The guy playing evil medical center isn't on this site, he's a brand new player. My deck was birds/inhumans/darkseid. Apparently I wasn't drawing so well when you walked by. Lll

So I piloted the "Gamma Bomb Abuse" deck that won the tourney. Many of you may recognize it as basically Jason Hager's Cold School deck. I'm a big fan of pretty much all of Hager's work (New School is probably my favorite VS deck) so I was happy to give Cold School a spin. I briefly considered running a version of his D.I. Gauntlet deck but I played it a couple times and realized that if I didn't practice with it for a month or two I would just make a thousand play mistakes and get crushed.

All of MCG was banned for the tourney so I had to replace the Omnis in the original build. I took the opportunity to fill these spots with tech to deal with matchups that Hager wouldn't have had to face in that Modern Age. The biggest threat was Galactus. Both decks will want to stall and a turn 9 Galactus trumps a turn 9 Imperiex pretty much every time. The inclusion of Darkseid, Dark God and Endgame solved that problem. I could find both with 3 drop Hal or Security Clearance so I should be able to assemble them if needed. From the Ashes was put in to help against decks that could force damage early and then finish the game off through burn. I'm already planning to ramp up to 9 resources to drop a Gamma Bomb early so the threshold is a non-factor and the 30+ endurance that you gain is pretty back breaking. The 61st card was the MEQ Webshooters. With all the search and the cycle from Tbolts Mountain I didn't think the extra card would dramatically hurt consistency and without it I would pretty much fold against at opposing Radman and even if I wasn't playing against Radman it's not like getting a reusable Entangle in other matchups was a bad thing.

Super In-depth I-didn't-take-any-notes-so-this-is-all-from-memory* Tourney Report:

Round 1 vs. Minivan987 (Warbound): This was a disappointing matchup. With smaller tournaments you're always going to end up playing against your friends, but getting paired in the first round is always a bummer. It pretty much guarantees that one of you isn't going to make the cut right out the gate. There wasn't too much of note in this match. I knew his deck and he knew mine. We decided to play as quickly as possible so we could go get a look at what other decks were running around. His best bet was to force as much damage as possible on turn 4 and 5 and then try to burn me out with the Great Arena if he didn't kill me. If he got lucky, 7 drop Hulk could knock me back a resource and prolong the game slightly. He ended up hitting his curve pretty well but the pumps and Righteous Anger were in short supply. The game went to turn six and I bombed the field he didn't have his 7 or a way to find him so he scooped up and we checked out the competition.

In prepping for the tourney I had tested out a lot of decks but hadn't really settled on what I was going to play until the last couple of days. I wasn't even sure I was going to be able to make the trip since I normally have to be at work at 9 or 10 PM on Saturdays but my boss said it would be OK if I came in late. As we looked around I realized that I had I had a very real shot of winning the tournament. There were not too many fast decks and realistically all I needed to do was live until turn six to win. The biggest worries I saw were the MKKO and Substi-buse decks (I think Substi-buse is currently listed as BoP/Inhumans in the decklists, but there was definitely a BoP/Darkseid player). EMS and Radman probably would not have been too fun either, but I didn't see them in my pass around the room. Shadowpact could have been tough too since he was also a MD player so we had tested together and he knew that stock piling Conclaves and Transmutations made my life difficult. Luckily for me, Substi-buse and Shadowpact both had awful draws in round one and lost so the likelihood of me having to play them was quite low.

Round 2 vs. SP Romanus (MKKO): This game was just a disaster. He won the die roll and took odds which is my preferred initiative. My opening hand had a Tbolts Mountain and a Radman so I kept it. Turn one he dropped Black Widow to my nothing and I realized it would be an uphill climb. He swung and it was 48-50. Turn 2 I missed again and he dropped Punisher 43-50. Turn 3 he dropped Blade. I played Radman. He swung at Radman with Blade and pushed him into the hidden area. We both passed and traded 3s 39-47. He swung directly with his other characters, played a Devastating Blow from the row and flipped a Stryker's activating for +2, 29-47. I expected him to off my Radman with Punisher, but instead he just used Quick Kill. Turn 4 I had a Collect Them All but anything I played would get killed so I just dropped nothing hoping something would materialize next turn. He dropped Wolverine and swung with everyone and a Stryker's activation 9-47. Turn 5 I still hadn't seen a JLA character. I told him I didn't have anything and he offered his hand. Nothing like getting my doors blown off to bring me back down to Earth. I was 1-1.

