Hyde Park, London 4:56 AM
Hyde Park, one of the largest Royal Parks of the great City of London, was shrouded in fog. This was not unusual- the city was well known for it's shrouded nature. What was unusual was that one particular patch of fog was -wrong-.
It was located deep in the park, and it was different. This patch of fog crackled with energy, seemingly alive. The grassy area around it seemed to thrum with life, and a causal observer, if they had been present, would have noticed the flowers starting to bloom around it.
They would have also noticed a large creature crawl forth from this fog bank after a time, it's multiple red eyes glistening in the dark. It skittered into the wooded area nearby, confused and disoriented. The bank of fog seemed to calm down as it left, dispersing into a more familiar mist.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
London
The next Week
"In the past few days, reports of mysterious attacks against animals in Hyde Park have continued to rise. Several of the city's destitute who spend time in the park have reported 'sightings' of large monsters, but these reports are being discounted by the head of the local police..."
(OOC: Such reports you would have heard on this day. Each of you is currently on your way to some destination important to you, be it work, school or play. As you make your way into the park, each of you will find yourselves in a secluded area of the park, and run into each other. There, the Red-Eye Scorpion will attack!)

Edwin quite enjoyed the past month. He had put his unfruitful invention attempts to the side, which allowed him to fully focus on becoming an acolyte. Sure, he had to tighten his budget a little but he felt it was completely worth it. During the day, he'd either go on as normal, visit his family, ignore their pointed suggestions that he look harder for work; or just sleep if the night before was too tough. Occasionally he'd have an inspiration to write down, but he really didn't want to distract himself from his studies right now.
The fact that he was dealing with real monsters and real powers beyond the known made him considerably more interested in this kind of study. Yes, there were still boring moments like in any other study, but the fact that the final outcome would be more exciting than just a steady job were enough to get Edwin through it.
Night training involved summoning the Flame Vent Diver which he would then learn to control in battle. It was difficult at first, he would usually disobey him and prefer to sit on a high spot and snigger at everyone. But Edwin began to find out how to handle him. If he tried to get the Diver to do what it wanted in battle instead, he would do so more enthusiastically. Gradually, Edwin became familiar with his battle style, which usually involved jumping high in the air, and moving around erratically and quickly, his lizard-like legs moving so fast they were a blur, his spear flashing and swishing as it moved. It was from this movement that Edwin settled on a name for him.
"What do you think of Jiggs as a name?" he had asked.
"Heh, sounds like a mob name" the Diver replied, grinning. "I like it"
So, Jiggs it remained. Over time, Edwin was starting to learn more about him in classes. Apparently he was half Drakon, which explained his boisterous, competitive behaviour, and half Trench Hunter, which meant he had a microchip installed on his head that allowed him to send and receive telepathic messages. He'd usually use that for mischief, but the purpose of that was so that he could communicate underwater, his natural habitat.
Eventually, Edwin learned how to summon a second monster. This time it was an Aqua Commando a pure Water creature. He was an Aquan, so he also had telepathy. He seemed to look down on Jiggs, describing him as a half-breed, while he was pure and more worthy of his water powers. But he was a bit easier to handle and get along with, just as long as Edwin never insulted him. When it came to naming him, the Commando said he wanted a respectable name, so Edwin settled on Ulysses after a long, long session of trying to come up with one.
"Yes, alright, that shall do" Ulysses had said, in his usual strange echoing voice.
Edwin liked it when they were around. While he tried not to summon both at the same time since he guessed they disliked each other at this stage, they both had their nice quirks. Ulysses was quite philosophical and always put difficult questions to Edwin. He was thankfully patient since Edwin usually was unprepared for his riddles, but if he came up with satisfactory answers he was a bit easier to handle in battle.
Jiggs meanwhile, was a very difficult monster for Edwin to get to obey the 'no touching' rule, since he jumped up at him in delight given the opportunity. Once he full-on hugged him, treating Edwin to a full body dose of oily fishy slime. However, Edwin appreciated the gesture, even if it was most likely Jiggs just trying to make mischief, seeing as the first thing he had said (which was a mistake in hindsight) that it was against the rules. He ruffled Jiggs's colourful mane of scales and pulled him off before he got in trouble.
Otherwise, he was enthusiastic and very active. After a couple of weeks, Edwin learned that as long as he didn't directly tell him what to do, Jiggs was alright.
Eventually, time came for their advancement. Edwin looked around at his fellow acolytes as they waited in the arena, giving a smile and nod to say good luck if they made eye contact. Then the master approached them. Edwin recognised him as the Fire master, Laurence. While Edwin could summon one of two water creatures, he would have ordinarily felt at an advantage, had he not known that fire creatures can damage water creatures just as easily as the other way around.
He tensed up, preparing to summon when the time came.

Five minutes had come and gone, and Laurence once more appeared at the door. Smiling at them all for a moment, he closed his eyes and inhaled. When he opened them, his face was stern and professional.
