Shattered Empire - a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic RP
Well over a thousand years ago, the northern reaches of the land that would come to be known as Equestria was known as the Crystal Empire. It was a harsh land, with fierce winters and tepid summers. Life managed to flourish thanks to their prized possession- the Crystal Heart. A powerful artifact, the Crystal Heart resonated with the ambient emotions of the ponies who lived in the empire. It's energies converted their bodies and their crops into a crystalline structure, making them well-adapted to their harsh environment.
A little over one-thousand years ago, the Crystal Empire vanished into thin-air. King Sombra, the despotic unicorn sorcerer had used his dark magics to subjugate the Crystal Empire, and harness the power of the Crystal Heart. The dramatic change in energies channeled through the artifact woke ancient evils, drawing the attention of the two young Princesses, Celestia and Luna. The sisters, fresh from their fight with Discord, made haste north to stop Sombra before he unleashed unspeakable evil on the world. They banished him, and with his last breath Sombra cast a potent sealing spell – tying his very fate to that of the Empire.
But what happened next? What happened to the peoples of this region with the sudden absence of the Crystal Empire- and the Crystal Heart? This is their story...
watch this
Intro:
Welcome to my first attempt at a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic RPG. This RPG will be following the stories of the survivors of Sombra's coup de etat of the Crystal Empire. Your characters will be charged by Princesses Celestia and Luna with stabilizing the region. Many threats exist- the Changeling tribes are scattered and starving, while the Griffon Holds are looking to uncontested lands with an avaricious eye. Whispers abound of those still loyal to Sombra among the survivors, a cult growing and trying to resurrect their fallen master. Still other reports have come in about an encroaching winter, with the all-too-familiar description of Windigos on the loose again.
In short, this will be a fantasy-adventure RPG with plenty of room for developing. Want to adventure? Dungeon delve? Political intrigue? All can be found here.
Background: Equestria is an open world that has shown itself to be a kitchen-sink of world mythologies. If you can find it in our world, there is a very real chance of an analog of it existing in Equestria. This RP takes place 1000 years prior to the events of Season 4 (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), so many of the modern conveniences in the show do not exist yet. Treat it more like a classic Fantasy world.
Races: There are a number of playable races for the RP, acting as analogs to traditional fantasy races. I am leaving the descriptors simple so that you have an opportunity to flesh them out more! And the similarities are not to be limiting- do not feel you have to be an archer pegasus, for example.
One special Note- if you are a Pony who lived during the reign of Empress Garnet Sky, you would have been a 'Crystal' version of your race- infused with the power of the Crystal Heart. The Heart's sealing would have changed you back to your fully organic form, and likely will have repercussions on your emotional state.
Earth Pony: The classic Pony. These are small, pastel-colored horses. Being as they are devoid of inherent magical talent or flight, Earth Ponies are naturally stronger, tougher and more courageous than the other variants of pony. Think of them as your Human option.
Pegasus Pony: Faster and lighter than the other ponies, Pegasi are the Weather managers of Equestria. From their home city of Cloudsdale, teams of the winded wonders carefully monitor and manage the climate of the known world (a newfound duty resulting from Discord's mischief). They prize physical prowess and regularly engage in athletic contests to assert dominance. Pegasi are similar to the 'Wood Elf' .
Unicorn Pony: Unicorns are similar in appearance and weight to Earth Ponies, with the exception of a horn. This horn allows them to manipulate objects as if they had hands (think 'Mage Hand' spell) which, with practice, can even include fine detail work like sewing. In addition, each Unicorn will often have a knack for magic associated with their Special Talent (Ex: Rarity has a knack for finding gems to use in her fashion work). Think of these as your 'High Elf' or 'Eladrin'.
In addition to the classic Ponies, several other races are available. Special note- no one knows why, but only ponies, unicorns and pegasi in the world have Cutie marks. As such, Changelings and Gryphons do not need to fill out this portion for their character sheet. Please check with me before choosing them.
Gryphon: The Gryphon live in tops of the mountains surrounding the former Crystal Empire, and have been viewing the land below with a mixture of greed and sympathy for the ponies. Gryphons lack magical talent themselves, but are naturally gifted to martial exercises even surpassing Pegasi. As such, they mine their mountain homes to fashion tougher armor that their enhanced strength compensates for. They are proud and loyal. Consider them your Dwarves.
