The sun was setting in the distance. The sky was a warm mix of reds, yellows, and oranges. Clouds hovered overhead, but the dimming sun still shone brightly. The sun sparkled against the body of water in the distance. The trees too held a brown and red glow. Fall's leaves had begun to show.

Reiko stood quietly, observing the water as it stood eerily still, resting a hand against the trunk of a tree. There was a slight wind that blew through the trees, causing the leaves to rustle. Otherwise, it was completely quiet.

Reiko felt heavy at the memories that flashed through her mind.

The death of a former Chosen Child, Kale, happened in this very area. The final battle between herself, Kale, and the other Chosen took place in Heckscher Playground. Reiko stared at it, just ahead. It was still in a bit of disrepair due to the damage from a few years ago, but it was still functional. She could remember it like it was yesterday...

"That's it!!" Snapped Kale, his eyes wide and full of fury. His fist was clenched tightly around his D-Link. It had cracked moments before, and the rampaging TyrantKabuterimon was fighting against all its enemies. Reiko stared back, shocked at what had just occurred. Something inside of her felt different after that moment...

She felt more clear than she had in months.

"I will kill you!" Kale yelled as he lunged forward, right after Reiko.

It was a blur.

She and Kale had diverted from the rest of the group as they tried to fight off the insect monster that was once their ally. Kale took a step forward, after having thrown Reiko off her feet. She landed against the ground, pressing her back into a building. "Wait, please! That wasn't me--I don't know what happened. I don't want to fight anymore!"

"It's too late for you now!" Kale hissed; he had picked up a sharpened pipe. His wrath had taken over. His D-Link glowed with a black light, and darkness seemed to surround him. This was a familiar, but more frightening feeling for Reiko.

Kale rose the pipe, ready to finish off the threat to him and the others. He wanted to see her die for what she had done! Nothing was in his mind but pure, unbridled anger.

An explosion echoed, causing the ground to shake beneath them. Reiko winced, and Kale fell forward as debris blew into where they stood. A building had collapsed in the distance. A stray piece of cement struck Reiko's hand.

Blood dripped from above, but it wasn't her own...

Kale fell forward as the fluttering darkness seemed to vanish. "Oh my god," Reiko muttered, seeing a piece of the building's support having driven through Kale's chest. His eyes had returned to normal. Their eyes met briefly...

Reiko gasped, snapping her mind from the awful memories. A hand pressed against her eyes, and she tried to shake herself back into the present.

She knew the rest of the chosen would be over in Heckscher Playground soon, and no one else seemed to be there. She didn't have any intentions of joining them. She had watched from afar the last few gatherings. She had a hand in his death, and blamed herself in part.

A small memorial had been made for Kale in the form of a plaque.

Reiko decided to move closer, and moved closer to the memorial site--but took care to stay out of contact with the others.

((OOC: Okay, Chosen - the memorial starts at like 9, but feel free to arrive early if you want. Reiko will be hiding--but someone could see her if they want. Basically, just show up, remember something of Kale--you can do whatever you want, a flashback, or a time. You can make it up, it doesn't have to be cleared with me.

Once everyone is here, the fun begins.

Also, remember, we don't have our mons yet--nor are we aware they have been busting back in.))

CENTRAL PARK (NYC)

THE CHOSEN ONLY

'Been a while since i've been here... Never gets any better.' the voice of Raphael echoed in his mind as he entered the park, a bouquet of mixed flowers being carried. It was a carryover of his mothers skills in the past, a woman with a green thumb. A practitioner and believer of the language of flowers, it was something she taught to her children, maybe to pass on a semblance of a green thumb, or maybe to help them convey messages in the future in their own special away. Back then, he never really it that much attention, but as the years went on and he found himself where he was now... He was able to assemble a bouquet that conveyed various meanings if one could recognize the flowers mixed in. He sighed quietly, recollecting the events of that ill-fated encounter as he looked forward.

It was rare to see him dress in a tuxedo, but whether it was because he came from somewhere else wearing it or felt the man deserved respect and dressed his utmost best, no one would know the answer but him. The grave lay ahead, no one else seeming to be around... He was early, wasn't he? Punctuality was important... But at the same time, he wanted to pay his respects as soon as possible. Ever since then, he tried to distance himself from the other chosen for his own personal reasons... Loss was a powerful, negative feeling that he did not like to feel... Yet, first with Kale, and later his parents, he did not wish to see his other friends or family die... Maybe what he did hurt right now, but it wouldn't leave that empty feeling of hopelessness or despair, so long as he knew they were alive and well. Maybe none of them would agree with this line of thinking, but he abided by it long enough, and it worked.

