Well me and Dave were able to get two games in and wouldn't you know it. He won the first game and I won the second. I then had to go so we are going to play Game 3. At this point I don't think it hurts to go ahead and release what we are playing. I am piloting my version of a Hulk Smash deck and Dave is rocking a (what I consider) a unique Trinity build. later, Kj |

So here's the tourney report. I decided to play my LOA/JLA "Registration Act" abuse deck for the tourney. Mostly made changes to put in cards "I felt like", running a dangerously low character build in the interum. I figured I had enough search. Mulligan condition: some way to hit my 2 and 3: "It's the Law" // Lands 1 [MCG] Worldeater, Heart of the Machine {MCG} 3 [DCL] Cadmus Labs {DCL} 1 [DCL] Metropolis Reborn, Non-Unique - Team-Up {DCL} 1 [DWF] City of Tomorrow - Team-Up {DWF} 2 [MCG] Worldeater, Proton Piston {MCG} 4 [DCL] Mountain Stronghold, Non-Unique {DCL} 1 [MCG] Worldeater, Elemental Regulator {MCG} 1 [MCG] Worldeater, Biosphere Boiler {MCG} 1 [MUN] Alias Investigations {MUN} 1 [DCL] Hall of Justice {DCL} 1 [DWF] Phantom Zone {DWF} 1 [DWF] Kandor - City in a Bottle {DWF} // Creatures 3 [DCL] Superman, Metropolis Marvel {DCL} 1 [DWF] Superman - Last Son of Krypton {DWF} 1 [DCL] Hassim, Loyal Retainer {DCL} 4 [DCL] Batman, Founding Member {DCL} 2 [DCL] Superman, Founding Member {DCL} 2 [DCL] Merlyn, Direct Hit Man {DCL} 1 [DCL] Ra's al Ghul, The Demon's Head {DCL} 5 [DCL] Shadow Assassin, Army {DCL} 1 [DCL] Wonder Woman, Ambassador of Peace {DCL} 1 [DCL] Aquaman, Lord of Atlantis {DCL} // Spells 4 [MUN] Superhuman Registration Act, Team-Up {MUN} 2 [DWF] At Their Finest {DWF} 4 [DCL] New Era {DCL} 2 [DCL] Indestructible {DCL} 3 [DCL] The Demon's Head {DCL} 3 [DCL] Mightiest Heroes {DCL} 3 [MCG] Pathetic Attempt {MCG} The idea here was to play everything I wanted to, ever :). OK, the idea is actually to run a "fake Ahmed" scam, getting the weapons I needed online. The Worldeaters actually aren't a joke; one thing I found in my testing is Worldeaters truly trump the control matchups, which I expected a decent number of (World's Finest and its ilk). Primarily I am set up to regulate out SHIELD aggro, Thunderbolts, etc... I didn't want people attacking me down, because my late game was pretty nutty. The deck really starts to go off with SRA. Mightiest heros is a free search with no discard or exhaustion with SRA. Alias Investigation turns into "draw a card". Batman can replace new locations into your row. You can regulate what Merlyn puts into your row. Cadamus Labs and Phantom Zone let you selectively put your top card into your row, which is a good effect. Overall, just a lot of ways to work with SRA in play. Didn't hurt that it stopped all the Loyalty issues of my guys. Why is Supes 4-drop in there? Eh, did it to play around with the Cadamus Labs setup. This was dumb for 2 reasons.. first, Cadamus Labs is quick to get replaced, so I really only have a chance to use it once a game. Second, even when I want him, I have absolutly, positively no way of searching him out. But oh well, life goes on. Match 1: VS Morphius (JLA mono-I guess that is a trinity deck?) We both miss 1 and 2, and both start Batman turn 3. Blows are traded, turn 4 I flip over the registration and toss down Merlyn, he plays Wonderwoman. I trigger Merlyn targetting bats, he redirects it, I choose to not sac a location. Merlyn the hand destruction guy. I also have Hall of Justice, so am able to trade Merlyn with Wonder Woman... Batmans swing on both sides, we move on. The details are a little sketchy, but I remember bouncing a major attack with Worldeater <> Heart of the Cards (or the machine, but I prefer the Yugioh reference). This lets me take over his init turn 6, and I crush him down. Game 2 he curve stomps me all over the place. Pumps are nice :). He is playing both 1s and 2s, drops some good 2/1 on 1 and Black Lightning on 2. Wonder Woman duals start turn 4, and though my Supes is bigger, he From The Shadows away my At their Finest to get over his Savage beatdown. I'm effectively dead on 5, truly dead on 6. Game 3 he gets a strong start, but he says he messed up several times. While I was willing to allow him to correct, he wanted the game played completly with no corrections. This differed vastly from KK and myself's finals game (later) where we were taking back minor infractions all over; but was exactly like the game I played against Villian (where I was encouraging him to take back small mistakes, and he insisted we were playing tournament and didn't want to). Haven't figured out 100% the etiquitte here, I usually try to be nice