NorCal VS Day
August 22, 2009

Location:
Empire's Comic Vault

Address:
2357 ARDEN WAY
SACRAMENTO CA 95825
(916) 924-0775

Time: 11am until 8 or 9pm

Events:

The day will begin with a Bring Your Own Two Teams variation tournament.
1. All players are allowed to construct a GOLDEN AGE deck with any cards you want, but those with an affiliation mentioned MUST reference one of the two affiliations you choose.
2. All characters that have one of your two listed affiliations are considered teamed up. (Non-affilated characters are OK to use, but do not get the benefit of a team up since they are unaffiliated.)
3. Dual affiliated characters, or those that mention an affiliation in the text that is NOT one of your chosen two affiliations are ok to use as long as that character card possesses one of the two affiliations you chose. (Or it could be unaffiliated and mention your chosen affiliations. If the card was unaffiliated and mentioned a team that was not one of your chosen affiliations, you could not use it. No example comes to mind though...)
4. The Counsel's updated banned list (which includes Blink 3 drop from MEV) is in effect.

After that event is done, we will have two more events.

There will be an 8 man draft where we have invited the World Champion to attend. The top qualifiers from local events on August 2nd and 8th along with the top 3-4 players from the BYOTT will qualify for the draft.

We will be drafting a newer set, but the set we are using will not be revealed until the draft starts.

Those who do not qualify for the Draft will play in a Super Cross-Over Sealed event.

The entry fee for the whole day of playing is only $20...that's both the constructed tournament AND the sealed or draft events.

Prizes:

First place in the 8 man draft will receive a $50 gift card.

First place in the Super Cross-Over Sealed will win a Play Mat (from those we have available) or other prizes depending on the number of entries we get. (It is possible that if we have 40+ players that the winner of the Super Cross-Over Sealed could win a $25 gift card instead.)

All players will receive some sort of prize just for participating.

There will be random door prizes as well, including , t-shirts, play mats, limited edition (MAA, DCX, MUL, MEQ) or EA cards (some of which are rarer like EA Garth), starter decks, deck tins, packs of cards or a choice from available rare cards. It is likely that ALL players will win some sort of door prize.

We are expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 players to attend this event.

For those who may need to make arrangements for lodging:

Residence Inn Sacramento Cal Expo
1530 Howe Avenue
Sacramento, California 95825 USA
Phone: 1-916-920-9111
Toll-free: 1-800-218-7214

For two people to stay at the Residence Inn is around $89.00 a night (for two adults/1 bed). There is lots of food nearby. Within 2 miles of the location of the event. There is also a large Mall nearby.

Red Lion Hotel Sacramento at Arden Village
1401 Arden Way
Sacramento, CA, 95815
866-539-8430

For two people to stay it is $66.75 a night (for two adults/1 bed). This location is within walking distance to a large Mall and is about 2.5 miles from the event location.

We are willing to arrange a carpool for those who may need a ride (like in case of flying into Sacramento) or possibly even a ride from the airport to the hotel if needed. (You would need to make arrangements in advance.)

There will also be a number of comic related specials that the store owner will make available to only those playing in the tournament. I will have more information on the specials once we get closer to the actual date of the event.

Questions? Please feel free to post them below, or to send me an e-mail to seanthebaldman@hotmail.com. (I do not check the forums alot, so sending an e-mail is the best way to get a hold of me...but if it's a question that you think many would need to know the answer to, then please post it here.)

We look forward to seeing those of you who can come at the event!

hey guys Adam here,

I agree with TDB about the format but i am also planning on bringing something fun. At first I wanted to bring some shanagins and go for gold but I feel I'll end up running one of my favorites. just because I man never to get to play it again in a tourney of this scale.

I say lets have some fun, If Brian brings Arkam/Brotherhood with generics I might accidently push his cards of the tables.......what it was an accident.

regardless I'll be there for the last championship, dunno about the qualifiers though.

[ninja] out!

Huh?

I think we'd have to reconsider the location if there are going to be this many people. How many people have let you know are coming?

Yeah - some of my guys were not "feeling" the format either, but that likely won't stop them from coming. I'll double check with them.

Adam/"Dawn" - You playing Cap or Doom? ;)
(Not that I have any room to talk, my last 3 tourney decks were all Cap based!)

The deal with the format:

BYOTT with the standard rules (requiring all cards reference one of your two teams) boils down to everyone playing some sort of League of Assassins, Brotherhood or MK decks.

I wanted to see some variety in the decks, and for everyone to be able to play their favorite team up decks.

Standard BYOTT is great for seasoned players, but let's face it, everyone wants to be able to play and compete at an event like this, so I wanted the format to be as accessable to everyone as possible.

So if you have a traditional BYOTT deck, you can make modefications, or play with it as is. My hope is that it will not be variations of the same three decks that take the top places and that we will see some original construction and play.

And if not, at least players have the option to play something a little different than something they may already have sitting around or might have used when the original BYOTT format was played.

With the original BYOTT format I witnessed matches that were not fun due to the League of Assassins variation decks taking away affiliations and making matches too fast and very predictable. I was hoping the local community was up to a challenge and wasn't looking to just dust off old decks that had already been played and tested. I know you guys are great at deckbuilding, so I figured it wouldn't be too difficult to come up with something new and devastating.

And that would also allow us to post a couple new deck lists once the tournament was over...for both winning and interesting decks.

I am sorry if it seems like a hassle...I figured you guys would enjoy the challenge.

And it's cool Adam, I have worked with Ben on the arrangements and he will be moving a large number of the older comics bins for us to have enough room for extra tables. But you can always play next door=)

Aw crap - so he'll be drunk and shirtless by lunchtime? (Not sure why, just because this tourney is in Sac, I thought things would be any different [laugh] )

Sean, Miguel and I talked about the format the other day and we totally see where you're coming from.

On the flip side, decks starting with:

4x Puppet Master
4x Press the Attack
4x Omnipotence

Is about as fun, and considerably less interactive then getting Babeled every turn.

Gambit07: Do you plan on bringing any people with you?
