So after a 7PM-4AM poker night, I decided to sleep in and skip Modern. I had built EvilDave's Anti-Exiles (it is awesome against Blink and company BTW) and was prepared to ruin Blink's last stand, but the Poker Gods beckoned me to slumber and Blink smashed face in the Modern Tourney. So with the decision to play Silver came the decision of deck to play. I had spoken to OrangeSodaMan about running a Mystique 1-drop abusing Underworld deck (Meat Market & Satanna FTW) or a Future Foes Big Bully deck, but after much deliberation I chose to run a CaptainCuba original: Knights of the Northern Lights Lady Blackhawk x4 Huntress x4 Talisman x3 Oracle x4 Spiderwoman x2 John Walker x4 Batman x1 Catwoman x3 Sasquatch x1 Weapon Omega x2 Batman x1 Beta Ray Bill x1 Bat Signal x4 Savage Beatdown x4 Flying Kick x4 The Hook-Up x4 Path of Destruction x4 Alpha Flight Reborn x4 Skreeeeeeee! x3 Call in a Favor x3 I preface the match reports with the fact that I had intended to swap out the Talismans for Auroras and the 1 Beta Ray Bill for another 4 drop Bats, but one of the guys who was coming needed a ton of cards to build Wolvie Smash so in setting him up I forgot to do my swaps... Round 1 - OrangeSodaMan - Spidey/Illuminati So we knew eachother's decks...that helped big time. My first 4 cards were, Skreee, Skreee, Walker, and Alpha Flight Reborn so i kept in hopes of keeping the hidden illuminati at bay. I draw into Huntress and Oracle. Awesome. I start swinging straight in with Huntress and am able to stun 2 of his concealed schemers on turn three. Turn 4 brings a Gift Wrapped and Spidey so no attacks for me. I draw into another AFR and after another stallish turn 5 I am able to set up for the kill with Weapon Omega, Catwoman, and USAgent. AFR on Skreee! twice on turn 5 draled the deal as he was never able to assemble the combined members of the Illuminati against me. 1-0 Round 2 - BigDaddyRico - Ghost Rider Legend Burn So Rico is part of my HL so I know his deck pretty well. He added Rigged Explosives to deal with stall, but I knew if he played his board concealed he'd have trouble. Sure enough I draw my curve Lady BlackHawk, Huntress, and Oracle along with Skreee and a Kick. I Oracled and Hook-Uped my way into my main man Walker and went for the kill on 4. Triple Savage Beatdown and double Flying Kick made John W. a sweet 28 attack to get Rico to 3 END. He scooped on turn 5 when I dropped Catwoman. 2-0 Round 3 - Forgot his Name - Inhumans So I get a little nervous when he drops LockJaw on 1 as I think I may be facing Tashton's 12-Man but once I realize he's just running Mono-Inhumans I breathed a little sigh of relief. We exchange early hidden beats until he drops Thing on 4. He swings into Walker to stifle my attack back and takes a decent lead going into turn 5. I double Hook Up into a massive hand and drop Sasquatch in front of USAgent. I team Lady, Huntress, and Oracle into Thing to clear the way for Walker and his hairy friend. I attack directly with Savage, Savage, AFR on Savage, AFR on Savage, Kick, Kick, Path, and Path to make his ATK 39. Sasquatch swings for 11 and that's too much for my stunned but really cool in defeat opponent. 3-0 Round 4 - Forgot his Name Too - Skrull/Inhumans I had seen what I was up against as I had peeped his deck as I walked around, so I knew what the deck was capable of. I wanted odds as I felt I could swing for the fences and win the damage race against his hidden board, but he won the die roll and snatched the first victory of our match. My hand and mulligan were equally bad as missed Lady Blackhawk and had Talisman as opposed to Huntress. Remember that swap I forgot to make? I am able to find Oracle and a second Hook-Up to make up for the lack of punch I needed for the turn 4 kill, and I draw into Walker on turn 4. I decide to go for the win even though he was at 46 life to start the turn. Talisman and Oracle swing for 4 putting him at 42. Walker swings: Path, Path, Path, (bounce Path back with his power) Path, AFR on Path, Kick, Savage Beatdown...I pitch my 5-drop Catwoman to Hook-Up #3 in hopes of hitting ANYTHING and miss. My 39 ATK USAgent gets him to 3 END...sigh...had Talisman been Aurora I would have bounced another Path to my hand to make USAgent a 45 attack FTW. Turn 5 rolls around and he drops Karnak. I basically have one chance. I draw into a Kick and a Skreee! and try to Oracle my way into another Catwoman or Sasquatch or Call in a Favor so I wouldn't have to exhaust Oracle. I miss horribly and am forced to Bat Signal with my 3-drop. I go to grab my Batman - Twilight Vigilante as i can use him to counter swing into the opposing Karnak for a total of 16 damage, but realize 1. I pitched a copy to The Hook-Up on turn 3 and 2. I FORGOT TO SWAP A SECOND COPY IN THIS MORNING!!!!! I decide to play the odds and choose Sasquatch in hopes that he doesn't have a second Extended Family to give Karnak his Cosmic Counter...he does and after the Skrull-Wolvie stabs Sasquatch and Karnak makes USAgent a zero DEF he teams his remaining jerks into me to get me to exactly 0. I couldn't even attack with Oracle to push to turn 6. 3-1 Second Place Finish Luckily the winner had already won a mat, so it slid down to me along with my 6 Boosters. Thanks to lastchance and his crew for running a sweet event. And BOOOOO to all the Exiles Net-Deckers for....net-decking Exiles.dec. CC |

Alpha Flight. Now thats a breath of fresh air. The other guy you played at the finals was ChaosRob489 I know cause he also has a tourney report. Anyway Cuba I'm just wondering; do you think playing Aurora would of been better than Talisman? It seems to me that with a hidden board she could of stayed in play for your kill turn and gotten you yet another pump that could of won you the game. Did you test her at all for your build? I'm curious cause I am planing on building a John Walker abuse deck and I'm thinking of using her instead of Talisman. Any input would be appreciated. |

See first paragraph under the deck list... I fully intended to run her as I had envisioned her in the deck as soon as I laid eyes on her, but since I had not played the deck at HL in ages I never had the opportunity for the swap. Also, Beta Ray Bill is just a dead card, the deck should win on 4 or 5... Lastly, I think Gotham provides the best compliment due to the Hook-Up and Oracle...she just loads your hand up with the blue goodness. I can see where X-Force might be nice with TOV and Black Box, but the hidden board GK provides ensures you have bodies to clear the way for Walker. If I were going Modern I'd probably go Moonstar, Cable, Domino, Walker, and some big 5. Hope that helps! CC |
