So, with the few weeks of anticipation, Saturday finally came, and myself, along with my other fellow Realms crew members were able to get our high tourney VS fix with the SoCal day run by Erick. After trying to come up with a couple of original decks (including a Cap/Wolvie turn 5 smash face, and an SS/Runaways deck) I found myself running a deck that Ludin (Rocketgurl, for you vsrealmers) had lent me a few weeks back, and which I'd fallen in love with; Society Complex 1's 2x Chemo 4x Dr. Polaris 4x Riddler (my hero!) 2's 2x Charaxes 4x Dr. Sivana 3's 1x Dr. Psycho 4x Poison Ivy 4's 4x Gorilla Grodd 1x Sinestro 5's 2x Black Manta 6's 1x Deathstroke the Terminator 1x Mr. Freeze 7's 1x Doomsday 10's 1x Death 1x The Beyonder PT's 4x Agility 4x Straight to the Grave 2x Call in a Favor 2x Have a Blast 3x Messiah Complex 1x Mobilize 2x Going Ape 2x Savage Beatdown 2x Omnipotence Loc's 2x Gorilla City 3x Remote Facility The deck obviously favors being controlling, and wants safe attacks, or one sided stuns while defending, to keep board presence in your advantage. Round 1 Thomas (X-factor) Thomas's X-factor build is one I'm slightly familiar with, and I knew that if I could just keep the pt's out of his hand, I should be golden. My opening hand provided me with just that, as I drew into riddler, sttg, sivana and ivy. Needless to say, I had 3 Riddlers out by turn 4, milling his deck and denying his options. He was forced to underdrop on 5, and that gave me the edge I needed to tuck away Rd 1. 1-0 Round 2 Ken "Kariggi" (Hulk) Now, earlier that morning, Ken had totally smashed my face with a +20 Hulk during our SuperX final match, so I knew I would have to be wary of his Hulks. Luckily for me, Riddler turned up early (I again had 3 out by turn 4) and he underdropped on 4, giving me a slight advantage. That changed on turn 5 when he recruited 5 drop hulk, and smashed face for a quite a bit, and then using righteous anger to ready hulk, and then exhaust him and my 5 to Great Arena. On 6, with my inits, I recruited Deathstroke, and hoped for the best. He again exhausted Hulk to the Arena, exhausting Manta, and putting me at a precarious 4. He then tried to seal the deal by replaying his 5, and stunning Grodd. I Ko'd Grodd to his own ability, to deny the stun loss, and safe attacked, putting him at 7, me at 4. On 7, he boosted Hulk Green King, But he wasn't big enough to get through Doomsday, who sealed me the win. 2-0 Round 3 Andrew (Trinity Money.dec) Andrew is a teammate, and was doing very well with the Trinity. While we hate playing fellow teammates at tourneys, we knew it could happen, and neither held back. In testing, I knew I could beat him, if only I could get Riddler active. Unfortunately, that didnt happen =( Wonder Woman pretty much handed my butt to me, as she continously re-directed effects, and after he bricked my turn 5 attacks, and denied me my 6 drop, he directed the loss to me. 2-1 Round 4 Christine "American Maid" (Exiles.dec) 2 weeks ago, Christine had handed my but to me in the same match up, so I went into the match quite worried, knowing that the only way to win was to deny her her 2's so she couldn't "Common Bond". Lucky for me, Riddler proved again to be the Hero, (or villain) as he continuously shut down her 2's and 3's. Savage on 4 and bricking, along with a double savage on 5, sealed it up for me. (Note; why was it that in most people's testing, Society did bad against exiles? Hitting the 3 cost pt is easy, which shuts down all the "A Finer World" "Clash of Worlds" tomfoolery, and 2's mean no "Common Bonds" or "Beaks save the day" it just seems that a hard mull for riddler, or a way to get riddler, is what you would need.) 3-1 Round 5 Justin (Exiles 5 shenanigans) This was a bit of a nail biter. Justin ran a very different Exiles deck, but it proved tough all the same. He ran Blink! which made my hidden very vulnerable, and scored him some easy damage early on. I stabilized, but completely whiffed on 6, underdropping and hoping for the best. Luckily, he missed as well, which allowed me to drop Doomsday on 7, and gave me just enough firepower to push through for the win. 4-1 Round 6 Patrick (Onslaught, Cyclops, Ghostrider, Back from the dead, First Class intensity) Its always nerve racking playing against Patrick. He's just an all around A-class player, not just in his style and manner, but also in his attitude. His deck was intense, when, on turn 6, almost my entire board was wiped thanks to Ghost rider, it came as no surprise. Luckily for me, I was able to double Messiah Complex to gain life, and further stall the game. Not just that, but on turn 10 (after intense shenanigans including Mr. Freeze activations, and Cyclops exhaustions), I recruited the Beyonder, and he won me the game! Well that, and the fact that Sinestro was in my Ko pile, which allowed me to break formation and deal the damage for the win. Top 8 I was ranked 3rd overall after the 6 rounds, and we went into single elimination matches. Round 7 Luis (Bosom Buddies) Man, did Luis get a ton of cards into his hand. By turn 6, he had the majority of his (all but 9 cards) in his hand, with a few in the Ko'd. Luckily, Riddler shut down the majority, and when I had a full board, to his aurora and Cable. I stunned aurora, and after I showed him the pumps, he conceded. 6-1 Top 4 Round 8 Ludin (MKO) So after having given a super strong showing, my deck finally caved. I missed on 1, 4 and 5, and Ludin had all the right cards, KO'ing my board and kicking me out of the championship game. 6-2 All in all, I had a total blast (and a small headache, 12 hrs of VS FTW!) and got some of the sweetest swag. I got to pick out the mat that I had been desiring for quite some time (Ultimates) and a ton of packs, and even some boxes that Erick was generous enough to give away. It was seriously the most fun I've had at a VS event, and I can't wait for the "Cal Cup" come this late Spring/early Summer. Oh, btw, we also got some EA "Enemy of my Enemy" which totally rock. Now, just to find a GA toolbox to play it in =) |

I still don't know how you won Round 6. From the times I glanced at the game, it looked like he should have been able to do plenty of damage (even through Mr. Freeze and a couple big Messiah Complexes) to kill you before turn 10... But, LOL, The Beyonder getting recruited was hilarious. Great job on winning that match! "Enemy of my Enemy" was a sweet reward.

It was brutal, I sat staring at a hand full of Trouble with Dinosaurs and Hulk Smash all Match, while Riddler locked out my 3's and 4's all game, on 5 he flips Omni calls my only 2 cost pump and draggs me kicking and screeming to turn 7 where I realized Doomsday was Bigger than Hulk, Not one power-up in hand I went down hard. KOing that Grogg kept him above 0, I should have seen it coming but with him having dropped Deathstroke I knew I needed to not lose the biggest character I had in hand, and the 5 let me also drop Mastermind Excello, who I almost forgot to put down after watching the 4 points I needed for the win suicide himself to avoid the damage. I kicked myself after, but am not sure what else I could have done but watch my 6 die at the end of the turn, and lose anyway. By the way awesome matches both times, I look forward to battling you again sir. Edited by kariggi, Feb 10 2009, 04:44 PM.

Yeah I couldn't believe that someone actually recruited the Beyonder. Then again, when you're staring down 8-drop Cyclops, 8-drop Ghostrider, and Onslaught, you don't really have much of a choice. |

Awesome report dude. Your game against Patrick reminds me of my match against Joe. It seems like endurance gain is your Kryptonite, Patrick! |