because when I was a "Pro" I was quite the rules lawyer, but it seems some people would rather have their mistakes cost them and are offended if you offer to let them take something back. What are thoughts here? Anyway, the game finishes with him exactly at 0; I had drawn my new eras to get the Worldeaters online, and though I lost 1 to some destructive card (not Batman but something else?), the 2 Worldeaters burned him out for the final 4 damage. Match 2 - Vs Bkwd (Secret Society) - Best of 1. We were short on time (coast differences) so decided to play a best of 1. What can I say, though I didn't get my eras/Worldeaters online, I had Wonderwoman turn 4 (backed by a PA I never needed) and Phantom Zone/Superman Turn 5. Wonder Woman prevented him from recurring his Straight-to-the-graved Black Manta, and Phantom Zone is SS's worst nightmare. He scooped when he realized he was missing 6.... the combination of those two cards are truly too much for SS to deal with (which is why he was talking about "Paper"). Match 3 - Finals vs KK (Hulk Solo). He took odds to start the match. Game 1 he hit perfect curve (2/1 +1/+1 permanent turn 2 Malik turn 3 Hirmon), which all were removed. I followed with Shadow Assassin/Batman, and his guys quickly became removed. Turn 4 he underdropped Malik (Hirmon was still out at this point), I dropped Wonder Woman and swung in hard (flipping a Worldeater). He dropped Hulk 5 (no boost, but 11/11), I dropped Supes (9/9, yay... there is some possibility I should have played an alternative 5, but too many cards are based around him). He tries to go through my team, I can at least save Supes with Invulnerability, but am hit hard. He drops 6-drop Hulk. I team in, he bloodsports twice, and gets both PAed. Even then the game pushes to 7, and his hulk slams some of my smaller team. I keep Aqualad protected by 7-drop Superman (Hulk has flight; but I have out Kandor, preventing the attack on him. Superman + Worldeaters take out Hulk, and I use Kandor to switch Aquaman and Superman so Aquaman can put on damage. For a total blank on 4 he came dangerously close to winning. Game 2 I had already formulated that I either hit my Worldeaters or die. He again curves out perfectly, and I am able to answer with my same 2-3-4. This time, however, he doesn't miss his 4, and it stuns into my Batman-Shadow Assassin team, taking both down. Wonder Woman tosses down a little damage. Turn 5 he KOs his Hulk to his 5, which I have PA for. He lays down some damage, and I cannot counter-attack. He flips the flight-location and gains some endurance (Himon had been active) Turn 6 he puts up the Hulk wall, and he takes down Batman for free with Bloodsport, I am able to push through a little damage eventually, but am nowhere close. I know he has trump 8. At this point, I also panic and get my Worldeater Regulator to gain endurance, a mistake... even at my low point I should have pressed on and gotten the Biosphere, I really needed to push damage. Turn 7 he hits me back, I hit him harder... but he is still at 20 going into the dreaded turn 8. He gets out the Hulk-8 lock, and I scoop up. Game 3 he actually misses his 1 and 2, where I get my 2 and 3. Turn 4 is textless (and worthless Superman); I am drawing what I need to keep my row full of Worldeaters, though I am having to miss key potential components to do so. He 5-drop Hulks batman turn 5, and I have no response; save to do a replacement effect because I am a bit character flooded (pull out a topdecked SRA into a used slot). With at their finest I am able to have a good attack turn (I took odds btw). Turn 6 saw Hulk 6-drop, I drop aqualad and after much musing decide that the game is all about regulators so pull back the New Era for a regulator (rather than a Cadamus Lab), I replace my teamup to get it; sucks because I end with a demon's head that would have been nice on top. I use mightiest hero (getting a Superman and discarding him; it was just for the shuffle effect) and see my turrn 7 worldeater on top. Perfect, I have a setup.. now all I need is the Cadamus or a way to get it... which doesn't happen. Turn 7 between replacing my 4 and 5 and dropping WW, I choose the latter. I feel confident. He's at 20, but I have a lot of damage pushing, and can regulate out 12 damage. Even if he survives I am at 26 (and will be still at turn's end, figure Aqua stuns and I gain 6). So next turn I can make an 18-point swing just with Worldeaters. I do the swing, he bloodsports and gets it PAed. He reveals two PAs of his own, but even with that he is at -4 and extends his virtual hand. Victory for registration. Remeber to register: It's The Law! |

