this is my modification of a taoist meditation technique designed for entering the gate of dreams a place where it is said the collective subconscious of all the world resides. The toaists believe that by entering the gate of dreams one can contact the immortals and learn the secrets of the universe, but the way is not easy as one has to deduce between true knowledge and that which has been placed before them to fool their eyes as the immortals are not one's to give away such knowledge freely. This version however is designed for inducing a lucid dreaming state so that one can remain aware even while asleep incorporating elements of the taoist “gate of dreams” sleep meditation and have many uses such as exploring one's subconscious or working out problems in a dream state. To enter this state one has to train themselves to remain aware even while asleep. The imagery used will depend on the person in question but here's a simple example on how to go about it. 1) find a comfortable position to sleep in. you don't want to be tossing and turning as this will disrupt your thought process. 2) Begin creating a mental image of your start position this can be an open field on a sunny day, a wooded mountainside or an empty train station at night. The exact image doesn't matter just pick something that feels right to you and build on it make it as real in your mind as you can. 3) When you're ready build your bridge to the dream world. This can be a hole in the ground (as in alice's rabbit hole) a cave going deep into the side of a mountain gently descending, a train or so forth as long as it fits your vision. 4) Next call forth your dream guide, this will normally take the form of an animal. Don't try to picture it just call it too you, hear it's approach and wait for it. Don't get disheartened if it doesn't arrive straight away and don't try to force it's arrival as this can lead to a false dream guide (one created by the conscious mind not the subconscious. 5) When your dream guide arrives follow it across your bridge to the dream world. Focus on the journey be it descending down a hole in the ground. Walking into the cave that descends into darkness beneath the earth or riding on a train. Just focus on the journey and your guide as you fall asleep. The key part is to keep these images in your mind and keep focused as you fall asleep. if done right you should reach a point where you're aware that you're asleep this is the point where you should reach your destination and can begin exploring your own mind. The aim at this point is to drive your own dream, The exact visualisations at this point will depend on the individual. You may see a corridor of doors, a room full of people, a library, or many other possible scenarios that represent aspects of your own mind depending on what level of lucidity you manage to reach in your dream will depend on how far you'll be able to get in your dream and it can take many attempts. It is also handy to keep a note pad close at hand and record any notes the moment you wake up Another version of this technique I've encountered in the past (a native american version I believe) where one focuses on an image such as a dragon, a particular plant or something that they won't normally see and keep that image in your mind as you fall asleep so that your mind remembers it and awakes your awareness within the dream on seeing it |
