Has anybody played this a GenCon yet? What are your thoughts? Are the new rules making or breaking this game? |

I unfortunately did not enjoy the game...at all. Like zero. The 2 guys I went up with have the opinion of "Meh." There actual response is, "It definitely is NOT Vs but it is "okay"." They plan on occasionally playing it at a friends house but they are not going to sink a lot of time or money into it (ie: buying sets they don't care about or traveling to a Hobby Shop to play in a Hobby League). A UDE Judge that I had known for a while that lives in my home state spoke to me at the start of the day and asked me what I thought and I told him from 3-4 hours or so I played it Friday night after arriving in Indianapolis I was not a fan. At the end of the day (I played 8 rounds out of 9 before calling it quits when I hit 4-4 because I knew I couldn't hit Top 24 as I was at the 27th mark while being 4-3) he asked me again. "So what you think now that you have got to play it in a tournament environment?" I responded bluntly and direct just to make it short and sweet cause I had been in the convention center since 9 AM and it was now 5:30 PM and I was ready to leave (wasn't really trying to be rude although I could see how it could come across as such), "I think the game is shit. I'd rather spend my time and money on Hearthstone than this game." I then went and sold my box to another gamer for $25 to recoup some of the $$ I had lost on the trip :P. The things that mainly turn me off from the game were: Dead resource row. It irked me (and quite a few others I spoke to) that you couldn't play Plot Twist from your resource row so there were a lot of times where you would have at least one dead card if not 2 or more in your resource row just because of a shitty draw. No search. Literally...zero. There are no tutor options at all. Not a lot of card draw options. I thought for sure if there was not going to be any search there would be some decent generic card draw options. Not the case. If Professor X wasn't your Main then you were s.o.l on card drawing capability (and even then Professor X isn't technically a card drawing option...he's a mill). Only one team-up option. 4-Drop Star Lord is it. There are no other cards in the entire set that allows you to team-up. Top Deck dependent. Because of the lack of draw and lack of tutors there were quite a few games I played and quite a few games I spectated that simply came down to what the player top decked in order to win. And I think the release schedule they announced for the Sets and Expansions are pretty bleh (although I had already wrote the game off by the time they made this announcement). For anyone who doesn't know, from what I heard from a UDE interview at Gen Con after the tournament was held (once again I was just told about the interview...so if anything I state about it is wrong my apologies but I believe the interview is online somewhere) they are going to use Gen Con each year to release the new Set. In between that time in January and May (I think) they will release a 200 card set that will feature 2 new teams and cards (so 50 new cards every 4 months or so). They strongly hinted at the next set being Aliens vs Predator as they mentioned it in the example (as this has been hinted multiple times in past articles and interviews). So what this means is after this Marvel Set and 2 50 card expansions the players of this game that are playing it because it involves spandex will be left high and dry with no reason to play the game for a year straight. Then if they choose to stay away from spandex again that will be 2 years straight with no reason to play the game. Which is exactly where the 2 friends I went with will be in because they straight up said they are only buying spandex based sets. They could care less about Aliens, Crow, Firefly, Big Trouble in Little China, etc... Oh and lastly, one UDE personnel was getting interviewed at one point and actually made the comment, "And you know the one thing great about this version of Vs is it is totally compatible with old Vs if you want to play it on your kitchen table with your friends." /insert confused gif Apparently that guy hadn't even played the game because yeah...it is not "totally compatible" with old Vs. In the end I hope those that enjoy the game get a kick out of it and have fun but it most definitely is not for me. The only real enjoyment I got out of the weekend was hanging out with old friends and getting to meet Scott Thompson, Jason Brown (old jbo from the forums), and Reid Cox. Thanks for your feedback KK... I didn't see this post before I posted over on the other thread. It does look like they are trying to make the game more topdecky as to give it more of a casual "everyone has a chance to win" game. That comment about it being compatible with OVS was funny. I'm not really sure how I feel about the one-use location stuff. I probably would have preferred it to be exhaust but maybe after testing they found that it was too easy to activate the powers. Based on the tourney reports, it didn't seem like players had too many problems with location-lack and were able to activate their powers when needed. I guess I just don't like that you HAVE to put locations in our deck and looking at deck lists, quite a few of them. Whoever you sold your box to was lucky... I think you should have asked for at least $40. :) One thing that I think would allow you to play PTs from the row but mitigate the "always checking face down cards" is to play PTs face up like Locations and then when you use them turn them face down. Yes, you are showing your opponent what you have, but you are also not wasting a PT in the resource row... and this could give you an strategic bluff advantage. Maybe you can add that as a house rule? Heh. |

It is unfortunate that the biggest complaint I hear about VS 2PCG is that it is not old VS. I pre-ordered my box after I got over my gripes that it changed. |

I didn't get a chance to play in the 10k but I managed to score a box and have played some games. It's not as much fun as the old VS. and I don't like the less emphasis on team affiliation. Other than that, I enjoy it. There's definitely more depth to it than you might first think, especially with formation. So far I'm having the most fun with the Thanos MC. His Infinity Gauntlet ability is brutal and his level one ability is great too. For a tournament I'd probably play the Aggro Storm deck that got second place. Overall though, it's a fun game. Hopefully it sells well and maybe we can get some decent OP program going in the future. |

It's not exactly what VS was, but I don't think it's crap either. The core may be lacking in search, card draw and team ups, but it's the first set and is meant to just give you a taste of the possibilities. Here is my take in a nutshell: Pros: - how flight and range is handled is an improvement. It just makes sense a ranged guy would only get stunned back by someone else with range. - Heros make the game more thematic. Players of the old game always griped the best characters were ones they never heard of. Cons: - no plots in the resource row creates dead cards. -locations feel a little like land in magic. Different but undecided: - No stack made me really upset at first, but after playing it's alright. - Wounds really change the curve. Tempo feels more like hearthstone than magic. It's too early for me to say for sure, but hand management and board advantage seem much more key in this game than before. Advice: Don't go into this game expecting old VS mechanics, but be prepared to fall in love with the awesome thematic abilities. |

I absolutely love the game. Sure, its not old VS, but I knew that going in. The game that they did make is a LOT of fun to play, and I think anyone that is able to separate their expectations enough to view it as its own entity will see that. Sure, I might have liked "exhaust" locations, but they designed the super powers around the fact that they were one-time use. And I will be experimenting with different play formats, like PT's in row, or maybe various "flip both PT and Locations face up from row" styles, just for fun. |

^this I plan on playing this as my primary game. It's different enough I wish they had called it something new. Then we wouldn't be doing so much comparing how different it is, but rejoicing about all the similarities. |

I agree with you. Planning on making this my primary go to game. Hoping I can convert and recruit some of my friends that play other card games. My 2 gripes are: 1) The name should not be 2PCG because it sounds stupid and is not enough deviated from the original. Maybe VS Mutated would have been more accurate. 2) Wish there was more flexibility with the resource row as I will miss playing Plot Twists as locations. My 2 elations: 1) Love the change to flight and range creating more tactical analysis. 2) Love the new main character avatar and win condition. So much potential for building around a beloved character and not having to worry about him not seeing enough play time. -bAd- |

Yeah... the 2PCG name is so clunky. I mentioned this before but I would probably add a house rule where you play PTs face up in the row and then turn them face down after you use them. |

I wonder if they play tested that. It does remove the element of surprise, but grants versatility. |

From what I hear... they wanted the focus to be on the characters and their powers... not the resource row. There may or may not be future articles that will discuss the changes and how they were done. Has someone published the full set stats/game text yet? I want to load them into my proxy program so I can test until I get my real cards. |
