Sorry in advance, as I know something similar lik this has been talked about, but my buddy wants this question posted as he wont take my word for it until I get confirmation. He had a character (I believe it was the Gambit 6 drop) that had a payment power of "discard a card, stun target character", in response to that power I played a plot twist that required me to "remove a character from the game, get this..." So after discarding the character card, he picks up his card he just discarded and said "Ah so you are negating it" and puts the card back into his hand. I went on to tell him that he still attempted to use the power but there's no longer anyone there, so he has to keep the card in his KO pile as part of the payment power. Thats when the "post it up on the site for the answer" part came in... If Im wrong, please explain. |

There are instances where your friend is correct, but they have nothing to do with payment powers. Take World War III, from DJL: "Play only during your attack step. KO any number of non-stunned Injustice Gang characters you control, then KO any number of characters with combined cost less than the number of characters you KO'd." If the plot twist is negated, the whole effect would be negated. |

508.2a If the effect specifies targets, check the legality of its targets before attempting to resolve the effect. If all of its targets are illegal, negate the effect. (See rule 509.) Otherwise, resolve the effect. 509.2 If an effect is negated, the entire effect is negated. A player does not get any refunds on any costs he or she paid for an effect that is negated. These quotes might hold more water. |