"Acolytes, you would prove to us that you are worthy of the title of Adept?" he asks them, in the formal language of the tradition. After everyone had acquiesced, he nods slowly. "Then follow me, and prove your mettle in the fires of the Dueling Arena."
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The Dueling Arena
Laurence leads you all into the arena- a circular, dust-filled stone area roughly 50 yards in diameter. Situated around the arena are the seats, filled with several dozen other Acolytes and Adepts. From the other direction, you see a group of robed figures approaching- their number matches yours. Rising high above the rest of the seats, a quintet of high-backed chairs perch with a great viewpoint of the arena. On each chairs back is engraved the symbol of the Civilization of the Master who sits upon the chair. Each chair is filled by the Duel Masters, resplendent in their formal robes. Everyone sits high in the chair, even Master Mina - although she fidgets the most.
Laurence leads you towards the other group, and then stops short of the center of the arena. The other side does as well.
"I present those Acolytes who would be Adepts," He announces to the figure leading the other caravan. You have seen her around - She goes by the name June, and is of English-Asian descent.
"I present those who would test the mettle of your Acolytes," She responds, her voice firm. In unison, you all turn to face the Masters. A gong is rung, and Master Mina stands. She approaches a microphone, set up in front of the seats, and begins to speak.
"A-um...Ah, *ahem*...Hi, everyone! Soooo we're here today toooo..." As she extended her words, she clearly glanced at the palm of her hand. "Here today to witness theee..matter of advancement for these Acolytes. Acolytes, you will be tested by one of theee...Adepts before you! You are allowed to summonnn...Two Creatures! The one testing you will only summonnn...One?" She looks behind her. Master Roscoe, turning pink at this point, tilts her head in a most savage nod.
Turning back around - and beet red - Master Mina smiles.
"Yep! One versus two! Specialist Hung, Specialist Newman - please eeescort your teams to their boxes, and prepare the first match."
At this, she steps away from the microphone and returns to her seat. As she sits in her chair, she wipes her head with a sigh of relief. The black smear left on her forehead afterwards prompts a variety of chuckles from the Masters Dempsey.
Lawrence and June bow, and turn to you. Lawrence looks at Howell, and says,
"You're up first. Good luck." He then leads the rest of the group to a waiting area - not unlike an American baseball dugout - to sit and watch the fight.
Likewise, one figure remains standing in the arena with Howell. She's tall, with a bob-cut of blonde hair. Her eyes are behind a pair of round spectacles. Her robes are cream and saffron.
"Um...hi." She says, meekly. Her gauntlet appears to be golden, with many perfect geometric shapes woven into the design.
"I'm...I'm Lucy. I'm the...the assistant Librarian here. I...I know you like books, so...so I was hoping to fight you," Her face reddens a bit, and she gets more enthusiastic. "A-a-anyway, it's not like I like you or anything. Now, be ready to p-p-prove yourself!" She then performs a very mechanical kata, ending with,
"Reflector Cannon!" She shouts, squeaking a little.
From a portal emblazoned with a yellow sun, a series of metal pieces fly out. They whirl around, eventually forming into a strange, mathematically perfect shape. The smaller pieces orbit the larger central part in perfect unison.
"Ok...I-I'm ready," She tells Howell.
(OOC: Here's how it's going to go down:
I give you an NPC to fight, and demonstrate a bit of their personality. I give them a creature. You then post the first half of your fight, and treat it realistically. Do note that these are all established Duelists, and even if they seem meek or timid they are more experienced than you. End your first post halfway through the fight.
After that, everyone else react! Cheer on, think of your own fight, what have you. After a bit of interaction, the person fighting will post again and end their fight. Do not wait too long- while I'd like everyone to post a reaction *cough* PUWA *Cough* I also don't want this to tie us down. Wait a few days after your fight post, then post the finale.
Your fights will be 2 posts long to ensure this process goes quickly.
After you finish the fight, I will post the change of persons, and randomly select the next person to fight. We will repeat until we've had everyone finish their training. This should allow everyone a chance to have the spotlight, add new characters, and explore their partners in a combat situation.
Let me know if you have any questions)

"Acolytes, you would prove to us that you are worthy of the title of Adept?"
"Then follow me, and prove your mettle in the fires of the Dueling Arena."
Howell nodded as he followed Laurence toward the Arena. To be fair he wasn't as much of a fan of all these traditions and formalities, they were to protect the world, not to show off some ceremonials and stuff like this. But it was their houses and their rules after all and if that was what he needed in order to aquire the power to protect himself and the, sadly few, ones he cared about, then he was willing to follow...
Howell listened silently to Master Mina's words about the ceremony soon to begin. He was being able to summon two creatures, probably it meant he had the rights to use two of them to defeat the one of his examinator. Like a Pokemon battle... Too bad he never liked the franchise. Too bad also that one of his creatures was something he picked more for a support role and the other was...
...well it was Yevaud.
