Acacia knew it would happen soon. Kestrith was getting more and more irritated by the moment. Thankfully Petrinth had kept away from the Gold as the days passed. Acacia had been expecting it, but that didn't mean that she was ready when the moment came.

Kestrith had been attempting to sun herself in the snow, but it wasn't working. She didn't like the way the sun reflected off the snow, it was almost blinding. She cleared a spot with her tail, revealing the half-dead grass below. But she just couldn't get comfortable. They really needed to find a place, and soon.

Suddenly, Kestrith spied something moving at the edge of the forest. The sun was setting, sending bright streaks of color across the sky. The animal was surprisingly large, something she'd never seen before. Though she didn't think they normally came this close to people. She launched herself at it, and at that moment, Acacia knew what was happening.

Only the blood! Acacia commanded the Gold. Kestrith grumbled wordlessly, but after more insisting on Cia's part, the dragoness bit into the neck of the creature. Acacia couldn't remember if it was an elk or a moose, she never could get her animals right. Kestrith drained the creature, then looked for another. It had to be something big, anything smaller than a deer she could consume in one bite. Ah, there was another. She could smell it. She went airborne, following the scent of deer to a clearing. She landed on a large one, killing it on impact and sucking it near-dry as well.

Then she let out a loud roar, a challenge to the males. It was her time to Fly!

As her mind started melding with Kestrith's, one final thought crossed the Goldrider's mind. Kestrith had Risen first. This made her Weyrwoman.

Orlynth had been trailing the Gold, keeping an eye on her. He favored her more than the bolder Petrinth, her more mild manner made the small Bronze more comfortable.

That day was one of the few he wasn't to be found near her, for he was with His hunting down the covey still. As the bellow sounded, his head snapped up, and a low growl rumbled from deep in his throat. Instantly, D'rius leapt to his shoulders, and the King launched himself upwards into the sky, tracking the sound to its beautifully glowing source. He dropped His off near the Mansion, then darted after her, dropping onto a large bull elk and draining it for the energy before again taking to the sky, bugling to his Queen. She was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen, her hide glowing brilliantly as she darted ahead of him, and he crooned approvingly to her, encouraging her to test him, and any others who might show, to their very limits. Only that could decide who was best to lead their Weyr at her side, to sire her children.

And he was determined to BE that mate, to take this beauty and claim her for his own. He'd ignored the lesser females who Rose before her, leaving them to be Chased by the others. Only this Queen was worthy of his attention, his energy.

Petrinth roared out, sending Taylor into a frenzy. She was as heated as her Queen in the moment she knew she was to remain Jr. Weyrwoman until something major happened. How could she have lost to that pair? How had Petrinth not risen before her? She felt her anger rising as Petrinth began to hiss and tense up. She knew the thoughts in her mind had to have been more Petrinth's than her own. "Oh no...." Taylor said out loud. "Petrinth!" she cried, running outside to her beast who was watching her sister leap to the sky. It was in an instant Taylor wrestled with her dragon's mind, who's eyes were whirling red-purple as she mounted. She took one last look at the Gold, feeling Petrinth's instinct to fight rising, and took to the skies in the opposite direction. "Between! Now!" she commanded, disappearing into the abyss to some other place in the mountains to pass the time.

Junreth was being lazy for the moment, until the cries of both Queens were heard. He readied himself, launching into the air as the Golden beauty shot to the skies. As a Blue he was quick, knowing he could catch up...but for how long? No matter. He crooned out to the Queen as he flew along side his brother, feeling his wings carry him higher and higher, darting after the glowing frenzy before him. He felt the pangs of lust rushing through him as he darted in the patterns she chose. He would not leave this Flight until he had flown his very best!

A Bronze showed himself first. This one, this was one she knew well. She knew he preferred her over her sister. Speaking of the Garnet... Kestrith tensed up when she saw Petrinth rise into the air, relaxing slightly as the other Queen vanished between. At least now there was no competition. Well, the males had to compete for her, but that was different.

