NorCal Vs Day - Warbound

My name is Shawn, and I play a game of cardboard cards with superheroes on them.

So, Norcal VS day.

Those of us in Reno have a small but still semi-passionate group of players who come together every weekend to play games, beat up on each others and generally make discouraging remarks about each other's deck.

So, when the Norcal Vs day was announced, we all decided to head down in order to see if we actually know what we're all doing. So, after some extensive testing, revisions, another couple games, tears and hair tearing, more revisions, and finally just saying "f**king it all, I'll take whatever is fun," we all headed down.

I was bringing down my Warbound. I had thought about teaming them up with Weapon X, or X-statix, or even Marvel Knights, but had decided to just go with what I know.

Warbound to the WorldBreaker
2x Rick Jones
4x Miek
4x Hiriom
4x Hulk (Green Scar)
3x Hulk (Gladiator)
4x Korg
4x Hulk (The Green King)
2x Hulk (Sakaar'Son)
1x Hulk (WorldBreaker)

4x Imperial Dreadnaught
2x Mobilize
3x Have a Blast!
4x Hulk Smash!
4x Warbound to the End
4x Pathetic Attempt
4x Strongest One There Is
4x Bloodsport
4x Righteous Anger

A straightforward "No reinforcement, I'm invulnerable, I'm big" deck.

Although there were many entertaining moments on the trip down to this place we call "California" (a trip most people in reno have done many times), I'm just going to skip ahead, same myself the embrassement of explaining how many time we got lost, and just jump straight to the games. I apologize to my opponents for any inconsistencies in these reports. I was functioning on no sleep for the last couple of days, and had just driven 2 and a half hours, so most of saturday was a blur. Luckily I had written some notes at dinner, so hopefully this will be semi-truthful.

My first game was against Robert Pack, who was running Avengers. He ended up winning the initiative, but decided to go second.

Turn 1 saw the drop of Iron Fist, who got to punch me the face.

Turn 2 had him drop Captain America, who failed his rally. I missed Miek, and prepared to get beat on a little more. Five more damage, and he started to get an early game lead.

Turn 3 saw us start turning things around. I got Hiriom, where he missed his drop. However, a Cap's Shield bounced off of Hiriom's head, and all I could do was Imperial Dreadnaught after his attack to give Hulk invulnerability.

Turn 4 was another Captain America on his side, where I dropped the Green Scar. He swung in with Capt, who threw the shield at Hulk, confusing the big fellow. However, two power-ups meant that Capt bounced off of Hulk, and an Imperial Dreadnaught stunned Hulk, gaining me four and stunning Iron Fist.

Turn 5 saw Korg join us, while Spiderman joined the Avenger's side of the field. This Spiderman normally poses me with a problem, removing powers being his game. Robert tried removing Korg's powers, but it was a Pathetic Attempt. At least, that was the card I used to stop it. Korg swung into Spiderman, and with Spidies earlier tricks ignored, he and Korg beat each other into mutual submission. Capt bounced his shield off of Hulk's head again.

Turn 6 was a bit rough for him, as he missed the drop entirely. I got the Green King, however, and was ready to beat on him a bit. Robert had put Spiderman and Capt in the back row, and threw the Shield. Hulk was tired of this game, however, and another Pathetic Attempt meant Hulk was coming for him. Spidey might be the fastest, but Hulk is still the strongest one there is, and he kicked in Spidey's teeth a few times. A Righteous Anger meant that Hulk got to kick in Capt's teeth also, and we went into 7 with me strongly in the lead.

Turn 7 saw me miss a drop, while Hercules joined his Spiderman. No Capt meant no shield, but a quick reinforcement meant that I did minimal damage to Spidey.

Turn 8 is a rough turn for me against Avengers. Sentry joins his side, and without negation, I tend to lose. I dropped Worldbreaker, and we stared at each other for a moment. If I didn't have negation, he was going to wail on me. If I did, he was in trouble for losing Sentry. Robert decided to test it, and removed Sentry. Unfortunately for him, a Righteous Anger meant that not only didn't Sentry remove Hulk, but his field died, and Hulk got to hit him in the face for 20. As Robert only had twenty life left, that pretty much ended round one with a win in my favor.

Game Two

David Reed - Insanity

A little background first. Dave is another player from Reno, and should probably be THE player from Reno. Dave is the one who got me into VS, gave me a lot of cards that I needed for my first deck, and generally has lead myself and a lot of the other guys through how this game works. We also have playtested each other a lot, so when it was announced that we would be playing each other, we both kinda sighed. Dave was playing Revenge Squad/Arkham Inmates, and yes, he was playing Insanity. And that deck only works for Dave. Half the time.

Dave won the initiative and decided to take second turn, knowing that I prefer evens. He's like that sometimes.

Turn 1 saw him miss his drop, and he started building for two before I'd even finished. He knows my decks well enough to know I don't normally play one drops.

Turn 2 saw a Joker, while I once again missed Miek or Rick Jones. A little Damage to the face didn't really bother me, though.

Turn 3 saw him drop Professor Ruin, a good way for him to go get Beside Myself, while I dropped Hiriom. I decided that stunning Ruin isn't the best plan, so I swung into Joker. However, Dave had Hostage Situation, which allowed him to go get Beside Myself.

Turn 4 saw Dave miss his flip for Beside Myself, and he dropped another Joker. I dropped Hulk, and Dave swung into me for a bit. Long story short, Hiriom was stunned, Hulk ignored damage, and Dave took a bit back for trying to hurt Hulk.

Turn 5 saw Korg hit the board. Unfortunately, Dave missed his drop. This meant that Dave took a lot of damage from me swinging.

Turn 6 was even more of a disappointment, with Dave missing another drop, and me dropping Green King. A pumped up Green King, backed up by Korg, meant that I closed up the game.

This sadly was the second game Dave had lost (yeah, I'd paired down, he'd paired up), and also the second game he'd played against one of us from Reno. We were hoping he'd move on from there, but he was unfortunately paired up against another one of us later, and didn't end up doing well. However, he really enjoyed coming down, and we all enjoyed picking up our latest comics.