It felt depressing at times that he seemed to get more support from the little Kenina than from his partner itself. Yet, as long he could feed the Dragon's not really small pride, Yevaud seemed to be willing to comply. Careful choice of words and planning was the way to go with the Hornblade Dragon. These were the basics of dealing with Dragons in every Fantasy Book he had read anyway. Though it was time to move forward with the trial and he had even been called first.
"You're up first. Good luck."
Oh Joy!
"Um...hi."
"Hello..."
"I'm...I'm Lucy. I'm the...the assistant Librarian here. I...I know you like books, so...so I was hoping to fight you,"
"A-a-anyway, it's not like I like you or anything. Now, be ready to p-p-prove yourself!"
Howell's reply to that sentece was just a deep and somewhat sad sigh. He wasn't dumb enough to think girls would like a bookworm like him, but eh... This one seemed to be pretty blunt about making it clear, it was really necessary to say she didn't liked him? Despite the emotion that the Acolyte believed to be due to this being one of her first public battles or at least amongst the first as examinator. He watched silently as she performed her Kata, a little too formal and math-like for his tastes but nonetheless the girl looked sort of cute in doing so.
"Reflector Cannon!"
A CANNON. Seeing the creature assembling itself Howell questioned if it wasn't the case to start with Yevaud already, but at the same time the Dragon wouldn't have let him see the end of it if not being placed on the Trump Card\Ace in the sleeve spot. It left him really with not choices, until improving his relationship with the Horned Reptile, he needed to rely on such strategies.
"Ok...I-I'm ready,"
"Getting ready as well..."
Howell's Kata was more fluid, natural and at the same time dark and creepy in the way he moved his arms and legs in a way that seemed mostly unnatural in fierce contrast wih her precise and methodical one. Even they gauntlets were the opposite, one being geometry themed with the other being feral. Easy guess to figure out why she felt to point out she didn't really liked him right on the start. Maybe she was one of these librarian angry at the ones that brought the books back late on schedule and Howell got such a reputation? But anyway, this wasn't the time to think about such things, it was the time for him to feel the mana flowing through him as the gate started to form behind his back. The Kata ended with him performing a spinnig movement, his arms and fingers extended like vines.
Skulking Cypress!
From the not really well defined portal the shape of of the walking tree emerged, vines and glowing orbs adorning his branches while on the dark blue-ish trunk, what seemed to be his eyes and mouth glowed of an eldritch light. Yevaud didn't really liked that Howell had picked such a creature on his repertoire of summons, but the young man felt actually easy to fight with it. He took a sigh, H.M. as he nicknamed the summon, wasn't really the cutest being. Maybe he should have looked into some Scaradorable thingie?
"Ready as well..." He said giving a polite bow to thank his examinator for the patience. "...shall we begin?"
The battle was basically almost one sided in Lucy's favor. H.M. was the worst choice to face an artillery type of creature as it wasn't really mobile or agile at all. While not being really a sitting duck it was an easy target. Luckily it seemed to be tanky enough and hits that Howell believed would have shattered him away in the end didn't as much as the expected damage. But slowly and steady the Reflector Cannon was taking its toll upon the Tree Kin's endurance and stamina. It wouldn't take too long before the sheer stack of damage would have forcefully banished the plant creature.
And yet Howell didn't seemed as worried.
Even if his creature attacks didn't seemed to be very effective, as the Cannon easily avoided them keeping itself at long range or tanking it with its armored sides, Howell seemed to feel confident on his actions. To be fair he expected H.M. to last way less than the Tree Kin actually did, even if the creature wasn't doing much damage to the Fractal it was nonetheless helping into exposing his opponent patterns of fire and movement and the weak points the Reflector Cannon tried to cover with his movements.
After a bit he felt sorta able to figure a scheme over the movements. Despite H.M. being unable to follow through his directions due to speed and reflexes issues the young man seemed to have found a sort of pace. He was still on the defensive, but was becoming pretty better at it and Howell felt like a predatory cat hidden spying on his preys. Waiting for the right moment to jump on his prey, knowing that too early or too late was going to ruin everything. He wondered if that was how his tainted, using Yevaud's words, Mana felt during battles. If such a feeling was the essence of a Nature and Darkness mixed mana. Looking at the Reflector Cannon, now feeling it was his prey, the young man let out a feral and intimidating grin.
He was liking this.

Two on one? Kimiko was surprised to hear the announcement. Though she knew in theory it shouldn't be too hard, in practice she'd never duelled with two monsters before in such a short space of time, and for a moment Kimiko had to wonder if she possessed enough mana to perform such a feat. She brushed it aside, reasoning to herself that the Masters would not have given them such a challenge if they hadn't thought them capable.
Kimiko sat up in the spectator's zone along with the others who were to be tested, watching Howell, who had been chosen to go first. The creature summoned to duel with him was a Reflector Cannon, a Light Civilisation one, who appeared to be battering away at the Skulking Cypress' defences. Though Howell's creature was holding up surprisingly well, Kimiko could see that the Reflector Cannon's light beams were doing significantly more damage than the attacks of the tree-like monster.