"Gabriel... Leslie... Everyone, sooner or later you'll understand why I do what I do. Until then, just bear with me." he spoke quietly, stopping before the grave. He raised a free hand, running it through blonde locks that flowed softly with the wind. It would only take a few more minutes before everyone else arrived.

(OOC: Enter Edwin)

CENTRAL PARK (NYC)
OCTOBER 1st, 2025 - 8:50 PM

Not a word was uttered by Edwin as he rode the subway train to Central Park. Not that he normally talked when travelling, but, the reason for his silence was more than simply keeping to oneself aboard public transport. This was the third time they would meet here for the solemn occasion - that of the death of Kale.

It wasn't that he didn't want to come here, Edwin was glad to meet with his fellow Chosen. After all, the group of them had gone on an adventure of a lifetime together, and yet, there was little others that would have truly understood what they went through. Teenagers who had been plucked from their ordinary lives and taken to another world, forced through ordeal after ordeal, one of which had claimed one of their number.

As Edwin sat on his seat, he remembered how he had dealt with it before. For quite a while, he had been in denial that Kale had died in the first place, that he still existed somewhere as data. After all, how could such a playful guy full of life be truly dead? Kale had been one of the team-mates that had drawn Edwin out from his shell and opened up his personality to others.

That he would turn on them like that... what had caused it? Edwin had been in denial about that for a while too. He thought that something had taken control of Kale's mind, that he would not really do that of his own accord. But... after three years of dwelling on that day, he wasn't in denial about it any more.

The train arrived at the station. Edwin slung his bag over his shoulder and disembarked. Fifth Avenue, 59th Street. He rode the escalator to the surface and swiped his card on the gate, emerging outside, his breath rising in the chilly autumn air.

He approached the playground, wondering who had arrived so far at the plaque. So far he could count two - Rei and Raph. The latter of which was dressed in a tuxedo, which made him quite stunningly handsome. Edwin felt a bit out-dressed, just in his black coat, sweater, cargo pants and sneakers. But he still kept his cool and waved as he approached.

"Hey, guys" he said, giving a wave. Not something the old Edwin would have done, the anti-social introvert. But now, thanks to the efforts of Kale and everyone else, Edwin could express himself properly now. He saw the plaque, and sighed at how all this was was left of their old friend.

The first time he had met here had been horrible. The next, not so bad, but this time, it was kind of depressing again. If only his partner Loki was here, maybe it would soften the blow a bit?

Enter Melody

It was the one day of the year when she could feel shadows clouding the usual lightness in her heart; when her sunny outlook on life was marred by the reflection of the loss they'd suffered, the price they'd paid in saving the twin worlds.

She could still remember his laugh, the warmth of his smile, his honesty and genuine love of life. She missed him terribly, although she had learned to accept it and move on. After all, the Kale she'd known would never have wanted his death to derail his friends' lives, and so she'd gone on to continue living as a 'normal' teenager, finishing high school and entering college. But for today, she would somberly remember her friend who'd, in a freak series of events that should never happened, lost his life.

Maybe somewhere, he was up there somewhere watching the memory of the tragedy bringing the whole group back together. What would he say if he could see how they'd all developed since those cataclysmic times? He'd probably have some snarky comment or three to make about it all... but then he'd try and make us laugh, relax the tension.

Walking briskly through the park, her hands in the pockets of her coat to protect them from the chill of the evening, Melody couldn't help but admire the beauty of the scene of the autumnal colours lit up in full force by the setting sun. How fiercely she wished that Beatrice could be here to watch it with her... Bea had always loved such natural beauty.

It was the third time they'd met at this place, but as ever Melody had trouble finding it, thanks to her unfortunate lack of directional sense. Naturally, she'd planned ahead for this, and so had arrived at the park with plenty of time to spare wandering in the wrong direction or backtracking from dead ends. By the time she'd arrived, she could see that Edwin and Raph were already present. Reiko wasn't within sight, although Melody knew she was here - despite Melody's urgings, her friend still didn't seem comfortable to hang out as though she were just another member of their group. She could sympathise - not all of the Chosen were as friendly to Reiko as they ought to be.

"Edwin! Raph! Hey!" she beamed, greeting the guys with a warm hug each. "How's it going?"

CENTRAL PARK(NYC)
OCTOBER 1st, 2025 – 8:52 PM

Terrence stood at the entrance of the park hands in pockets and staring off into space. Being somber didn't suit him, he knew that. He'd always tried to be the one lifting everyone else's spirits but he couldn't really help it on today of all days. Yet at the same time he couldn't help but feel a bit giddy. He knew his feelings contradicted themselves but he couldn't really do anything about it. That was just how this particular day made him feel.

