I played some VS yesterday.![]() The format was Bring Your Own Two team with two generics. I had a lot of ideas of what I wanted to play, but I basically knew I wanted to play Doom. Rush decks can't beat Reign of Terror, and control has trouble with Doom 4 and Kristoff. I really wanted to mix it up with a MEV team. I mean, the first set of the game is broke because they have no idea what they were doing, and the last set is broke because they knew exactly what they were doing and power crept... so combine them and ding ding ding Winner! Yeah? I asked Brian about some deck advice. He brought up a Sage/Bad Press prison deck he introduced me to that I have always loved. Sage + fates + Royal Decree to fix curve and row Bad Press + Maximus the Mad for game over. I have a huge love affair of Sage, somewhere along the lines of Terrax and Kate Kane. I was fooling around and wondered "What other ways can we lock?" ![]() (Who's also an X-Men.) My thinking. - If you want to lock you need to do it early. - If you need to lock early, you need Exiles. - Exiles can't rush fast enough without Blink. - Xavier's School and Panoptichron work well with Proteus and Vulcan... but also Mimic and Puppet Master. So I ended up with a deck that was simultaneously trying to ramp up to higher resource counts while also trying to keep them low. Kinda contradictory, but it sort of works I think. My list: 4x Mimic - Earth-42 4x Proteus - Earth-58163 4x Puppet Master-Philip Masters 3x Vulcan - Gabriel Summers 3x Miguel O'Hara <> Spider-Man - Earth-6375 1x Forge - The Maker 1x Gambit - Le Diable Blanc 1x Iceman - Jack Frost 1x Sage-Xavier's Secret Weapon 1x Professor X-Headmaster 1x Cyclops - Man of Action 1x X-23 - Genetic Miracle 1x Emma Forst, Ice Queen 1x Rictor - Julio Rictor 1x Siryn - Sonic Scream 1x Sunfire-Shiro Yoshida 1x Cable - Temporal Traveler 4x Press the Attack 4x Enemy Of My Enemy 4x Concussive Force 3x Mobilize 2x A Finer World 1x Call in a Favor 4x Panoptichron 4x Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters 1x Birthing Chamber 1x Ego Gem, Unique * Infinity Gem My search base is fubar'd as hell, but: - Mobilizes gets everyone but Puppet Master and can't be played with him in play. - Call in the Favor can be played without any guys, but helps them. - A Finer World nabs locations and has no discard, but requires one RP. Against control, the plan is to Vulcan lock then play a bunch of four drops - I have many of them - and win. It's the plan anyhow. Against rush, where Vulcan is much too slow, the plan is to be a short X-Stall deck. Cable with a single Press the Attack is three attacks, which is 39 damage. He also flies to ensure maximum breakhrough. I figure you can randomly pick up eleven END through random attacks and stun backs. Up until tournament day I was still undecided. I liked my deck but it seemed so cumbersome. I also brought a Doom deck that splashed GK for negation, Alfred, and Fate control, and a Doom/X-Men deck that was savage. But I decided f**k it; lets go with something less orthodox and more fun. . . . Hahaha... real 'fun'! Anyways, the tournament was on last Saturday. I was hoping to bring four other people with me, but it didn't happen. A shame, because I really miss cruising out with the Bay Area VS players. Sigh. I did have one faithful companion who made the trip w/ me. ![]() Anyways, this is the first time I've been to Sacramento and for some reason I'm pretty suprirsed at how nice of a city it is. I'm told Sacramento has some pretty thugged out parts... which was definitely nowhere near our cardshop. Our tournament locale is at a huge pink building that is a bigger eye sore then my deck. I hit the breaks, get honked at, and pull into Empire Comics. "Welcome to NorCal VS Day." is posted on the front door. Sweet. Ironically, however, I am greeted by moses and a few of his gnarly homeboys: ![]() Sweet! I go around and try to pick up a few more cards. Before long: ![]() The tournament ends up being 32(!) people which is exactly the amount of tables and chairs we have. 32 people wow! That's the biggest tourney I've been to in recent memory. Isn't that amazing Baldman? ![]() Round One - Underworld/Brotherhood Usually, I am pretty good with names, but for this tournament I can't remember any. In fact, I didn't realy do much casting, photography, or remembering simply because I was so excited to play VS again. I do remember that I am a little worried because I am unable to set up my shift lock early, nor do I have a Puppet Master. I do have the Panoptichron engine along with i I'm feeling pretty smart that Vulcan beats is plan C in my deck. I'm such a savvy deckbuilder- - unfortunately, this turns out to be a recurring theme in the tournament. 1-0 Round Two - Avengers/X-Men I don't remember a lot about this game. I hit Puppet Master on turn two and I'm feeling pretty good when his two is Bishop, Age of Apocalypse grabbing X-Men Assemble. My turn three is Iceman, while his turn three is Gambit Street rat. A little annoying but... tap tap. Turn four I have Rogue. He has Iron Man, Mighty Avenger. Tap tap. Anyhow, I do a lot of tapping in between all my tricks and Concussive Force an make it toward the end game. He has an eight drop, the Sentry, no less which makes things a bit more dicey - since he can just shoot Vulcan. One thing about Vulcan is that since the plan is to stop the game at turn five, you auto trump the trinity. They can't play Omni, and PA is pretty much meaningless since they're not really moving toward anything. I didn't Vulcan lock him so I kind of have to think a little bit on it. I need him to blow up Sentry so I can shift in Vulcan and finish him. I am at a pretty high life total on turn eight and tap everyone