Still, knowing what Howell had in store... She could easily picture Yevaud smashing through the Cannon like a toy if only Howell could control the mighty dragon. Kimiko's thoughts turned back to her own battle which lay in store for her. Two on one... if she did have enough mana to control Deepwood Druid and Kenina, then it would be a valuable advantage, one without which she couldn't hope to match a practised Adept. But if not...
The girl's fingers curled up to form resolute fists. It was a waste of time thinking about that. She would become an Adept today.

The battle was a bit one-sided it seemed. She sat back in her seat, feet kicked up against a sidewall that was unused. Her expression was contemplative, perhaps bored, but it never gave away how she was really feeling as her mind wandered back the fact it would be her turn soon, and she would be dueling, fighting with creatures she had tried to ignore the existence of for years even though she wrote about similar enough facsimiles.
"Gimme some of those..." She smirked, plucking a bag of cheetos away from beside Richard and clutching the crinkly foil, her long manicured fingers withdrawing a few of the insidiously cheesy treats. She popped them in her mouth, enjoying the crunch as a distraction from how rote the match was becoming. "Gonna need a drink before the next fight... shoulda' brought-" She paused and smirked, looking at the bag she had left propped against the wall, stuffed with soda of varying citrus flavors.
"Yeah..." She grinned, getting a better look at the fight as she scooted over and slipped her foot from a sandal, using her toes to tug the bag closer and procure a drink. She handed one to Kimiko and Richard, though not using her toes this time. As she held up her own her eyes widened and she swore she saw the Reflector Cannon get an edge on what Howell had deemed the 'Hentacular monster'. But it was still defending and holding strong against it's foe. She could only commend her fellow acoltye on having more patience than she would have had in that situation.
"He's doing alright out there... though he still has that dragon up his sleeve," She paused and knit her brows, sticking out her lower lip as she thought for a moment, debating on the words that spilled from her lips tactlessly.
"Anyone else... sorta notice he's fighting a small lolita-esque girl with a giant tentacle monster? I mean... He did sorta name it... well yeah..." She smiled awkwardly, but without a hint of blush on her cheeks.
"Makes me wonder who we'll get. Watch me get a redneck with a taste for rabbit stew." She thought of Hilfee, and how she would probably have to stop the snow pixie before it did any lasting damage to someone like that. Or anyone. She sat cross legged on the bench near her other acolyte's to be, leaning back on her palms as she held her soda poised perfectly between the soles of her feet. "Kinda worried about Hilfee's action movie syndrome..."

"So we're allowed to use two monsters while they can only use one..." Richard hummed to himself quietly, holding his arms as he comtemplated the information given. This gave the newbies the numerical advantage over their foes for starters, but it was also a double-edged sword. Two monsters means they had to feed mana to two separate creatures. He felt fortunate his were considered low-tier for now, but he still found it strenuous to pay tribute for one and then more for another if the first creature was banished. More to it, if their opponent was only using one...
They were more skilled. Whether by virtue of time spent treaining, or in the monster they summoned. Something about them made them better than the people they were fighting. The up-and-coming acolytes just needed to beat the odds.
"I've got Nibbles and Boomer to work with. Nibbles is just a little bit stronger, but Boomer's got a fiercer fighting spirit. Both... Are rather adorable and prone to rolling over for belly rubs, but that doesn't matter right now. Both are dark civilization, but Boomer is also part Fire... So maybe he'll have some advantage against a Nature Civilization, but if my opponent is from the Water Civilization, I should probably lead with Nibbles. Still, starting off strong might doom me in the long run... Ugh, i'm going to be at this for a while..." he grumbled mentally, arms folded as Howell was the first to step forward and face his foe.
"Gimme some of those..."
"Huh...?" Richie asked, returning to the world of the normal as he looked to the side from behind shaggy hair. "Oh, I forgot I swi- er, swung by a grocery store earlier to get those." he quickly caught himself, remembering not everyone knew about his kleptomanic tendencies. The fact he'd taken the unopened treat from someone's locker back on campus had gone mostly unnoticed to people, but Cyr knew him better. There were few things he owned that didn't belong to someone else.
For now, Cyr handed him and Kimiko a drink,, which he took as he observed the battle. Howell had called upon a Skulking Cypress while his foe called out a Reflector Cannon. Somehow he could feel himself dishearten at the presence of a Light Civilization creature, but he felt it was more because it was highly opposed to his own. Still, it was strategic play in the end, and light opposing dark and vice versa was a smart move. With the dual-natured creature, it would gain some resilience from the pure Light Civilization creature, hopefully making up for the fact it would be an easy target.
"He's doing alright out there... though he still has that dragon up his sleeve,"
"Yeah... It's definitely the strongest monster any of us have managed to call up so far. But why didn't he open with it? He knew his opponent only had a low power range..." he trailed off, tilting his head to the side. "Personal test, maybe? I guess it wouldn't seem professional if he thought he could just throw his dragon's power around and win every fight... He's got my respect for this approach." he grinned slightly.
