The Amazing Spider-Man Review

*WARNING* Spoilers are around.

I’m going to start by saying that I liked the Sam Raimi films (yes, even 3) back in the mid-noughties, but I was never a fan of Macguire. So when I heard they were rebooting with a new guy, I get excited and boy was my excitement rewarded. Now, with the Avengers being awesome earlier in the year, I didn’t expect Spider-Man to beat it, which it didn’t, but it came a lot closer than I expected it to.

Andrew Garfield is an awesome Spidey. He’s got the “quippage” right (the car seen is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a movie for a while) and he also does the serious side to Spidey well too (Uncle Ben ect.). I was happily surprised when I heard that Gwen Stacy was going to appear instead of MJ (not hating on her, but seriously, most of the world seems to have forgotten ol’ Gwen) and Emma Stone played her well. Garfield and Stone worked well together and created something better than Macguire and Dunst did in all three of the Raimi movies.

Now one of my favourite aspects of this movie was the villain. Curt Connors played by Rhys Ifans. He did an excellent job as the one-armed scientist and his character developed well from being on the brink of a Nobel Prize to being on the brink of insanity. The effects on his arm’s regeneration were great... unfortunately. His nail-less, bright white, vein-ridden arm was really gnarly looking. The Lizard was animated was also stunning. I didn’t mind his lack of a snout as he’d look weird talking without a face anyway.

There’s always a fear with reboots that it’s just going to be the same. The origin story was done with a new perspective which I liked. It was enjoyable and fairly fast-paced and it didn’t feel like the Raimi films all over again. Uncle Ben’s death scene wasn’t as tragic as it had been in the past, but oh well.

I’ve seen a lot of people describe the crane scene as being cheesy, but I personally liked it. It’s always good to see the normals help out Spidey when he’s oh-so-often slated by the press. Speaking of the press, J. Jonah Jameson’s absence wasn’t missed too much, though there was a Daily Bugle newspaper in the film, so I imagine he’ll show up in the sequels at some point.

As for the finale, I loved it. The Lizard’s green gas stuff was an obvious direction to take with the comics and instilled that kind of weird feeling when those few policeman get hit with it. Fortunately, they didn’t turn full lizard and spent the rest of the movie groaning on the floor. Connors ended up going all Fullmetal Alchemist on us with some Homonculus-esque regenerating skills that was pretty cool, though I’m surprised they got away with showing George Stacy blasting his hands off over and over. I liked how Gwen had a purpose in making the antidote, rather than getting kidnapped. Doc Connors leaving her alone was interesting as it showed us Curt was still in there, especially in his saving Spidey at the end. George Stacy’s death was inevitable. It always is and it was quite touching, more so than this film’s version of Uncle Ben’s death anyway. Peter remembering the eggs for Aunt May after coming home covered in cuts and bruises was a cool scene too.

Overall, I loved it. I’d give it 8.5 out of 10, which is pretty high up in my list of movies. I liked the acting, the characters and the nice retelling of the classic Spider-Man story. Also, it has the best Stan Lee cameo yet.