but the Sentry. My board is exhausted and he attacks me with Sentry... and flips Carrying the Torch to make him Wolverine and flips a Berserker Rage. I blow a Press the Attack to stop the readying attack. I'm not sure is this the right move - if he has multiple rages it makes sense to stop it ASAP, but if he didn't I could've used the Press the Attack next turn. As it is next turn, I play mimic Zap his Sentry, he zaps another guy in response. I can't finish with Vulcan, and I scoop because I can't tie up his guys again for another turn. Brian and Ludin both point out some things I can do better. Brian says I should have played out the three Mimics I had on turn nine, each copying Sentry but sniping another one of his guys. This would force him to eventually use Sentry, after which I could've dented his board and had active Vulcan. Ludin says I copied Puppet Master too much, and should've instead, copied Iceman. Both valid points. : ( 1-1 I take a leak in between rounds and am amazed: ![]() Round Three - X-Men/Teen Titans He has no plays on turns one and two, while I have Mimic, Miguel O'Hara, and Rogue shifted. He has Beast Boy on turn three, while I match him with Miguel. Swing! Turn four he Mobilizes to get Zatara. The rest of the game is pretty uneventful.. tap tap tap tap tap. Turn four he has Zatara, and he proceeds to play double Call to the Wild. Turn five he has Cyclops, Ultimates. I don't remember what happens, but he manages to get a swing with Beast Boy, and proceeds to cycle through three versions of Beast Boys in his resource row. Turn six, he plays Longshot naming Korind'r... and ends up hitting Mobilize. Presumably, the Korind'r he's looking for is the DOR six drop - which has good synergy with Zatara. I'm poopin in my draws at the mention of Korind'r - the seven drop would wreck me - so I proceed to Vulcan look him. I can't remember the rest of the game, but I just tap all his guys and double Press Cable to win. He is not amused. 2-1 Round four - Doom/IG The last time I played Omar was a Golden Age tournament in SoCal where I applied Sage Bad Press beats. Turn 1 Boris? I'm feeling pretty good. According to Super theory fighter, Sage + Vulcan should give me the win. Omar's draw is actually pretty weak, with his turn three being a Penguin, but he has Doom four. My draw is pretty light but I do manage to suspend Vulcan off of Proteus. Omar however is not impressed, and proceeds to Reign my board in and kills me with triple All Too Easy. : ( I'm a really big fan of DIG. I love its mid-game where you can either Circe to boosted Scarecrow, or Scarecrow to Circe with Boris to fetch All Too Easy. I also think I overestimated Vulcan's power against Doom decks. Not just All Too Easy, but a clone Doom deck can put multiple Doom three and fours out of Clash. 2-2 Round five - X-Men/BH Doesn't sound like it, but... I'm actually playing against another Sage/Vulcan deck. He however, has taken it a different direction which is with rush down. I saw another game where he locked a player down at three with Vulcan, Kaboom and Sage. I am a beneficiary of him shifting Vulcan to keep us at five, since that means he's not playing guys to harass me. He does have Iceman, Snowman which is really good against my deck whom I am able Unfortunately, because both of our decks are designed to operate under a low resource count I really can't do any good attacks. I try building up some characters with Forge, but he has Sonic Gun to shut that down. Eventually I have 10 guys in play and Siryn. Tap tap. 3-2 Round six - IG/HFC He curves out from one. But I draw Xavier's School. Tap, tap. 4-2 I don't make top 5. So, after this tournament we play Supercrossover Sealed while the top five plus others go to draft. My super crossover Sealed pool is pretty standard. But I decide to play some sort of wanky off-curve rush build because I have Faces of Evil. I end up losing in the second round to a curve of Wolverine, Logan, Darkseid, Apokoloptian OPressor, and Deathwatch, Unrepetentant Killer. I kind of make it close; I manage to stun his board and try a double KO on his four and five with Death of a Legionnaire and Finishing Move. I am foiled by a Lazarus Pit. : ( Afterwards I go get some food with the SoCal crew. Narcoleptic Ludin doesn't budge, but I have a pokeflute in my backpack to get him up again. ![]() I've never actually been to Chic-Fil-A. In fact, I make it a point not to fast food, but shit, SoCalers make it a point not to go to NorCal so... ![]() In between the chicken nuggets and the chicken strips - btw, there is a difference; chicken nuggets are more fried and taste better - we talk about VS. Everyone was excited about the prospect of future tournaments - especially being a bimonthly thing - but with some concern about the formats. I think this format could've been a lot worse, but a lot of it was mixed in with a desire to be goofy, especially since as Omar put it, this format is more or less GA+. I mean regardless, we'll play whatever... but isn't Modern Age and Silver Age still pretty vibrant? Especially since we haven't really tried MEV? Just my 2 cents. Anyways, I look forward to the next November 7th tournament... hopefully it'll be MA or SA. I am also looking forward to seeing more SoCalers and the dude who came down from Washington - definitely would've made more of an attempt to introduce myself if I knew/saw you. I'll definitely try to take better pictures next time. I also have some audio if you're curious. Otherwise, I think Ludin and I will make some sort of recap cast. Peace, -TDB PS: Miguel and his awesome deck: ![]() Thanks for the cards. I'm so glad the test results are negative : ) Edited by TheDerangedBear, Aug 25 2009, 03:24 AM.