"Anyone else... sorta notice he's fighting a small lolita-esque girl with a giant tentacle monster? I mean... He did sorta name it... well yeah..."
Come to think of it...
"... Cyr, there are plenty of things to notice in this fight, and you saw that...?" he turned, looking at the taller woman incredulously. Well, perhaps it wasn't easy to see behind his hair, but his eyebrow was quirked. Sure, it did look like that japan-import manga he saw in a store a few days back. Somehow it weirded him out there was a target audience for stuff like this... More to it, considering the initials he'd given the creature... "... I'm... Not sure what to think right now..." he sighed, bringing his hand up in a facepalm that would have made Picard proud.
For now, he just dwelled on the last thing she said, before he sat up and sighed. "I just hope whoever I get doesn't have some zealous crusade against Dark Civilization creatures. Feels like every monster you guys have been able to summon all hate on the Rot Worms, some to the point of wanting to destroy them, heh..." he trailed off, chuckling slightly. It would have to be up to him to show them how strong the corrosive death-eaters could be.

OOC Slight change of program from what was expected, Puwa knows about it and he approved.
Coordinating H.M. movements against the Reflector Cannon was being quite a challenge for Howell, something that prevented him to pay attention to what his comrades-in-training were saying about his fight. On a certain note that was something good and at the same times bad given what the young Acolyte had figured out as the only viable strategy to raise the odds in his favor. The last problem now was to consider if he needed to shout the name of his move or not. Giving the whole Asian vibe about the Martial Art and stuff it seemed sorta appropriate. At the same time though...
...he let out a deep sigh as the Skulking Cypress somewhat managed to parry with one of his branches one of the incoming laser attacks. As the battle progressed, it was becoming clear that the girl was using a sort of pattern to her attacks, giving the nature of her creatures there was prolly a mathematical model behind it. And even if Howell was math-gnorant enough to not really understand the motives, he had managed to figure out part of the pattern and help his partner to parry at lest part of the attacks by predicting from where they were coming. Yet he needed to attack or it was going to be his demise.
"H.R. now!" Howell called, blushing a little as he felt a pokemon trainer. "COILING VINES!"
"Hoooooooowl!"
"Be gentle..." He whispered.
Vines darted from the Creature's branches apparently toward the Reflector Cannon which in turn avoided them with a quick movement, a sort of disappointed smile on Lucy's face as she saw the pointless attack. A smile that lasted only until she figured out the target wasn't her Creature but the Summoner herself and the attack had been a well planned and mastercraftly executed feint.
Howell's expression wasn't exactly victorious as he looked at the vines coiling around the girls' body, preventing her from moving and actually disrupting the concentration and synch with her Creature. It wasn't really a move he was going to like, but at the same time it was the only chance. Hopefully, she wasn't going to get too angry about it and hopefully the fabric on her robe was robust enough. At the same time, he knew that the surprise was going to last little and there was little surprise in his eyes when the Reflector Cannon started to move around, cutting the Vines with well aimed laser shots. "Hooooowwl!" The Tree-kin roared in pain as these were being gradually severed from his body.
Endure...
"NOW!"
Howell shouted as the Reflector Cannon had moved into a good spot for H.M. too launch is counter while trying to free its mistress. As the Acolyte hoped, the girl had overworried about freeing herself from the vines and forgot about the presence of the enemy creature. Like a tree being carried by an avalanche H.M. dashed ungracefully toward the cannon which was giving it's back to the Creature. What happened after was a mixture of branches\trunk-butt, technically an head-butt as the trunk was also the face of H.M., but nonetheless it was a powerful attack which caused cracks to open on the Reflector Cannon's mirror-like surface. Cracks that slowly expanded, Lucy smiling somewhat impish-ly as she watched the scene, and ended up with the creature emitting an explosive blast of light.
"AAAAARGH!"
"HOOOOWL!"
Both creature and summoner didn't took too much light happily. The partly Darkness related nature of the Skulking Cypress was fairly enough a good motive for his pain. In Howell's case, it was more the lack of habit into seeing the sun. Used to spend nights up reading, studying or playing Magic or RP games with his friends, the young man was somewhat unused to strong or natural lights. It wasn't really something to be proud about and in the end the young man ended up with a white wall painted in front of his eyes due to said blast of light. He could hear murmurs in the room but realized what was going to happen only once heard Lucy shout a new name.
"Seer Serpent!"
"Recharge!"
As Howell's eyes returned to work properly, he found a slithering Fractal creature hovering around Lucy, coiling her in a defensive way. The girl didn't even seemed too tired about the second summon, made while he was temporanly blinded, but given the name of the spell she had casted, maybe it was something related to recovering some of her mana. The young man was slightly at loss for words, given well, the Masters had said something about the examinator being allowed to summon only one creature, not two. But Lucy spoke before he could even inquire.
"I-it w-wont be f-fair to e-end in a draw..." She told him still stuttering and making him wonder why she did so when pulling out such a bold move. She was strange. "G-go on, I-I know y-you have a-another one..." H.M. was anyway fading away, the damages he had gotten in the whole fight having forced him on the limit of banish as well.
