" It's Official, Digifans! For the first time ever, all 54 episodes of DIGIMON ADVENTURE SEASON 01 are available in this 8-disc collector's set. See the four story arcs of the classic DIGIMON television series from beginning to end."
That's right NEW VIDEO and FLATIRON FILM, have brought Digimon to DVD in the states. So I figured with it finally getting an official release I might as well do up a review. This post is just the packaging part, I'll deal with the content part later tonight or tomorrow after I have a chance to watch a couple of the DVDs.
"While at summer camp, seven kids - Tai, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, Joe, and T.K.- come across seven Digivices and are transported to a strange digital world. In this new world they make friends with creatures that call themselves Digimon- short for Digital Monsters- who were born to defend their world from various evil forces. the children learn they have the ability to help thier new Digimon friends digivolve into different Digital Monsters and fight as a team to defend enemies and ultimately find their way home." That is what the back of the case has to say about the series.
Speaking of the case, lets start with the packaging, which overall doesn't stand out at all. Fairly standard cardstock slip cover, that matches the case- even though the Logo has some metalic shine on the cardstock, and is flat on the casing. The plastic case itself, I'm not exactly thrilled with, maybe its just mine but it doesn't exactly like to stay closed- thankfully it has the cardstock slip cover to hold it shut.
I was worried that, based on the shape of the case that it would be all 8 discs on a single spindle, My Full Metal Panic collection was this way, and it made me mad. Luckily its set up like a book, 4 insert trays, with one disc on each side, linked together with connector clips.
The DVDs feature all 8 of the Digidestined. Starting with Tai and Agumon on disc 1, and ending with Kari and Gatomon on disc 8. Discs 2 and 3 feature Matt and Sora, Izzy and Mimi are on 4 and 5. This of course means Joe and T.K. are on discs 6 and 7.
Content wise each disc has a healthy amount of episodes. 7 per disc for the first 7 discs. Thats 49 episodes on 7 discs, seeing as its a 54 episode season the final 5 episodes are on the 8th disc. However to try and make up for this they did include a "Bonus Gallery" on disc 8.
Now it also comes with a 36 page booklet. This little booklet is far from impressive in my opinon. It gives each digidestine, and each of their Digimon its own little info page. The info contained is Name, Age, Qualities, and Partner. As for the Digimon info its rather bare. Here, as an example, is the info from MetalGreymon's page.
MetalGreymon Skill: Giga Destroyer (missile) Characteristics/Group: Dinosaur Digimon with the ability to fly.
Correct me if i'm wrong but I don't ever recall seeing Metal greymon Fly in the anime. Birdramon's page is a little redundant "Bird digimon with the ability to fly" yet Garudamon's just says Bird Digimon- So does that mean Garudamon can't fly?
Kari and her digimon are the only ones that are forced to share pages. Kari and Salamon on one, Gatomon and Angewomon on the next. The back page/cover of this little booklet contains 3 sets of song lyrics in English. The three songs are Butterfly, Braveheart, and keep On. Now I kinda find this odd to be included in a "Dub" Dvd set.
So Over all this set Looks great, The one and only downside with packaging I see is my top clip that normally holds the case shut doesn't seem to work. Plus the fact that the booklet has a couple odd points like English lyrics for the Japanese songs, along with the use of both English and Japanese names for the kids.
As far as first opinion based on the presentation of it, i'd say 4/5, It could of been better, personally i would of enjoyed little thin pack cases for the 8 discs, rather than 1 fat case with all 8 in it. Because then each case could of possibly had reversible covers.
