110714 Knights of Columbus – Officer Meeting People Present: Jose Escobedo, Charles Hoyack, Von Clarke, Bradley Kasberg, Jerald Meyer, Anthony Lopez, Michael Medrano, Daniel Cerrito, Omar Pereyra, and Rodney Zinyemba Agenda 1. Opening Prayer – it was done by Daniel 2. Brother Von, Fraternal Benefit or Field Agent, Talk on Insurance a. The words not to call Brother Von or another Field Agent – “The insurance guy”, the reason why is because many people have stigmatized that and when he or another person who is field agent comes into a council meeting, some people in those council do joke around saying this but it is not right at all. b. Anyways, the purpose of a Field Agent is to help brothers to fulfill Father Michael McGivney, our founder, one of his points which were to secure the future of a fellow knight and his family, and grandchildren as well. Due to that Brother Von will share in depth detail of how the insurance can help us as knights and also the Shining Armor Award as well. c. How to know more about the Insurance and the Shining Armor Award? i. Answer: Each knight has to sit with Brother Von and during the one on one, he will go over both of these opportunities that he offers as a Field Agent ii. Action Item: Brother Von should come to the next Knights General Body Meeting and start scheduling one on ones with everyone in the council since from last meeting all the knights we interested in knowing more about the insurance. iii. Note: This one on one is only for 30 minutes ☺ d. What does it take to acquire the Shining Armor Award? i. Answer: 1) Should have completed the 2nd and 3rd Degree, 2) Met with the Field Agent, 3) Participate in 3 UA Knights of Columbus Events, 4) Attended 3 UA Knights of Columbus General/Officer Meetings, 5) Recruit at least 1 new member e. What does the KoC stand for? i. Answer: We are not only the word largest catholic fraternal organization but we also have one of the strongest North America Insurance program as well. ii. This is very well kept secret and we like that way because we do not offer our insurance program to none qualified members “general public”. iii. The insurance is offered to our fellow brothers, spouses, children and grandchildren as well. iv. Type of insurance available are: 1) Life Insurance, 2) Long Term Care, 3) Annuity, and 4) Disability v. The knights insurance has ability to handle anyone’s budget they are willing to put on their own insurance if they do choose to be part of the knights’ insurance program e.g. looking at Life Insurance there is Term Insurance which prepares for worst case scenarios “What if?” And the Whole Life Insurance which prepares for a knights long term life. This type of insurance grows in value and builds in cash. vi. The beauty of hearing our Brother Von in the one on ones is that one getting knowledgeable with the knight’s benefits. You don’t know what you don’t know vii. In these one on ones there is also other fraternal benefits that Brother Von is going to share in the one on ones if one signs up with him. f. Resources being provided to our council by Brother Von that Danny requested for the Meet and Greet and other events and these include: i. Books – we can read these books if we want to be knowledgeable ii. Columbian Magazine iii. Form 100s g. Talk on Student 1oans i. In the nation it is reaching around 1 Trillion Dollars ii. During the one on one, talk with Brother Von to see how much loan you have or not? iii. To try to remove the burden for parents to pay the loans, he might have solutions and suggestions for taking care of them through the new Knight Annuity Insurance program. One can qualify for this if you are a new Knight during the 1st year and you can open such an account with $100 and you do not have to add more into this. iv. Types of such an account include: Open Account using an IRA, something you can roll over like 401k, or simply a Savings Account – money you have in your account or parents gave you and is growing with a 0.0005%, the knights have a better interest rate that by beat that 100 times. v. If someone wants to talk to Brother Von, he is available 24 hours since he likes what he does for the knights. h. What is an Annuity? i. It is a stream of income that the insurance company uses to provide you money for life, for your family, or save that money so that you do not touch it for a long time as it is in the stock market like the Dow Jones, NASDAQ. Some Annuities are risky, others have a fixed rate and it is up to the knight to choose an Annuity that best matches what they want. ii. All the KoC Annuity comes with a