Howell took a deep breath.
"If you put it this way..." The Acolyte somewhat knew that both of them were to be scolded by the Masters, but since the girl seemed to be willing to go such lengths to get a proper score, he didn't really felt about saying no and stick to the rules. Blame the bit of Darkness that as Yevaud loved to repeat tainted his mana. Lucy nodded as he took the stance to begin his Hornblade Dragon's Summoning Kata, repeating the graceful and powerful moves he had learned as his first steps in the world of Kaijudo. Once more the Kata ended with him pointing his right hand in a claw like pose toward the opponent and clenching it into a fist as he shouted the name of the creature.
"Hornblade Dragon! Yevaud!"
Again the majestic Dragon came out from a Summoning Circle bearing the green mark of Nature Civilization appearing behind Howell. Again the Creature expression didn't seemed really pleased as it looked down to his summoner, noticing both H.M. fading away and the non conventional outfit Howell was wearing. The Zombie-fied Tree Kin cutely waving one of the few vines he still had at the Dragon before completely disappearing and the happy expression on whatever passed for the being's face added on top to ruin the Dragon's mood.
"I see you do persist into using tainted creatures and the corrupted tree doesn't even seem having been able to deal any damage on the opponent..." The Dragon spoke, his voice not being really gently.
"Actually he already took down a Reflector Cannon all on his own..."
"Then you may wish to summon another tainted being to take down this one as well? It's a little depressing for a proud Hornblade Dragon to fight side by side with a tainted child..." Again, kindness didn't seemed to be an option on the Dragon's prideful manners. "...by the way, silly and untasteful outifit, are Kaijudo Master's fallen so low?"
"Alright, let's settle this..." Howell said with a freezing voice, politely bowing to his opponent. "...sorry Miss Lucy, give me a few moments..." Then he turned to face the Dragon, crossing his arms and looking at him straight in the eyes as he gritted his teeth into resisting the mana taxing. "Let's make it clear, once and for all. I haven't read anywhere in the rules of this Kaijudo Covenant that I'm not allowed to have Mana that isn't completely pure. And I was told that I could form a contract with whatever creature I managed to summon, you being the first of them..."
"Ye-"
"Be a polite Dragon and let me finish first..." Howell cut short, preventing his partner to go further. He didn't minded too much the arguing they had during training, but here in public in front of a little too many people it felt suddenly bad. "...yeah, I could have used you from the start, but I know you have some pride and decided to try H.M. first against my opponent rather than just relying on your strenght, because you know..." He stopped giving him the angry glare. "...I have some pride as well, and I planned to show both of ours. Now H.M. is done and I do not have another creature beside you, so that's where you're required to step in and fight that Serpent!" He said pointing to Lucy with his feral shaped claw-gauntlet. "Look at it as proving that Dragons are better than Serpent, look at it in whatever way you want, but know that H.M. saw you and if I get failed due to my partner not wanting to fight due to stubborness, I can see him and Kenina spreading the news..."
This was the ace he had kept in the sleeve, a riskful bet, but knowing the prideful personality of Dragons from some fantasy books he felt worth to try it. "Little birds fly around you know? And talk with a lot of Creatures. Same for the Cypresses..." He didn't averted his eyes from the Dragon's one, hoping that all the writers he liked were right in their depiction of the reptilian creatures' mindset. "...the proud and wise Yevaud letting an Acolyte fail because he was childish-ly stubborn. A nice strike to your reputation."
"Are you threatening me, child?"
"Just making you an offer you cant refuse..." Howell even tried to imitate Pacino's voice for added effect.
"Very well, I shall abide to our Covenant then..." The Dragon said, not entirely happy about it but somewhat resigned to fight with the human.
"Good, now let's stomp the Snake before I run out of Mana, you're in charge for the strategy, trusting your experience here..." The young man said both to feed the Dragon's pride and to make present his shortage of energies to keep the summon up. "...and by the way the clothes are pretty cool!"
The battle that happened after these words wasn't as short as one would have expected. Yevaud power was severely limited by the lack of complete synchro and trust the dragon had with Howell, but his instincts and the human ingenuity made some difference. Lucy and the Seer Serpent were a better team and for a decent amount of time they seemed to have the upper hand even in this fight due to exquisite coordination. The Dragon and the Serpent danced around each other trying to perform fly-by attacks to damage each other, both of them avoiding such strikes with elegant movements. As time passed, Howell breath turned heavier and heavier, but the fight was still a marvellous spectacle to behold and even more beautiful for him that was actually doing the battle. Once again, like in his fight with H.M. he felt something exciting, joyful, powerful as he shared a connection with the Dragon. In this case even stronger due to the majestic nature of his creature.