Today was the day he lost a dear friend. But today was also the day all his other friends came together, no matter the circumstances. It wasn't exactly a common occurrence. After their adventures ended they all went back to their normal lives and drifted apart. It was natural, it happened to people all the time. He just never thought it would happen to them. After everything they'd been through he'd thought they were inseparable. Going through life changing events tended to do that, or so he'd heard. Obviously whoever said that was hitting the pipe a bit too hard…

He slapped both his cheeks twice to rid himself of those depressing thoughts. No point focusing on all the negatives. A frown he didn't even realize he had slowly morphed into a smirk as he thought of what Kale would have to say if he saw him like that. Probably nothing now that Terrence thought of it. He'd probably just pull one of his infamous pranks to get his mind off it then invite him to go prank the rest of the group. With that thought he began making his toward the grave site. He didn't have time to be depressed. He had people to see, respects to paid and all that.

As he approached he noticed he wasn't the first there, which didn't surprise him as it was usually the case. Edwin, Mellie, and Raph were already exchanging greetings. What did surprise him, however, was the quick flash of purple he saw out of the corner of his eye. Not that her just being there was surprising. He always knew she was there even if he couldn't really prove it. He never actually saw her and she never bothered to say hi, it was just a feeling he had. Coming up behind Edwin and Mellie he wrapped an arm around each of there shoulders, given them both a wide grin. "Sup, guys," he greeted. "It’s always great seeing the gang getting back together again!" A mischievous grin adorned his face before he turned to stare pointedly at a ‘random’ tree. "Hey, Rei! Stop hiding behind that tree and come get in on this group hug!" She'd screwed up this year and he was going to take full advantage of it, she deserved to be here just as much as everyone else.

His attention was then diverted to Raph, fully decked out in a tuxedo. He himself was dressed in baggy, black jeans, sneakers, a simple white t-shirt, and an unzipped red and orange vest. Personally, he felt past the all black stage these gatherings used to entail and Kale wasn't the most formal person anyway but to each his own. Crossing his arms, he addressed his stylish, blonde friend. "Ohoho… someones looking pretty spiffy over there. If I didn't know any better I'd think you were trying to show me up. But…" He unhooked one of his arms and brought it up to his head, index finger and thumb framing his jaw. Cocking his head to the side he gave a smug grin. "We all know that's impossible."

Reiko watched in silence as a few others came. First came Raph, talking to himself about his siblings. He had always been so aloof--and Reiko didn't dare approach him. He, like Laurel, hadn't seemed to forgiven her for what had happened. Not long after, Edwin joined. White the two were not close, there was a mutual respect between herself and him.

Soon after, Melody came. Reiko smiled, seeing her friend there. Every time they had the memorial, Melody tried to convince her to come, but Reiko insisted on staying out of the way of others. And for good reason. It was just easier that way...

Then, a loud but familiar voice rang out. Reiko glanced over, seeing Terrance join the group. He hugged Edwin and Melody, leading Rei to smile. He was always so positive...

>>"Hey, Rei! Stop hiding behind that tree and come get in on this group hug!"

Rei yelped as she heard her voice be called out, but she immediately slapped a hand over her mouth. Dammit, how the hell did he see her?! She was so careful. It was too late though, he knew and let everyone else know too. Reiko drew in a deep breath, before stepping out from behind the trees.

"Hey guys," she said sheepishly, standing a bit back, not wanting to impose. "How have you all been?". She saw Melody on the regular, but almost never saw Raph or Edwin--they were busy with their own lives. She had seen Terrance regularly at school.

She hoped there wouldn't be a problem with her being here.

"Terrence!" Melody matched Terrence's grin with one of her own, glad to see the former leader of their group, affectionately responding to his hug with a playful light punch on the shoulder. "Good to see you!" She meant it, too - Terrence had a way of brightening up any room her walked into, a talent she both respected and admired. "And you're not even all that late this time!"

His next greeting grabbed her attention, and her gaze followed the direction of his voice to fall upon the familiar figure of her close friend. "Rei! There you are!" Beaming as Reiko came to join them, she grasped Rei's hand and tugged, bringing her forward from the distance she had been keeping into the main folds of the group which was now assembling as what Mellie saw as her rightful place. "I'm so glad that you came!"

>>"I'm so glad that you came!"

