Continuing with the general suckiness of these times, we also lost Ricardo Piglia and Shirley Hazzard in the last 30 days.

Such sad news. The last few months have been horrible in so many ways.

I'm gutted by the sudden death of the brilliant satirist John Clarke. Most of you won't be familiar with him, but he was a legend in Australia and New Zealand.

Satirist John Clarke Dies Aged 68

Here's a photo of me interviewing him in 2011. He was a genuinely lovely person as well as brilliant:

Very sad to see one of the greatest mangaka of the 20th century has died - and quite sad to see it's taken me months to read anything about it.

I was going to post that as well. I read Zen when I was at university, which was the right time to experience it. And then I got Lila soon after it was published. He was very influential and a talented writer. Sad to see him leave us.

Yes it is sad. I read him later in life and very much enjoyed doing so. This is the Guardian obituary:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/apr/25/robert-pirsig-obituary

I hope others may say more of his ideas and books, which to me are not reducible to an idea of him as a cult author.