Round 3 vs. the ??? Warbound player: I wish I could remember this guy's name. He was a good dude. We were both 1-1 so we knew that whoever lost this round was destined for the Web side event. I don't know exactly what this guy's list was, but it didn't feel quite as aggressive as my friend's Warbound list, but he may have just missed a lot of his pumps. I also didn't have to deal with a Great Arena which was great since that meant that Blizzard and Bullseye were free to do their thing which always makes it far easier to get deeper in the game. On turn 6 I ramped up and bombed the field. This came as a surprise to my opponent as he wasn't familiar with the Cold School deck. Over the next couple of turns I recycled key cards with 6 drop Aquaman and Poseidonis and bombed again on turn 8 and 9. On turn 10 I dropped Imperiex on my initiative and got a swing in for 26 (lost 2 ATK for a face up Empire's End). This was only enough to get our endurance totals close to one another in the teens to low 20s. Before I could finish the job the next turn he dropped 8 drop Hulk. He used an Imperial Dreadnaught to stun Hulk who auto recovered and had invulnerability due to Korg and Hiroim so he KO'd Imperiex and gained 8 endurance on the exchange. I had forgotten to place a resource on turn 10 so I just played a 6 drop Aquaman to get back Imperiex and a bomb to wipe out Hulk. On turn 12 I went first and spent my 11 resource points on Darkseid and Hal Jordan. When my opponent failed to redrop 8 drop Hulk I used Hal to go find Endgame for the win. Because of the quick Round One match and the total wiff in Round Two my deck had flown under the radar as the only character most people had seen was 3 drop Radman, but now the secret was out. I was 2-1 and SP Romanus won his match to go 3-0. Considering the tiebreaker on my loss I was pretty sure that if I could win my last match I would make the cut to top 4.

Round 4 vs. Cliff(?) (MKKO): For the final round I ended up across from the other MKKO player who I'm pretty sure was named Cliff. To start off I lost the die roll for the fourth time and again got stuck with evens. On turn one I was happy to see Black Cat on the other side of the field against my Blizzard instead of Black Widow. On turn 2 I think he dropped Punisher while I dropped Joystick. Turn 3 saw Radman and Blade. He stunned Radman and not wanting Punisher to stun back used his effect to KO Radman. Turn 4 I dropped Bullseye and he used Wild Ride to find Wolverine. I swung with Joystick for 4 but simply activated Blizzard for his effect and Cliff chose to lock down Black Cat. He then surprised me by playing Only Human on Bullseye and paying 2 with Wolverine to come into the hidden area. I responded by flipping 2 copies of Dirty Tricks. He didn't have any pumps so the attack was brickwalled with no one stunning. Now Blade was also unable to stun Joystick so we went to next turn. On 5 he dropped Vengence while I played Aquaman and flipped an Empire's End. Combat was again uneventful as my ATK lowering ongoings and the threat of Bullseye left him unable to do anything. On 6 I dropped the big Aquaman while Cliff dropped 6 drop Ghost Rider. I swung through Vengence just to do a little damage so that Imperiex would be able to finish the game in one swing later in the game. I ramped up played a few copies of Security Clearance to search and bombed the field. On 7 he dropped 5 drop Punisher and 2 drop Daredevil. I replayed 6 drop Aquaman and a Blizzard he activated Punisher on Daredevil and suicided into Aquaman for the double stun I played another Security Clearance and went to 8. On 8 I dropped Darkseid and substituted Bullseye over Aquaman just in case anything happened to my team-up. At the start of combat I used the Mountain once to go up to 9 and played Endgame to go to 3-1.

In the match between SP Romanus and Wallywest both entered 3-0 and were assured a spot in top 4. Luckily for me Wally had conceded to SP leading to the SP being the one seed Wally being the 2 seed and me being the 3 seed. I'm not sure what sirthomas's breakers were so it's possible that if they had reversed the decision Wally would have been the one and I would have been the four leading to the same matchup but I'm not really sure.

Semifinal vs. Wallywest1988 (Good Guys): Unfortunately for Wally this was pretty much a nightmare matchup. While I failed to hit characters early in the game I hit a ton of the ATK sapping ongoings. On turn 4 I had two Dirty Tricks and an Empire's End. I had also managed to lock down a character on turn 3 with Blizzard and a mountain so I was in pretty good shape. I was not expecting him to recruit a Reality Gem on turn four targeting my face up mountain, but I was able to play a New Era in response to replace it with a new copy. He also had a good play of equipping 4 drop Katar with a Signal Device and using Uni-power to come after my hidden Bullseye, but ultimately there was just no way he could force enough damage to end the game before 6. I had all the pieces to ramp and bombed the field. I had another bomb and the ability to ramp again on 7 so he conceded and we went to game 2.

Game 2 I saw even less characters but again had a ton of Dirty Tricks and Empire's Ends. Wally switched things up and found Fire on turn 5 and burned me for about 20 with powerups. Turn 6 came and I had all the pieces I needed to ramp but I still hadn't seen a Gamma Bomb or a way to find one. It quickly became apparent that he had enough powerups to burn me to death so I ramped all the way up to 10 resources searching for anything of use but came up empty. Game 2 was Wally's.