Changeling: The Changeling tribes have ever lived on the outskirts of Pony society. No one quite knows where they came from, or how they have their innate shapeshifting ability. All that is known is that when the Crystal Heart was active, the Changelings behaved much like a normal pony. When Sombra rose to power, he didn't trust them and isolated the Changelings to the woods. Additionally, the amplification of negative emotions through the Crystal Heart caused havoc among the emotion-feeding Changelings. They are inquisitive by nature and prefer large groups to small ones. Consider them Gnomes.
Places
There are a few locales that are immediately important to the plot. More will become available as we explore the world. Other outposts exist, you just haven't found them yet!
The Sealed Zone: The site of the former Crystal Empire capital is a whirling snowstorm that, no matter which side you enter from, you quickly get lost and find yourself walking out the same spot. No one can penetrate it's layers to the City within.
New Zirconia: The new City being built to the south of the former Crystal Empire. It is located south enough to permit the growth of corn, since the corn cannot last in the long winters as it is no longer crystal. New Zirconia will be where we start, and is a city filled with Ponies and a few Changelings and Gryphon.
The Eyrie: A small fortress of the Gryphon located on the southern mountains of the region, it is the main training ground for Gryphons who haven't mastered cold-weather flying yet, and serves as an introduction to their Pony cohabitants.
Darkshore Lake: The name for the frozen lake that has trapped Sombra's shadow-form. It is frozen solid, as is each and every stream and rivulet running into and out of it. Currently patrolled heavily by Ponies. Has been the target of several actions by the Cult of Shadow, seeking to free him from his prison.
The White Wastes: Term for the far northern lands, which would qualify as a desert due to how dry they are. Seemingly endless plains of snow and wind. It is from this direction that reports of Windigo activity have been coming.
Wintergreen Wood: The pine forest that surrounds the foot of the mountains, and the northern parts of New Zirconia. Here the largest number of changeling tribes have congregated under the leadership of one Princess Imago, who is trying to bring her numerous tribesfolk under control, and not having a good time of it.
Rules
1. I am GM. What I say, goes. I promise not to be a jerk, but if you have a problem just let me know.
2. This isn't the Mature RP board. Treat it like it.
3. Please try and post once a week. Heck, that's about what I'll be able to post as is, but if you want to post more that is awesome! If you have trouble posting frequently, I'll put you on a bus so the plot can keep going. You can always come back!
4. Respect each other.
5. The language of the show replaces many instances of words with horse-related puns. (ex: Everybody – everypony). Let me know if you are curious about a phrase!
That's about it, really, aside from the usual forum rules.
Roster
1. Springfoot [Zubenel] 2. Anacridium [Xion] 3. Swizzle Stixx [Santa] 4. Evergaze [Tanyip] 5. Justi Freedom[Elix] 6. Lemon Grass [Kuno] 7. Vanilla Sky [Puwa]
Sheet
Spoiler: click to toggle Name: (Names tend to be one or two-part, and are related to you Cutie Mark and or Special Talent.) Race: (choose from above. Also, please note if you were formerly a Crystal pony) Age: (Generally define yourself as either a Foal (Child– young, no cutie mark), Filly/ Colt (Young Adult- Cutie mark, entry level skills) or Mare/ Stallion (Adult – Cutie mark, better-than-entry level skills). Note that I require an explanation as to why you are playing either a Foal or Mare/Stallion. Gender: Appearance: (Please use This to create your character as best you can. If you are going Gryphon or Changeling, make do as best you can. Original art is fine too, as is a concise but clear descriptor!) Personality: (A general overview of your outlook on life.) History: (Concise but clear history of why your character is here, now) Special Talent: (Everypony has one! It is central to your identity, like the ability to sew is to the Seamstress. It should be general, not super-specialized, since a narrow focus would be a hindrance in this time of needing to be flexible. Also note that you can't have an unreasonable talent (i.e. car driving when cars don't exist). ) Cutie Mark: (visual representation of your special talent, located on your flank. Describe what it is, and a short piece on how you earned it. ) Misc: (Any other relevant pieces of information can be posted here)

place-holder thingy, plain old earth pony
Name: Springfoot Race: Earth Pony Age: Filly Gender: Female Appearance: Springfoot, dressed for work.