Dave is an excellent player and a great guy. While I was never officially a "Pro" I did play competively in the past so I am big on trying to do proper moves the first time or take the screw up. Although like Dave said we did allow each other to take back the occassional small mistake here and there. All in all I am excited about Tournament #3 and look forward to seeing what Dave will pick as the format for Tournament #4. later, Kj P.S: Oh and Dave got his first treatment of Bloodsport being used on him while he wasn't team attacking. I think we are in agreement that is such a nasty interaction=P. Edited by KardKrazy, Dec 12 2009, 07:36 AM.

I love reading tourny reports! With regard to mistakes, I think they are part of the game. The best players find ways to avoid/overcome them. As long as both players agree on whether to correct mistakes (ie take them back), its all good. However, I think the following guidelines should be used: If just a random game, then correct mistakes. If the game is part of a tourny/event without prizes, then I say play on (but correcting is still OK). If the game is part of a tourny/event with prizes, then no one should even ask to take back a mistake. |

All right, I thought about this today, and here's my format choice: The format will be "Auction your own format". Pretty straightforward, all sets are going to be put up, except MEV (I consider MEV a poison pill by UDE, so when I choose formats, it autobans. This is not up for debate in this forum, I just don't want any decks in this format having to deal with Exiles/X-factor). Anyway, the concept is simple. Everyone who plays gets 200 points to distribute in a silent auction. You distribute the points, however you'd like, against all the available sets. Send your bids to me and I will take care of them, I don't want my format choices to be more work for Ike (he can run the tourney etc, but I will do the legwork of figuring out who gets what sets). Once all 8 bids come in, whoever has the highest bid for each set gets to play all of those cards, except banned cards. Now, here's the other caveat. YOU GET TO BID FOR BANNED CARDS. That card becomes unbanned for you, so Overload, Dr. Light, and friends all have potential to be in bids. Individual cards are bid just like everything else. MEQ, Extended Hellboy, MCG, and DCR are bid individually as well. So the MVL player doesn't necessarily get the Pathetic Attempt. Finally, the fan sets that have been made MWS (DSM-2, Factions, the new one if it has been made into a MWS set) are up as well. I believe fan sets are the future of this game, I want to support them in any bids I make. And the special "Dummy" rule: DSM-1 is available for anyone who doesn't win DSM-2. This is so anyone who bids stupidly and ends up with nothing isn't technically a "bye"... though good luck :). Any ties are counted as an unwin bid, so if two people both bid 200 for MOR, neither get it and both are stuck playing with DSM-1. In short, only one person can win a set. You can obviously win multiple sets with smart bidding. Send me your breakdown; remember cards like OverLoad, Research Base, Dr. Chimp, Dr. Light, Fiddler, GBNF, Go down fighting (?), Talia are all available for bid on an individual basis. Remember again that DSM-2 and Marvel Factions are legal bids in addition to all printed sets except MEV, and that all extended sets (including MEQ, MCG, and the DC Final Crisis are bids). No bidding on the boxed sets; they're not worth our time :). Don't bid on DSM-1. You can play it. Really. Good luck, bid smart. Edited by EvilDave, Dec 13 2009, 12:19 AM.

This format seems like it's intended to scare off anybody relatively new to the game. That's a lot of trouble to go through just to get to the deckbuilding stage. And for someone not familiar enough with the later sets to know what counters what, it's too much to ask a priori. But the clincher for me is really the fan sets. I totally don't dig playing with other people's homebrew. Interesting idea, but way too much for me to handle with my limited knowledge of the game. Edited by CapAp, Dec 13 2009, 03:46 AM.
