is gained by beating the prior owner in a duel, it is the only elder wand wood that works in this manner. People like to say that elder wood is the most powerfull. I think it's bullshit, the most powerfull wand wood is the one that fits you the best. Wand Tree: Hard to find them, normally not protected by Bowtruckles, nor do they outwardly appear to have any magic to them (unlike most other trees which have at least some way of finding them). Wand Core What wand used Thestral Tail Hair? - Elder Wand Which is what we're going to talk about the parts of the elder wand. What is odd about this wand is both its wood and core, are really no good in wandmaking, and all attempts to replicate the elder wand have failed. Putting threstral and elder wood together only worked one time and that was the elder wand. So Thestral Tail Hair Cores specifically take on some of the traits of the creature it comes from (they also take on a little bit of the exact creatures they came from's personality). Property Speculation: Once a Threstral is trained they can be very good allies to a wizard. Threstrals are also tied to those that have seen death. It is speculated that the whole realignment on death quality of the elder wand came fro the Thestral core. Working with Threstral Tail hair: It is extremely rare and extremely unstable (more so then veela hair). It is hard to work with and has only (at least from what I've heard and read) only been successful in one wand. Still the truth is it HAS worked at least once, with wandlore, some of it is learning from those before you, but some of it is trying new things. Edited by sockpuppie, Today, 12:54 AM.