Personality: A bit of a girl next door. Springfoot is sweet, amicable and always eager to help out, if it means she can use her workshop in the process. She smiles often and can get rather carried away with her projects, to the point of annoying her customers who think maybe their toaster doesn't need to have an alarm system installed...
History: (Concise but clear history of why your character is here, now)
Special Talent: Gear modification. She can add skates to your boots, springs to your step, lasers to your glasses and make your fork into a swiss-army demolitions team fork. Springfoot has never been able to just have something stay the way it is when she could make it much better, and add more power. There may be a Tim Allen grunt in there somewhere... She loves springs though, and having things with the potential of going 'boing'. No piece of clothing or gear she wears is as simple as it seems and she may be prepared for almost any occasion, except a party...
Cutie Mark: A spring, discovered after sneaking into her mother's workshop and fixing a clock she broke by accident before she could be discovered.
Misc: (Any other relevant pieces of information can be posted here)

This idea...
*He shakes his head, digs into his pocket, before throwing his lot into the basket. Also, this is going to be a placeholder Changeling*
I REGRET NOTHING!
Name: Anacridium Race: Changeling Age: Colt Gender: Male Appearance: Anacridium
Personality: Anacridium is... An oddity among his Changeling bretheren. Rather than living among his bretheren, he is among one of the few that have been domesticated into New Zirconian society. Despite this, he hasn't lost his mischievious streak in the slightest, nor his hunger for emotion-based energy. It is, however, kept on tighter reins by his guardian Springfoot, who aspires to make him more civilized and friendly while minimizing his occasional 'snack runs' as it were. Needless to say, he's been a handful.
History: Will be played out
Special Talent: Whether it's a talent or a knack is up for debate, but he seems to have proficiency with making things go boom... Even if it wasn't meant to go boom in the first place. He doesn't know how it happens, but he seems to cause trouble wherever he goes, intentionally or otherwise. Though it amuses him, it can cause trouble for others. Rarely, it has beneficial uses though...
Cutie Mark: What appears to be a mushroom cloud like mark, earned when he accidentally got into some of Springfoots' materials in a work cabin and consequentially turned it into a fireworks shack in his attempt to understand how and why she worked.
Misc: His special talent seems to be tied to his sense of amusement. The more laughter he experiences, the more explosive things can be. This can be considered good or bad, depending on the situation.

Name: Swizzle Stixx Race: Pegasus Age: Colt Gender: Male Appearance: Swizzle Stixx
Personality: Swizzle isn't the most sociable pony, though he is curious and likes to observe from the distance. He enjoys stories as much as the next pony- though stories of the crystal empire are usually a sore subject. He aspires to use his potions in order to one day help the former citizens of the Crystal Empire return to their homeland.
History: Swizzle was born near the end of Garnet Sky's reign as Empress so he doesn't recall much of the good times for the Crystal Empire most of his memories dealing with it are bad ones. As a young pegasus he - and many others- were forced to maintain a gloomy sky. From the clouds he'd watch the other ponies below as they scurried along there way, some loyal to the King, others sneaking off to what he could only guess were secret meetings of a resistance that he occasionally heard rumors of.
One day two young mares unlike any that he could recall arrived and challenged King Sombra. His memories of this day are hazy though he knows that's the day he managed to escape, the last day he remembered being within the relative safety of the Crystal City. Not only that it was the last day he recalled seeing his parents. After the fighting had ended the city as simply gone.
Swizzle now lives in New Zirconia, where he proudly shows off his newly obtained cutie mark as he experiments with making various potions- most of which don't turn out to well.
Special Talent: Potions, that's right Swizzle Stixx dabbles in potion making,
Cutie Mark: A Swizzle Stick sticking out of a beaker half full ofa red liquid.
Swizzle obtained this cutie mark shortly after the fall of King Sombra. Stumbling through the frigid cold he came across a Unicorn who had whipped up a brew that helped warm him up. He spent the next few days following the unicorn around and trying his best to make potions as well wishing to learn to do so in order to help other possible survivors of the crystal Kingdom. After several failed attempts he finally succeeded in making a potion, and with it obtained his cutie mark.
Misc: Swizle regulaly keeps a satchel that he not only uses to gather potion ingredients but also to store supplies. His ultimate goal is to try and develop a Crystal potion, that will have a similar effect to that of the crystal heart.