And in the end, unfortunately for Lucy and her Fractal Creature, the sheer amount of raw power possessed by Yevaud was too much. The girl had given her all, using spells to restrain the Dragon's movment and forcing Howell to use his mana to protect against the charging serpent like the Masters had taught him. Had been the Acolyte using a different creature, her strategy would have brought the girl to victory but in the end, it became evident to both Howell and Yevaud that the difference of strenght was enough to allow the Dragon to safely tank a direct hit so to stop the Serpent movements in doing so. After that happened, it took only Yevaud's full fury to banish the creature to were it belonged.
"It was a fun fight, we should do these more, child. Keep in touch with my partner..." The Dragon felt forced to admit as he looked at Lucy and politely bowed his head to her and started to slowly vanish. Howell unable to keep him, or anything, summoned anymore. "...you too, keep an eye on the Tainted Child..." He said turning his head to where Cyr, Kimiko and the others were sitting, not really clear to whom he was specifically addressing. Then the dragon disappeared. Howell, meanwhile, was panting as he sat on the ground, silently thanking the draining water training for the extra stamina it gave him.
"Hope you're satisfied, because I have no more creatures..."

Kimiko politely declined the drink with a murmur, choosing to keep her focus on the duel, her attention fixated on the sight of the tree-monster blocking the light-beams from the Reflector Cannon with its branches. Though Howell and she had become acolytes at the same time, she couldn't help but feel a slight twinge of jealousy as she watched him direct the tree to parry the attacks. The twinge increased to a stab as Howell skilfully pulled off a feint, commanding the Skulking Cypress to strike at the opposing duelist.
If you can't beat the monster, go for the duellist, the Masters had advised them, and now the efficacy of such a strategy was on display. Using it, Howell managed to vanquish the Cannon, though the Tree itself was banished in the process. Kimiko crossed her arms, leaning back in her seat, wearing a slightly pouty expression. He'd managed to defeat the practised duellist's creature using only one of his own, and with an elemental weakness too... that was a feat she couldn't hope to equal, not yet. How had he become so good? Like poison seeping through her blood, uncertainty began to creep into the usually confident girl. Were the other acolytes all so powerful? Perhaps she was lagging behind everyone else?
She sighed. Negative thoughts like that, so soon before her own test, would do her no good. Her eyes widened as she noticed that Lucy was summoning another creature. But weren't they supposed to... apparently not, as evidenced by Howell stepped up to the challenge, summoning Yevaud to battle with the Seer Serpent. Though Yevaud's power eclipsed the Serpent's by a clear margin, the battle was drawn out by the superior synchronisation and teamwork that Lucy and the Serpent possessed. At one point, between Lucy's proficiency with spells and the Serpent's fluid evasion, Kimiko thought that perhaps they would prevail, but in the end the Hornblade Dragon triumphed.
"It was a fun fight, we should do these more, child. Keep in touch with my partner... you too, keep an eye on the Tainted Child..."
Uh-huh, like we're his babysitters or something? Kimiko thought, still a little resentful over Howell's superior skill. However, the quiet girl said nothing, instead waiting patiently for the next examinee to be named.

The battle had been going in the acolyte Howells' favor - an unlikely event a month ago. Yet, the specialized training with the Mana-Drain water had proven to greatly assist the young, troubled man with his ability to handle his mana. With the surprising, yet effective, choice of targeting the summoner Master Roscoe nodded to herself. As the two creatures defeated each other, she prepared to stand and announce the end of the match.
At least, until she heard the young librarian Lucy summon a second creature. A look of shock fell over her face, while the various other masters all had a distinct reaction. Master Dierdre Dempsey turned sickly pale, as Lucy was her student. Her brother just blinked, not comprehending what had happened. Master Mina was barely containing her laughter, while Master Tong simply raised an eyebrow. As Master Roscoe stood to say something, the Fire Master reached out and gently touched her sleeve.
"Wait...," He said, "I would like to see how this goes."
Master Roscoe finally nodded, and sat back down. As the battle was over, she then stood and made her way to the podium.
"Congratulations, Mr. Gilford. You pass. Now, Adept Lucy," she turned to the librarian, and showed just how stern she could look. "You and Master Dempsey - you know which one - are going to have some extra special training with me after this event."
The way she delivered the announcement made it read like an execution notice, and Lucy visibly deflated.
"Y-yes, M-m-master Roscoe." She said, shooting one last look at Howell before being led away.
Next up, Laurence tapped Kimiko on the shoulder. "Ms. Ikeda, you are up."
As the pair entered the arena, June led an older man in. He had salt and pepper hair, and visible tattoos under his robes, both on his arms and neck. His ears were pierced with golden loops. He bows to Kimiko, then says,
"Yarr, I be known as Santiago. I be yer opponent this day," He spoke, sounding very much like a pirate. He proceeded to perform his kata, ending with,
"Rapids Lurker Wwhhshrll!,"
Out of a Water Civilization portal slunk out, seeming to defy gravity by floating in the air just as if it were water. It hissed at Kimiko.
"Prepare yerself, lass!"
(OOC: Okay, one down. Next up! Shine- your opponent is quick, but not as aggressive. Santiago is a reactive opponent, striking when your guard is down. PM me if you have any questions.)

