Hey gang, crazy Stu here.

I don't know how many of you appreciate how much insanely outstanding original art is floating around on the interwebs in the form of the Marvel Masterpieces sketch cards.

Here are some samples:

http://fullbodytransplant.wordpress.com/2009/02/24/2112/

http://fullbodytransplant.wordpress.com/2008/12/03/thursday-thirteen-wicked-visual-bliss/

http://fullbodytransplant.wordpress.com/2008/11/25/pick-a-card-any-card/

I know that those are all under the same umbrella of controversy regarding copyright laws, but they are also a solid source of fresh imagery for fan-based new Vs. System cards.

That is all.

Very nice artwork.

I noticed (I forget which) in some fan-designed cards, that someone was putting the illustrator for the cards on them. While I think this is great (and why I always included it in my database when available), I don't think it was accurate (illustrator: sonicc?).

I would posit that there is as much ability to be entangled in a copyright issue with the content owner (Marvel, DC, Darkhorse, etc.) as there is with the illustrators, and redistributing their work with permission. I would recommend for any fan art to accurately depict the artist, if they are going to include it.

Some of it's pretty good, specifically the second set of the first link. Other than that, the stuff is pretty "meh" for me. I feel like I would have a better time doing my own art for cards than using some of those. Not to knock your efforts though Stu.

I can see that.

The ones I picked are very specifically chosen for my personal taste.

If you want eye-popping stuff more suited to your own eyes, go to deviantart.com and search for Marvel Masterpieces.

It will blow you away.

I like the idea of fan art for fan sets. It makes the whole thing feel a little more DIY. I can see where some people might not dig it as much, especially depending on the style. But the Dwarf wouldn't mind it at all.

BTW - LOVE that Spider-Ham was in that first set. [grin2]

There's definately some good stuff there. Just so my sentiments are clear though, I wasn't putting the ones you showed down because they're not photo-realistic representations (because since the subjects don' exist, that would be pretty difficult). I'm trying to put this in a way that doesn't make me sound like an "art-snob". I guess I'll say that the stuff just isn't dynamic enough for me.

Again, not trying to knock any body, just saying what I think.

Are we allowed to use art from users at DA?

All the normal copyright laws apply, but most everyone there will be glad to give express consent if we use links for credit.

In this case, I assume UDE holds the rights as well, even for the one-of-a-kind original sketch cards.

Hey ccgdb.com - That would have been me! You can tell because I've got that very card in my signature. Just letting you know... I found that art for Rorschach on a site dedicated to fan art and the only name that was listed was sonicc so that is what I used. Once and awhile I've even noticed this use of one word names when UDE was still producing the game.

I think it's important to credit the person who's art your using for a fan made card. I think it helps keep up appearance's by making the cards look as close as possible to when UDE was making them and if someone sees the artist's name it's more likely they'll go an look up other stuff the artist has done hopefully making them some money or at least getting them some more recognition!

Also notice that I still put all copyright, art, and trademarks belong to DC Comics at the bottom, too. Even though we're using their art without permission or paying for it I don't want other people to see it and think they can get away with mass producing it or something. I think it's helpful and healthy to give credit where credit is due because what we are doing is a form of free advertisement for these business's and artists!

Really good art, I've been looking through these on the dEviantArt site

One thing, the artists often talk of getting their cards 'approved', do you know what they mean by this (approved by who and for what?), is it a competition to deisgn cards to be made by Marvel or am I getting myself confused?

Glad you dig it. I can stay there surfing that stuff for a whole afternoon.

I figure the "approval" is either UDE or Marvel or both want to check the original art before they release it. Some artists have taken the characters to some very funky places.

Here's Mysterio playing hockey:

Good times.