In game three I didn't see as many of the ongoings but I did hit more characters. Wally and I both missed on one. Two saw his Booster to my Joystick. Three was Hal and Shayera. I took Hal at Booster and Joystick absorbed some damage. Turn 4 he dropped Katar with a signal device I used Hal to go searching and dropped a Bullseye and flipped an Empire's End. Joystick absorbed a bunch of damage then I took some direct. On 5 I dropped Aquaman and Blizzard while Wally played Fire. Joystick stunned Booster then Blizzard activated locking down Shayera. Katar used Uni-Power to come after Bullseye again but I activated him to return him to my hand. He then went after Blizzard while Fire stunned Aquaman, but he wasn't able to get enough damage through. On six I bombed for a commanding lead in terms of board presence. We played things out and I again hit Darkseid with an Endgame on turn 8.

Finals vs. sirthomas (Check/Villains): No offense to Tom, but I was quite happy to not have to face MKKO again. I knew Check/Villains wasn't nearly fast enough to beat me before turn six so really the only way I wouldn't win this matchup is if I somehow failed to assemble my pieces which really shouldn't happen. I finally won a die roll and took odds. On one I dropped Blizzard while he missed. Turn 2 was his Sarge Steel to my nothing. On three I think I dropped Hal and he dropped Ahmed. I used the Mountian to get to four resources and activated Blizzard locking down his Sarge. Turn four he dropped Bizarro and teamed up I think I dropped Aquaman. I'm not sure what I dropped on five but he played Mr. Freeze and activated Ahmed to find something. I attacked Sarge Steel and activated Blizzard locking down Freeze. Bizarro did some damage but not enough. On six I bombed. He used the Spire to save Ahmed. Turn 7 I dropped 6 drop Aquaman and Blizzard he boosted the 5 drop OMAC who I locked down with Blizzard. On 8 I bombed again since I didn't have the pieces to win with Darkseid. He surprised me by playing a Knights' Gambit blowing up a face up Dirty Tricks and postponing the inevitable. The next turn I got the pieces for the Darkseid win and bombed again. The next turn I got Darkseid to go off with an Endgame.

Game 2 - Towards the end of the first game Tom had realized that Threat Neutralized would be very detrimental to my ability to recycle the resources and characters that ramping and bombing were putting into my KO'd pile. This game played out quite similarly he hit Connie on one, Sarge on two, and searched out Ahmed on three with Connie. I think I hit Joystick on two. I didn't play any ongoings this game because I didn't want to go back a turn like the first game. On 4 I stunned Sarge and locked down Bizarro with Blizzard. On 5 he dropped the OMAC and protected him with Sarge. I played a Bullseye. He used Sewer System to have Sarge attack Blizzard. He then attacked with the OMAC I attempted to use Bullseye, but he just had Sarge take the stun. He flipped a Threat Neutralized. On six I under dropped and he played Huntress and used Ahmed to search. During combat I began to ramp then used Hal to find a Death of the Dream to replace his Threat Neutralized and a Security Clearance to find a Gamma Bomb. I finished ramping up to 9 and played the bomb asking whether he had a Spire or another Threat Neutralized. He had neither, Ahmed hit the KO'd pile, and I took the 2-0 victory.

Thanks again to Tim for organizing the tourney and everyone for coming out. It was a good time.

*Obviously my memory isn't going to be 100% right. Some of these plays may have occurred a bit differently than I recall.

Yea that definitely sucks. I was 3-1 and missed top 4. It was still fun though.

I was talking to my friend about this... Any idea how many 3-1s missed top 4? Who did you lose to and what round was it? Tie breakers can really be crappy when you only play 4 rounds.

Two 3-1 missed. I lost in the first round to the guy playing squad I forget his name.

Ah, I remember now; you had that brutal first round where you missed like all of your Darkseid characters. The Squad guy was one of the MD players. His name is Rick, but I don't think he's on the boards.

He ended up having a couple bad matches after that. I know he got stretched out by EMS and lost to a Press loop. I don't remember what his other match was, but I know he ended up 1-2 before he dropped to do the Web side event.

I hope Tim gets the other lists posted later this week. I heard some interesting stuff about your deck from the MD Warbound player you beat. He said you hit him for some astronomical amount of damage on 5 with Dark Superboy swinging twice with a Sam Parrington activation and a Dark Lantern sub. Sounds pretty sweet to me.

Yea like you said it was superboy and parington. Subbed in a dark lantern to keep superboy from stunning, subbed in dark thangarian for +2 attack for the turn. Added some crackshots and flying kicks. It ended up being two attacks for 23 or 24.

The deck is really good. It can also burn a lot with Unravel Reality. The spiderfriends, heralds player flipped elemental converters. I subbed in 11 characters. That's 44 damage.