WIP
Name: Evergaze Race: Gryphon Age: Passager (equivalent of Filly/Colt, entry level skills) Gender: Female Appearance: [image]
Personality: Evergaze comes off as more “pony” than “gryphon”; a gentler demeanor and much less prone to anger than her brethren. Despite this, she will fight with all the ferocity and strength of a gryphon if it means protecting a friend. Considering how often she dared to speak against the views of her xenophobic village, and how she’ll fight beak and talon for her friends, Evergaze is brave when the mood strikes her. However, normally she’s a glass-half-full kind of gal but she’s very easy to bring down, an unfortunate remnant of her past with bullying.
History: Evergaze comes from Stoneforge, a very proud gryphon village. So proud, that they distrust and outright shun all other races. When the Crystal Empire ponies fell under hard times the gryphons of Stoneforge were some of the many glancing down into those lands with hungry eyes. All except Evergaze.
Evergaze never quite fit in with the rest of the village. She not only stood out with her frog-mouthed beak and large, eternally derped-out eyes, even her personality was considered grating. Where others would want exclusion of other races she would want inclusion. Calls of war would be met with calls of peace. She was bullied often and had very few, if any, friends; most ended up leaving her to save their own hides. Plus, the softer-spoken gryphon was the only one who seemed to sympathize with the ponies’ plight. So when Evergaze dared to outright ask why they couldn’t just help them, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back and she was kicked off the mountain—literally. Evergaze fought against mountain winds and bonechilling cold until she eventually glided down into New Zirconia, where she’s been living for a few months.
Special Talent: Aside from the strength known to all gryphons Evergaze, even by gryphon standards, has extremely keen eyesight. She’s like a living pair of binoculars and can even see well in the dark.
Cutie Mark: N/A because birdcat
Misc: Her eyes never face in the same direction at once and she’s constantly got that dopey smile. It’s kind of creepy.

Why am I here? What am I doing? Is it the lack of sleep? The strange fascination with random ideas I have? Maybe I just got drank and didn't realize it?
WHO CARES! FUCK IT! TEAM AMERICA GO!
Name: Justi Freedom Race: Pegasi Age: Filly(Young Adult- Cutie mark, entry level skills) Gender: Female Appearance: Awww yeah Personality: Justi is right, not in a literal sense, but she's definatly not gonna let a little thing like 'facts' get in her way. She's incredibly judgemental and opinionated, and very outspoken when it comes to these opinions aswell. Rather than be the type to let others think their own way, she instead will outright tell a person their wrong and stupid and proceed to list the reasons why she thinks so for them to reference later. She's also incredibly biased, and will often times take rumors or stereotypes as fact. For her, First Impressions are the only impressions, and 'getting to know' someone is a foreign concept to her. She can be quite ignorant at times, but rather than admitting she doesn't know something, she'll instead make up her own version based on what little she does know about the subject. If you try to correct her, she'll instead get angry and claim you're the wrong one. She's very competative, and if challenged will accept without hesitation, no matter what type of activity it might be. Justi tends to rush in without thinking, prefering to think up a strategy on the fly rather than hang back and prepare a plan. She has a strong belief in justice, and will uphold it herself if needed, although at times her definition of 'justice' may not exactly be on point. History: A former inhabitant of the Crystal Empire during the reign(heheh, get it? Reign, reins, horses....aw you guys are no fun!) of Empress Garnet Sky, Justi was there and experienced firsthand the chance from her crystaline state to her current organic one. Needless to say the switch was jarring. In an instant everything she had known for so long was changed forever. The experience gave her a 'live for the moment' type of mindset, and made her the gung ho pony she is today. Nowadays she spends most of her time keeping the weather in New Zirconia under control, although her work ethic is less than stellar, as she'll take any excuse she can get to run off and do something else. Special Talent: Thunder and Lightning. Justi is the fastest pony in the west when it comes to whipping up a thunderstorm. Pretty useful when it comes to making rainclouds or gusts of wind, although she tends to use the thunderbolts quite often for practical jokes. Cutie Mark: An American Flag, she earned it when she dropped a lightning bolt on Ponyshima, thus ending the disagreement and bringing world pillow fight 2 to an end. Misc: She tends to babble on quite alot about an imaginary place called 'Ameriquestria.' What this place is or why she talks about it is completely unknown, although most dismiss it as simply a wild imagination and too much free time. Theme Song: Team America

Firstly- keep the work coming on the applications, gang! I will withhold my opinions until you are done with them.