minimum floor rate. This floor rate, allows you not to lose any money and you will never less than 1.5%. iii. It pretty much functions as a Savings Account and whenever a Knight wants those funds he can get it. 3. Meet and Greet a. Progress of Officer Roles on their Speeches i. Why Should You Become a Knight – Tony 1. He will talk about his family lineage with the knights 2. He enjoys the idea of brotherhood and it is something that is difficult to do, having contact pool of catholic men on campus 3. He is a ministry that feels he is called to serve and due to that it is good reason for people to join us ii. Why we like the Old People – Jose 1. Typical Impression, they not a bunch of old guys. They have experience that they could help a young council like ours. 2. They provide a great reflection of what are knights are? iii. What Omar has learned? 1. What Omar has learned with the knights so far with his experience 2. The Foundation of Brotherhood 3. Being able to become a better man iv. Casey’s Part 1. How we are called to be cultured Catholics? 2. Having Catholic presence on campus v. Michael’s Part 1. He did not have time to look at his part. vi. Action Item: For all knights presenting, please refer to the notes 11.05 minutes and finalize your speeches before we need to practice a run through. If you want pictures or anything sent it to Omar ASAP and he is in charge in finalizing both the Meet and Greet and Open House Prezi/Power Point Presentations. 4. Pictures – these are going to be taken @ 6p.m. a. Action Item: Rodney remind Danny that it is 6p.m. and we will get the photos taken 5. Thing to Add in your Planner (Meet and Greet): November 13th @ 8p.m. , in the Main Library – we will practice the Meet and Greet presentation 6. Thing to Add in your Planner (Open House): November 12th in Green Room, Down Stairs in Newman @ 7.30p.m. 7. Action Item: For the Prezi, please finish the Open House presentation and for officers, for the letter forms inviting interested candidates to the Open House, bring a completed form to your best of your ability by Sunday Knights’ Meeting. It can be a hard copy or an electronic copy. 8. Sunday Mass Advertisement for the Open House a. We should do this announcement coming from the Knights than the Priest at the end of each Sunday Mass b. People that interested in helping Danny with this Announcement for Open House are: i. 8am Mass – Brad & Danny ii. 9am Mass – Danny iii. 5pm Mass – Jose iv. 7pm Mass – Casey 9. Thing to Add in your Planner (Bowling): December 5th @ 7.30pm to Midnight. The event is being planned by Omar a. There is going to be an advent prayer night @ Newman this day as well (9p.m. – Midnight). Within this time frame anyone can come to pray and music will be provided by David Modest, old music Newman minister who helped in composing songs for masses and moved to Phoenix last semester. b. How are we going to promote our bowling event with this prayer night in place since some people are inclined to go to the prayer than bowling? i. This is a great opportunity to do some community building and faith activity. So advertising has to be spot on. ii. For example, be there a 7.30p.m. do some bowling and then go over to church. If you are done praying at 10p.m. also you can come over to bowling. iii. Praying is a great thing but to be realistic not all a lot of people will go 4 hours straight at the praying advent event. iv. Action Item: Casey, get the concrete details when the prayer advent will start. Since Father Yadzik said it would start around 9p.m. and end at Midnight. This will help in our marketing flyers for our event. v. Logistics: After the Open House and Meet and Greet from 9th of November week, our energy will be invested in selling tickets and making sure this event goes well. vi. High Level Bullet Points for this event: Cost is $10 for admission and bowling shoes. Already Omar has printed 70 tickets, we can always print more since the owner lady dad used to be a knight and is honored to have us come. How we get money for this event? Answer: We sell the tickets ahead of time and as customer comes into the bowling building, each ticket pretty much we get $5 and we give the rest of the funds to them. vii. Action Item: Omar bring a copy of 1 ticket to Sunday Meeting for all us to see viii. Action Item: For tabling for this event, Danny check with Father Yadzik if we are doing it around Newman we approved to do that. Also, let Susan know so that this event can get into the bulletin so that the community knows about this. Once Susan approves, Casey will put it into the Newsletter that everyone receives via our emails for upcoming events from the Newman. ix. Action Item: Whenever the opportunity arises, all knights should work on getting Safe Environment like Casey and Tony such that we can work with the Catholic youth for events. A good outlet can be through Jerry’s students and other opportunities he might know we could do. x. Action Item: Casey and Tony please send your copy of your Safe Environment Certificates to Jerry so that he can send it to Supreme ASAP. If you lost it, ask Susan and she might have your copies. 