"Too bad not all of us share that same sentiment." A voice interjected and could be traced back to a figure walking towards the site. The group's keeper of the Crest of Love had made her appearance to her allies. Allies who had become regrettably aloof once their tenure as saviors of the Digital and Real Worlds had ended. They all lost something that day as Kale had been a dear friend and comrade but to Laurel, he had been so much more and to have him ripped away from her...it did it's heavy damage to her as losing a loved one would. In the three years that passed, it never seemed to have gotten any better. Easier to get up and go through the motions of the day? Sure. However there was just something that kept a vise around her heart and mind that prevented her from completely moving on.

In adventure's past, when she'd seen the others, Laurel would have glomped them with ecstatic glee, complimenting them on how well they looked. How much she had missed them...some part of her actually did but trying to muster a smile on her face seemed to be too much work. Reiko's presence just seemed like that fat ass that dumped weight on her lips to droop into a soft frown. Even as she glanced at each person there, she did speak their name as her 'Hello'.

"Terrance. Edwin. Melody. Raphael." She didn't even bother to pass a glance at Reiko nor speak the girl's name. In this case, Laurel's silence towards the girl who essentially used to be like a sister spoke volumes in that her presence remained troubling for Laurel.

And so her expression remained somber, matching her current ensemble; a dark blood red overcoat, with a black turtle neck, mid-thigh length skirt with a blood red belt and the black over the knee boots laced up boots while her hair remained tied back with a black hair clip. The only splash of color from the red that Laurel even had was the bouquet of assorted flowers she had brought to place at the memorial. She passed by the others and knelt down at the memorial, gently laying down the bouquet. Her eyes taking in the name of her deceased beau from the plaque and let out a slow breath. This wasn't how it was supposed to be. Even if he was dead, Laurel knew Kale wouldn't want her living her life as literally a hollowed shell of how she was..but there was just a weight chained to her ankles keeping her from breaking surface from dark waters she'd been drowning in.

"At least you have peace..." she mumbled, reaching out as her fingers stroked across the plaque. That was the only positive thing she could say about Kale's demise. He didn't have to deal with the mess this world had become.

>>"I'm so glad that you came!"

"Hey," she managed to say. Rei gave a half-hearted smile as Melody approached her, excited to see her. She grabbed Rei's hand, and pulled her to the rest of the group. She and the girl were close friends--but Melody was sometimes too chipper and excited for Rei to handle. Still, she was warm and accepting, which was enough for Rei.

>>"Too bad not all of us share that same sentiment."

Rei felt her heart sink in that moment. This was the moment she was dreading. She knew Laurel would be coming soon--and she had hoped maybe over the past few months, her hatred had subsided. Reiko remained quiet as she approached.

>>"Terrance. Edwin. Melody. Raphael."

She didn't even spare Reiko a glance. It hurt that Laurel had been so hateful towards her. The worst part was that in their youth, they were close friends. Rei, Raph, and Laurel essentially grew up together--now, there wasn't even a feeling of respect between them.

Rei didn't know what to say, and felt even more uncomfortable as Laurel approached the grave. She knew she shouldn't be here. "I should go," Reiko began.

((OOC: People can respond yet - once that happens, we'll bring in the fun. Also, we are missing one more DD, because of that last open Reliability spot--don't say their name, but just kinda think about them or something maybe? Just so it doesn't seem outta no where))

Edwin looked around and smiled as Melody called out, having just arrived too. He jumped a little out of surprise as Terrence walked up and put an arm around his and Mellie's shoulders, but grinned back as he realized who it was and what the sentiment was about.

"Heh, good to see you" he said. It seemed Terrence spoke out loud about Raphael, Edwin chuckled, amused. "Ah you both look pretty great" he said.

It seemed Rei was a little uncomfortable about being seen. Edwin was confused about that, why was she hiding? Well, he supposed she'd have her reasons. Then he figured out the reason why. Laurel appeared, and didn't even attempt to give a warm greeting.

'Can she not be like that tonight?' Edwin thought and wanted to say out loud, but, he knew it wouldn't really be helpful if he did so. Instead he just said "Hello" simply. He wouldn't be the one to make trouble.

"Rei please don't go, you have a right to be here" Edwin said. What had happened to Kale, it was a tragedy that had hurt them all equally. In his opinion, nobody should be forced to leave. It also seemed like there was someone of their number missing. Where was the other chosen one, the bearer of the crest of Reliability? As the crest itself would represent, it was much unlike them to not be here.

The uncomfortable silence was too much. Edwin simply had to break it, but with what? He cleared his throat briefly, then he spoke.

"So, uh, have you guys been hearing the things on the news?" he asked to people in general. "There's been some rumours about digimon returning. I wonder..." he hesitated before saying, but he felt warm about the thought. "I wonder if our partners might come back soon?"

He could be sure as heck that Loki would want to come back and be with him. The first real friend he had ever had, of course he'd want to try and find a way to get here.
