Possible Ideas; Still Very Early Phase Monster Hunter and Pathfinder based ideas

So, I've been toying around with a couple different ideas, one more than slightly inspired by the recent western release of Monster Hunter Generations. The others, though, are mostly drawn from a Pathfinder basis, as well as a possibility for a Werewolf the Apocalypse RP.

The obvious first one is one based around the Monster Hunter universe in terms of how many things work. Life isn't always peaceful when the very real threat of bestial forces of nature loom overhead. More than one village has been crushed under claws and wings. In this world, Hunters are a necessary factor. Celebrated heroes who keep back the wilds so that civilization my persevere. But others dwell in this land as well. Those who either have set aside the blade of the hunter, or those who never truly picked it up in the first place. If I were to do a MH roleplay, then this might be the focus, rather than purely hunters.

The second set of ideas are inspired by the tabletop rpg, Pathfinder and ponderings I've had while reading the books. The most developed one I've been working on is a forum adaption of an underwater setting. In terms of how many mechanics would make the jump, classes and races would remain, as well as levels that rise at the end of certain events. Essentially, a very loose interpretation of how the game would usually work without nearly as many numbers.

Finally, is the possibility of a WtA based roleplay. Essentially a forum adaption in a similar fashion as my previous Changeling the Lost roleplay, I'd like to see what aspects from the setting people might be interested in before settling. There's the obvious all Garou (werewolf) setup, or there could be a Fera campaign as well; likely Ahadi or Beast Courts.

Any feedback with interest or the like? Anything people might be more interested in than the others?

So. I'm away for nearly a day, come back to see not only have you made a surprise comeback (Welcome back, by the way! Been a damn long time!), but you also bring a potential Monster Hunter gig? Consider me signed up for it! However, questions naturally arise. To start!

1) In the role of a hunter, how extensive are we talking? Do we start with basic weapons and armor and eventually do ye olde 'hack up monsters to make better ones of both'? Also, will we see more than mainstream MH weapons and allies (Like, would we include the Tonfas from Frontier, along with the Halk Flying Wyvern allies, or Shakalaka companions instead of just Felynes/Palicoes?)

1a) Following up on that, are armor skills and such going to play importance, or would it be more for flavor effect (Example: One with Tigrex armor being resistant to loud roars and such)? If this is too much to think about right now, feel free to skip this.

2) I see you have mention of 'More than hunters', or some who never were. Do you know about Monster Hunter Stories? If so, would there be potential to make a Rider rather than a Hunter? Or would that be a bit much?

2a) If this is allowed, will a system involving them be as extensive as the game (Which encouraged cross-genetic manipulation to the point of getting things like Rathalos using Ice, Zinogres using water, Lagiacrus and/or Lagombi using Fire, and many other combinations)?

====

In regards to the other two ideas, i'm still not overly efficient when it comes to tabletop game ideas, and I have little to no understanding of either of these settings. So before I commit to them, I need to do some research.

First and foremost, do you play MHG Flame? Because we had some running parties going around for MH4U, and I've even setup a discord server for MH in general. (Let me know if interested and if you want to hunt together in case you play.)

Then, welcome back...

First, the MH idea: I'm game for it, and I would really love if it would rely less on the 'role' of a Hunter and focus more on something else. I mean, less listening to guild and villagers request and more exploring the world of MH with the occasional fight, but more social interaction with both characters and enviroment.

Second, Pathfinder: How are the rulebooks? I've always heard good things of them, but never got the chance to try them. Also I still have to give a look at D&D 5e. Game for this as well, in case that's the choice that goes live.

Third, WtA: Apocalypse is the original release, not the NuWoD version, right? I'm interested, but I'll have to re-read through the lore, because I've always played little of it.

If I had to put them in order of preference, I think it would be:

Pathfinder -> MH -> WtA

Xion:

It really depends, honestly. I'd like to start off early on, so basic weapons and armor to start would likely be the best for hunters. That would also likely help them stay on the same level as any non-hunters in the group at the beginning. I'd also like to include options for Tonfas and the ability to play as Lynians and/or Wyverians.

As for armor, it would likely be more flavor focused and fewer hard numbers. Same for weapons, of course.

I am aware of MHStories! I'd honestly like more lore on them, though, before letting that be an option. Which means waiting hopefully for the release. ;_; Though it may be possible to have something similar, such as possibly tamed monsters?

That's perfectly alright! Pathfinder is very similar to D&D 3.5, so the setting would be more originally developed. It's a bit like a skeleton to build off of or you can use the base setting.

