Another Saturday morning, another opportunity to skip around artist's sites and see what I can find. Today, French artist Caza. ![]() His site, here, is in French, but there's a short bio here in English if you're interested in more than just the art. (more) |

Now, Caza is an odd kettle of fish, to my senses. I posted the Captain Marvel pic above, because of the four VS cards he's done to date, it's my favourite. I love it. It's especially nifty in foil. In fact, lets see it again, and compare it to the other three. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I won't pretend to be the ultimate connoisseur (sp?) of art, but I know what I like and what I don't. Captain Marvel? Evokes the cosmic nature of her powers (yes, yes, they were generated on Earth, rather than generated by some cosmic doohickey, but the potential... oh, the potential). Vision? The pic showcases, for me, the alien nature of Vizh. Not space alien, but not-human alient. The circuitry markings, the pose, an excellent representation of the character. On the other hand... She-Hulk? Egads. Now, I prefer it to the MOR 3-drop by Dev Adams. Caza's 5-drop has a lot of raw power about it... but this is She-Hulk, not her cousin. We're used to seeing Shulkie as a much more feminine figure. Witness, for example, Alex Garner's MOR 5-drop, or even the alternate art 5-drop by Dan Panosian that came with the FF starter. In each of these we see a much more svelte green-jeans, as opposed to Caza's brutish version. Oh, there's also the alternate art flying kick by Brandon Peterson, but it's pretty much just a squirrel shot (*chuckles*). Maybe it's just that we're spoiled by all the She-Hulk fan art out there. Caza's She-Hulk just didn't do it for me. For your perusal: ![]() ![]() Alex Garner, Dev Adams ![]() ![]() Dan Panosian, Brandon Peterson Yellowjacket? The picture just seems so misidrected to me. Sure, Yellowjacket can do the shrinky-dink thing, but the background distracts so heavilly from the character that all I ever see when I pick up that card is a big, flat, green face. I don't see Yellowjacket at all. Change the background and this could have been a really nifty piece of work - look at YJ and his stings by themselves and they're very cool - but the background just overpowers the picture too much for my tastes. Now unfortunately, you won't find the above Caza pics on his site. I tried. I can't read French, so they may have been hidden somewhere, but I had no luck. I did find a bunch of other nifty stuff, including Tin-Tin (whom I read when I was in the early years of high school), and this nifty Spawn (if you're into Spawn, that is) ![]() So. Caza. In VS terms, two hits and two misses, in my opinion. Here's hoping he does some more VS in the future - I'm willing to endure another Shulkie/YJ if it means I get another Monica/Vizh. |

i totally agree with you on that YJ pic, eerytime i see that card, i still think it is about this green skull guy, i never even see YJ until i look closely. although i gotto disagree with the shulkie pic, shulkie has been drawn and repressented as a being of raw power- look at the recent avengers dissambled and before that, she had a hard time controller her beast inside and would hulk out more than nomral. and while i do prefer the more feminine version of her, i think it is apporpiate to show all sides of her characer. |

Check out the recent She Hulk series - the arc where she goes to fight Tryco Slattterus (and againd when she goes up against Titania) shows her as possessing a lot of raw power (and muscular bulk) while still posessing strong feminity. Even at her feral worst, she's generally been more feminine that that. Meh. Caza's She-Hulk just doesn't do it for me. Of course, that's the joy of art - it may not work for me, but it may work for you - and that's okay. Eye of the beholder and all that jazz. And for the record, Dev Adam's She-Hulk still brings to mind Patrick Swayze in "To Wong Fu, thanks for everything, Julie Newmar" |