The tap on the shoulder warned her of the message even before Laurence spoke the words. "Ms. Ikeda, you are up." Kimiko's heart had barely time to flutter before she was being led down to the arena, moving almost as though she were in a dream. Images of the months of learning and practice flew by in her mind as she struggled to remember everything she had been taught since being introduced to Kaijudo.
"Yarr, I be known as Santiago. I be yer opponent this day." To tell the truth, Kimiko was less than impressed by what she saw – a pirate wannabe, gold hoop earrings, tattoos and all. She fought to stifle a giggle at the sight of the pirate groupie in a robe – merriment in the face of a serious situation like her Adept examination probably wasn't the best way to leave a good impression on the Duel Masters.
“Kimiko Ikeda,” she said curtly, bending her back in a slight bow in a gesture of respect, though truth be told she was feeling little from what she had seen so far. The creature Santiago soon changed that – a great blue sea-serpent, all scales and waving fins. Though its eel like body was slim, its sheer length, which must have been at least fifteen metres from nose to tail-tip, made the arena seem puny by comparison, contributing to the malevolent aura of its presence. It hissed menacingly as its fierce golden stare met Kimiko's violet gaze, its intimidating predatory face displaying the same expression that she might have expected to see on a shark staring down its prey.
Her first thought: Damn... I want one.
Her second was that Kenina would not be happy. The little phoenix absolutely loathed water and any creatures of the Water Civilisation, and despised confrontations with them, as they had a tendency to end in her getting wet. Well... perhaps she would be able to finish the fight as Howell had done, using only a single creature. Try as she might to justify the choice, deep down the selection of first creature that she ended up making was as much out of concern for the creature she had come to think of as a friend as a desire to win. Swiftly, with the elegance that came with frequent practice, Kimiko performed the quick kata to activate her gauntlet. As it become alive in a fiery wash of bright colours, she smoothly proceeded to the kata for her monster.
“Deepwood Druid!”
The masked, shaman-like creature sprang out of the tree-stamped portal, landing on the ground in a fighter's crouch. Straightening wordlessly, the Druid looked up at Wwhhshrll, the bulky Nature creature clearly unintimidated by the far larger Trench Hunter. Hefting his club in his great paws, the Druid seemed every inch the Beast Kin warrior, one which Kimiko had found quite impressive on first sight... but next to the sheer size of Wwhhshrll, he seemed a little weak by comparison.
Nevertheless, he would have to do. “Alright, Druid,” Kimiko muttered, thrusting out a hand to guide her creature's movement forward. “Let's see what you've got.” At her command, the Beast Kin leapt forward, attempting to slam his club down on the Trench Hunter's sinuous body, but faster than the girl expected, Wwhhshrll twisted away, effortlessly dodged the move. The ground shook as the Druid landed, sending a mini shockwave through the arena, and both duellists hastily threw up their mana shields to avoid being affected. Wwhhshrll only stared impassively, watching.
Kimiko sighed. Though he possessed power aplenty, she found the Druid far too large and slow, and difficult to control, particularly against a beast as agile as the Rapids Lurker. Twisting her arms to control her monster, she attempted to direct the Druid to strike Wwhhshrll, but each time his club met with empty air as Wwhhshrll neatly evaded each blow, managing to slap the Druid in the face several times with a whip of its tail as it dodged the attacks. Frustrated at her inability to land a hit, Kimiko continued to attempt to find a weak spot, some way of trapping the Trench Hunter so that her creature could strike.
The dance lasted for what seemed like hours, but must in practice have only been minutes. Kimiko could sense Deepwood Druid tiring, beginning to breathe heavily, though from the slightly slowed reactions of the Rapids Lurker, she could see that it too was not made of infinite energy. As it narrowly avoided being slammed by the club, Wwhhshrll suddenly found itself with its back to the wall of the arena, with only Deepwood Druid between it and freedom.
Kimiko grinned triumphantly, punching the air before her in a command to attack, and the Druid obeyed, charging headlong at the Trench Hunter. Unseen by the girl, a glint of gold shone as Santiago bared his teeth in a knowing smile.
“Wwhhshrll! Now!” His hand swept an arc in the air, before his fingers closed around his palm, and Wwhhshrll's body mimicked the movements, dodging aside faster than Kimiko would have thought possible. Carried forward by the momentum of the attack, the Druid slammed into the wall, dazed for a second, and in that moment Wwhhshrll's body wrapped around it, enfolding it within its coils.
“No!” Kimiko had time to shout, before the coils squeezed, and disdainfully flung the Beast Kin creature away from it as though it were a mere rag doll. As Deepwood Druid flew helplessly through the air, Wwhhshrll's maw gaped wide, revealing row upon row of sharp white teeth, and blasted a powerful jet stream of water at the Druid, whose body glowed bright green and vanished seconds before he would have struck the ground.
Kimiko's teeth ground audibly as Wwhhshrll, smug in its victory, came to rest before her, awaiting its next challenge. Alright, Kenina... I'm counting on you.