10. Jerry Talk About the Money a. We want to be transparent with the flow of it to our Officers and General Members. b. What is the Financial Secretary doing? i. It is to make sure we do not go in negative side of the money ii. If you have money that belongs to the knights, you should not have it. It has to all go to Jerry. iii. Action Item: Danny, give all the money you have to Jerry at the next KoC Meeting. iv. This promotes accountability factor for us not losing money because once Jerry has the money, he accounts for it and then gives it to Tony who then deposits it. With this two man show of traffic flow of money, no one will steal the knights’ money unwisely. If we have to spend money, a motion is then passed at the next meeting and then that money is then given to the individual who is running that event. v. There are some things that logistically might not need to go through voting like membership cards or the knights of the month certificates that we as a board knows makes sense will need and Jerry and Tony can also make sure our Knights money goes to acquiring those resources we need. vi. At every meeting, Jerry always mentioned what bills are outstanding? How much money we have (balance)? What we going to spend things on? Where the money came from? This is done so that the whole council knows together with the knights allowing that transparency. vii. At the moment: We have 20 members and within our members, 4 of them are insurance members. viii. Action Item: Jerry and Tony make sure you open the bank account by Monday for the Knights. c. Request from Sister Elizabeth about Establishing the Round Table i. We our council was formed, they were things that we knew we also had to do. One of these things is helping with the maintenance of the sister’s living space. ii. How the Round Table was formed? Answer: Sister Elizabeth went to St. Peter’s Paul Catholic Church and asked for help. The knights said yes we will help and various councils in Tucson are part of this round table and they discuss things that need to be fixed, the cost and we as the UA Knight Council are the man power that then executes the tasks. iii. Due to that, our UA Knights Council needs to be present at these meetings. iv. At the moment: Chairperson of Maintance at the Newman, and two other councils are part of this round table, Sister Elizabeth and Father James. During these meetings, time lines for taking care of issues are being discussed. Our role is to see if we give a yes or no to the execution of each issue being brought up. The two councils provide the engineering and building expertise. v. Thing to Add in your Planner (Attending the Round Table): The next meeting is on December 9th @11.30a.m. in the Newman Classroom vi. People that committed in going are: Jose, Rodney, Michael, Tony and Omar vii. Action Item: Jerry let Sister Elizabeth know the people that will be coming to this meeting. viii. Logistics: Rotation will be best method for our presence to be there. Also, this past Thursday, November 6th @ 9.15am was when the November Round Table was done. During that meeting, Rodney and Brad could not make it to it due to classes. d. Bylaws Talk i. Dues are $20 and $15 of that was for shirts ii. Action Item: Jerry send a finalized copy to Supreme and going over the clarification iii. Logistics: The billing will be via the mail. In the mail, you see the question asking how many community service hours have you done? Already on our end we will have an excel document tracking this. Those details are also needed for supreme. iv. Voting that was approved: 100 hours of community service award for 2 semesters will be given to a qualified knight. e. Pima Community College Initiative for KoC Round Tables i. The research results from Jerry’s homework of seeing what parishes are around Pima campus are as follows: ii. Desert Vista:5901 S. Calle Santa Cruz 1. Within the parish boundaries of: St. Monica 2. Council 7646 iii. Northwest: 7600 N. Shannon Rd. 1. Within the parish boundaries of: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton 2. Council 8077 iv. West: 2202 W. Anklam 1. Within the parish boundaries of: Most Holy Trinity 2. No Council but we can pull this off with the church. v. Downtown: 1255 N. Stone 1. Within the parish boundaries of: St. Augustine 2. Council is present not sure about the number vi. East: 8181 E. Irvington 1. Within the parish boundaries of St. Francis de Sales 2. Council 6848 vii. Discussion of about the parishes around the Pima Round Tables: Holy Family is a Latin Catholic Church. It is hard to do it with them. Since there were only few brothers in this council, sadly enough this council was disbanded since they did not have the backing of the church. However, St. Augustine is easy to do to create a round table. viii. There might be outliers in these parishes and we will play by ear when we start this initiative. ix. Also, Brother Von can help with Council 6848 since he is a member of this council. x. For the Most Holy Trinity it is best to talk with the administrators of the church and get the seal of approval to start a council there for interested people who will then incorporate a Pima West Round Table. 11. Thing to Add in your Planner (Knight Meeting with other Tucson Council): November 10th @ 7 pm and Jose and Danny will attend 12. Thing to Add in your Planner (1st Degree Induction, November 16th in Newman Downstairs @ 1pm): Father Yadzik is going to come and running the 1st Degree is a first degree team. We can recruit people as well that cannot make as well to the Open House. Forms 100’s are available at the Table near reception area at one of the table for flyers. Goal: we need to get 15 members inducted and we will double that next semester. 13. Thing to Add in your Planner (Supreme Visit, November 20th @ 5pm, it is the officer meeting with the Supreme, everyone should come) a. Discussion on this event: When Supreme comes let try to be ourselves, we should mention the number of meetings we have, volunteer activities we did, how many people we would have inducted, the number of degrees we have had. We have the website going. b. How many people got inducted from night 1 to present, how many guys that met with Brother Von. Show supreme how much progress we have had with the Shining Armor Award. For example Danny can say I have 8 guys who have gotten the Shining Armor Award. c. When supreme comes we are just 5 weeks old. We should show them we are making progress. d. These people from supreme have been doing this for 100 years. So we cannot full them or beat a council that has been doing this for that long. e. Action Item: Danny at the next council meeting, also discuss what are we doing from now until the end of the semester. Also, what second semester is looking like is another thing we can also talk about f. Action Item: Jerry, tell Father Yadzik after mass that we have supreme coming. Danny just double check this has been done. g. Action Item: Danny, email Rodney the Agenda for the Supreme so that I can share it with the council via an email. h. Should we ask funds from Supreme?: We are growing and we do not need to ask. Also, we can ask supreme for advice for our council but overall if they do have something to give they will. i. Great Idea: Have a power point to show the Supreme what we have done. j. Action Item: Tony start working on this power point k. Question to Ask: What is our quota for the UA KoC? i. Each council is expected to bring people in for each year, assuming some people do leave our council. From our council for example, we have around 5 seniors that will be leaving come next May. ii. By knowing our quota we can meet our requirements from Supreme and we can get awards like the star award, double star award. 14. Thing to Add in your Planner (Jose’s X-Mas Event): In Tucson at UMC on December 6th , this event is hosted by Children Cancer Network. We will get the money soon and we are getting 3 big families of 4 to 7 people per family. a. Action Item: Jose, get the time details for this event when you talk to the people in charge of this event. 15. Fundraising Opportunity: Mother of Sorrows do a pancake event. They offer this to church attendees for $3. This might appeal to the morning mass if UA KoC is interested to do this. a. Action Item: In the Meet and Greet, bring this up in the agenda Danny. It is a great way for to get some wisdom from other councils who have members that love doing this. How to lay this out, how to do it e.t.c. Also, do a 50-50 raffle at the Meet and Greet as well. 16. Thing to Add in your Planner (Tailgate): Jose will be cooking again and it is good way to get funds. |