A Blue? Did a Blue really think he could out-fly a Bronze? Especially when this Bronze already had the favor of the Queen. Perhaps that made it unfairly in Orlynth's favor, but it was true. She simply knew him better, and liked him more. But there was always the possibility of any male winning this contest. Only time would tell.

Orlynth glanced over at the Blue and rumbled, admiring the smaller male's spunk and determination and angling his wing downwards in an acknowledgement of it. He then moved to angle off to Kestrith's right side and slightly behind her, keeping a respectful distance but also making sure she couldn't forget he was there.

D'rius was silent as he stood in the hallway outside Acacia's room at the Mansion, leaning back against the wall. His eyes were closed, his mind connected to his Bronze's, seeing things through the dragon's eyes. The Golden beauty glowed before him, the air whipped under his wings and he could feel that Orlynth's tail was shifting slightly, keeping the King balanced as he flew. His Bonded's respect for Junreth slid clearly through their link as the Blue showed himself, then slipped away, hidden under his lust for Kestrith, the Queen he desired above all other females.

Kestrith changed direction suddenly, flying south over a few houses. She hadn't gotten very far before Acacia was forcing the Gold to fly north again, over the forest, but there was no guarantee that she had been lucky enough to be undetected. Of course, that was something they'd have to worry about later. She flew higher, then slowed, and flipped backwards, spiraling toward the ground. She flared her wings just before impact with the trees, catching a few of the topmost branches with her claws and tail. She turned her head, glancing back at the two males who were chasing her, wondering for just a moment where the other Kings were.

But that thought was only in her mind for a moment, as the thought brushed into Acacia's consciousness, then she turned toward the Bronzerider. D'rius, she'd gotten to know him well over the last year. She trusted him to be a good leader. He was already a good friend. And she was certain that Kestrith would pick the Bronze over the Blue. But she had to wait for Kestrith to make her choice.

The Bronze angled his flight slightly, following his Queen but concerned when she moved over inhabited areas. They were not supposed to be seen, he thought, flicking his tail slightly, unsure but determined to follow her regardless. He would not let his uncertainty show, for that was weakness, and in this, weakness was not allowed. He glanced at Junreth, then looked back to Kestrith, shifting his flight to dive downwards as she did, angling up slightly before so as to be out of her way when she came back up, settling back again to her right and behind her.

D'rius sensed more than saw her turn towards him, and his gaze moved, angling towards her. The odd double vision he got, Kestrith's image overlaying Acacia's, confused him for a moment, but it quickly faded as Orlynth's determination to impress the Gold and prove himself worthy to her filtered through his mind once more.

Junreth bugeled out to his Queen, he felt his wings tiring, he could not hold out much longer like his Bronze brother. He dipped and dove with a quickness, following behind the beauty with his heart and wings aching for her. He gave it a burst of speed, trying to catch up to his brother, putting himself neck and neck. He was trying his hardest, knowing deep down it would be futile.

Kestrith looked over her suitors once more, slightly surprised that the other Kings had not given Chase. But she knew her Hatchlings would be strong ones. Hers would be the most numerous of all, and she would watch her Queen daughter become a great dragoness.

Oh, but she was getting ahead of herself. She roared one last time, her decision almost made. But she would give them one last chance to impress her before she told them her choice.

Orlynth was quiet, but his determination to win showed in every beat of his wings, every line of his powerful frame, gleamed in the whirling red/purple that was his eyes at this moment. She WOULD be his, as much as he admired the Blue's grit. It was how it had to be, for their future to be assured on this world. They had to prove to the others, especially bossy Petrinth, that Kestrith WAS the only one fit to lead their Weyr.

As she roared, he angled his flight, able to see her more clearly, and rumbled his appreciation of her beauty and cunning, her strength. She would be a good leader, and her children would be strong and healthy.
