So it took me a while to recollect all my matches, and somethings may still be a little hazy, but here is how my day at the event went. Team SoCal arrived in Sacramento at around 7:30 in the morn, after leaving at about 1 in the morning. After locating the garishly pink locale (which did make it easy to find) we decided to have some breakfast (Ollalaberry waffles ftw!) After which we found a small park and practiced a little more before heading over to the event. Now, while I had been aware of the tourney for a while, in true Omar fashion I was still not 100% of what to play. After a ton of waffling I finally decided on my own build of an IG/Doom deck I had seem Ludin play before. Though my first time playing it, I felt I might still stand a good chance, seeing as Lex 3, Doom 4 lock is one of the most annoying things ever. Now, onto the matches. Rd 1 Andrew (Trinity GK/JLA) Andrew is a fellow socal player, and it was kind of a disappointment to have to play him first. In testing, it was probably a 50/50 match, with turn 4 inits deciding on how simple or difficult the game would be for me. Luckily for me, he missed on 1,2, and 3, while I curved with Boris, penguin (1), and Lex. He finally hit WW on 4, but didn't attack as I baited him with a Mobilize, which he negated with BGYT. Luckily for me, I already had Doom. After a safe team attack, Lex attacked with triple All Too Easy, giving me the win. Rd 2 Taver (Doom/League of Assasins) I was slightly concerned here. Taver was playing doom, which could easily lock me, as well as LoA, which could lead to combat problems. Luckily for me, his engine didn't seem to go off very well. He hit Boris on 1, missed 2, hit Doom on 3, missed 4, hit Kristoff on 5 and Sensei on 6. I curved with Penguin, IQ, Lex, Doom, Scarecrow, and on 6 I played Circe and Boris. Hitting my curve allowed me to lock him down, and even though I lost Lex at the end of 5, I already had enough burn going to have him concede. (2-0) Rd 3 Jason? (Shield/Ultimates) I sat down feeling pretty good, seeing as I was at the top table and the deck was working just right. Unfortunately for me, Jason was channeling the win more. Turns 1-3 went by fine for me, with a curve of Boris, IQ and Lex making me feel comfortable. He played Wasp on 1, missed 2 and had Nick Fury on 3. On 4, with no Doom, but a Doomstat in the row, I activated Boris to fetch a tutor. Too bad for me, Jason had a "you're under arrest" that stopped the search, and left me with no 4, while he played Giant Man. On 5, I got to play Doom, and I mystical'd his Nick Fury. He played a 5 (can't remember who) and put me to close to out of the game. On 6, I played scarecrow with a boost, but it was too late. He discarded his hand to get his 6, and when I saw he had a Thor in the rfg zone, I knew I stood no chance to get a win. 2-1 Rd 4 Paul (Exiles/X-men) Playing against Paul can sometimes be intimidating. He's a good player who is usually modest about his abilities, and often comes up with frustrating decks that you feel you can't do much against. His concoction for the tournament was awfully interesting, and after having reconned some of his matches, I knew it could also be fairly frustrating. Luckily for me, I knew my deck didn't need combat to win against his, as I could probably burn him out. Turns out, that really didn't matter, as he went a different route against me, getting his Vulcan to 9 counters by turn 4, only recruiting Proteus the entire game. Luckily for me, I hit my solid curve of Boris, IQ, Lex, and then Doom on 4, which led to a triple All Too Easy that again sealed a victory for me. Rd 5 Abel (X-men/Avengers) This was a match I had been looking forward too. I had seen Abel pull some interesting tricks with his deck in some of his earlier matches, and I know that for the most part avengers have some beefy characters. Luckily for me, I got a good draw, getting out penguin, IQ and Lex out before he was able to make his first recruit of Xorn on 3. He played the MAA wolverine on 4, while I brought out Doom, who Mystical'd his Xorn away. He attacked and recovered Wolverine, but that was pretty much the last he got to do. My Doom/Lex lock proved to be too much, and while he hit Spiderman on 5 and Cap on 6, he couldn't stop the burn from Circe and a boosted Scarecrow on 6, which gave me the win. (4-1) Rd 6 Adam (Gothan Knights/Team Superman) When it was announced that a 6th round would be necessary to see who would get to the top 8, I got a little nervous, as I didn't want to play Ludin, who was one of the very few 4-1 players left for me to go up against. When I found out it would be Adam, it came as a bit of relief, seeing as my tournament life wouldn't rest on a game against a teammate. What's more, I knew what he playing, and I knew that as long as I kept the lock, I could win via burn, seeing as I had Abracadabra available to keep Batman cape and cowl in check. I want rehash this game, as my numerous misplays are what kept me from going on. Playing secret files before his recruit on 3, and then forgetting to flip All Too easy down when Doom entered play were bad mistakes on my part, but what hurt me the most was forgetting to fetch my last all too easy before I got Abra stunned, which meant his Bats was able to negate it, which pretty much made me lose the game =( Though my 4-2 record wasn't enough to get me into the top 8, I still had a blast flipping cards and playing with all you great NorCal peeps. I want to thank the Baldman and everyone else in attendance for making a fun tourney, and hopefully, I'll get to see some of you come down and play here for socal vs day!
