I finished 5th out of 13, which is pretty good for me. Two of the guys in my group got 1st and 2nd, Mark (with a very cool intricate deck that had 3 7s out on turn 4, abusing Franklin MOR and Cosmic Radation, using TT and FF) and Marc got 2nd, with BH/Avengers reservist. Spud finished 3rd with his deck I think. The one late night twist is that I couldnt build moe/syn, which I had been planning and sorta testing with on MWS, because i was missing too many cards. Wife was sleeping on the couch because our bedroom is too cold without me in it, I'm at the kitchen table staring at my 8 longboxes, thinking.. should I cancel? No... I should just find a deck that I can build in ten minutes, so I just took out all the team up cards from my inhumans/hellfire club deck. Counted 32 characters, 28 plot twists and tried to make sure it all made sense. Packed extras of every plot twist I had with either affiliation on it. Made a dash to finish my deck once I got to Hobby Kingdom. First round was a bye, which bummed me out. I paid Five dollars, I want Five Rounds! LOL. I guess there were four other people who were just as disappointed. It was really no big deal. first match was against marc who finished 2nd, he had avengers/brotherhood rush. I lost by about 20 on turn 5... I made a couple mistakes but I don't know how much making it later would have helped me. I would have needed to gain endurance to make it further. I had a chance to ko senyaka on turn 3 but got unuscione instead because she had more attack at the moment. Regretted the decision for the rest of the game as senyaka burned me for about 10 more endurance. Sans play errors I would have likely lost anyway, Marc's deck was really fast and Blackheart is a little too slow as far as solutions go. Second opponent was gdaybloke, he had x-men/fantastic four which was cool. I hit san on 2, jolen on 3 and blackheart on 4. I kept all my guys hidden until 4, which chapped him pretty bad because he wanted to draw with Luke Cage. I tried to get a free swing on Luke Cage with Jolen, ended up wasting a search card to try to power up out of trouble after a Turnabout, for him to just play another. Maybe it was important that he got rid of those anyway, they would have caused problems later. Turn 4, his init. He had Luke 2, thing 3 (MVL) and Prof X. My board is all hidden, he declares all his guys into my face. I flip and activate Himalayan Enclave and move Blackheart over. He tries Luke and Prof into Blackheart, I activate Blackheart to murder Thing (he dies!) and mutual stun on X. On swingbacks, I put Jolen into Luke for a stun, then San into Gday's face. He recovers X to save the endurance/draw a card... and I KO San in response to Raising Hell. I don't think he ever really recovered from that. He played Thing on 5 and I played Shinobi (with Shaw Ind!) who was big enough to deal with his huge characters and Clobbering Times. We both whiffed on 7, if he had hit it would have been a lot different obviously. Round 4 was Anna and a Lost City deck. She must have been having a bad game because she missed until 4. She had Emma Frost on deck and it hurt me to do it (LOL) but I had to ko her immediately. Can't be having 9 def 4 drops. Too much. I had an OK board - San, Jolen, Frederic Van Roehm and Shinobi on my init on 5... he hit and stunned back but those 3 all swung in. Turn 6 it was her init and she had mystique mxm 6 drop and jean grey phoenix rising with 2 counters. I had Shinobi and a fresly played magneto visible, with Magneto behind Shinobi. She tried to attack Shinobi with Mystique so i moved him, then she attacked Magneto with Mystique. I waited for her to pump over my 14/14 Magneto with her 13/11 Mystique, she did. I played Waking the Ancestors on Mystique, then stunned Magneto for his own effect on her 5, ending her turn 6 init without an attack. It was awesome. Sebastian came out and the game was over. Round 5: captain spud with his jli/tnb.. lol everyone loves teaming up with brotherhood in that format, i played brotherhood 3x out of 4. He said he wanted to rush but didnt like winning before turn 6. Spuds deck wasnt as quick as it could have been (generally one character per turn) but I made a play error early on. I had a Waking in hand on turn 2 when he had two tnbs face up. I should have rowed so i could use it on Booster Gold, I didnt want to play it out of hand because i was counting on great refuge to hit blackheart on 4. By the time I realised this it was turn 2 attack step, waaaay too late. It would have saved me 7 life. I dont know if that would have made the difference, I managed to last until 6 against his deck which is something I guess, considering he had two TNBs up on turn 2... and that I didnt play a visible character until Shinobi on 5. One thing I had really considered doing is running Selene instead of Maximus, I should have, I dont really care in my deck if people reinforce... but at 4am the effects looked equal to me and Maximus 14 atk would have been more useful. I should have used the lifegain in a couple of the match ups, should have been thinking of how slow my deck was and how much quicker everyone else was likely to be. A pretty good day for cards overall. i made a couple of mistakes that put me out of games i may have lost anyway... but i made some really cool plays like the magneto/waking thing and waiting for gday to recover prof x before trying to ko him. We had mev draft. I was really excited because I didnt think there was going to be any, and I f***ing love draft. Or sealed. Went 2-2 in the mev draft but mainly because i went exiles and kept forgetting if X-Factor or X-Force was my secondary team, so all of my best blue was for affiliations that I had 1-2 characters for. It was pretty stupid but I was exhausted. I also drafted all the X-Statix characters I could because I uh... wanted the cards. It was a lot of fun, playing against Mark (1st place Mark) and Pablo really drove home how much fun it is to play Vs against people that love to play it. The only people left playing, for the most part, are people who love to play it. You could say that it means all the competition is gone but I'm a glass half-full kind of guy and to me it looks like we seperated the cream from the chaff. While we drafted gday went home to get all his spare c/uc. i was looking through getting some cards for decks i have - I never got any mun so i wanted to grab 4x big three and 4x black bolt for my avengers and skrull decks. I mentioned offhand to gday that i had never bought any dc, only marvel - so he said "ok cool. take these six longboxes, i want to get rid of them." Common playsets for every dc set up to legion, with 2-3 of every uncommon splashed in... doubled my card pool. Went back to work yesterday and asked one of the kids I work with (I work at a group home) if I could build him a Vs deck, and he asked for "a Starman deck" which I thought was really, really funny. He shall have it! Starman and all his JSA Friends! Also bears mentioning that participation(!) was 30 MEQ cards. Special Props: Hobby Kingdom for being such an awesome venue Gday for the 6(!!!) longboxes The white labcoats the Pokemon TOs wore Sorry if this was long, I've never written a TR before.
