lastchance, I chose every piece of artwork for the cards and I ended up using what artwork best worked. I had over 125 images put into a file to use. The hard thing was finding artwork that looked good but had not been used on prior cards. I actually had to use artwork from two prior cards because there was no usable images other than what had been used for that character. later, Kj |

lastchance - I complaint to KK about the art as well not only because of how some of them looked but also because he used art that has already been used in MEV cards. He simply said that if I managed to find better art he would change them without hesitation. So I went and looked for artwork, and I couldn't find any that represented the character as intended. If you can find artwork form some of the cards please send us a link, if KK approves it then I guess we can change the ones we have used. |

Card rarity is a strange thing. Most novice players assume rares are "better" than commons, but this is not the case. I can only speak generally about card rarity, because every card design team will have slightly different reasons, but they are connected to these general rules: 1) Rare cards are more powerful than commons. Not necessarily better, and in the end may not wind up being as powerful as the designers thought, but the most powerful effects (tap to kill a character, destroy all types of cards in play) are found on rare cards. 2) Rare cards are unique, and you wouldn't want too many of them in a sealed deck (you don't want Superman, BBBS in sealed despite his power, because what are the odds that you'll be able to recruit him?). Commons are more easily used, and need to appear in greater quantities in sealed play. 3) Rare cards are specialized. While lots of commons fill the same role of small creatures with neat effects, rare cards do something special. And generally, you won't want that effect to be used every turn, you'll save it for your endgame. 4) Rare cards are complicated. You don't want the game to be full of very text-heavy cards, because that discourages players. However, you don't want every card to be simple, because then gameplay is dull. If your most complicated cards are rare, they exist without overpowering new players. |

Why make things a rare? Edit: Ignore this, read ^^^ Some pretty good reasons include: a) power level b) Accessability [all teams? One team? threshold? random cost?] c) to stay out of Limited format [why play 1-2 punch when you can play Savage] d) legacy e) difficulty level [tons of text? tons of powers? complicated?] Edited by Orange_Soda_Man, Feb 25 2009, 03:49 PM.

Same pictures... not stretched, blurry, or with captions (that bothers some people). ![]() ![]() ![]() (Not the same pic of Sunfire AOA, but I think this one works just fine) ![]() (I don't have the Galactus templates in my magic set editor so I didn't bother with the text for this one) |

Thanks to all for the lessons in rarity fellows, I appreciate it. Perhaps now I can start making my very own Fantasy set. Latschance it appears as if you have a better program than KardKrazy has for fitting and editing pictures, or you just have plain more experience. I really wouldn't dare to say what the official reason for your pictures looking better is so perhaps you should discuss the program you used or settings or whatever it was, I am sure he would appreciate the info. As for the Famine picture, we can't use that one because it's the art for another card in the set. Thanks for it though. |

Well, almost all of the reasons I listed only apply to cards distributed in packs. I don't see how they matter for fantasy cards, unless you worry about cards that reference rarity, just want to be as accurate as possible, or consider it an "audition" for becoming a pro designer. I always used Photoshop to make cards. It's pretty easy to get/make blank templates, then you just make the picture the bottommost layer and drag it around behind the card template until it's properly framed. If you shrink the picture, Photoshop ensures that it doesn't lose quality. |

Hmmmm, I might have overlooked a couple of cards when it came to re-doing the art and getting them proportioned as well as possible. As for 5-Drop Wolverine, I actually like his word bubble on there as it states: "You summoned me." I don't know I like the feel:). As for the Apocalypse Avatar I also like the one I did but I will give you that the Age of Apocalypse you used is better proportioned. I might have to change up that pic a little so it looks more like the one you came up with=). later, Kj |

OOPS! just noticed that Ireland posted his post 16 minutes before I did. I was distracted and had the page open longer, I swear!

I wanted to point out that Blues686 had today's second round of previews but he is too busy with work to be able to do it. It's cool though as he will hopefully be able to do the preview later this week. But for now I will give out this card as a *bonus* preview:![]() Enjoy, Kj |

Isn't that what the flavor text is for? I personally don't like the speech balloons. I think it distracts from the iconic presentation of the card art. |

So I take it you like how it looks now. After reading your post I agreed about the word bubble although I did not find it that distracting. But check out the image in Shadow's blog now. I do find it to be more pleasing to the eyes:): http://forum.tcgplayer.com/blog.php?b=353 later, Kj |

I use Magic Set Editor. Just search it out on google and download it. It's extremely easy to use. I personally don't feel there is any reason why any art has to be stretched or pixelated. Work with the art you can find and if it's not working out for you then move on to a different piece of art. With the Magic Set Editor you do have to crop it using their program, but if your using the custom setting it'll never look stretched out. It will also let you focus a little more on the picture and take out some blurriness. I would strongly suggest using this program because it's obvious you want to get the attention of as many players as possible and it only helps to be and look as professional as possible. DON'T get me wrong, mistakes will be made and the nice thing is that you can always go back and correct those mistakes! When I put up my Watchmen fans set I got feedback and people let me know what mistakes they found or what they felt needed or could be changed and I pretty much went back and corrected these issues accordingly. In the end the cards were better for it. From the stand point of someone who is interested in new cards to play with, I'm going to be less excited about cards the less professional looking they are. If I am then what about the players who you ARE trying to win over? Just some thoughts. Edited by lastchance, Feb 25 2009, 10:10 PM.

Much better, but it is just my personal opinion. :) Thanks for considering it. For me it's like comparing the cover art from comics today with that from the Silver Age when they used speech balloons. I'm at a loss for words to accurately describe the difference it makes in the impact, but they stopped doing it for a reason and the card art to me is very similar to comic book cover art. Maybe it is just as simple as that in real life we don't have speech balloons above our head and as they have brought cover art to a level of realism it would lessen that dramatic impact to see speech balloons. |
