After gaining the powers of the Arcane Light, Ayzkial saw more around him than ever before. His world was no longer Dark - even at night, everything shone brightly. There were those remaining townfolk that decided to stay on, but he knew he had to track down Kain and destroy him. So he was followed by some; at first they had not trusted the faint glow from his eyes, but they believed his story about the Altar. Those that followed him on his hunt for Kain soon became known as the Hunter's Guild - their hunt was eternal, even if their lifespans were not. Many died in service of Guild, but Ayzkial lived on, outliving all those before him by hundreds of years, driven by an otherworldy desire.
They travelled all over the continents of Aerth, and saw the rise of Vampire society. Wherever it moved, they moved, tracking it closely and looking out for Kain. One man, they assumed, would not be found easily - but he would return to his childer one day. Til' then, they would kill Vampires when they could, and stay in the shadows; for there were no shadows for them. Ayzkial had taught them to make runes to defend themselves from Vampiric Magic; small tablets of stone that were inscribed and blessed with the Arcane Light and had some of it's powers.
Eventually, the return of Kain was heralded and the Hunters bristled with anticipation. This was their moment; what many of them had trained all their lives to do. When they heard his mountaintop speech, and saw the rasing of his armies, many thought it would be impossible for them to defeat Kain. They waited, and when Kain summoned a gate to the God's realm, they made preparations for his return. They looked into the gate, and saw the roaring battle inside, and they knew that the Vampire's would be pushed back to the entry. But Ayzkial asked them to stay back; he had forseen through the arcane light the outcome of the battle. He knew this was the day for him to die.
As Kain was pushed back, roaring and fighting, Ayzkial drew his knife, and walked calmly across the battlefield. Vampire and demons alike fought around him, but he moved straight through their ranks, a ray of calm in the cascade of flying swords, blood and magic. He had been known to the hunters as a solemn man, but on his face was etched a smile now. As he drew his dagger and his rune, he walked through to Kain, who recognised the maan from the first town. "You!", was the only word he managed to get through the battle-haze, and he drew his arm back to throw bales of fire through the air at Ayzkial. His rune activated, absorbing the flames into it's body, but it was too weak to stop but the brunt of the attack. As Ayzkial burnt, he left forwards into the fires, and bought down his sword on the leg of Kain. for the second time, he had wounded the Vampire through the thigh.
As Kain stepped up to behead the Hunter, his body was lifted by the great blade of the nameless god and stabbed through into the rock behind him. As Ayzkial died of his wounds, he stared up at Kain, his great ambition having been completed. He shut his eyes for the last time, and the glow faded and died.
Later, it is said that he returned to aid the Hunter's guild as a spirit and advisor, a ghost of the Arcane Light. |
