I got a PM from someone wanting strategy help on a rush deck. I pointed out some things I thought would improve it, but I also told him I am in no way a "rush master". Does anyone know where there are any good rush deck strategy articles? Something preferably generic, sort of a "weenie primer" (oh, grow up!) if you will.

I'd like to study up on building a better rush deck, especially since I got my ass handed to me by two of them last night.

I wrote two articles on my blog dealing with fast decks, mostly interacting with the hidden area as well.

Hope this helps.

My first response would be to go to the 1-drop expert extraordinaire aka Stu.
My next response would be to find those metagame articles like you mentioned. Did Alex Brown write them or did he stick with draft stuff? Hm ....

I forget your timetable, but I will send you my 4 MEQ Goblin Gliders if it would help.

I build both rush decks and curve decks... I'm no real expert (like I've never really accomplished anything) but one of the keys I go by is to keep the same number of characters you usually use and divide by how many times you want to see them. I can't build a Patrick Y or Alex Brown deck, but I do like consistency. I always run 32 characters, counting tutors, unless it's a reservist deck.

If you're building Shield Burn, for example, there's probably no drops higher than 2 you want to see regularly aside from Wolverine, who is great. So: 4x Wolverine. Do I want 4x Origin Story? Sure. That leaves me with... 26? How about 3x Squirrel, 3x Maria, and 10 each of Shield Agents and Cape Killers. Take the other 28 and put in some attack pumps and Birthing Chambers and other cool stuff.

Not saying that's a polished deck, but that's generally where I start and I polish from there. I'm not really sure where I'd go from there, but it's a good start: from there you can goldfish and test and decide which cards you're seeing too much of and which you aren't always hitting when you need to.

EDIT: I left out the part of the building process where I decide I don't like Nick Fury, Dum Dum, or uh... Spider-Woman.

NIGHT VISION: Avian gets Aggro

I wrote this for Night Vision a while back, I think it's a decent article.

There's also these articles on the Secret Avengers deck I played in Maidstone which involve some ramblings about aggro decks.

I seriously doubt that you are going to find a good How To Build A Good Rush Deck article, since there is a WIDE variety of rush decks. Best thing to do when building one, I think, is to ask, what existing deck is this most like? Skrulls? Moloids? Voltage? Mexican Hardware Store? Shield Burn? Brotherhood Reservist? Quick-Fate? Quick-Syndicate? IG Hidden? 12 Man Inhumans? Etc. Using an existing deck archetype as a model can help you determine how many characters to play at each drop, where to stop your curve, how many tutors to play, how many pumps, etc. (Actually this is decent advice in general, not just for rush decks.) For example, when building IG Hidden, Skrulls would have been an excellent model to work from.

You'll still want to do plenty of testing and tweaking from there, obviously, but the better the choice of model, the less work will be involved in making the deck competitive.

Another important step in building a rush deck is determining optimal strategies for winning on turns 4, 5, and 6 against different deck types. Being able to win on 5 consistently with odd inits is great, but what if you are on evens? Can you win on 4 consistently? If not, can you win consistently on a turn 5 off-init, or will you need to go to a turn 6 init often? If so, how do you beat the control decks that hit their stride on 6? How do you survive turn 5 against opposing rush decks?

Finally, what are going to be the toughest matchups for your deck in the target format, and what is your plan for beating them? In particular, how do you win the mirror?

I think 'hoops hit on my core rush problem (and I didn't actually realize it was my problem til he laid it out).

I'm not quite sure what I want to build, and I guess the guidelines are a bit different for each type of rush deck. I guess I'll come back when I've got a specific build in mind (leaning towards B-hood now, since I never partook in that madness back in the MOR/MXM-reservist days...)

BTW - thanks for all the article links and suggestions everyone, I re-read them all to get a better grasp on rush. I also went to TCGPlayer and looked up a few well known rush decks, just to get a better handle on the overall "formula".