Kay:

I'd love to if no one is bothered by that? -rubs the back of her neck- Work has been slowing me down with getting through MHGen, but I'm enjoying it.

Exactly. The world is wider than just hunters, and it seems strange to overlook that. Not to mention in MHGen we actually hear more from retired hunters who had to leave the profession due to severe injuries. And what about the travelers, wanderers, and nomads in a world filled with monsters?

The rulebooks for Pathfinder are fun. Lots of options, lots of monsters, and third party publishers. So the options can be almost endless.

WtA is indeed from Classic World of Darkness. So it's less a gritty close-up and more focused on an overarching story. WoD and WtA had a rather deep metaplot that would be fun to dig around in, as well as a tendency towards action. But, as a note, any changes that would be made by the new owners of the IP, Paradox Studios, will likely not be followed. We'd be sticking to the Revised and W20 editions.

This sounds alright to me then. Always more fun for me to start off at the beginning with the lowesr level of armor possible, makes the path to growth feel more rewarding. o= As for Tonfas, not that i'd use them, but having them be an option is great for those looking to test out something new that i'm pretty sure no one here has really tried out... Wish I could play Frontier still, but it's showing its age a bit. x_x

Flavor focused is fine by me!

MHStories looks so adorkable, I can't believe they managed to do something like this and make it genuinely look good. <3 That being said, i'm all for waiting for more details, though I don't forsee a release anytime this years (Capcom please prove me wrong!). As for tamed monsters, this is fine! I didn't want to go full pants-on-head silly by bringing in every aspect of MH Stories (Because watching enemies blow up in thundering nuclear fury from Lagiacrus' Kingstrom attack would probably make other hunters feel underwhelmed. <_<; ), but having one as a partner is great enough to me. o= Kinda feels like How to Train your Dragon, except we have more than dragons. I'll let the ideas sit in my head for now so I don't bombard you with too many things at once. o:

I'll see what I can do regarding getting the grip of things with Pathfinder, so if this winds up the path eventually, I don't have to feel like i'm dead weight if I join. For now, this about ends all my questions I think.

Before I go- *Hug* Nice to have you back, and hope you enjoy your stay again. o:

Sent you a PM about MHG stuff, doubt anyone would be bothered by you joining... The more, the merrier... And the faster to take down those wyverns...

As for MH, MH4U also had the Caravaneer... An expedition that doesn't touch many villages but has the members to fend into the wilderness to search for ruin/fight against the hostile enviroment, seems something quite interesting...

I also see it as a possibility considering we're often asked to capture monsters for captivity or study, and the 'Egg Mafia' of 4U seemed oddly.. Not so focused just on eating the eggs they asked you to recover? Especially considering one supposedly hatched into a Fatalis. o_o;;;

I also agree I love all the possibilities MHStories opens up. And I'm excited what lore will come with it. It's more open-world, so we may learn more about the world of Monster Hunter at large with it. That being said, what might be focused on at least at first with a Roleplay would be a little solitary corner that's not been as developed or established as many of the towns our Hunters have seen. The Guild may only have limited influence there, hence why there are more than hunters.

Pathfinder is pretty easy, honestly. I have a setting I've been considering and developing a bit, though I'm not as sure other people would be as interested in it. Basically, an underwater campaign, complete with every aquaphobes' darkest nightmares. :D

I also realized I forgot to offer up the basics of WtA. x_x WtA was part of a larger setting known as (Classic) World of Darkness, which was based around a bit of a Gothic Punk version of modern times, complete with supernatural creatures. Unlike New World of Darkness (now known as Chronicles of Darkness... Yeah, it's confusing. x_x), it focused on a metaplot and was generally more action-based. There was a pretty solid set of lore with it. WtA in particular focused largely on the Garou, or Werewolves, fighting a losing war on a cosmic scale. There were other shapeshifters, often called Fera or Changing Breeds, ranging from disease worshiping wererats to the primal werereptiles that dreamt up monstrous forms combining memories from even the time of the dinosaurs.

It could be a bit tongue-in-cheek, and was somewhat still embedded in the 90's when it was first created, but it was fun, too. That being said, if people were interested, I could try a Chronicles of Darkness RP of some sort, too, if people preferred something darker and grittier. Less metaplot, more focus on individuals, and more room to change the world like a lump of clay.

It's good to see familiar faces. I'm still a bit nervous, but.. Glad to be here.

Kay:

I got it and in. ^_^

That's exactly what I was thinking. Maybe now and then they're asked for help, but more likely any hunter part of the group would be more focused on protecting the rest of the group instead.