Tanyip- looks good!
Elix- I think we need a little more work on this one. As it is, the character is incredibly volatile and doesn't seem to be easy to work with other characters. Could you possibly tone down the character to being stubborn? As it is, the character is more 'Murican charicature than character per se. I know the RP is based in the MLP franchise, but I am aiming to explore the more serious fantasy adventure elements of the setting, not necessarily to be doing so with goofy characters.
And now, my own application
Name: Vanilla Bean Race: Unicorn Age: Filly Gender: Female Appearance: Vanilla, without her armor
Personality: Vanilla is a soldier, dedicated to reestablishing some kind of order for the citizens of the Crystal Empire. She's more prone to bouts of seriousness than levity, but she is not a robot. She works hard, plays hard, and puts her duties before herself. History: Vanilla was a young member of the Crystal Empire Royal Guard under Empress Garnet Sky, living in the Crystal City itself. She was stationed in the far north, patrolling the northern borders of the Empire when Sombra seized the land. She could feel the change in the Crystal Heart quickly enough, and she and her fellow Royal Guardsponies decided to continue their duties. When an agent of Sombra appeared to 'induct' them into the Cult of Shadow, she led the Guard to resist. Declared outlaws, they fled into the woods, working with Changeling tribes to spoil as many of Sombra's efforts as possible.
When Celestia and Luna arrived and banished Sombra, Vanilla was finally able to come out of hiding. Her experience in the field proved far to valuable to the newly established city of New Zirconia, and now Vanilla's 'Rangers', as they are called, are considered by many to be go-to people for dangerous tasks. Even now, Vanilla expects a greatly important duty to land on her shoulders...
Special Talent: Vanilla's special talent is an affinity for Ice Magic, specifically creating ice constructions like walls or barriers. Considering she lived in the Crystal Empire, this was a very appropriate skill to have when one guarded the northern borders. Cutie Mark: An icicle, which appeared when she discovered her talent after a summer rainstorm when she hoped so much for a chance for a snowball.
Misc: When adventuring or 'on duty', she will wear her Crystal Empire armor. The armor does not impede her ability to use magic, but does slow her down.

Name: Lemon Grass Race: Earth Pony (formerly Crystal) Age: Filly Gender: Female Appearance: Lemon Grass
Personality: Extremely bitter and sarcastic, claims to seek entertainment via mockery.
History: Lemon Grass wasn't always so bitter. Before Sombra came along, she and her sister Fanalia were happy living in the Crystal Empire. However, their parents were pressed into Sombra's service, and the ensuing conflagration resulted in dead parents and a missing sister. Though Sombra was indeed defeated, Lemon Grass blamed Celestia and Luna for failing to save her parents; it was only the burning desire to find her sister (who she refused to believe was dead) that led her to agree to work with them, so that somehow, she and her sister could be reunited.
Special Talent: Lemon Grass finds it exceptionally easy to pick up any martial art of her choosing, and has the speed, strength and agility to pull it off.
Cutie Mark: One half of a cut lemon, nestled in a small clump of grass. Lemon Grass gained this mark as she made the oath never to rest until she could find her sister, and to rely henceforth on her strength and skill alone.
Misc: (N/A)

Ok guys, we're gonna go ahead and get the ball rolling here!
Approved: Tanyip, Santa, Elix - you guys are approved! Elix, please note that your character is still a bit extreme by her description, so I may ask you to tone down the "Murica' if it proves overwhelming (this is D&D, after all - hyper competent city guards who don't cotton to zealotry do exist)
Approved, pending edits:
Zubenel - Please fill out "History (even if it's just 'Played out')" and "Misc (Even if it's n/a)"
Xion - Please fill out "History (even if it's just 'Played out')" and "Misc (Even if it's n/a)"
Kuno - Please fill out "Misc (Even if it's n/a)"
Once done, we can get started! Even then, I'll have a main RP post up this weekend sometime...I hope >_<. And we can all post then. I just want to know what history elements I can use to make plotlines later.