For MH, it sounds fun to me, maybe have someone with a bit of obscure medical herblore hanging around a group comes to mind to me first. And... tamed monsters appeals to the part of me that went through MH4U without a single Khezu kill but over 40 captures....

I couldn't make myself kill a single one, much to the annoyance of anyone who played with me.

Pathfinder I've always wanted to try and if we did an underseas setting it would give me an excuse to torture a muse with mer-person duty. Which of course I'd enjoy immensely.

WtA... I actually still have the old books, including the one for cat shifters somewhere. Always wanted to do a Glasswalker someday but only got as far as having the books which are someone in my brothers things.

I'm glad you remember the Egg Mafia. XD I remember how tedious as heck those quests were, but it was worth it being able to fight Crimson Fatalis at the end of all them. Though capturing a fully-grown monster to try and raise would bring lots of problems all its own, raising one from childhood would be alot simpler potentially. It used to be an unexplored notion but seems like now they're exploring it for Stories, which I enjoy. <3

As I understand, Riders and Hunters live in the same world, and they cross paths a few times here... But that's all I know. Hunters probably don't approve of Riders messing around with the creatures they fight and survive against on a daily basis, likely due to mistrust of the creatures themselves... I can't wait to see how the game portrays them. keeping an ear out for all info from Japan Starting in a more solitary area sounds fun. Kinda reminds me of the time in MH Tri when the Hunter had to first work on setting up stuff like a Base Camp on Moga Island before the Guild officially recognized the area as being capable of accepting missions, so maybe we can do something similar. No foothold for the Guild yet until we get there, then after a bit of cooperation, we can begin cultivating the area to being an official hub area.

Pathfinder sounds like it could be neat, and while i'm no major aquaphobe, I do have a bit of a fear of water in enclosed spaces. >_>; I can only imagine what you'll have set up for us. XD

WtA does sound a bit weighty for me right now, but I don't mind too much. You're at the helm of things and I trust you to organize it as you see fit. =p Playing Shapeshifters sounds pretty amusing to me, no matter what type, be it werewolves or werereptiles. I can't say much about what I want, as someone completely oblivious and new to the entire setting. That being said, after some research i'll see what I can do with all that. o:

That always got me, too. I often wondered what became of some captured monsters. They imply some were obviously... Well... Yeah. But others like the Rathian captured for a Noble and the like obviously mean this isn't always the case. There was a Seltas relocated, as well, too. And with Monster Hunter Stories, we know some may even be tamed. Judging from the number of milder monsters tamed, as well, it's something curious.

There's also Monster Hunter Spirits, though I'm not sure how much of that counts with Lore. Long ramble short, there are several possibilities.

-grins- I think that would be fun. Though I'm still tinkering with ideas on available races for that, since I have an idea for a beginning. The starting races would likely expand after a certain point for anyone else wanting to join in or secondary characters. Some would be pulled from the base Paizo game, others from third-party options, and at least one I'm toying with would be a homebrew race. Still, since it's more story and plot than any sort of hard stats, it would have some changes but it would be more... Possible quirks?

I know the feeling... I always wanted to play, but never got the chance. I still love my spider-shifters, even if they freak everybody else out. ^_^;

Xion:

Definitely a possibility, though the idea I have is more mobile, and less of a settlement. Perhaps the remainders of a destroyed village or a nomadic group. And there's always the option of a Caravan or Circus of sorts. Part of the reason is that it gives more options for exploration and interaction, as well a exploring how non-hunters interact with the world. How do normal people survive such a dangerous world? How does it effect their views? Will they accept it, or does it make them see it as a world to be conquered by civilization?

-evil grin- I have many ideas. Though I can agree with that fear. From seeing video of cave diving, it can be... Terrifying to consider. And from personal experience, drowning is something I'm familiar with (I'm not a bad swimmer, but I was once accidentally kept under by a group of tubers). Part of the thing that worries me, though, is that sadly an underwater setting doesn't always appeal to people. Especially since the character races most suited for the environment tend to make most folks think of less than serious or realistic fantasy settings. :<

Well, another option is Werewolf the Forsaken, the Werewolf game of Chronicles of Darkness. It's much, much different, though... And not always in a fun way, at least in my opinion. One of my biggest dislikes is that the typical half-wolf half-human form, while impressive, was extremely limited. Werewolves could only stay in it for a short time, and it often triggered something suitably called a 'Death Rage'. So it was rare you actually got to use it. x_x
